A chilling take on second chances, where a brutal break-in comes back to haunt the sole survivor with a new threat—and another victim.
Eleven years ago, Cami Cortlandt’s mother and sister died cruelly in a violent home invasion. The trauma and notoriety still linger, but Cami has managed to build a life in her hometown despite everything she’s lost.
Then one day it all comes rushing back.
A distorted voice on the phone: Would you like a do-over? A disturbing video of a room with bars on the window, trapping a young boy inside who looks achingly, impossibly familiar. Four days to find him.
With the help of Rex Lowe, an old classmate whose past is inextricably tied to her own, Cami races to uncover everything she can about the boy—where he is, who he is, and why she’s the only one who can save him.
But as Cami and Rex unravel one clue after another, the past and present converge in an explosion of secrets they never saw coming…and a truth they never could have imagined.
This book really exceeded my expectations! It brought forward so many emotions, stories that were both tragic and inspiring.
Eleven years ago Cami and her family went through a horrific event, one that killed her mother and sister and left her living with the horrors of it. Now she owns a butterfly farm and she's finally found a sense of peace when a phone call brings it all right back. A boy is being held captive, a boy she might know all too well. With a help from Rex, an old classmate, who's future was also affected eleven years ago, they are racing against the clock to solve the clues and find the boy. But the past is still there to haunt them, in ways they never expected.
I absolutely loved Cami, she was so brave and incredibly strong. I admired her so much and Rex was such a sweetheart. The way he was there for Cami, no questions asked, was truly amazing. I loved how their relationship progressed, but I do wish we got more of it. The secondary characters were compelling too, some of the stories heartbreaking in their own way. I actually really liked how their stories ended and the justice/revenge they manage to enact. Not every evil is the same. And of course Cyrus, I loved him so much.
I also liked how the story resolved itself, every loose end tied up in a great way. I expected most of it, but I was blindsided by one particular storyline. The suspense and the pace worked perfectly for me. It really was a compelling story!
*Thank you to Netgalley and to Montlake for providing me with an ARC.*
Once again this author writes an extremely dark story with no trigger warnings with on page r*pe. And rape of minors. Also graphic scenes of murder. You would not expect this based on reading the synopsis either. This was basically trauma porn with everything that unraveled.
BUT that is not even why I hated it. It’s once again the writing style for me. I felt like I was reading the writing of a very unestablished author that is just finding their footing and learning how to write a well crafted story. I am deeply disappointed because the synopsis sounded so good. This author is very hit or miss for me personally, but I couldn’t help myself because of the synopsis, but I probably should have not let myself be fooled.
I think this author has trouble conveying emotion within their writing and that is why they chose to put very shocking moments hoping that will help with the lack of depth to the writing. There is also a lack of character development in my opinion. You have to develop characters and make us actually attached before going dark if you want me to feel emotion and not just be like “wow that’s really disgusting”. Then it also got so dull afterwards with plot twists that made me roll my eyes.
Also, I want to note that AGAIN I do not agree with the marketing of this book which was marketed as “ROMANTIC thriller”. Please take romantic out of it. Even Frieda who writes thrillers that are actually not too dark does not say they are romance even if there is some romance involved. This is very misleading to readers when it becomes such a dark book so fast with no warning.
I promise I am not normally this mean with reviews, but this was the last straw for me with this author and their marketing team too.

Woooeee! A brilliant mashup of romantic suspense and psychological thriller, The Fix was as raw and poignant as it was heart-pounding and tense. Supposedly meant for a NA audience, it worked just as well for this adult reader. After all, the graphic scenes on offer were hard to stomach at times as were the serious themes. That being said, there was a definite softer side to this tale of second chance romance. Alongside of a found family vibe, I was smiling away by the time I reached the last page. With events that suggest it just might be book one in a series, I throw myself at Ms. Sheridan’s feet and beg for a sequel. Thanks to well-developed characters, a fast pace, and compelling plot lines that connected with ease, I couldn’t put the book down and flew through cover to cover it in under twenty-four hours.
