Started off well, but then veered off track

Even though this was an erotic romance, the story had an intriguing and well written plot: a woman is plagued by a phantom lover which leads her to discover a previously unknown twin sister and finally, to confront the phantom lover.

The sex scenes were hot and interesting, yet the best part of the story was the plot. The characters were well written and interesting, particularly Annalise. I was drawn into Annalise's reactions, her thoughts and worries about what she was going through. The author could have very easily just focused on Annalise enjoying the sex, yet instead, we saw a very realistic reaction - enjoyment, yes, but also fear, confusion, worry. I found myself caring and being drawn into the story, wondering what would happen next.

I loved the story and enjoyed it until I got to the final chapter. I will try and explain without revealing any spoilers. The ending was confusing and incomplete. Throughout the book, Annalise mentioned wanting to meet her sister as well as the phantom lover, constantly thinking about it. Her sister was made a big part of the plot...and then completely ignored in the end. And even when she did meet her phantom lover, it felt incomplete. When I reached the end, I thought that part of the book must be missing. After having spent my time reading such a well written story with a great plot, to have the book end that way was upsetting and is the main reason why I gave this 3 stars instead of 4 or 5.

Phantom Lover

Echoed Embrace is an unique read comprised of a plot line I’ve never come across. It involves twin sisters separated at a very young age and individually adopted, both grow up not knowing each exits.

Annalise Montgomery never dreamed she had a twin, until a series of unexplained incidents happen to her. The first time is in the middle of the campus quad when she doubles over with pain as a stabbing pain plunges within her core and groping hands rub all over her body. These random incidents continue with an intense arousal and pleasure. And though a virgin, she can’t deny the intense sensations and orgasms drawn for her body is like making love to her. Who could this phantom lover be?
One day she collapses into an unexplained coma, and after several days with her parents seeking an answer, the local TV station gets a hold of the story. From results of the media exposure, her phantom lover comes to visit with the realization that Annalise is his wife’s twin. As the story unfolds, its revealed that her twin was in a car accident at the same time, and in a coma.

Echoed Embrace is a very short story, pacing is steady and chocked full of sexual imagination, because really, there isn’t any real sex until the end. And its pretty wild. There are some loose ends from this story, like how her mother knew about the campus incident, and how did her phantom lover able to have imaginary sex with Annalise without being intimate with Chloe, her sister? I was hoping for a sequel to explain all this, and that Annalise and her lover could embark on a new life together.

FANTASTIC!!

Ann Ruby has a real talent for writing about difficult and disturbing subject matter with compassion and grace. The 'phantom lover' may be a fantasy for some, but to live life never knowing where or when it will happen would be a very uncomfortable reality.

This is the situation that Annalise finds herself in. From mysteriously losing her virginity while walking across her university campus (while fully clothed!) to learning that her phantom lover was in fact her twin sister's husband. And then she decides to confront the man in the flesh and everything changes. A great read that I highly recommend.
