Pack Apollo: North Five University

Rate this book
Welcome to North Five University a place where both independence and packs can be found.

Billie Bardot has lived in poverty her whole life and wants nothing more than to make something of herself. Disregarding North U's reputation for omegas finding their packs, she wants to be able to support herself and her mom without any help. Working at the bar pays the bills, but she can dance circles around social media. When word gets back to Pack Apollo, they decide she's exactly what they need for their business and maybe for their pack too.

This book is part of an RH Omegaverse world created between two authors. Each book contains scenes best for an audience above the ages of 18. All books are standalones and don't necessarily have to be read in order.

Most abrupt ending

This book is only ~160 pages long. That's great as far as quick easy reads go. Unfortunately, that was not nearly enough for this FMC. Billie is fantastic, despite her "no pack" ideology collapsing like a house of cards the minute she meets a few hot guys that smell nice. She's intelligent, driven, self-reliant and has a funny, sweet, loving core. I. Need. More. The guys are also pretty decent, some more than others, but we don't get to really spend enough time with them to really fall in love with the new book boyfriends.

The biggest problem I have with this book is the ending. Big massive upheaval near page 130/140, still lacking confirmation on Daryl's status and intent but, boom everyone shows up, everything is forgiven and forgotten and that's all she wrote. Billie deserves better. Billie deserves more. I believe each planned book in this series is a different FMC but honestly a book 2 for pack Apollo would not be amiss.

Yikes! Rushed plot lines and abrupt ending. Got to the last page and thought I was missing something.

Billie’s social media postings seemed like it would be a big plot line and then it was nothing. What the hell happened with Daryl and her mother? Billie’s run out of the pack by accusations (of what really????) and they just show up at her house and she was ok with everything. Then she forgives them at the drop of a hat?

Meh..

Very rushed, plot holes and too many things left unanswered..
And i really hate a doormat fmc Who lets people treat her like shit and then just says " ok I forgive you"..
the fact that 1 of them would bond with her and then just let her walk away, it kind of makes me think he's a piece of crap too...
Then they just walk in the door weeks later and say oops we were wrong... Without even explaining how they came to figure out they were wrong... fmc is just like OK .
Just didn't do it for me

3.5 starsThis book is a prime example that an ending can make or break a book. I enjoyed this book up to the last few chapters. The third act break up and reunión happened very quickly and the issues are not really addressed. The second to last sentence is literally, "Better," I tell him stretching, saving the hard conversations for later.

No Grovel

Let me start off by saying I really enjoyed 80% of this book. The last part with them turning on her and then coming back together was rushed to say the very least. There was no explanation, no closure of the issue that made their relationship implode and then boom back together. The FMC says there WILL BE major groveling in the future but you don’t see it whatsoever. It left like there was supposed to be a part 2. What I think this story could really benefit from is having the break up be the cliff hanger and have a part 2 book. One where we figure out the whole Maureen and Daryl thing and actually see the pack redeem themselves. And it also gives you more time to flesh out the drama and give some actual reasoning behind everything. Also getting her fired and we’re just going to brush over it?! Screams

I gave this book 4 stars because I think the majority of the book is great and with some reworking it could be amazing!

The ending ruined it for me.

I was enjoying the story for the most part and felt that the first change or acceptance was a bit quick after being so adamant to avoiding a pack relationship. It was a clue how easily she gave up her convictions. The angsty third act break up was spelled out clearly & too similar to a previous betrayal to feel believable.
But, ok, these smart successful men couldn't question a photo? Not one out of five felt even a tentative need to support her? Here a bond might as well be a hickey with the nothing she got from him.
Regardless, all was forgiven in five minutes , after weeks of misery, with intention to accept groveling in a future that I'm guessing the reader is supposed to imagine on their own.
Seems the author was tired of these people & wanted to be done with them. What a let down.

TL;DR
If you aren't interested in the details but just want some general thoughts, full review will follow below.
Did I read the entire book? Yes.
Did I enjoy the book? For what it was at 165 pages, mostly.
Do I plan to read the other pack books? Yes.

Riddled with plot holes, unfinished business and grammar/spelling errors or sentences that don't read correctly, the writing style itself is easy to get through leaving this book to be a quick read. I judge books under 250 pages significantly easier keeping in mind the shorter word counts and limited page space.