All said and done, with well-written multiple POVs and two gripping timelines, the short, addictive chapters kept my fingers flying at speed. Not only that, but I easily fell head over heels for the small cast of characters. Delivering everything I wanted in a story of heartbreak, trauma, love, and resilience. You see, not only was there plenty of romance without interrupting the ratcheting suspense and foreboding, but it made me—a veritable non-romance reader—absolutely swoon. Melding well with the in-your-face kidnapping plot and scheming killers, it had a bit of everything for anyone who loves to be thrilled on both fronts. So if this describes you even the tiniest bit, be sure to get a copy of this stunning new novel today. I loved every minute of it and I’m sure you will as well. Rating of 5 stars.

☀︎ 𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙵𝙸𝚇 ☀︎ Is a full length dark suspenseful thriller novel by author Mia Sheridan. Spoken in dual POV's. Rex & Cami
Once I saw the teasers popping up on Facebook, I couldn't wait to get my grabby little hands on it. Plus it doesn't hurt that I love this authors books.
So here’s the thing with this book, first off I’m unsure as to why this author doesn’t have a trigger warning page, or a link to entail the triggers associated within this book, because it certainly needs one for sensitive readers. I’m not sure why this would not be included or if it was overlooked?
The leading up to and during the event which changed Cami’s life forever seemed disjointed, or rushed, even though I felt somewhat empathetic towards her, and everything she had endured, I wish I’d connected with her before the home invasion. Maybe if I’d felt a connection with her I would’ve had more of an emotional pull towards her character.
Eleven years after the home invasion is when I felt that connection which I was seeking and I started to enjoy the story more. Even more so when Rex made a reappearance.
Many twists and turns which is what kept me invested in this book. I never knew which way this author was going to go. Which was that element of surprise I was seeking.

Sadly, Cami and her family were invaded in their home. This scene is so brutal with unimaginable fear. The rape scene is a tough scene and the reader is caught up in the presence of danger. I could not put this audio down. The narrators, Carly Robins and Keith Brown did an excellent job with the male and female characters told in the past and presence. The suspense will hold you until the end and even create some afterthoughts for days to come. When Cami tries to move past the tragedy, she begins to get videos of a child trapped in a locked room and some triggering messages prompting her to bring back her past that her mother said while she was dying. She connects with one of her friends, Rex from high school to investigate who the child is and why they are sending her the videos. The emotional attraction between the two of them will keep you centered on their connection as they fight together to find this boy before it is too late. Well worth the read and the edge of the seat hunt.
“The Fix” by Mia Sheridan is a suspenseful romance novel that is about a survivor of a home invasion. The survivor named Cami and a once friend of hers try to help a boy that is trapped, after Cami receives a disturbing call and video of this boy. As the story starts to unravel, past secrets start to emerge.
This book comes with a beautiful cover and was very dark, tense, adventurous, mysterious and even included romance. While some of the parts were difficult to read, I found this to be overall a great story. I found it to be captivating and well paced. It was clear, conversational and included a clear thesis. It is about trauma and healing, complex relationships, justice and the characters confronting their past violent situations. This was a deep read and came with strong characters that change and grew in the story. This book starts off with past trauma events, then goes into the present. Overall, I rate this a 4 out of 5 stars.
Content warnings include abuse, grief, murder, sexual assault, substance abuse, rape and violence. I think anyone that is a fan of books that are about overcoming past traumas would enjoy this book!
Thank you to NetGalley, author Mia Sheridan and Montlake for this digital advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
This book is expected to be published on October 28, 2025!
I had to DNF @ 20% because there was absolutely no labeled trigger warning for early description of SA with children. How are we still doing this?? I could not continue to read or digest it.
