Good book in the beginning. But the characters never quite developed, and the storyline became very predictable towards the end. 3 1/2 stars.

Historical novel about immigrants coming to the USA in the early 1900s. The main characters are two young women, one from Italy and one German-American, who learn from each other as they navigate the Ellis Island bureaucracy, dangers and their status as women. A good reminder that, in over 100 years, some things have not changed.

Interesting book that talks about the management of Ellis Island and the different experiences of immigrants. Great historical fiction novel that provides a glimpse into Ellis Island and New York City in 1900 - 1905.

I very much enjoyed this book. Francesca, who had just arrived at Ellis Island only to have her sister Maria pass away before they could get through customs. I feel that I learned very much about what they went through when they got to Ellis Island, and after. The characters were alive. Good read

This one quickly made it to the top of my five star favs. I enjoyed both of their stories, their struggles, their perseverance.
These two young ladies will stay with me long after the last page was turned.