Full Review

Pack Apollo by Brandy Slaven follows our FMC Billie through a few short months of her life at North Five University. Keeping in mind the short 165 page book it was filled with many different plot aspects and conflicts that remain unanswered making me wish this book was another 100 pages longer so we could get a full scope of the plot and relationships within.

With an easy enough to read writing style it was difficult to move past some of the grammatical and spelling errors as they came up. There were multiple times where misuse of words had me reading a sentence 5 or 6 times just to make sure I wasn't crazy and realizing that it didn't make sense and rewriting the sentence the way the author clearly meant it to read in my head.

Let's Talk Logistics
some spoilers below but will be hidden
- The Quick Turn About; With how short the book is I can forgive most of the quick turning points of everything within the book. However I do think this book would have been more fulfilling to read given an additional 50-100 pages so that the plot could actually build.

- 0 Relationship Building; There was no actual build up to the relationship, it was very insta-love/lust in most aspects of it and while yes, there was mention of liking the scents of the men that she was around, there wasn't enough build on this to excuse the way things eventually turned out within the book.

- Plot Holes & Unfinished Business; Generally I can forgive a few plot holes at the end of a book pending the satisfaction gained from the finished plot lines... but there was only a single 'finished' plot line within this book, if you could even call it that.

Final Thoughts
If you are looking for just a quick read within the omegaverse then I would say go ahead and pick up the book to give it a shot. It's certainly rough around the edges in the plot and editing but I could see this as a good palette cleanser going into your future reads.

I plan on giving Book 2 within the North Five University a shot and seeing how I feel from there. I know it's significantly longer at 416 pages so I am hoping that fixes some of the issues I had within this book.

I hope those that choose to read this book love it, and happy reading!

Billie is in college and purposely does NOT want a pack. Her reasoning: her dad and his pack walked out on her mom when she found out she was pregnant. Instead, Billie wants to focus on her studies. Of course she meets a couple of guys who end up being AMAZING and *wouldn't you know* are also in a pack together (along with 3 others). So she agrees to hang out...as friends...

Some of the guys were just adorable but Roz...ugh. That whole thing was just annoying. Actually, the most annoying thing was her mom. She was really the reason I only gave 4 stars (that and I felt like there could've been more groveling). Otherwise it was cute.

Just not there

I really wanted to like this book.

I loved Brandy's White Trash Trilogy (and spin offs) but this book was just meh.

I didn't really feel a connection with any of the guys and Billie. I couldn't tell you which one was an Alpha or a beta.

I felt that there were two big issues in the book.

1) the job offered for the bar that was jakes?? I think.
2) daryll bring her possible father.

We don't get closure about either of these.

It's like the book wasn't finished. Or parts were deleted.

I did not get any endorphins reading this book. I felt more irritated and upset than anything.

Great Quick Read

This was a fast omegaverse read, and I really did love it.

Billie has a heartbreaking backstory that’s a clear picture of how parents pass on their bitterness and cause trauma in their children. My heart broke for her while she carried the sins of her mother.

I loved her pack which came with their own guarded walls. While some were an instant attraction, others were weary. It made the story have a bit more depth despite how short a read it was.

Worse ending

Was a pretty good book till it just ended without answers in the middle of the daddy issues and just jumped into the pack with no resolve of problems with trust. So disappointing

I wanted to love this — but it was terrible.

Also editing to add: this book was pushed a minimum of 3 times for release, and it was still a dumpster fire.

First off, Bravo to JODIELOCKS Design for creating beautiful covers that really pull you in.

Although the cover is great, the content inside is not.

163 pages. That’s it. And it’s a disaster. You couldn’t bother to edit or even use Google to spell correctly for a 163 page book?

This book is a disgrace to omegaverse books everywhere. I will try and continue the series to see if JJ Dean is as disgraceful and sloppy as Brandy Slaven.

Spelling errors aside…

• We don’t find out Jake is a beta until 67% into the book. Which is page 107/163.

• Billie’s Omega friend Millie-Jane’s name changes to Millie-Jean. (Clearly not a single editor read this trash.)