This isn’t just a thriller, it’s a love story as well. And there were moments where that part really got to me. But in the beginning it felt a bit too much, someone so dedicated to someone else just felt a bit stalkerish. But as the story progressed, it didn’t seem disturbing anymore. I also liked the plot, there was plenty happening and I liked that.
Thoughts I haven't picked up a book by Mia Sheridan in forever, with The Fix being my second reading experience with this author, let me start off by saying I was unsure about going into this book because there's no way she could have the same effect on me as she did with Archer's Voice but to my surprise this did hit, maybe not as much but it definitely did. The beginning pulled me in from the get-go, then it was a cycle intriguing but slower pacing. With all that being said Mia definitely knows how to tug at your heartstrings, this definitely was one of those in the best way. If you enjoy second suspenseful romance then this book is for you!

Plot Summary Eleven years after a violent home invasion left Cami Cortlandt the sole survivor, she’s rebuilt her life—until a call from a distorted voice offers her a “do-over.” Soon after, she receives a video of a boy trapped behind bars who looks eerily familiar. With only four days to find him, Cami joins forces with Rex Lowe, a former classmate connected to her past. As they follow the trail, long-buried secrets surface, revealing a terrifying link between the new crime and the tragedy that destroyed her family
Eleven years ago, Cami went through a horrific tragedy. Her trauma is still fresh, but she’s managed to build a new life in her hometown. However, after a disturbing phone call, she realizes that the ghosts of her past are still haunting her. And she has no choice but to turn to her former classmate—the one whose life she once destroyed.
I’ve read and loved many of Mia Sheridan’s romantic books before, and I’ve noticed that lately she’s been writing more thrillers, so I was really curious to read her newer work.
This is a thriller with a romantic subplot, and I honestly didn’t expect it to be this dark or to contain so many triggers. The ARC version didn’t include a trigger list, which wasn’t a problem for me since I usually skip those anyway because I like to go in blind. But for anyone who needs to know, this book includes child sexual assault, violence, and murder.
I usually don’t like big time jumps in books, but here I actually loved it—it showed right away how much the characters had changed in eleven years. I liked Rex from the start, so I was really happy to see how confident and strong he’d become.
I really loved the characters and was emotionally invested in them the whole time. The story is full of events; one plot twist near the end felt a bit unrealistic to me, considering everything that happened before.
Overall, it was a dark, intense, and gripping read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
The Fix is disturbing, graphic, brutal, and so darkly twisted!
A clever plot with a tight pace, where I could never predict what was coming. The tension kept me on edge throughout, and this unsettling feeling was like an addictive drug.
My niggle: I wished for a bit more character development on Rex’s part.
There are a ton of fucked up situations and actions in this plot. Readers who need trigger warnings MUST read the negative reviews, which describe those aspects in depth. I have noticed that most of the criticism comes from the book’s lack of trigger warnings.
I, for one, appreciated that the story didn’t come with any warnings. It’s dark fiction the way I like it, unfiltered and unapologetic.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
What a face paced, traumatic, romantic thriller this was! I was on the edge of my seat and many times it had me sitting straight up with my jaw on the floor.
After surviving a traumatic home invasion that took the lives of Cami’s mom a sister, she is trying to live her life to the best of her ability. But all that all goes up in flames when she receives a disturbing phone call. A child is trapped and Cami has four days to save him. With the help of an old classmate, Rex, she will race to find answers and uncover a whole lot more than expected.
Definitely check your trigger warnings as this story is dark
This is a very firm DNF for me. I do not recommend it. I made it to 12% before I physically recoiled in horror. No trigger warnings, no set up. It was disgusting and I cannot, in good faith, recommend this.
What a truly compelling and gripping read! Beginning with a brutal home invasion and morphing into a race against time to save a young boy, I was hooked right from the shocking opening chapters! Told in multiple POVs, each of the characters were full of depth and wormed their way into my heart; Cyrus in particular. The pacing is steady along with bursts of intensity and some moments that had me squirming in my seat with anxiety and tension. There are some tough scenes and subject matter, including violence and r*ape, which were hard to read despite them not being overly detailed. Please check trigger warnings.
