Detective Matthias Honeywell #4
DS Cassie Malone
Erie City, Pennsylvania

It’s Friday night and the weekend beckons for both detectives with plans laid. However, in the late afternoon, there’s an armed robbery and a shooting at the West Erie Veterinary Clinic. Cassie’s blood runs cold as her husband Shawn is the vet in charge of the clinic. The hunt for the three perpetrators is on. Meanwhile, Matthias's girlfriend Emma Anderson, a photographer with ErieLIVE, has the whereabouts of her troubled sister Nell hanging over her and continues to tread the potentially tricky waters of her relationship with Matthias and the demands of her job as a journalist. As the difficult investigation progresses, it becomes way more deadly and most dangerous of all, there’s a sniper who seems to be one step ahead of the police team.

This is such a good series, rich in the atmosphere of its setting and interesting characters who have excellent dynamics between them. I like my central protagonists to be multifaceted and Matthias certainly is. He’s complex, a very good detective as well as being kind and caring. The relationship between him and Emma continues to be a fascinating one and it’s definitely evolving. Cassie can literally growl (!) if need be but is also very warm and her relationship with her granddaughter Alyssa is heartwarming. Cassie has a great deal to bear in this one.

The plot is very well thought out, there’s nothing unnecessary to pad it out, there are plenty of twists and turns in the investigation and it’s delivered with good, crisp, concise writing. It becomes a dangerous race against time and I literally gasp at one point – talk about pulling on heartstrings! It’s gritty, fast paced and exciting. The tension rises and falls to give breathing space but ramps up to any especially taut ending.

This is another very good addition to this series, it’s a definite page turner and I can’t wait to read what happens to these characters next.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to HarperCollins/One More Chapter for the much appreciated early copy in return for an honest review.

3.75 / 5.0

I’ve not read this series, and it’s a great book which can almost be read as a standalone. I suppose the only thing that dropped a star was how boring and round the circles the plot felt, almost like it was dragging its heels in to extend longer. Just when you think progress is made, it feels like a convenient barrier is placed, routine stories were checked again which in the grand scheme of things is what a police investigation is - but it created a plateau in the plot which killed off momentum. Near the end is where this picks up massively, and ramps up which picks the book back up. Overall it’s not a bad read, I like the characters, I like the dynamic between the team. I’ll probably give this series another chance to get a better understanding.

The book centres around Erie, when a local vet is shot during a robbery where dectective Matthias Honeywell and his partner Cassie Malone are tasked with pursing the perpetrators- but just as they are close to solving the truth - a sniper targets those involved in the case, leaving no chance for Matthias to interview those involved. Emma is a photographic journalist, and with the news of the shooting - her instinct kicks on, but what she discovers could cause an ethical dilemma between Matthias and Cassie. As the investigation turns to search for the sniper - Cassie and Emma are kidnapped and the women are forced to draw on their resourcefulness to survive - will they manage to escape or is it time against them?

I have to admit this ‘secret’ is abit bizarre - we don’t actually see how much of an impact it has in the plot due to the kidnapping event- but I am intrigued on how this plays out in the next book! It’s a great book, a few things to work on but has great potential to be a banger!

When I have picked up every book of the Matthias Honeywell series, I’ve been guaranteed, at the very least, a good mystery. That’s no different with this one, the latest entry. It’s fast-paced and I don’t want to stop reading until I find out exactly who’s behind everything. It is, on the whole, a good mystery, both the individual book and series. The only thing that really stops me giving it higher than 3 stars is that, really, I don’t care about the characters beyond the mystery. I want to discover how everything happened and why. I do not care so much about the personal travails of the characters outside of that. But, if I’m reading these books simply for the mystery aspect, they do scratch that itch very well.

An interesting, tension filled instalment although some motives miss the mark.

No Stone Left Unturned is book four in the Honeywell crime series and delivers plenty of what you expect: engaging character relationships, a steady build of tension toward the climax, and a trail of red herrings that kept me guessing. Some of my favourite moments were the relationships between the characters, you really feel the strength of their bonds and the worry they must be going through.

