Tim Flach

His images are a departure from traditional wildlife photography and he has been described as “a potent example of a commercially trained photographer who’s now reaching a global audience through the boom in fine art photography.” He is the author of the books Equus, Dogs Gods and More Than Human.
Tim Flach studied Communications Design at the North East London Polytechnic (1977–1980) and then Photography and Painted Structures at Saint Martin's School of Art (1982–1983). On graduation he briefly assisted Brian Worth, but soon began to attract commissions and was working independently from 1983. Today his clients include the Sunday Times, Cirque du Soleil, Sony, luxury brand Hermès and the Locarno International Film Festival. His images have twice been featured on Royal Mail stamps (2000) and "Working Dogs" (2008) as well as in campaigns for the Minnesota Zoo. Excellent enormous coffee table book. Had to knock off a star because there was one image I hated So Much. That is a me problem and it is an incredible book.

De kern van dit project is een zoektocht: het onthullen van het wezen van de kat.
Tim Flach staat bekend om zijn boeiende en tot nadenken stemmende beelden van het dierenrijk. Hij legt zowel de kracht als de kwetsbaarheid van dieren vast, benadrukt hun onmiskenbare verbondenheid met mensen en brengt het publiek naar een nieuw visueel perspectief op wildlife en natuurbehoud.
Flach heeft vijf hoofdwerken die wereldwijd zijn tentoongesteld, waaronder in Natuurhistorische Musea, van Parijs tot Beijing. Hij heeft zeven internationaal bekroonde boeken, vertaald in meerdere talen.
Als kind had Tim Flach altijd katten om hem heen. Ze waren zijn eerste maatjes en lagen hem het meest na aan het hart. Na zeven fotoprojecten over enkele van de meest bijzondere diersoorten ter wereld, was het dan eigenlijk niet meer dan logisch dat hij uiteindelijk het meest ongrijpbare onderwerp van hen allemaal zou kiezen: de kat.
Geen makkelijk onderwerp, want katten staan bekend als de meest lastigste modellen en ze doen precies waar ze zelf zin in hebben. Ze moeten beslissen of het de moeite van hun tijd waard is om voor de camera te verschijnen. Soms duurde het maar een paar seconden, vertelt Tim Flach, maar soms ook een dag. Of ze werden totaal genegeerd door een kat, zoals Neville, een Siberische kat, die tijdens de shoot gewoon in slaap viel. Wel hadden ze toen de gelegenheid een prachtige close-up van zijn neus te maken.
Een leuk weetje, de allereerste kattenshow werd in 1871 in het Crystal Palace gehouden, slechts op een steenworp afstand van de studio van Tim Flach. De show markeerde de overgang van katten als handige muizenvanger naar geliefde huisdieren, waardoor ze een steeds grotere rol in ons leven zijn gaan spelen. Inmiddels wordt internet overspoeld met de leukste filmpjes en de prachtigste foto’s van dit bijzondere dier.

Tussen de proloog en de inleiding staan al de prachtigste foto’s en daarna wordt het alleen mooier en mooier en vooral indrukwekkend. Foto’s die gevoel en kracht uitstralen, en het bijzondere mooie dier de kat in meerdere facetten weet te belichten. We zien de dualiteit van de kat afgebeeld, de lieve huiskat en het roofdier, en voelen ondertussen die ongrijpbaarheid van dit wezen en de onafhankelijkheid waar de kat bekend om staat.
De prachtige foto’s worden afgewisseld door stukken tekst met diverse wetenswaardigheden over de kat en ook zijn er foto’s die worden begeleidt met informatie over de kat die geportretteerd staat. Bijvoorbeeld de Britse korthaar, de Siberische kat en de weerwolf …ehhh de weerwolf? Ja, weerwolven mogen dan in legenden voorkomen, in de kattenwereld bestaan ze echt – en ze heten Lykoi. (De Lykoi is gedeeltelijk of volledig haarloos. Zijn vacht heeft een unieke uitstraling, Mede door hun sterke prooidrift, intelligentie en beschermende natuur en hun unieke vachtpatroon en masker wordt hij door de mensen geassocieerd met de weerwolf, vandaar ook zijn naam. In Nederland zijn het fokken en houden van deze kat verboden)
Katten is een boek om intens van te genieten. Sowieso voor alle kattenliefhebbers is dit boek het summum onder de geïllustreerde kattenboeken. Een prachtig fascinerend fotoboek dat je niet in de kast wilt verstoppen. Dit is zo’n boek dat een plek verdient waar je het elke dag kunt bewonderen. Dit boek is zonder twijfel het hoogtepunt in mijn verzameling kattenboeken. Als kattenliefhebber pur sang – met een soort van Blauwe Rus en twee Maine Coons als dagelijks gezelschap – laat dit fotoboek precies zien waarom katten al een leven lang mijn hart stelen. Een ode aan katten in al hun mysterie en schoonheid.

