My Vigilante Valentine: A Super Romantic Comedy

Rate this book
When my oh-so-handsome coffee shop regular turns out to be The Blade—the city’s most infamous vigilante—I do the most logical thing appoint myself as his partner in crime-fighting.

Sure, Jax isn’t exactly thrilled. He’s the type who insists he doesn’t need a team, prefers to brood alone, and thinks opening up is a tactical error.

But guess who came up with the genius plan to pose as a couple to lure out a Valentine’s Day villain? Me.

And okay, maybe the dating ruse was a means to an end, but the more time I spend with Jax, the harder it is not to fall for this adorably stoic antihero.

I mean, come on. His love language is grumpy acts of service (like saving a life and then glaring about it), and he’d do anything to protect the people of this city—and me.

But even though he makes my heart race with just a look, he seems to be more interested in cleaning up the streets than kissing me for real.

It’s fine. I can do this.

I can work with The Blade without getting drawn in by Jax’s devastating good looks.

I can be the faithful sidekick and pretend I’m not wishing for so much more.

Right?

After all, I’m supposed to be helping him catch criminals, not feelings.

My Vigilante Valentine is a closed-door, grumpy/sunshine romcom. Perfect for fans of morally gray heroes with all the sizzle, and no spice.

I had no idea I needed this book in my life. Luna stole the show with her wit and humor, and Jax was an adorable, resisting grump who secretly adored her. As a long-time fan of the show Arrow, I give My Vigilante Valentine a full stamp of approval. I need more of Jax and Luna in my life!

this was so cute and fun! H is the vigilante saving the city, think of the daredevil from MCU and h is the one that becomes his sidekick after finding out that her fav customer of her coffee shop is also her secret superhero crush. if you want a lighter read with good banter and fun characters, pick this one up.

This was such a fun read. Yes, we are dealing with a superhero. Yes, he has some special abilities that make him move super fast. Just like we like to watch in those Marvel movies. Yes, it's all made up and unreal, but sometimes it feels good to go to a land where there is a superhero, and he falls for the cafe owner, protects her and spends his day brooding handsomely.
I loved it.

This was a clean, adventure, romance loaded with great chemistry, scorching kisses and the best banter ever.

In the words of Luna, "I'm obsessed." My Vigilante Valentine definitely isn't the typical book I've come to know from Jess Mastorakos, who is in probably my top 5 of must read authors. However, all the teasers she was posting on social media really had me intrigued about this new book. And let me say, less than 20 pages in and I was already so hooked! I was absolutely dying laughing and couldn't get enough.

This is both one of the most ridiculous books I've ever read while also being one of the best. Now hear me out! I don't mean ridiculous as in badly written. Quite the opposite. Just ridiculous in that the vigilante, superhuman storyline is obviously not realistic and so many of the lines are comical. But it's written in a way that's just so good. The banter between Jax and Luna, and Luna and Chris were so entertaining. And don't get me started on the chemistry between Jax and Luna. She is perhaps one of the sunshiniest characters I've ever read and he one of the broodiest (even if he would say he isn't broody) but they just work so well. Seriously, pick this book up and read it! You won't regret it!

This was the perfect Valentine read. It had humor, suspense, and a swoony fake dating romance I was here for. I hope we get to see some of these characters again. I'm not ready to leave this town.

Plot- Cute plot involving a romance between a scientifically enhanced (think Marvel/DC) superhero and a coffee shop owner. They solve a mystery together.

Characters- Broody/sunshine combo.

I really liked the MMC, Jax. He was a strong & silent type. Kick-butt fighter. Confident. And he thought the FMC was adorable, which was endearing

The FMC, Luna, was okay at best. I usually love sunshiny FMCs, but she was simply too silly for me. Constantly jabbering about inane things, and not taking situations seriously.
Think: Luna busy snarking with her cousin in the MIDDLE OF A BANK ROBBERY. Or flirting with Jax while he subdues her coffee shop robber. She didn’t even pause to feel shock at the sudden incident before she launches into chatting him up. So unrealistic. And she behaved like this all the time.

I liked how Jax thought she was adorable, but her silliness was way too much for me.

Writing Very light hearted writing. Slightly juvenile but not horribly so.

Romance- Good chemistry! They had some great kisses.

Content-

Language- no swearing
Spice- clean. Just kissing.
Substance abuse- none
Cover- Yikes! Seriously awful. Does not attract me at all. Very amateurish artwork here.
POV- first person alternating dual POV
Cliffhanger- no
Format- KU

So. stinkin’. cute. 🥰

I adore Jess’s books. There’s only 2 I haven’t read yet, but every time the funny and the heartfelt meet perfectly!