Where it faltered for me was in the logic behind certain character decisions. A few motives felt questionable, particularly the killer leaving the crime scene only to return later — a choice that didn’t seem to fit the rest of his behaviour and left me feeling a bit confused.

That said, I still enjoyed how this instalment clearly tied into the earlier books even though I hadn’t read them. Even with its flaws, I’d definitely read more of the series, I’m curious to see where the underlying plot goes from here.

Taut and twisty, it captivated me at the outset, and kept me guessing until the very end. Love this new series set in Erie, PA, with a full range of well drawn characters.

When Detective Honeywell is called to the scene of a robbery turned shooting at a veterinary clinic, the case immediately becomes personal since he knows the man the robbers shot. But he can’t help but question what happened. It doesn’t feel like a true robbery but something personal. Meanwhile, Emma is on hand getting shots from outside the clinic. Given the connection Honeywell has to the case, Emma starts to dig into the background of the victim to try to see if she can uncover any leads to help. Will they be able to find the perpetrator before he strikes again?

As with the previous book, this one focuses a bit more on Matthias, although Emma still gets plenty of page time and adds to the mystery. I enjoyed getting to learn more about the supporting players who populate Matthias’s world. The suspects may not get too much page time, but that doesn’t hamper the plot at all, which is filled with clues, red herrings, and enough twists to keep the pages turning. I always had a hard time putting the book down. I enjoyed watching the characters and their relationships grow out of what happened in the last book, although you don’t need to read the books in order. Still, with how excellent these books are, you’ll want to read them anyway, so you might as well start with the first. This book left me anxious for the next in the series. Annette Dashofy is one of the best mystery writers we have today. If you aren’t already a fan, fix that today.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

My heart is still pounding! Once again Annette Dashofy takes us on a thrill ride. When Detective Sargent Cassie Malone's husband Dr. Shawn Malone is shot at his veterinary clinic, Detective Matthias Honeywell leads the investigation as Cassie impatiently waits at the hospital for news about Shawn. Just when it seems he has turned the corner, her daughter and granddaughter are struck by a hit and run driver. By this time, Matthias has identified the man they suspect of shooting Shawn. His car is the one that ran the girls down. As body after body is found and identified, the police are no closer to finding the perpetrator. With Cassie trying to split her time between taking care of granddaughter Alissa at home, yet being at the hospital with Shawn and now daughter Denene, Matthias' girlfriend Emma stays with Cassie as a friend and backup. Both the hospital and Cassie's home have a police guard, but when the police officer at Cassie's is found bound in the trunk of his car, the entire force kicks into high gear.
Other than to say, I could not turn the pages fast enough to get to the resolution, I am not going to say more. Don't want to spoil it for you. Definitely do yourself a favor and read this. It is excellent. tight plot, fast-paced with more to come for readers who love Matthias and Emma and the rest of the Erie PD and ErieLive crew.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this amazing read in exchange for my honest review.

Detective Matthias Honeywell and crew are back for a fourth adventure to prove beyond a doubt that Annette Dashofy is the Queen of Thriller Writers.

This time around, the husband of Matthias’ partner, Cassie, is shot while at work. Matthias and the whole Erie City Police will not rest until the perpetrator is brought to justice. But the lingering question haunts them. “Why would anyone want to kill a beloved veterinarian?”

Part of the genius of Annette Dashofy’s writing is how real these characters feel. It is so easy to believe you actually know and care for each one of them. And none of the characters are perfect. These detectives don’t always magically choose the right way to go. They sometimes let their humanity get in the way of the judgement.

I was introduced to Dashofy’s writing with “The Devil Comes Calling” (the 3rd book in the Detective Honeywell series). At that time, I declared that other writers needed to learn from Ms. Dashofy how to write a thriller. I stand by that claim. But let’s be honest, just shoot for second place. There is no way, in my opinion, you can unseat this Queen. And maybe I’m wrong on that. Maybe she’s the whole dang Monarchy of Thriller Writers.

