Lou #1 Secret Diary is probably one of the most adorable and awesome GNs I've had the pleasure to read. It's a children's/middle-grade graphic novel that's about a girl named Lou who chronicles her daily adventures and interests in a series of comic panels taken from her diary. She sports an interest in fashion, has a mother who's a die-hard video game addict, and a best friend (Mina) who's usually grouchy, but not afraid to stand up for Lou and speak her mind on a number of different things.
The GN is mostly a series of one-shot stories (some of them are continuous because of the cast of characters and some recurring jokes). They revolve around Lou's day-to-day encounters, including crushing on a boy in her neighborhood, somewhat embarrassing, yet grand moments at school, family contentions (including a stern grandmother who shows her gentle side in unexpected moments), among other events. The humor in it is lighthearted and made me chuckle several times. The bit references (i.e. Mario of Nintendo fame) were a nice touch. I also liked watching the chemistry between the characters unfold for each bit story.
The artwork has an interesting colorization and style, one I think those in the age group intended for this GN, as well as beyond it, will enjoy. It's only one volume in an intended series, but I think this will make a fine introduction for those who enjoy coming-of-age, humor focused comics.
Overall score: 4/5
Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Lerner Publishing Group (Graphic Universe).
Really, 3 1/2 stars. I thought it was great, with two odd exceptions: 1) I had trouble figuring out the age range for the book. Mostly it seemed like it was suited for elementary school-aged readers, until the sequence about the mom's back story involving a pregnancy test. Of course, those show up on television commercials now, so I guess it wasn't so bad. 2) I had trouble with the mom in general, who seems to have no visible means of support. She seems to be a wannabe writer and former fast food clerk, but what does she live on? Also, she's very self-centered in a few of the stories, in ways that make her difficult to like. For instance, she wants a Mother's Day gift, but ruins Valentine's Day for her daughter and for her own would-be Valentine date, all because she's too caught up in her video games. The supporting characters were really good, almost better developed than the mom. Lou was clever and interesting, clearly very creative and independent. I really liked her. In the style of other European humorous graphic albums, each story is only a page or two in length, so there are a lot of little tales in this book. Many involve first crushes or immature adults trying to fall in love, so there's a theme running through the book.
It was Flaubert who, in his 1869 novel L'éducation sentimentale, introduced the concept of the MILF to the French literary canon. However, it would not be until Julien Neel's Journal infime that the archetype would be perfected.
(For real, though, this was very cute, and not too hard to understand in French. 3.5)
This was a very cute comic book aimed at pre teen girls. I loved the artwork in this comic book. The characters are quite simply drawn and yet the use of facial expression is so accurate that it made my day. It has the drama of a pre teen girl and ya. Just read this comic book it is really good.
Pretty cute! I read this because I wanted something new to read and I haven't read a graphic novel in I don't even know how long. I was scrolling through my Kindle, and I thought it looked cute, so I decided to read it. I love how her Mom was drawn. She was super silly! It was a little hard to read because the chapters were kinda scattered. I mostly read it because of how adorable the style is. It makes a good time killer if you like graphic novels or like cute little books. 👍🏽
Another French graphic novel import, Lou is your average middle school girl. She loves theatre (that's THEATRE, with a re), makes her own clothes, and has a huge crush on someone who she can't bring herself to talk to. She also has an awesome best friend, and a video game loving mom who she's determine to set up with the guy across the hall. Life is never dull for Lou!
I am confused how Lou's mother is able to pay rent. She is always shown coming in from being out somewhere or playing video games. She's supposedly writing a novel, but I can't image she's bringing in a whole lot of money doing that. So I did wonder about that. Maybe Lou's grandmother supports them.
It was cute. Lou gets frustrated with her mom sometimes, because she's not very mom-like. Her mom is a bit of an airhead, and sure does love her video games, but you can tell Lou wouldn't want her to really be different.
The story is kind of episodic, but there is an underlying story under it all. Lou has a crush on Tristan, who lives in her apartment building. Although the two become friends, and he even teaches her to play guitar, Lou can't get up the courage to tell him she likes him. Like, likes him likes him. Lou's mom has a crush on Richard, the guy who lives in the apartment across the hall from them. Lou is determined to get her mom and Richard together, and Richard clearly likes her, but Lou's mom can be a little oblivious.
Most of the book is very light, but there are some more serious moments, like when Lou tells her best friend Mina the little she knows about her dad, or when Lou's mom sends her to a psychiatrist. Even these moments, which could be very serious, are told in a lighthearted way, and it never really gets to deep into things.
The story ends when Richard has left for the summer and Lou's mom has been unable to tell him how she feels, and just as Lou gets up the courage to tell Tristan she likes him, he moves away without a word to her. I assume there will be more stories about Lou, but as far as I can tell, no more have been written yet.
