When I Win The World Ends

Rate this book
Once a year, the world's best trainers compete for the title of World Champion. Toril, the favorite, has dedicated her life to battling. Aracely, the underdog, has not. In fact, she barely knows the rules. She didn't even build her own team. She's a mockery of the sacred bond between trainers and Pokémon, one Toril swears to eliminate.

But Aracely makes plays that shouldn't be possible. She reads opponents as though reading their minds, predicts exactly what they'll do. And now, she's made another prediction, one far more unsettling: "When I win, the world ends."

Clumsy and amateurish at parts, but overall reading this you overwhelmingly understand that it was written by someone who GETS it. Who gets sports, who gets competition, hell, who gets storytelling. Beyond the themes, knows how and why people get excited, have fun, what they expect and when to give it to them and when to not. Though it sometimes is a bit edgy and risked getting pretentious, it is self aware enough to always balance it with levity and, well, hype! It was thought provoking, got me to reflect on my relationship to my hobbies, and led to several engaging conversations with friends. It made me want to write again, it made me want to compete again. I’d say that’s worth, despite the rough patches, absolutely recommending people read it.

This one's real good, although I feel that's mostly because Bavitz is a god of prose, I'm a huge nerd for competitive pokemon, and I beta read the damn thing.

Oh yeah, maybe also because I wrote When I Win I Will Take What's Mine, that might also contribute

It is all that. Logos vs luck never getting an answer rules.