I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

No Stone Left Unturned by Annette Dashofy is a gripping contemporary crime suspense that I could not put down. It is the fourth book in A Detective Honeywell Mystery series but can be read as a stand-alone.
I enjoyed meeting up with familiar faces. Once more the police work in tantum with photographer, Emma, in the hope of solving a brutal crime. Newspaper archives hold secrets that are clues.
The crimes are far too close to home as an unknown figure goes on a crime spree that seems to be a personal vendetta.
As the body count rises, the law enforcement is left scratching its’ heads.
Annette Dashofy has created a marvellous plotline, with the suspense ramping up. Locations become seedier and darker, to mirror the action. My heartrate rose as I read towards the conclusion. There were times when I gasped out loud, yelling ‘no’ at my book!
There were tender moments too, particularly concerning an elderly dog who was in need of love and care.
All the characters were well drawn and believable. The villain of the piece was evil and brutal. The generations of women were brave beyond belief. As the book ended, it is perfectly poised for a book five in this fabulous series.
You do not want to miss No Stone Left Unturned. It is a fabulous read.
I received a free copy from the publishers. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.

Annette Dashofy delivers another taut and emotionally charged mystery in No Stone Left Unturned, the fourth installment of the Detective Honeywell series. Set against the moody backdrop of Lake Erie, this novel blends small-town atmosphere with high-stakes suspense, crafting a story that’s as compelling as it is chilling.

When a local vet is shot during a robbery, Detective Matthias Honeywell and his partner Cassie Malone are drawn into a case that quickly spirals into something far darker. A sniper begins targeting those connected to the investigation, and journalist Emma Anderson finds herself entangled in a web of secrets that could shatter lives—including her own.

Dashofy’s writing is crisp and immersive, with characters that feel lived-in and layered. The emotional tension between Cassie and Emma adds depth to the fast-paced plot, and the ethical dilemmas faced by the detectives give the story a thoughtful edge. As the mystery deepens and a kidnapping plot unfolds, the stakes rise with every page.

Perfect for fans of Ann Cleeves and Louise Penny, this is a gripping procedural with heart, grit, and a cast you won’t soon forget.

With thanks to Annette Dashofy, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

Detective Matthais Honeywell is back with an all-encompassing mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. This time, Matthais is investigating a robbery and shooting at a local veterinary clinic. The clinic is owned by his partner, Detective Sergeant Cassie Malone’s husband, Shawn. Cassie must stand back while he takes over the case. The men got the money and drugs that they wanted, so why did they shoot Shawn? Everyone loves Shawn who often takes on cases even when the owner can’t pay, as he was doing the night of the robbery. Cassie’s concern right now is for her husband, but that doesn’t keep her from telling her team to hit the streets and find the men who robbed his clinic. Matthais’ girlfriend, Emma Anderson, is a photographer for Erie Live television and walks a fine line between her job, while not questioning him about an investigation. As they follow the leads, they soon find one man dead, strangled. Has one of the men turned against the others? When Cassie’s family is targeted, again, does this have anything to do with her career? Will they find the other men before more threats are directed at her and her family? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

I have been a fan of author Annette Dashofy's Detective Honeywell series since the first book. More than police procedurals, each thriller has a personal component for the main characters, with every investigation revealing more of their backgrounds. In NO STONE UNTURNED, Detective Matthias Honeywell investigates the shooting of his partner, Cassie's husband, a much-loved veterinarian, in his clinic at the close of business one Friday afternoon. Digging into the lives of every clinic employee, looking for any possible motive, he and his team of detectives, follow every lead to locate the perpetrators and discover what is behind the shooting. Was he targeted because of something in his past or was it connected to any of Cassie's past cases? Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Emma, a photographer who covers the crime-beat for the local online newspaper, is frequently on scene when a police action occurs in the city. With different data available at the newspaper offices, she also spends considerable time digging for reasons behind the attack.
This series features well-developed and interesting characters, vengeful villains, plenty of action and heart-thumping suspense! I couldn't put this book down!

