Tethered: The Sensitive Book II

Welcome home.

Emma Reilly isn't alone, and she can feel herself changing for the worst. Staying in Newport just isn't worth the risk anymore. Emma leaves Rhode Island behind for her small hometown in California to focus on ridding herself of this new evil, only to discover that it has already made itself at home in Mullein Creek.

In Richardson's spine-chilling second installment of The Sensitive series, murders unfold, old flames reignite, and tensions build between friends as Emma struggles to comprehend the magnitude of her ability. She quickly learns that the space she once found comfort in is no longer safe, and that life as she knows it can transform turbulently. In Mullein Creek, the old ghosts reintroduce themselves, and the brand-new make their presences abundantly clear. In the midst of grieving, chaos, and confusion, Emma finds herself more isolated than ever. In a home that will never be the same, Emma realizes that one thing will never change; it's the living who do the most damage.

This is one of the few novels I have read where the main character makes all the WORST choices and is INSUFFERABLE the entire time and I *don't* consider giving up halfway. The side characters do most of the work here in ensuring the plot is still moving and interesting to follow even with the bag of wet sand that is Emma. More importantly, their frustration with Emma's behavior lets you the reader know that the behavior is not okay, that she isn't supposed to be acting like this, and that she normally would not. That being said, that last point is a bit ineffective on the grounds that Emma develops a constant pattern of behavior that overrides her character development in the first book. You really come to expect her at any given moment to do the literal worst thing, and then she does. This in turn leads the ending to feel a little unearned (no spoilers!), although given the context of the story, it makes sense.

On an interesting note–major spoilers for the first book, if you are reading a review of the second book without having read the first one–the character of Jack Carlson is tastefully underplayed. Let me explain: I love Freddy Krueger. He's one of my top favorite slashers of all time. Because I need to mention it, he is also very much birds of a feather with Jack (at least, the non-Craven ones). However, the kind of monster he really is starts to lose its hold over the audience because he's so entertaining to watch. Jack could have become something of a Freddy figure. He lends Emma his two cents whenever he knows it's gonna sting, and (very) occasionally feels like the voice of reason when Emma is about to do something stupid. It could have been easy to make him a little too fun to hear from, but the author does not indulge in letting him become anything more than a burden to Emma's already delicate psyche. You never forget how bad he is or the harm he's brought to others, so he firmly stays in the realm of the unfun kind of villainy.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book despite how Emma made me want to pull my hair out, and I could hardly put it down whenever I got a spare moment to read. Also, gotta love the Evangeline’s reference (if you know, you know). I will eagerly await more books in this series.