Not gonna lie, I laughed so much—over my salad at breakfast and at 2am when I couldn’t sleep, haha. The banter was top-notch.

If you love the story where superhero meets crime drama meets rom-com, with grumpy x sunshine dynamics, and over the top hilarity—this one’s for you!

Totally random aside, but I love that so many of Jess’s leading ladies are baristas/coffee shop owners. It just works for me. 😂

The cackle of disbelief I uttered when the hero said that he lived on (and funded all his vigilante efforts and gear with) money from the VA. I'd already quirked an eyebrow over the fact that he got medboarded out of the military even though he's perfectly healthy, perfectly functional, and did not sustain debilitating or disabling damage from the explosion he was caught in while on tour. I also quirked an eyebrow over him saying he worked out twice every day, on top of his whole vigilante career and all the time he spends moonlighting (daylighting?) as a web-surfer in a coffee shop. And then the heroine's reckless sneaking around and the whole villain confrontation scene? I could not suspend my disbelief.

The romance itself wasn't technically instalove, but they went from zero to sixty so fast and with so little foundation that it amounts to instalove and felt as barely credible as his backstory. The motivations and explanations for everything that happened were flimsy at best, which was disappointing because the premise of this story is good — there's a lot of missed potential here.

I should caveat that I'm not in the military and have little personal experience with it, but I do watch The Fat Electrician and other veteran-produced content, so I've got a pretty decent secondhand familiarity. (It's a common joke punchline that the VA — Veterans Affairs — will try to label injuries as "not service-related" so that they won't have to pay for ongoing treatment for said injuries.) However, my brother (a military sci-fi author) has been immersed in that world for years, and I turned to him to fact-check my skepticism when I was in the midst of the book. If you enjoy crashouts, in the spoilers below is our (spoiler-filled) conversation.

Calling all lovers of grumpy/sunshine and Arrow! Is that you?! Well... do I have just the book to add to your TBR! And I would add it to the top because this book is perfect for people like us! *dreamy sigh*

Y'all. Luna needs to be my best friend! She had me literally laughing out loud from the very beginning ("I'm obsessed.") and had me wondering what in the world she was going to come up with next. I loved her way of thinking and how she wasn't afraid to live her life. She danced to the beat of her own drum and you just can't help but to love her!

Just ask Jax. He tried. He really, really tried. But y'all. This is Luna we're talking about here! She doesn't take no for an answer and dragged him into all her craziness. He may have balked at it but I think that, deep down inside, he loved every single minute of it. He, too, couldn't wait to see what in the world she would do next.

Luna and Jax were absolutely perfect for each other. They are complete opposites but totally work together. It's clear from the very beginning that there will never be a dull moment in their relationship. She'll definitely keep that man on his toes. But honestly? I think that's one of the things he loves the most about her. Gah! I just can't with how much I adore these two!

Now lets take a moment to discuss the off the charts chemistry and swoony kisses. YOWZERS! It was hot, hot, hot! I may or may not have turned into a big ol' pile of ooey gooey goodness. This girl had all the heart eyes and dreamy sighs for all things Luna and Jax. I seriously did not want this book to end!

I have to say that I was SOOOOO happy to hear that Ms. Mastorakos plans on writing more of the adventures of Luna and Jax! I may or may not have squealed and did a little happy dance around my room when this was announced. I have no clue what she has planned but I'm hoping Chris will get his own book. He definitely needs a HEA of his own. But whether he does or doesn't, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this series! I already know it's going to be amazing!

As for my casting... I really wanted to use Emily Bett Rickards and Stephen Amell (IYKYK), but alas. They just didn't fit for Luna and Jax. Now these two on the other hand? Perfection in my opinion! What do you think?

Another for the favorites list!

I loved every, single, word of this book. The banter was incredible, the world building was perfect and the origin story of The Blade was exceptional!

But the best part of this story was Luna and Jax. "The vigilante and the coffee shop owner."

I absolutely loved Luna. Her quirkiness, her confidence, everything about her was relatable, highly entertaining and extremely likeable. She had me laughing out loud (literally) even in the most suspenseful moments of this story.

And then there's Jax, our wonderful viligante superhero. (but not a superhero!) I loved his protectiveness, his determination and his quiet but cocky confidence. He was the perfect grumpy hero for this story and his POV chapters and inner sarcasm just made him even better!

