Art appreciation made accessible, relevant and entertaining; writer, curator, and YouTube sensation James Payne demystifies great works of art.
"James Payne's YouTube Channel "Great Art Explained" gained a huge and appreciative worldwide audience. This beautifully put-together book is simply the best introduction to the lifelong pleasure and rewards of looking at pictures since Gombrich. An instant classic." — Stephen Fry
Based on the popular and enormously successful YouTube channel of the same name, Great Art Explained unveils the fascinating stories behind some of the world's most iconic paintings and sculptures, proving that there's more to art than just watching paint dry.
Art can be thrilling, and resonate on a deep personal level. It is how you view the work, place it in context and understand its history that makes an artwork truly come alive.
A fresh approach to a classic subject, James Payne's no-nonsense analysis sheds new light on 30 masterpieces from around the globe and reveals what makes them truly timeless works of art.
Each chapter delves into not only the art itself but also the artist's life, as well as the work’s place in their wider oeuvre; in other words, what makes it "great."
From Hilma af Klint's occult altarpieces to Claude Monet's Water Lilies, Botticelli's The Birth of Venus to Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed, each artwork is explored with clarity and passion.
Whether a seasoned art enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this book promises to deepen your appreciation and enrich your understanding of some of the world's greatest treasures.
James Payne is the creator of the fantastic YouTube channel where art masterpieces are clearly explained. It’s now in book form as he writes about the context and art historical significance of masterpieces by JMW Turner, Frida Kahlo, Hokusai, Hilma Af Klint and many more.
I've been watching Youtube channel of same name for years now and love it. This is same but as a book. Which means it's great, captivating introduction to great art works. Author really knows how to ignite passion for art. Book itself is quality looking and of fresh design. Everything is as it should be and for its price great value.
I love his YouTube videos, so I have to like the writing. The book is carefully crafted, so I have to love the images and layout. And I love art, so how could I ever give less than 5 stars? Keeps its mission simple, its statements about each piece brief without being reductive. Got it from the library but will be looking for a copy to buy and add to my art library. A wonderful way to get inspired!
I have a feeling that this will be my book of the year 2025. A must-read for every art lover! Payne’s YouTube channel is the only YouTube channel I subscribe to (and his videos the only ones I actually watch on YouTube on a regular basis) and this book is just as good as his videos.
I have been a follower of James Payne’s work for years and a proud member of his Patreon community. His book Great Art Explained is nothing short of a treasure. Receiving it felt like Christmas morning! James’ YouTube channel has inspired me to visit museums and galleries as often as possible, and this book captures that same excitement and curiosity in print.
What makes James’ approach truly exceptional is his ability to blend respect for the artwork with deep historical context, while thoughtfully exploring the personal, political, and religious motivations behind each piece. This balance makes his book a remarkable gift for everyone, from novice art lovers to seasoned aficionados. Each page feels like a guided tour with a passionate, insightful companion, offering new perspectives and fostering a deeper appreciation for the stories behind the art we encounter.
This book is not just an exploration of great art; it is an invitation to experience it with curiosity, understanding, and joy. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Lots of things to like about this book. The art is organized chronologically. The viewpoint is historical and biographical (for the artist). I learned some things reading it, but the depth of knowledge isn't as much as an art professor would give. I found the YouTube videos a lot more interesting. I did find it annoying that the art piece that was discussed was at the end of the chapter, so I had to flip to the end of the chapter to see what the author was referencing. Some pictures lacked detail and I wished some had closer closeups such as "Along the River During the QingMing Festival" and "Dusasa II". Overall, a quick and entertaining read.
If you watch art videos on YouTube, you probably know Great Art Explained. James' videos are super insightful, and so is his book. It features 30 stories behind some of the world’s greatest masterpieces. And honestly, I couldn’t help hearing James’ voice in my head while reading them. Loved reading this.