Attempted murder becomes personal when the husband of Detective Mattias Honeywell’s partner Cassie Malone is shot and left for dead during a robbery at his veterinary practice. Mattias and the entire Erie Police Department desperately want to find the robbers who wounded Shaun Malone. ErieLIVE photographer Emma Anderson is negotiating her relationship with Mattias and carefully drawing a line between their sometimes conflicting careers. Cassie and Emma have become good friends so she naturally involves herself in the case. This will lead to a totally shocking, nail biting conclusion.
This series has become one of my favorites and No Stone Unturned may be Annette Dashofy’s best. Focusing on Cassie Malone and her family gives new depth to a familiar character while Mattias’ and Emma’s relationship continues to strenthen. As alway, Erie Pennsylvania, gritty, haunting and atmospheric is a character in itself. 5 stars.

I enjoyed this one. The writing is smooth, the flow stays steady, and the characters are easy to like. It works well as a standalone, so you don’t need to commit to the whole series to follow what’s going on. That said, I didn’t love it enough to go back and start from the beginning.

Some twists felt a little predictable, but I’m chalking that up to how much I read in this genre. A few moments stretched things a bit, yet it still carries that true crime feel that keeps you turning pages. I really liked how each main character gets an equal voice and how their paths weave together in a way that makes sense.

If you enjoy police procedurals, true crime vibes, and mysteries with a solid ensemble cast, this might hit the spot. It’s a good pick for readers who like a steady pace without too much chaos.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for an early copy of this book, but as always, all thoughts are my own.

I've been a big fan of Annette Dashofy since the very first Zoe Chambers mystery. I wasn't sure I would like this series as much just because I liked the first so much. But I love this series too, and it is getting better with every book.

Det. Matthias Honeywell's new case is a tough one--his partner's husband has been shot during an armed robbery at his veterinary clinic. With his partner Cassie sidelined on the case (well, sort of sidelined), Matthias relies a bit more on Emma Anderson, his girlfriend and a news photographer. Each of them begins an investigation into the shooting, and soon they all, including Cassie, find themselves in the middle of a more complicated and dangerous situation than they thought.

These are excellent police procedural mysteries, and the relationships between the characters are a huge part of what I love about all of Dashofy's novels. This is another great one, and I highly recommend it.

3.5* Well orchestrated, believable but also not that a cop would...collude... as she did. Sins from the past...

This starts pretty brutally and there are immediate questions about the events and persons present during, before and after the shooting. Thankfully the vet pulls through and the old doggie isn't injured. It's quite transparent that all isn't as it seems.

So begins the investigation into what happened, with a rather brazen perpetrator who keeps it BAU and low-key. The cops' instincts and noses are good but connections aren't made in time and other innocents suffer for the sins of the father. There are some quite brutal but not in TMI scenes, and all ends well. I wasn't good with the female cop sort of colluding with her veterinarian husband's not-that-youthful error, which came back to bite more than just them.

ARC courtesy of NetGalley and One More Chapter/Harper Collins Publishers, for my reading pleasure.

The Detective Honeywell series is a really solid police procedural series, with an added emphasis on Honeywell's personal life and the complicated family situation of his girlfriend, photographer Emma. The cast of regular characters is solid and the various backstories are rich, elevating the experience -- though if it was just the police procedural part, it would still be pretty good.

In this one the author made what I considered a brilliant choice. The opening scene features the shooting of Shawn Malone, the husband of Honeywell's partner, Cassie Malone. Normally, Cassie is the more senior officer and the rock who steadies Honewell. This time, she is the wife of a victim and not too actively involved in the case, and so all perspectives are shifted. It was a brilliant choice and it makes for really interesting interactions.

I have really enjoyed the four books of this series and will definitely be watching for book five, which I think comes out later this year.

No Stone Left Unturned is the fourth in the Detective Marcus Honeywell series, set in Erie, Pennsylvania. This is more of a straightforward police procedural than previous novels, and is an excellent read.

The story begins with a robbery at the vet practice run by the husband of Honeywell's partner. He is shot after the robbery is completed, but what was the motive for the shooting? As Cassie Malone waits for her husband to come out of surgery, Honeywell and the rest of the team investigate. Suspects are identified, but each one ends up dead before they can capture and interrogate them.