All in all, even though this was quite different than Jess's usual books, it still carried her wonderful storytelling, awesome characters and the bantering humor that is always present in her books. I'd highly recommend this quirky, perfect story for your TBR list!

Loved it!!

I just finished reading My Vigilante Valentine, and oh, my, wow. That book was just, hands down, fun! Like, I couldn't stop grinning. And for good reason! Luna is so sweet and such a random crackerjack, and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of her interactions with Jax--with or without his "costume". Jax is definitely the broody, grumpy cinnamon roll, and it works SO WELL! I loved getting his POV, and watching his walls lower as he let Luna in.
All in all:
The banter? The smoldering looks? The swoonworthy kisses? Check, check, and check! And guess what? As per typical Jess Masterakos fashion, there were no swear words and no bedroom scenes, and the story was absolutely fantastic! This is definitely worthy of a re-read, and I can't wait to share it with my teenage daughter! Loved it!!

WOW!!! A laugh-out-loud rom-com with suspense, swoon, sizzle and super powers.

This clean (kisses only) contemporary rom-com is a laugh-out-loud page turner with strong, likeable characters (at least the good guys are likeable - haha). I highly recommend My Vigilante Valentine if you want a fun, entertaining read.

My favorite line: "Help me. I've swooned and I can't get up."

I was given an ARC of this story from BookFunnel at the request of Jess Mastorakos, the author. All thoughts and comments are mine, given voluntarily.

This is my voluntary review of a copy I was given.

This quick-moving romcom grudgingly brings together a small team to take down a really bad bad guy.
There are some action scenes, but it's mostly about Jax and Luna... It's about love and trust, too, although they're not mentioned until the end of the story. You see them in the way the main characters interact. The characters are awesome!

I loved every part of this story!

Romantic suspense at its funest!

Romance, sweet, contemporary, suspense;
Luna and Jax are acquainted because he’s a regular at her shop. A chance encounter has her wondering about his secret alter ego.
They had a great attraction, her cousin and her employee Wednesday were fun additions and string pieces of this story.
Perfect pacing, loved how they all complimented each others strengths to solve this murder mystery and catch the criminal behind it all.
Perfect romantic suspense with some fun light moments in the mix.

Oh my goodness!! This book was so good. This was the first book that I’ve read by this author and I’m definitely looking forward to reading more. I love books that have witty banter like this one does, have a slow build romance like this one does with a bit of mystery and suspense, which this one does. It checked off all of my favorite things. This book kind of reminded me of the TV show Arrow, but a much cleaner, nicer version. Definitely read this book, you will not be disappointed.

A fun, unique military/superhero romcom.

If you've read any Jess Mastorakos books, you'll know her military romances are engaging, so this story is no different... just a little... different. 😉

Luna and Jax's romance was fun to read. With some DC/Marvel vibes, thanks to the origin story superpowers-giving "accident", it added some "extra" to the crime-fighting romcom.

A great read. 😊

NB I received an ARC of this novel.

I love a good grump/sunshine trope and this was such a great read! The characters were so well developed that I was pulled right in to enjoy a well written storyline. This book had a few elements that took creative liberty but if you come for the romance and sassy dialogue you won’t be disappointed!

Her own personal superhero

Oh my!!!!! So. Much. Fun. It had me giggling out loud. Luna is hilarious with her never ending chatter and Jax/Blade with his over-the top grumpiness-er…. Brooding. Of course they had to go after the bad guy and Mr I Work Alone decided it was helpful to have a team supporting him. Her nickname is Menace for good reason and she has more skills than noticeable at first look, but for Jax she was just his sunshine in dark places. Loved the superhero references. Clean.

A fun read I couldn't put down

Its been a minute since I read a book in a day, I couldn't put this one down. It was funny, and had a fair amount of action. Plus Luna is relatable with her quirky ADHD tendencies.

I really hope there's another book coming with these characters and their town that needs a vigilante. I'm here for team blade!