• Page 144/163 they have a 3rd act breakup and then 3 pages later (147) they want to get back with her and “grovel”

• No on page groveling at all.

• Professor Carver to Professor Brent? Yes I know his name is Brent Carver but the random switch up was odd.

• There’s a dog named Sherlock mentioned briefly as a “huge fluff of yellow” then a few pages later referred to as “orange floof” Ma’am, what color is the f^cking dog?

• Misspells Hummus multiple times. She got it right at first then changed it to “Humus”

• Uses “Ms” instead of “Miss”
- example: “Can I help you, Ms?”

• “five foot eleven or twelve” you mean five foot eleven or six feet? Five twelve is not a thing.

The cover is so gorgeous I had such high hopes. This book was terrible and if I could rate it lower than 1 star, I would.

Would not recommend.

I was really looking forward to this one and was afraid it wasn’t coming when the release date changed.

Billie is an omega who is determined to be independent and make her own decisions. She doesn’t want a pack because she thinks they won’t let her be herself and make her own decisions (part of that is thanks to her mom who has filled her head with how bad alphas are). Pack Apollo has had their own struggle with omegas that have stabbed them in the back so they aren’t really looking for an omega when Billie enters their lives.

Like I feel with most shorter, almost novella length, stories I wanted so much more. I’m so used to the insane world building of some authors that it takes me a minute to adjust. That being said this one was such an easy read. I started it after bedtime and was able to finish it in one sitting because it really did draw me in. I think if it had been longer so they could’ve explored some plot points a little more & kind of tied everything up better at the end (more groveling) then this absolutely would’ve been a 5 star book for me.

*side note there are some grammatical & continuity errors (names of side characters changed part way through the book). The name changes were super close though Millie-jean & Millie Jane so I think it could’ve just been a typing error that wasn’t caught because I almost didn’t notice.

2 stars. Someone else’s review said it perfectly the book was meh. It had the promise but lacked good direction and execution.

I really liked the main character besides the fact that one of her main points was that she did not want a pack and pretty much the day after meeting the entire pack, she wants them. A girl who carries trauma over having a pack and was so dead set against a pack changes her mind so quickly without a lot of thought. I also hated the fact the she was so independent and very likely (minus the rolling over about a pack and the car) she did not make them grovel at all. She forgave them to easily. She went from a character that I admired (if I ignored her too quick of a change of heart) to one I hated.

Also the ending was super rushed. It felt unfinished. I honestly thought and checked if there was supposed to be another book. Also didn’t really enjoy the sex scenes because I didn’t feel a big connection between all the main characters.

* As I was writing this review my rating went from 2.5 stars to 2 stars because I realized the only thing I truly enjoyed about the book was the main character and her independence. I also thought I liked her attitude but as I was typing I realized started to ignore certain things said and done to try and enjoy the book and because what was actually in the book wasn’t that fun or enjoyable.

Questions not answered

I’m usually not the type to write reviews because I would hate to hurt anyone’s feelings. But this book left me with questions.

Overall the book is okay has some spice but nothing too crazy. The character development was kind of missing but you can’t really expect much from a book that’s only 100 something pages. But you really didn’t get to see the pack in their natural element. You know what their jobs are but you don’t read any more details about it. The POVs were a bit choppy when it comes the men of the pack. Both sides have trauma to work through but you don’t really see it. Billie just forgives them so easily. You say that your heart is so so broken but you just get over it too fast. Then you bring in her mom. Why is her mom so against her getting with a pack if she was the one that turned her back on them? Why didn’t she help more through her daughter’s heat? What is the relationship with Billie’s father like now? Does she end up changing degrees?

I was thinking that all the books would kind of have a crossover but looking at some of the other reviews there isn’t. I was kind of hard to get through this one. I can’t imagine trying to do that with all the others. I also feel like this book was not finished and was kind of rushed.

But please correct me if I’m wrong about the crossover.

Disappointed in this one :( the premise is good, and you can tell the author has the talent and a good voice/handle of the characters, but it was entirely too rushed. We were supposed to believe this heroine was focused on school and I was so interested in her job as a faceless creator online, but we never get more than just brief mentions and it felt dismissive. And then the relationship was so rushed it wasn't believable. The ending also was just too predictable and eye-rolling because the big conflict wasn't even a big deal and dealt with in three pages. And then the book just ends. Awkwardly and left me turning the page, confused at how that was it??

