Breastfeeding difficulty due to insufficient glandular tissue is something many mothers struggle with. Because this condition is still largely under-researched and misunderstood by practitioners who work with mothers during the perinatal period, women who experience breastfeeding problems due to insufficient glandular development also struggle to find support, both clinical and emotional, in dealing with them. This book aims to inform and support the efforts of breastfeeding mothers with low milk production due to insufficient glandular tissue, from both a scientific standpoint and an emotional one, covering the unique decisions and feelings that may be faced by someone who fully intended to breastfeed but felt betrayed by her body. The book also provides guidance for practitioners who seek to understand this condition and support their patients/clients who are dealing with it.
For moms with hypoplasia (insufficient glandular tissue, or IGT), or their breastfeeding supporters, this book is an incredible help, sharing the science and emotional and practical support that moms need to meet their breastfeeding goals, even if they physically can't make enough milk. It also talks about breastfeeding management issues that could affect milk production.
YES! Finally a book and information about a side of breastfeeding that is generally unheard of and unstudied. I really wish that all healthcare providers who work with pregnant women, or focus on women's issues in general, would read this book. With so little research and information about breastfeeding out there, this book was so informative and had so many great resources in it. If doctors and midwives were educated about this particular problem, they could save so many the heartache and questions and self-doubt because providers would know what to look for, how to help women and then both doctor and patient would be informed and would then be able to make educated decisions about how to approach breastfeeding together. I cried and learned and absorbed all I could while reading this and finished this book knowing more than I ever have from any lactation consultant, doctor, or other resource.
This is a must read for all pregnancy and postpartum healthcare professionals, as well as those suffering with IGT. I'm someone with IGT and it's extremely frustrating the complete lack of help and information regarding IGT within breastfeeding classes, from lactation consultants to midwives to pediatricians, etc. If I were better informed regarding my condition, it would have saved a lot of emotional, physical, and financial toiling and could have helped me have a better early relationship with my child.
This is an excellent book! The fact that it is designed for those who are having troubles breastfeeding with a chapter for breastfeeding helpers rather than vice versa is wonderful. Women are searching out for information that unfortunately, many providers simply don't have or are unwilling to divulge. I have found that my clients with IGT are a subset that has been very difficult for me emotionally as well as practically and this book addresses those difficulties with aplomb. I will certainly be recommending this book to others. I will also referring to it often.
