“I gave this book 5 stars. I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot about being an introvert—it truly describes me as well. The book also refreshed my memory about hearing tests and audiograms. I grew up with regular tests, but over time, we forget the details. I especially loved that the author included faith in her story. I, too, love Jesus, and I want to thank her for sharing so honestly.”

I am Susan van der Walt, a married woman with a deep love for dogs, who are my children in many ways. As an introvert with sensorineural hearing loss, I’ve learned to navigate life through unique challenges and perspectives.
Writing Silent Courage: An Introvert’s Authentic Journey with Hearing Loss was a journey of self-discovery. It took me back to my past, reliving many painful childhood moments, and also allowed me to recognize the strength and resilience I’ve built. From a vulnerable child to the strong woman I am today, I’ve seen how far I’ve come.
I understand what it’s like to live with hearing loss. My research into the science and theory of hearing and hearing loss has deepened my appreciation for my residual hearing and the technology that allows me to hear, thanks to advances in digital hearing aids.
As an introvert, I treasure deep connections and quality friendships. These connections are essential not only for my emotional well-being but also for accommodating and supporting my hearing loss.
My Japanese Chin dog, Sassy, and our new addition, Kanta (a Chinorkie—Japanese Chin/Yorkie mix), bring joy and laughter into my life. Sassy’s funny antics always brighten my mood, and Kanta’s lively spirit adds even more fun to our home.
My faith has carried me through many challenges and remains a source of hope and joy.
Thank you for exploring Silent Courage. I hope it fosters a sense of community and serves as a practical guide as you navigate your journey as an introvert with hearing loss. Together, we can find the strength to weather the storms of life.