The case comes to a terrifying conclusion involving Honeywell's photographer girlfriend Emma. Can Marcus save Emma and solve the case? The tension is high throughout, but the pace really picks up in the final section of a real page turner.

Wow! NO STONE LEFT UNTURNED kept me reading past midnight, as Emma and friends chased a nefarious villain through multiple twists and turns and tense moments to a conclusion I did NOT see coming. Past deeds, hidden or forgotten, can surface with a sometimes terrible cost. Friends, family, and even kind strangers can help, even against a foe cold-hearted enough to attack a veterinarian whom everybody loves. Careful, thorough research can help find answers. Courage can shine in even the youngest among us.
I read this fast, but it continues replaying in my mind, and I can hardly wait for the next book in the series.
Coming in December, so there’s time to read the first three before then.

Here we go again. Book 4 of the Detective Honeywell series!

DS Cassie's husband is injured during a robbery, and it's up to Detective Matthias Honeywell and his girlfriend, Emma (as well as many other characters) to find out why he got injured, and who is out there to hurt Cassie's family.

It's an amazing rollercoaster. Probably easy to guess who the real culprit is.

A great story, and hope there's going to be a book 5 in the future!

The investigation in this fourth book in the Detective Honeywell Mystery series is personal for Mathias when his partner Cassie’s husband is shot during a robbery at his veterinary clinic. The robbers got the cash and drugs they came for so there should have been no need for the shooting. Was Shawn the target all along or was the shooting in retaliation for an arrest Cassie made? The investigation seems to hit a wall when the assailants themselves are murdered. This is another well written, twist filled mystery in this entertaining series.

In No Stone Left Unturned, Annette Dashofy weaves an outstanding and complex police procedural with strong personalities. The characters carry the plot and make it shine even when the hunt gets bogged down. This 4th book in her Detective Honeywell Mystery series begins with a robbery and an attempted murder, one that is a big personal shocker. This hunt touches Emma and all of the cops that Matthias works with and they all refuse to slow down until the villain is found, if only they could figure out who that villain, is! Before he is done the man behind the attempt has literally touched the lives of characters that we love as he tries to kill, hurt, or kidnap even more.

Tense and gripping story

I have come to know Emma and Matthias like old friends now, along with their close friends and co-workers. A beloved local veterinarian is shot during a robbery at his clinic. The fact that the veterinarian is married to Cassie, Matthias' partner, involves the Erie PD in a round-the-clock manhunt for the perpetrators well as their motive. As the police start to close in, Emma, Cassie, and Cassie's young granddaughter are kidnapped and threatened with death. A tense and gripping story and a pleasure to read.

What a great thriller! We follow a story about a vet who was shot during a robbery. His wife is a detective, was this a robbery turned bad or revenge?
Emma is a photographer for the local news but also dating Matthias , who is Cassie's partner. We see all the hurt, damage and emotions as they try and figure out what happened.
This was a great book. You get a feel for the characters and have such a emotional tie to them.
Thank you netgalley and publishers for an earc for my honest opinion.

Erie police detective Cassie Malone’s veterinarian husband Shawn is shot during a robbery of his clinic. When the suspects in the robbery start turning up dead detective Mathias Honeywell needs to figure out if it was really just a robbery gone wrong or something more.

This is a gripping thriller with plenty of twists, turns, and a perpetrator I never saw coming. This series just keeps on getting better.

I accidentally read this thinking it was our group read and # 3 in the Detective Mathias Honeywell series. Oh well, no harm done since I never noticed any gaps in narrative or spoilers from the actual previous book. In this one a local vet is shot in an apparent drug robbery--but all is not as it seems. A solid police procedural and continuation of the characters in the Erie PD and those involved with them.

While this is still a good story, this series is starting to feel a little rinse and repeat to me. It’s fun to read books set in my hometown but Emma and Matthias don’t have a grip on me like Pete and Zoe do. It seems like the next book might be set down in Washington county PA, so maybe we’ll get some crossover?? That would be super cool!