A book like Tim Flach's Feline would normally take me one day to read even wirh a late start given the majority of the book are photographs and what text there is are simple paragraphs that don't take too long to devour. Unfortunately the book's awkward size and weight were not the only issues to make this book a beautiful nightmare.
As mentioned the book does have text with several colored photographs of cats being shown before the text is approached. Readers will find one of these spreads will have one page for the text while the opposite is yet another cat photograph. And here text provides readers with the title of the page, the name or species of cat being shown, its age if a kitten and the location of related photos. And towards the bottom are usually captions for pages you may have flipped by to give their breed or species.
Unfortunately for the reader the book is divided into chapters but there is no Table of Contents although one can find something passing more or less in the References part at the back of the book.
For his illustrations the author seems to prefer a black background, which means the book's tone is a bit darker and some details clearly struggle like the barely noticeable black lab while others not so much. The photographer also includes various QR codes throughout the book that opens up to Youtube behind-the-scenes videos for readers interested in getting to know same of the more unique individuals.
And finally the point that made me drop my rating is the fact that once you finish the book then you have another almost twenty pages of captioned photographs - every single photograph (even if the cat appeared multiple times throughout the book) in the book is repeated (sometimes multiply if there is more than one cat not owned by the same person) but this time in miniature and thrown as one of many on the page. Each is either provided with the name of the cat (most especially its pedigree name), its owner and also where it came from such as a cattery or institution or if it is a wild cat then its name, scientific name, where it can be found and its IUCN listing. For those with multiple photos included, half the blurbs were about the individual, how the individual was shot or some such while other portions focused on how the breed came to be and/or breed specifics. And it just dragged to have to read through all of these.
So a great book if you like cat photographs and extras but one that comes with some serious disadvantages given to its size, awkward bulkiness, pedigree cats focus and filler pages.

Dieses Review bezieht sich auf die deutsche Ausgabe, erschienen unter dem Titel "Katzen" im Knesebeck Verlag (ISBN 395728841X).
Katzen sind unbestritten mit die interessantesten Haustiere der Menschen. Das zeigen nicht nur die hunderte Millionen Katzen, die über den Globus verstreut bei den Menschen leben, sondern auch die unzähligen Katzenvideos und ‑fotos in den sozialen Medien. Nun hat auch der bekannte englische Tierfotograf Tim Flach sich diesen Fellknäueln mit diesem Buch gewidmet. Und als Ergebnis hält der Leser eine Mischung aus optischen Leckerbissen und interessanten Texten in der Hand.
Die Fotos in diesem Buch sind einfach nur herrlich und teils sehr genial. Ich möchte gar nicht wissen, wie lange der Fotograf gebraucht hat, um diese Fotos zu erstellen. Hin und wieder lässt er in seine Arbeit blicken, so dass er gelegentlich davon schreibt, wie schwierig es ist, Katzen zu fotografieren. Zusammen mit den Fotos widmet er sich bestimmten Aspekte rund um die Katze. So zeigt er, wie die Katze zum Menschen kam und wie sie (wahrscheinlich) domestiziert wurde, er zeigt die Anatomie und die Besonderheiten von Katzen, er widmet aber auch dem Artenschutz und den fragwürdigen Hybriden ebenso ein Kapitel, wie den Wild- und Großkatzen.
Zusätzlich geht er auf die verschiedenen Rassen ein und stellt einige besondere Rassen vor. Er zeigt aber auch, wie Katzenmerkmale angezüchtet werden und was den Niedlichkeitsfaktor ausmacht. Es ist also eine sehr bunte Mischung aus unterschiedlichsten Themen, die den Katzenfreund anspricht.

Selbstredend sind die Fotos ein Hauptgrund, dieses Buch über Katzen zu kaufen. Es werden nicht nur die unterschiedlichsten (teils arg kuriosen) Rassen vorgestellt, sondern der Fotograf zeigt die Katzen auch in sehr unterschiedlichen Posen und Situationen. Zusätzlich gibt es viele Informationen rund um die Katze, die alle sehr gut zu den ausgewählten Fotos passen, so dass am Ende ein Buch entstanden ist, das nicht nur Katzenfreunde mit einem gelungenen Mix aus Fotografie und Wissensvermittlung erfreuen kann.

Informative. Filled with plenty of information about cats big and small. Answers questions about cat anatomy, different breeds and how these breeds came to exist. The photos are gorgeous. This book is HEAVY and large. A great coffee table book for a cat lover!