This is largely a romantic thriller with elements of mystery and suspense in the vein of Iris Johansen or Joy Fielding. The will-they-won’t-they facet of the second chance romance was included a little too much for my non-romance self. However, even I could appreciate the touching and heartwarming aspect of it. What I loved most though, was the found family theme that ran throughout and threatened to choke me up. Mia Sheridan excels at putting the reader into the headspace of each character. It’s a talented writer indeed who can elicit emotions vicariously.
I did a combo read with the audiobook and both Carly Robins and Keith Brown gave phenomenal performances. I can’t adequately articulate the way in which their narration elevated all the emotional interpersonal moments as well as the intensity of given situations. Between Sheridan’s immersive and raw prose and Robins’ and Brown’s vocal talents bringing it to life, I was held rapt!
THE FIX is completely spellbinding with themes of trauma, grief, courage, resilience and love. If you’re looking for an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride you can’t put down, with tons of emotional impact, you NEED to read this! ____

Woah - I think I’m still processing a few events…..
The first ten chapters of this book are unbelievably intense. Sheridan throws you straight into danger, fear, and desperation, and the emotional weight is heavy. People have been mentioning trigger warnings and don’t let that be ignored. The beginning is hard. This part is where the story earns its intensity, and it absolutely deserves clear warnings because of the subject matter.
Trigger warnings
After that overwhelming first act, the book gives you what feels like a slight emotional break. Not in plot, but in tone. Just enough space to wonder whether the rest of the story can possibly maintain that level of intensity. And then comes the eleven years later moment. That eerie phone call, the “do you want a do-over” line… it was creepy in exactly the right way. It had my whole brain firing with “No way. Absolutely not. What?!” vibes. And the wild part is that this shift doesn’t lessen the story—it recharges it. You go from quiet dread to full-throttle suspense again immediately.
From there, the story never lets up. Every chapter adds something—new danger, new emotional fallout, new reveals. And by Chapter 55, my jaw was literally hanging open. I had to reread the scene to make sure I hadn’t imagined it. I did not see that coming. It’s shocking, dark, and a testament to how deeply Sheridan can twist a moment without making it feel cheap or sensationalized.
One of the things that impressed me most is how this book brings together characters with unbelievable inner strength. It’s impossible not to root for them. Even the character I initially didn’t connect with ends up showing this fierce, unexpected resilience. And Posey - the story started with her and then I forgot about her and then all of a sudden she’s brought in here and there, and by the end my whole concept of her was flipped in a different way. She ended up being such a quietly powerful presences in the book. She was perfectly executed.
Meanwhile, the characters you’re not supposed to like are exactly that: whiny toads. Pathetic, petty, and morally bankrupt. People you definitely don’t root for and definitely not the winners in the story.
Overall, this is an unputdownable book. Sheridan crafts a story that starts with a punch to the gut, pulls you through emotional minefields, rebuilds tension in an entirely new way after the time jump, and never stops surprising you. I tore through it.
Five stars, no hesitation. Sheridan delivers yet again.
Okay, Mia, I see you. And you are meant to write thrillers! Teehee.
But seriously. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I can’t compare it with anything else. Loved the character development. Loved her writing. Loved how everything came together in the end.
Go in blind, but check your trigger warnings because there is a lot of on page things that may not be for everyone. As with all of her thrillers.
Such an interesting mix of a suspenseful psychological thriller and a second chance romance with found family themes. I love it when completely different genres collide, and the author did a great job of making it blend seamlessly.
Although advertised for NA I found there to be quite dark / heavy / graphic scenes, so if you’re worried about this book being juvenile..dont be! And if you’re worried about this book being TOO dark, then maybe check up on your triggers!
I think the narration was excellent! Thank you for the gifted copy of the audiobook!