The formatting (which I know isn't the most important part of the book and I could ignore a few issues here and there) was pretty bad. Dropped quotations, page breaks in the middle of a chapter where the new chapter started, dropped words and spelling errors, etc. It got really distracting, taking me out of the book a few times.

Nothing in the book got resolved. We are left with a lot of unanswered questions and I'm just confused lol and sad because I was so looking forward to it.

Billie has taken care of her mom most of her life. Abandoned by her Pack when she got pregnant, Billie's mom has been broken ever since. They have scraped by, but just. More than anything, Billie wants stability and security. Now Billie has a chance at a better life. She's been accepted into North Five University and has a job bartending and dancing. Even better her social media is really taking off. She's not looking for a Pack but one finds her. It wouldn't hurt to be friends, would it?

This is not a bad book but it could have been much better. It's rushed. It's too short. And it's incomplete. There are errors, the character depth isn't what I'm used to with this author, and the lack of an ending is frustrating. I'm not sure why you start a new storyline in the latter part of a book and then leave it hanging unless you plan to expand the book at a later date. If that's the case, which I don't believe it is, write a note after the final page. Having said this, it's an easy, light read. It had good bones. Add some more depth and a whole lot of groveling, maybe a shopping trip and some pampering, and it would have been even better.

Unfinished

Where this leaves off isn't really a resolution to the conflict of the story. Readers are left with so many questions, unresolved feelings, and anger at the pack. A heat isn't a HEA. They did not grovel. They barely apologized. The betas and 1 alpha are the only redeeming ones of the pack. Two of the alphas, well, 1 really but the other doesn't allow him down any at all, act like butts. She hides info from them. They hide info from her. The miscommunication trope is heavily, heavily, used here and in an almost tortured manner to twist it out. Her family situation is never resolved. She barely knows what an omega deserves, so in a way they're taking advantage of her heat and naivety. It leaves a bad taste. Her barely made friend tells her more about things than the pack that's supposed to protect and treasure her. And the next book starts over with a whole new pack. So we don't get that cathartic HEA, either.
The 2 stars are because I enjoyed her independence, fierce spirit, and taking care of- even defending- her mother even through her alcoholism and belligerence.

It was a fast read. First off, I've been curious about this series all year because the covers keep popping up on my Kindle, but I never really looked at it. It is a bit confusing if you want to read it in order because the series is written by 2 authors and the series isn't linked. Like, if you go to the series page, one author shows 2, 4, and the upcoming 6, but then the other author, you have to go to the author page to find her 3. So, it is a little confusing. But it's a series of standalones, and I think overall, other than the location, they're not really linked. I think. I think it could be more like 2 separate series linked by a world, because we meet the main characters from books 3 and 4 in books 1 and 2, but the characters from 1 and 2 don't overlap. Anyway, as for the book itself, it was alright. It's a fast omegaverse. It wasn't bad. I just think the steam took over, and I wish we had more focus on the suspense because it was interesting, just wrapped up too fast in the end. But I want to give book 2 a try before deciding to stop the series or continue because it's by the other author in this series.

I'm not sure how to write this review without sounding awful, so please don't hate me.
I'm not a fan of the "novella lenght", in my opinion the charachters never fully develop their potential, BUT I knew that before downloading the book, so my mindset was cool with it, and in all honesty I was so curious about this new interconnected series.
In the end, the lenght of the book wasn't even that bad, the last 10% of the story was my real problem. During the reading, the MMCs were "blurry" and superficial, at some point I've got the feeling that it was most important the number of males (5) than giving them depth and personality. And, like I wrote, the last chapters of the book were simply not good. The last chapter in particular left me so disappointed, rushed and I felt like it was abruptly cut.
I'm going to read the other books? Yes, I think the author has potential, I just hope to read something more and better.

