The Whispering Bones

Rate this book
‘Like a python after a meal, he had rested. But now the hunger was rising again…’

A serial murderer stalks the affluent suburbs of North London. The victims are found drained of blood, surrounded by bizarre arrangements of small animal bones.

For seven years, DCI Oswald Lennox has chased a ghost, his once razor-sharp instincts dulled by insomnia and memory lapses. The killer is getting bolder, and Lennox is starting to fear that the biggest clue might be the one he’s already forgotten.

PC Olivia Blackwood’s ADHD makes her unpredictable but brilliant—when she’s focused. Assigned to shadow Lennox, she’s the last person he wants on the case, and she knows it. But as they close in on the killer, a buried secret binds them in ways neither expected—just as the murderer sets their sights on a final, devastating strike.

In the electrifying debut of this new crime series, Andrew Lowe crafts a haunting story of trauma, obsession and evil hiding in plain sight.

Perfect for readers who loved Mark Billingham's Tom Thorne, Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan, and William Shaw's DS Alexandra Cupidi series.

Final thoughts
When books lean on sex to make a book good, you lose me. I bought the book based on both the cover, the blurb and the premise this was going to be a book full of murder mystery. Chapter 3- this has now been donated to the charity shop. It wasn't worth the money I spent on it. It might get better, but I can't rate it personally, on the basis- this book wasn't my cup of tea and - why is sex so central in the opening of the book? I mean you had the basis here for a brilliant book. Intriguing enough detective, brilliant opening with a scene which felt like something you'd write for your creative writing class- scripted but enjoyable.

Before thoughts
Looked like a gothic horror at first glance and was the only book at ASDA less than a fiver. So I picked it up. I am very confused because I know Andrew Lowe is somewhat of a household name (at least in the circles I'm in) yet this book has 11 reviews?????? What is that about? I guess that might be why it was less than a fiver, but it was on sale, and I loved the cover, I thought it was pretty. Lenox and Blackwood is a name familiar to me, and I'm so glad this is the first book in the series.

I will also say, this was the only book in ASDA I wasn't a arc reader for. So that also motivated the purchase. Uncategorised because I have 0 idea what it is about. Some killers cast no shadow? Gothic vibes? Mystery?

When we say we want blind date with a book, we should just grab a book we have no idea about that looks interesting, without reading the blurb. Probably going to have more fun with this than with my other blind dates with books. Looking forward to it.

The Whispering Bones by Andrew Lowe is book 1 in the Lennox & Blackwood series. It is the first book by this author that I have read although I have another of the author’s books on my tbr pile which I can’t wait to read. DCI Oswald Lennox has tragedy in his past and uncertainty in his future. PC Liv Blackwood has ADHD and finds some things difficult to cope with but is brilliant in other ways. Lennox mentors Blackwood and together they are a great pairing of characters, with such different personalities. A series of murders tests them all but what a fabulous read. The story leads the reader on a merry dance, and I didn’t have my suspicions till it became obvious. It was very hard to put down and I’m really looking forward to the next in the series.

This is the first book in a new series by this author and it's fantastic. The main characters are DCI Oswald Lennox and PC Olivia Blackwood. Lennox is struggling with some memory lapses while PC Blackwood has ADHD. She is assigned to the team to be mentored by Lennox. I love the relationship between the two. The differing personalities work so well together with the rashness and exuberance of Liv with the more studied approach of Oz providing some humour throughout. I enjoyed seeing how both gradually begin to gel with each other.

The story itself involves a killer who is murdering people of a certain high status and who seems to have started again after a hiatus of a few years. I liked how there were some discrepancies to make things even more puzzling and it kept me intrigued all the way throughout. The ending has me on tenterhooks for the next book with both determined to look into a cold case involving the disappearance of an old friend of Liv's. I can't wait.

This my 1st time reading something by this author and I am happy I took a chance. This is the 1st book in a new series, and it was great. The main character DCI Oz Lennox & PC Liv Blackwood develop a good chemistry as the story goes along. Lennox is starting to have memory lapses and Blackwood has ADHD, but they both are pushing forward. There are several secondary characters that may pose problems for the leads as the series goes forward, but I’m sure together, they can handle it. The story revolves around a killer who is murdering people in a ritualistic manner. Using bones as part of the display of the bodies. There were several red herrings that kept me guessing and which I didn’t fully work out until the end. I am looking for to the next book which will be dealing with a cold case close to Blackwood.

3.5 rounded up to a 4 because it's got potential. I love Andrew's other book series involving Jake Sawyer, so was intrigued by this one. New characters, new settings, etc. It's certainly more description (in terms of scenes, ADHD symptoms, etc) and police procedure heavy than the other series, so it took me a while to get into. Even by the end, I wasn't sure, but I liked the main characters (eventually), and I can see the series being quite good now that all the character intros are out of the way and the investigations can take place. Interesting and enjoyable, I wouldn't be adverse to reading the next in the series, but I don't think I'd rush out to read it.

More please!

Initially, I was disappointed that this author’s latest book wasn’t another in the Jake Sawyer series, however, this first of a new series (I hope) was excellent and I look forward to more. Being well written and with intelligent, likeable characters, it has restored my faith in serial killer, police procedural stories.

Good read, a little confusing at times

I liked the story, but it found it a little confusing to read at times, but i guess that took you into the mind if the characters. Will give the next books a go and see if I can grasp it more. Could have done with a little more explanation on the ending, but an overall good read

A good read. Recommended.

As detective thrillers go, this one was a slow burner, interesting, and then I got obsessed and finished it with a couple of late night reads two afternoons. A good finish.

This book held my interest from start to finish. I had no idea who the villain was, until the Police did. An edge of the seat page turner

cracking good read

Couldn’t put this down. My two new pairings. Looking forward to reading more of Lennox and Blackwood’s cases, and to see how the relationship develops.

Whispering Bones

At first I thought, oh boy, this is slow. But as the tale progressed so did the pace. Ending brilliantly, and certainly not sluggish.

Different

A bit different from other of Andrew Lowe's books but still enjoyed . Lennox and Blackwood make a strange team.