Special thanks to OTRPR for the gifted book & inviting me to the virtual tour! I combined my reading with the audiobook narrated by Carly Robins & Keith Brown who both did a phenomenal job with their narration! 🎧 ——
The book begins with the happy, teenage life of the 𝑏𝑒𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑒 Cami but quickly moves to the 𝑎𝑓𝑡𝑒𝑟 when a violent home invasion permanently changes Cami’s future and the people who knew her. Eleven years later, Cami is running a small business despite leaving pieces of herself behind but gets a very eerie call from a robotic woman’s voice asking if she’d like a “do over” with the video of a little boy kidnapped in a secluded room that can mean only one thing. She’s threatened to not go to the police and is left with only one person she can ask help — the classmate whose life she derailed many years ago following the home invasion.
I’m going to start off by saying the home invasion is INTENSE and written in such spectacular detail that it might upset some readers and triggering to others. However knowing this, you want to go in as blind as possible, as I did, because I promise you, this thriller is worth your time until the last page. My heart was pounding from the beginning but had me dizzying in the second half of the book with all the twists and turns it took. There’s also some romance with a little extra kick of spice in one chapter if you’re in the mood for some heat!
Mia Sheridan not only writes a jaw-dropping, spicy thriller but she also writes trauma and revenge served cold REALLY WELL placing her on my top list of auto-buy thriller authors! I can always count on Over The River PR to introduce me to amazing new-to-me authors, which is how I decided to dive into this book blindly and I’m extremely satisfied and now left with a twisty thriller hangover. 5 sizzling stars to both the book and audio!
I enjoyed this book. It had just the right amount of character development, story building and plot twists. When the tension built it culminated well without dragging on into implausible story arcs that left me rolling my eyes.
The summary of this novel is quite vague regarding the details of the home invasion the protagonist and her family suffers through during the plot. The attack spans several beginning chapters, but I’ll share the specifics of what happens under a spoiler tag for those who prefer a warning when it comes to triggering content like this, as I don’t think it’s fair to spring it onto a reader without warning. Spoiler:
The entire home invasion scene is shown in detail, likely to let the reader experience Cami’s desperation, rage, and her need to get back at their attackers... However, I still think content warnings should have been provided for this event, considering there's no warning of rape in the synopsis, alongside the genres being listed as “general fiction” and “romance”, which feels misleading. I wish this had been tagged appropriately in the synopsis/book introduction, as it was startling to stumble onto blindly. I hope this can be addressed in the published edition.
Onto the actual review:
2.5 ⭐ rounded up — I really liked the relationship between the main characters. I liked Cyrus, too. But I wasn’t a fan of much else in this novel.
This one had a bit of a slow start. Around the halfway point of the book, though, the story really picks up, as the two main characters work together in order to locate a kidnapped boy without contacting authorities, as they’re warned not to involve police—this leaves the two with plenty of time to properly get to know one another once more after the falling out they had 11 years prior. The author manages to balance the tension of the situation alongside the romance quite well—I liked the relationship between Cami and Rex a lot!
I think I honestly would have liked this book more without the suspense/mystery plotline, though. I don’t usually like contemporary romance novels without a plot, but this would have scored a lot higher for me if it was just a novel about a woman named Cami running her butterfly farm with her nerdy bf. I feel like the mystery plotline got pretty convoluted when it didn’t need to be, taking away from the things that are interesting about this novel.
The plot reminded me a bit of a game I played when I was younger called Heavy Rain. If anyone is familiar with the plot of that game and liked it, I think they might enjoy this—unfortunately, with the combination of certain aspects here, I just don’t think this one was for me, sadly.
Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake Publishing for the ARC.
I loved The Fix! It was emotional and intense, and it completely grabbed hold of my heart from the very start. Cami’s pain and strength felt so real that I couldn’t help but ache for her, and I liked how her healing wasn’t easy or rushed. Rex had his own scars, but I loved the way he showed up for her, steady, patient, and exactly what she needed even when she didn’t realize it. Their connection pulled me in and didn’t let go.
