"What is a female lead? The saviour of male characters? A philanthropist? Someone who accepts the male lead's obsession and madness in the name of love?"

I am really into transmigrator stories. Haven't many of us readers imagined going into one of our beloved stories? Sometimes as ourselves, sometimes as natives of this other world, living adventures, meeting characters, fixing wrongs? As readers, we'd have valuable knowledge that could change the plot! Somehow along the way, east Asian writers started making fiction exploring exactly this premise 😍
Beware the Villainess! really stands out! It provides much needed satire to not only the transmigration subgenre, but to romance fantasy. Even when it is not openly criticising the many flaws of these types of stories, it provides certain parts of the plot fully tongue-in-cheek aware of exactly what it is doing.
It was my first experience with such a story in the subgenre, and therefore refreshing. Yet, although it starts a conversation and has an interesting FMC who forges her own (grey moral) heroic path, the story itself is not without its own shortcomings.
The author did a disservice to most side characters, and to Yuri, the og heroine and deuteragonist of BtV. She had an interesting plotline that could've been further explored and concluded. She's full of potential but at some point she just seems like a tool. She deserved better and happiness.
We knew Melissa was changing the story, but perhaps even more than she realized. Curious if we'll learn if any of the other characters are aware of the threads of fate like Yuri seems to be or if that's only because she was originally supposed to be the heroine. Melissa isn't the only character acting differently, though she is the center of all the changes. We even meet Nine's twin in this volume, though it makes everything even clearer as to why Nine didn't seem to be in any big hurry to try and return to his homeland, without factoring in his devotion to Melissa this time around. The character faces are rather hilarious, especially when they are disturbed or disgusted by something and break character so the artwork changes style entirely. It's a little jarring, but funny at the same time, as is the comparison to Melissa's reality and how others see her during the hunting party. She's made more than a few bold moves this time around, but this new challenge may be the hardest one yet.

3.5 The main story has been super quick and fun to read so that's why I gave it 4 stars. Objectively, the side character's arcs could have been more fleshed out and we should have had less plot points of the story and saw more nuanced character development. But for what this was, comedic, fast paced and full of Melissa being the most iconic villainess ever, it was great... but where was my diet coke? Where was my Melissa falling preposterously for Nine, passionate and eager for him like he was her? Where was my 'I want to envelop your lips, to lick them and taste them. I want to leave marks on your body. And hold you roughly but at the same time be kinder than anyone else to you'???? Where the hell was that, why did that not come into fruition. I was baited, robbed, deprived. I guess there might be more development in the side story chapters but damn.

FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY!!!! We get a wonderful show of women fighting against creeps, AND WINNING!!!!! Melissa showing, not just telling, Jake about his actions and feelings is a masterpiece, I felt so proud watching her lesson land and resonate with him. AND THERE'S CONSEQUENCES!!!!! So many stories excuse creepy male behavior towards their FL's, and it sickens me every time. BUT NOT TODAY, B$TCH!!!

the special episodes were twice or even thrice as long as the actual episodes- this plot and character development should’ve been done during the manhwa itself- but sure it was progressing according to the OG Story. the special episodes should’ve then been another season or something? really stupid. annoyed me. melissa gets a free pass for being inconsiderate just because she’s a girlboss 😹😹😹
Amazing!! With Melissa’s help Ian started having a change of heart and is starting to become a better crown prince. Jake finally got what he deserved and Yuri told him to get away from her. It seems that Yuri knows exactly how the story will unfold and is happy to see that Melissa is changing the story. How will they defeat Mizen? He seems to be a very strong opponent.
At the risk of repeating myself, each volume improves upon the story! This volume also delivers on my hopes for more plot. Finally you get some insight into the bigger picture with some new insights from Melissa's secrets starting to peek out. Also you get to finally know nine's traffic backstory.
