This book was offered free by the author in exchange for an honest review. It is basically a learner’s text, with well-guided lessons on both the basics and strategies (e.g., the pin; the fork; sacrificing a piece to gain positional advantage), with exercises and chess problems liberally sprinkled along the way. One such exercise is in chess notation, which I particularly liked because it can be quite confusing, and not only for the novice.
Additionally, Mr. Knight takes pains to emphasize chess etiquette and sportsmanship, such as shaking hands both before and after a game, and the “touch-move” rule, especially in tournament play. And although he refers earlier in the book to various openings without having first defined and described them, he redeems himself by a much more comprehensive description and analysis later. He also addresses more “heady” issues such as visualization and intuition after one has obtained a mastery of the basics.
I enjoyed this book and would recommend it, to novices, intermediate players and chess coaches alike. Additionally, I would see it as a companion book to Jose Capablanca’s excellent “Chess Fundamentals.” Five stars.

Discovering the Magic of Chess

I never thought I'd dive into chess, feeling it was a game for the intellectually elite. However, this guide changed my perspective entirely, showcasing the myriad benefits chess offers beyond just the game itself. The lessons are engaging, broken down into manageable segments that fit into my busy schedule, making it easy to learn at my own pace. I've gained confidence not only in my understanding of chess but also in my decision-making skills in everyday life. It's a fantastic resource for anyone looking to challenge themselves and have fun along the way!

Overall good and helpful book!
Some great advice and insight. It does dive a bit deep on the different openings (I couldn’t tell one from the next) with minimal explanation on the differences (seemed a bit advanced for this part of the book or maybe this book in general).
I liked the last sections of the book focused on getting experience and joining the community.
I will definitely read again