What really stayed with me was how much this story was about rebuilding. I liked that it wasn’t just about falling in love. It was about finding your way back to yourself after everything falls apart. The suspense added a layer of tension that kept me turning pages, but it was the heart and hope that made this story so powerful. It left me feeling deeply satisfied, like I’d been on that journey with them every step of the way.
The Fix by Mia Sheridan is a haunting and emotionally raw romantic suspense and psychological thriller about trauma, second chances, and a race against the clock to save an innocent life. At its heart, it follows Cami Cortlandt, a woman still scarred by the brutal home invasion that claimed her mother and sister eleven years before, who is thrust back into terror when she receives a mysterious call, a chilling video of a boy in danger, and only four days to find him before it is too late.
I have to say from the first page this book gripped me in a way I was not expecting, and it stayed with me long after I closed it. What stood out most was how deeply Sheridan draws you into Cami’s world, making every emotional bruising and tentative hope feel intensely human. Cami’s strength and vulnerability resonated so much with me, especially as she navigates guilt, pain, and the unbearable pressure of confronting her past to save a child who may be tied to her own history.
The dynamic between Cami and Rex Lowe adds another layer of richness, as their shared past and reluctant partnership slowly blossoms into something tender and genuine amidst the suspense. I appreciated how the writing balances the piercing tension of the mystery with moments of quiet connection and hope, weaving themes of resilience, healing, and forgiveness through the narrative.
The thriller elements are genuinely suspenseful, the pacing brisk, and the emotional stakes high, making this a compelling read if you are drawn to stories that explore how trauma shapes us yet does not have to define us.
My rating: 4 out of 5 stars. I am giving this book four stars because of how powerfully it made me feel and how invested I became in the characters’ journeys. Some of the subject matter is very intense and might be difficult for sensitive readers, but for me the emotional authenticity, layered themes, and gripping plot made it a memorable and heartfelt reading experience.
It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a thriller, and The Fix reminded me just how satisfying a well-paced, twisty story can be. Mia Sheridan delivered a suspenseful ride that kept me guessing from start to finish.
The tension builds steadily, and just when I thought I had things figured out—bam! Another twist I didn’t see coming. Sheridan does a great job of weaving emotional depth into the suspense, making the characters feel real and the stakes personal. I appreciated that the plot didn’t rely on overused tropes or predictable reveals. It kept me engaged and genuinely surprised.
If you’re in the mood for a gripping thriller that blends emotion with unexpected turns, this one’s worth picking up.
Unfortunately, I had to give my first DNF in a very long time, as I ended up skimming more than reading so I don’t think I can properly rate it. I love this author’s writing, but there are absolutely NO trigger warnings and that’s a real problem because there are some on-page rape and child rape scenes within the first few chapters. After discovering that gruesome fact the hard way, I checked here on Goodreads and found that it is very dark overall. I have never read a story from this author like this before, and with no trigger warnings, I went into it with very different expectations. I’m sure for readers who are not bothered by those types of things, this will be an incredible book. I’m just not into those kinds of horrors described in detail on page.
It was good… until it wasn’t. The ending fell kinda flat. I’m a total sucker for a good romance, but „It Has Always Been You“ just didn’t hit. My guy barely even knew her, and she basically blew up his entire life 💀
And don’t even get me started on her blind trust in him — all that “he’ll always come for me” and “he’d move mountains for me” energy like, bestie… you knew him for what, a month? Be serious. The author really fumbled the timing here, because none of it made sense.
Rex Lowe, the man that you ARE!! This was an excellent mix of tenderness and heartbreak and I ate it up. Please know this book is VERY dark and depicts a lot of violence, but it’s so important to understand the things these characters have endured and the strength and resilience they possess. Heed trigger warnings and proceed with caution .