Up until the final third of the book, this was an easy four-star read for me. But it was like the author decided to smoosh everything into the final few chapters and it’s a rushed third act break up, the break up doesn’t even make sense, it basically makes it seem like who cares if we’ve bonded you we can drop you like a dime… And then it’s like oh they’ve shown up. I’m gonna forgive them… Know what the heck happened here.
Not only that, but the social media aspect felt like it was a big part of who she was and we just let that go because I got fired, that doesn’t make sense. What about the father situation? Like, mom hopped out of bed to see Darrell, but there’s no resolve with that part of the story and she couldn’t be bothered to answer questions but as soon as his name is brought up and he’s in the house no problem I’m falling into his arms. I don’t know what happened at the end of this book, but it felt like the author gave up.

Wattpad Level Writing

I try not to be super judgmental but I honestly don’t think this novel was edited even once. Overlooking the annoying mistakes like they described one of the guy’s scents as “savory fruit loops” or another’s height as “Couldn’t be taller than 5’11” or more.” (so… he could be taller than 5’11” so how tall is he??). There is little to no commitment to who the author explicitly tells us the characters are. The main character is supposed to be a tough person who is alone by choice, and yet from one question dumps her entire life story and agrees to dating. After she literally states she has no time for dating not five sentences before. It really is such a shame because this book had a good premise that is overshadowed by the truly bad editing and characterization. People who want to read this should just go over to Wattpad and get the same quality of writing for free.

Reads like a first draft

Lots of typos and missing words. Multiple characters names are changed throughout the story. The little omega friend changes between Millie-Jane and Millie-Jean and back again several times. The guys ex goes from Shelly to Shelby. The ending is so abrupt. Someone else said that it gave them whiplash and I would have to agree. One of the guys isn’t even introduced as a beta, you’re left to figure that out at about 75% on your own. Five foot twelve is not a thing my friend. Normal people call that six feet. The premise was interesting and it had a lot of potential, but it really needs a lot of polishing and an actual ending.

mega *sigh*

This is not the first book by this author that I have read and even liked. I also fully enjoyed about 80% of this book. The ending really pissed me off, though. Forcing a heat to reconcile relationships and solve issues is honestly lazy writing. I was just so disappointed with the ending of the this book. Not even just the heat thing, but it just ended super abruptly and ftr a nest is bare minimum. We should have had some groveling and all the losses ends tied and maybe even an epilogue. It’s almost like she just got bored and decided to just be done with this pack.

No Grovel & Abrupt Ending

I feel like the author was definitely rushing at the end of this book. There’s no grovel, no talking about what happened, why, and apologies. Just oh I’m in heat we’ll work it out after.
Everything the FMC worked for, and trying to be independent was whipped away when she just let the rest of the pack bond with her.
Grovel needed to be done on page, even if you let them have the heat with her. They kicked her out, her bonded alpha didn’t fight for her, and they let it go on for weeks.

Besides that, this books needs another round of editing. There were mistakes and wrong grammar and just weird cut off sentences.

I really enjoyed this Omegaverse. I especially loved how it was all focused on the h. Although I don't mind some mm I feel like lately so many Omegaverses I have read have had a Male omega and it seemed the story pretty muched focused on the male relationships only & the female h seemed to be forgotten or side character even the blurb focused & was about her and how she found a pack.

So, I was really happy to finally read a Omegaverse again that truly felt like a RH. Plus the plot & characters were all done well and by the end the story left a huge smile on my face. I am definitely moving to the next one in this new series.

So close

Ugh.. I am that person that loves every book I read usually. I got to page 161 and was hoping for an epilogue because surely after 2 pages of her saying they needed to grovel, she wouldn’t let it go… but yep. She ends with them saying…they need to grovel. That just isn’t good enough for me. Sorry! 😫 I hate that I can’t get over it. I really liked the story, but the pack truly did her dirty imo, and after all the build up and courtship the ending was just not enough. So if you’re like me and need to see that the hurt was resolved, not just her saying they’ll do it, you may want to be ready for frustration.

Rushed storyline

I found this book disappointing.
Failed to really highlight designations of the characters and put in as an afterthought. Barely scratches the surface of being an omegaverse book; while each author tends to have their own spin on how they portray this within their writing, these elements added nothing to the story or the characters. Kind of feels like it’s wanting to jump on the trend of omegaverse without putting in any effort.
I don’t mind short stories at all, but this story was completely rushed, timelines are skipped over and feels like important details are heavily missed.
