Seven college friends. One hidden paradise. An ancient horror that hungers for new faces.
When seven Dartmouth students get lost exploring an underground grotto during their Caribbean spring break, they emerge to find themselves trapped on a mysterious hidden beach - a pristine crescent of white sand surrounded by towering cliffs that offer no escape. At first, their private paradise seems like the adventure of a lifetime. But as the sun sets on their first night, they realize something is terrifyingly wrong on this forgotten shore.
One by one, they begin to disappear. Their voices echo from the treeline, calling out to those who remain. But the voices are wrong - perfect yet somehow hollow, like something practicing how to sound human. As their numbers dwindle, the survivors must confront an ancient horror that hungers for more than just flesh and blood. Something that wears familiar faces while it hunts. Something that has been collecting new voices for centuries.
Some beaches don't appear on any map. Some paradises are meant to stay lost. And some faces belong to things that were never human at all.

“Their voices echo from the treeline, calling out to those who remain. But the voices are wrong perfect yet somehow hollow, like something practicing how to sound human.”
This line hint at the beauty of the island turning into a trap, and something supernatural that pretends to be human but isn’t quite right.
Okay, imagine you and your friends go on a fun trip to a secret island that no one knows about. The beach is super pretty: soft white sand, tall cliffs all around, like a hidden playground. At first you think it’s the most magical place ever.
But at night, things start to feel strange. Your friends begin to disappear, like playing hide-and-seek but you can’t find them no matter where you look. And you hear voices of your friends calling you, saying “come here,” but the voice sounds a little weird too perfect, like someone practicing to sound like them but not quite right.
Then you find out there is something very old living there, something that doesn’t look like people but copies them. It takes voices, maybe even faces, to trick you. So that playground is actually a trap, and you have to figure out how to escape before the thing catches you or makes you stay forever.
So, the story is kind of like a scary fairy tale: something that looks fun becomes scary, and you must be brave and clever to find your way out.
This book is about the danger of appearances and how something that seems perfect and beautiful might hide danger. It reminds us that not everything that looks safe is safe, and sometimes we must question what we hear or see. The horror isn’t just about monsters; it’s about the fear of losing people, of being fooled, and of being trapped in something that pretends to be friendly but is not.
It also touches on friendship and trust: when we are with friends, we assume we can trust what they say or who they are. But if something can mimic that, we must rely on courage and logic (and maybe trust ourselves) to find the truth and escape.
I think this is a very good book: it does what a horror / thriller should do which create dread, surprises, and emotional stakes. I dock a little bit because of small weaknesses and genre familiarity, but overall it delivers a strong, memorable experience which prompt my rating a 4.5/5 stars ⭐️.
The Devil’s Mouth by David Lambert 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This is a fantastic heart pounding horror/thriller book! It’s such an intense and suspenseful story, that I flew through it!
When a group of college friends go on a Caribbean spring break trip, it is not the relaxing and fun vacation they had imagined. This island has a horrific supernatural entity and no one is safe from its wrath! The book is very descriptive, so the picture in my head was filled with all of the terrors! The story takes off fast and doesn’t let up! I was at the edge of my seat the entire read!
I listened to the audio version and the narration was great! *This book is out now and I highly recommend it!!*
