Not for the Faint of Heart - Tale of the Waning Moon Vol 2

Okay, so the bookstore finally stocked the second volume of this series, so this was the real no-brainer, as the first volume was definitely my favorite yaoi or BL manga that I have read so far, and the second volume continues in the same glorious tradition. And, with the whole forced love angle dropped from the first volume, the series is free now to revel in some more healthy, and still adorable, relationships. So onward into the review, thanks to a good read on Sunday and a small glass of brandy and schnapps (which is fast becoming the drink of choice for these reviews).

So the story, now that the main character has decided that he does rather like the moon spirit that raped him (ah, yaoi, why?), moves from him outright fighting against the direction his life and love are taking him and moves him into the throbbing meat of the quest, which is to open a door that will take him to the moon where he and Ixto can be together. It is the standard fantasy/video game troupe, with the door only opening when the person wanting to get through possesses a certain list of items, each of which has their own quest to get through. This with a little teasing of a different, and slightly evil(?), moon spirit, and the party is ready for adventure. It's not really the most complex of plots, but the series still plays off of the video game cliches, with the hilarious addition of the hint clan, and so it really works.

The first of these little adventures is rather forgettable in its content, though it brings back some characters from the first volume and complicates them a little, and it is possible that these people will show up again, but really it just serves to be some silly fun and to show these characters working together and having a good time. The relationship between Aldin and Ral is starting to grow, but slowly, with small indications that there is something weird going on with Jii, Aldin's servant. Otherwise, the main thrust (teehee) of the plot is aimed at showing how Ryuka is slowly coming around (teeheehee) to accepting his feelings for Ixto. That aspect of the story is good, and the relationship continues to be sweet and hilarious, and with this volume I can start to overlook more the whole rape thing that started off their romance.

The second story is what really points at more of a plot, with the party visiting Aldin's home in hopes of borrowing one of the needed items from his family. There is a lot that has been hinted about what's going on with Aldin and Ral, and the plot only thickens when Aldin returns home, with the volume ending (kind of) on a cliffhanger. The volume includes again an extra scene, which is again cute and fun and funny, so that is nice, and things are really moving along, so I am very excited that the third volume is coming out soon.

I suppose I should mention that this book tones down the sexuality a bit, though it still retains a bit of steam (oh my). The author mentions this in the back of the volume and I have to agree, though really it doesn't keep the book from being extremely enjoyable, light, cute, and sexy. The art is amazing and the author promises a return to some heavier...uh...materials in the next volume, so look forward to it. I can't really recommend this more, with the nagging caveat that I would have liked if the relationship were not based on rape. Still, with all said and done, this volume still gets an 8.5/10.

This one drops some of the creepiness from the first volume, but it also drops a lot of the humor and becomes less of a parody of video games and just reproduces the same tropes. Ixto and Ryuka still don't know much about one another, and I don't see why we should want them to be together.

So we find Ryuka and company on the road to the moon, where Ixto-the Last Quarter Moon Spirit-is eagerly awaiting Ryuka's arrival. Of course this road is paved with obstacles-or more like comical misadventures-that make the journey a little bumpy along the way.

The first comes in the form of a cave that they must enter as within it's depths lies the 'Door to the Moon', which is the only way to get there. But warnings of young men-like Ryuka and Aldin-disappearing and never seen again make the group wary of going in.

Once inside, they're suprised to discover another Moon Spirit-Widow-who seems to have a bone to pick with Ixto; yet the story there isn't revealed quite just yet. Aldin however discovers something about Ral's curse. As it turns out he himself is under a spell and Widow hints 'That which has been cast on you and the horse cannot be undone on the moon' and in a contradictory move he wants to bargain with Aldin saying that it isn't impossible but that if he lays with him in front of Ral he'll do it--of course Widow gets turned down. With no way of keeping them as pets for his pleasure-due to both being spelled-Widow lets them go.

Finally able to get to the door, the group realizes it's not so simple as the door is chained and there are a set of particular items they must acquire in order to get through. One of the items is already at hand (some of poor Coon's tail hair), another is in Aldin's family's possession (Breath of the Fire Dragon) and the rest they have to seek out (One platter of burning wind, one sprig of peach pearls, and a sack of seven colored balls).

A helping hand reveals another of the articles (the sprig of peach pearls), but the owner makes a deal that brings the group into contact with the twin nemesis, Kapel & Qwen (see vol. 1). It's a close call for Ryuka and Al who have to use their manly wiles on them to grab the eye patches the twins wear; but Ixto, using Cymric w/Coon's assist rescue the guys.

With another item in their grasp they head out to Aldin's home to request the Breath of the Fire Dragon from Aldin's father and while Ryuka is a little taken aback by the obvious love they have for Aldin, he finds himself the object of displeasure of one of Al's older brothers, Mashura, who appears to hate him on sight. It's here that we are left with a major cliffhanger; Mashura, with the excuse of walking out Ryuka so that Al can spend time with his parents, kicks him out and claims that Ryuka will not be allowed inside again!

This was a nice and fun follow up; there's some progress with Ryuka's feelings and his journey. Aldin, now that he's learned a little more about Ral's & his curse might be on the verge of discovering who is behind it all and why. Coon-my fave character, provided some cuteness (his adult form is very sexy) and Ixto was being his sexy helpful self. There's a side story of a pair of minor characters (hopefully that story continues as well) as well as 2 extra short stories of Ryuka and Co.: Tale of the Moonlit Night 1 & 2 with the guys doing cosplay. ;)

Ryuka has gathered a small band of fellow travelers in his quest. But he’s growing ever more confused about whether he wants Ixto or not. His bewilderment is endearing, showing his gradual weakening to Ixto’s influence (even though he denies his feelings at every opportunity). New dangers and thrills await him and his companions. Sometimes the action seems contrived. When Ryuka is looking for a sprig of peach pearls, he agrees to a needless bargain rather than hunt down and buy the hair ornament. Why?!

So, although I never get the sense that Ryuka is in any real danger, I found myself amused by his efforts. Sexual content is shown but the emptiness of it is boldly juxtaposed with tenderness exchanged among the main characters. As in any true yaoi romance, there’s a clear difference between mere screwing and lovemaking.