This was a fun, rom-comy book. I adore anything that Mastorakos’ writes so I knew that this was going to be a great book. However I was still a little apprehensive because I wasn’t sure if the vibes would fit me, but it ended up enjoyable. My Vilignate Valentine is written by Jess Mastorakos.
Luna was a joy to read about! I loved her mindset and her liveliness. She was so fun and it was cool to read about a character with ADHD. She felt real and I adored her character. Jax was such a grumpy character but I also really liked him. He was the perfect match for Luna. He was apprehensive about letting someone in, but Luna broke down his walls.
Luna and Jax were just perfect together! I liked how they didn’t try to change each other but encouraged each other to be themselves. They were so much fun together, I adored their interactions. The romance was sweet! I loved Chris and Luna’s relationship, they were such siblings! It was the best, their banter was perfect.
The story was so engaging and I didn’t want to put the book down. I wanted to see how Jax and Luna would catch the valentine villain. This had the perfect mix of rom-com vibes and super hero vibes. The references to different superheroes was so much fun.
I really liked My Vilignate Valentine! I would totally recommend it. I hope that there are going to be more books like this! My Vilignate Valentine is a clean romantic comedy and cozy mystery romance.

Book Highlights:
Rom-com
ADHD representation
grumpy/sunshine
Siblings (but really cousins)
Superheroes
Mystery
Coffee shop vibes
Coffee shop owner
They become a team
Superhero references

an absolutely fabulous must-read

I love all of Jess Mastorakos’ books. I love the romances, the romcoms, and the romantic suspense ones. I especially like that she uses military and former military main characters. This book is a bit different than those - but just as good.

My Vigilante Valentine is Batman meets Captain America meets romcom. The MMC is a former Marine (yes, I know that once a Marine, always a Marine!) who was exposed to a substance that gives him some superpowers during his last mission. He goes around fighting crime with his knives and superspeed while leaving the criminals tied up for the police. The FMC owns the coffee shop where he sits to use their Wi-Fi to track down criminals. She discovers his secret identity convinces him to allow her to help him in his crime fighting. The banter between these two characters is incredible. There are so many instances in this book where you will laugh out loud as they solve crime and fall in love.

This book is an absolutely delightful read from start to finish.

fun book

This is a light, non-serious story that rivals comic book vigilantes.
It’s sweet and fast.
Clean read.
Believablity would be a 3 out of 10. Not only b/c of the superpower thing but mostly b/c of how frequently they talk shop publicly. Way too often.
And some things that were both obvious and completely pertinent were completely ignored.
BUT that might have been the point. This is a fun sweet story poking fun at the superhero franchises. It hits all the major points of the superhero genre.
Clark Kent/Superman level superhero disguise.
Broody hero.
Determined heroine with little to no self preservation.
Computer savvy genius third wheel.
Genius level super villain.
Villain monologue with backstory.
Creepy warehouse showdown-complete with tied up heroine in imminent danger.

Yup, the characters in the book even poke fun at the cannon of it all.

This is a light, funny romance.
Would definitely recommend.

Luna is quite an accomplished young lady who started her own coffee shop. She has a smile for everyone and can diffuse a difficult situation with her wit and charm. She is fascinated with the brooding regular who always sits in the corner of her coffee shop. When she and her cousin, Chris, are caught in a bank robbery, the local super hero vigilante comes to their rescue. There is something familiar about this superhero, Blade.

This story is a similar story to Captain America; a Marine who was was injured in an explosion and came away with some super human skills. When a serial killer threatens has Jax and Luna in his crosshairs, can they work as a team to bring the killer to justice or is it too late for them?

There is so much more to this story with some sweet, romantic moments, suspense, and finally a happy ending.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading this one by Jess Mastorakos. But it sucked me into the story from the very first page. I did not want to stop reading.

I loved Luna. She's a local coffee shop owner. I loved the way she had a huge crush on not one, but two guys. There's The Blade, the savior of the city she lives in. He's always stopping crimes. And Jax. The strong silent type who hangs out at her coffee shop all the time. I loved that she figures out that Jax is The Blade. And how she makes him include her, and her cousin Chris, in his crime fighting adventures.

I loved Jax, too. He's definitely got secrets. But he's a really good guy. And he works hard to keep everyone, especially Luna safe. I loved the way he tries to protect her, even when he understands the danger that he is in himself.

This book needs a sequel ASAP! I loved it so much!

Fun new stand-alone book by Jess Mastorakos.
This is a new type of book by Jess but is definitely a lot of fun.
Slate Harbor has an unknown person who may be criminal or may be a person out to help police with the rash of misdeeds. The Blade is a mystery to everyone but he rescues Luna and others at the bank and she becomes obsessed with finding out who he is.
Jax is The Blade but nobody is supposed to know it. He spends a lot of time at Luna’s coffee shop doing research. There is a definite attraction there but neither wants to be the first to approach the other.
His last mission as a Marine changed his life forever.
Fake dating to catch a serial killer just seems to be the best answer to Luna.
