Rule number Don’t leave a writing deadline until the last minute
She’s written 69 spicy scenes, and now has a severe case of writer’s block. What’s a romance writer to do? Get away on a writing retreat and try out an old typewriter she found in the cabin she’s renting, of course.
But the caps lock key is stuck, and all she gets are capital letters.
Letters that aren’t content to stay on the page.
My Date With Caps Lock is part of The Sentient Object Calendar Series, a shared series curated by some of your favorite off-the-wall Biblio Barbie, Dakota Cockaday, Holly Wilde, Luna Cantrip, Nicole Parker, Sylvia Morrow, Thea Masen, Unfortunate Reads, and Vera Valentine. It’s meant for readers 18 and over who are ready to embrace a deeper experience with some unusual holidays.
Today in monster romance: a writer struggling to finish her next book finds herself pounding out letters on an old typewriter...only for the letters to come to life and do some pounding of their own.
(Sorry. Couldn't resist. I'm valiantly resisting putting this entire review in ALL CAPS, though, so there's that.)
Against my better judgement I'm still deep in the weirder parts of Kindle Unlimited, but this made for a delightful palate cleanser...of a sort. It is still utterly bonkers (guys, the entire alphabet comes out to play; you have been warned) and to an extent reminiscent of My Date with an Ampersand, but it's really playful and lighthearted. In particular, I love the writerly "rules" at the beginning of each chapter...rules that are immediately broken, of course.
Do I recommend this? I mean. Jein? When you're in a weird and raunchy reading mood, sure. It's weird (and not for the faint of heart), but that's what I'm here for!
An ode' to authors and spicy scenes but with a twist! Amazing, Beautiful, Creative, Delicious, Enticing... I could go on and on all the way to Z. Speaking of Z, they could get it. A fun short story with heat and humor to boot!
When I joined Thea’s team, I thought I knew what to expect. Great writing and books, that’s a given. Sentient objects? Holdup— *insert me doing a double take* 🤣🤣🤣
From a rubber duckie, to a car shifter and now sentient letters from a typewriter? Sure, why not! This was definitely a fun and silly shortie. Our FMC is having a blasted writer’s block when it comes to writing her 70th sexy scene (oh no!) and the last thing she expected was to be handled by the keys from an old typewriter. Literally. In all ways. The writing rules were perfect and gave the book a great touch, because the chapter that followed each one was about breaking the said rules.
Oh Thea, you are a wonder 😂💜
This is perfect as a palate cleanser, light and short.
2.75⭐️ Listen, when I picked this up, I wasn’t expecting too much—I was expecting absolute, unhinged ridiculousness, and Thea Masen delivered. This is what happens when you take writer’s block, mix it with an existential crisis, and throw in a sentient alphabet with very hands-on methods of inspiration. And honestly? I respect it.
Our FMC is the most relatable kind of hot mess—holed up in a cabin, drowning in coffee and procrastination, and fighting for her life against the cruel mistress known as the blank page. But then, in a twist that should not work but somehow does, her caps lock key breaks reality, and suddenly, she’s in a full-blown fever dream with floating letters who have only one goal: to make sure she never struggles with writer’s block again.
Was the plot absurd? Absolutely. Did I question my life choices while reading? Maybe a little. But did I have fun? Oh, you bet. This is the literary equivalent of eating an entire cake at 2 a.m.—no regrets, just vibes.
That said, it’s too short. Like, blink and it’s over short. Just when the story really starts getting interesting—BOOM, it’s done, and I was left staring at the last page like a Word document that crashed before I hit save. I wanted more—more weirdness, more shenanigans, and way more of Caps Lock in all his sentient, sexy linguistic glory.
Overall? 3 stars for sheer audacity and commitment to the bit.
yall this felt like the best acid trip🤣 Ever since I heard Thea was coming out with this book for the Sentient Object Holiday Romance series and knew I was getting an ARC for it I was mulling in my head over the logistics of how she was planning on making this work. Would it be that every time the fmc hit the capslock key the typewriter would... arrive? Or would it be when the fmc hit the capslock key a man would emerge from the typewriter and give in to her every fantasy? I seriously have been debating this for ages in my mind but good lord I never would've guessed that capital letters would emerge from this typewriter and please the FMC in every way she needed to get the inspiration flowing...or something else flowing🤭 This was wild seriously. Who knew I'd end up having a crush on the letter F? Okay seriously though this was hot and weird and I lowkey adored it. Thea actually blew it out of the water with this one. She was so clever with letters and what their lines would be based on the letter they represent. It was so impressive. Not to mention the ways in which she made these letters.. unique shapes work🤭 This was just so fun and all the writing rules were so hilarious as Thea pretty much broke all of them in the best ways! She is genuinely so talented and this proved that in a very interesting way🤣 Short and spicy and oh so weird. I loved it. This was so fun
Man, I feel odd rating this so highly given that this is honestly the weirdest thing I've ever read in my life. And I know I've said that before about this series, but I was wrong. This is it. I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't for our FMC to find herself getting rubbed up all ways by what felt alarmingly like the alphablocks - they even start each sentence with their appropriate letter sound. Giant capital letters, people, giant capital letters. But it was an enjoyable bit of pwp! I loved the chapter titles and how self aware it was. The letters just wanted her to do her best, and that's sweet. I don't know what I was expecting from a caps lock sentient object romance, but this wasn't it, and fair play to Masen for coming up with something as out there as they did!
I really enjoyed this story. I thought it was both funny and unexpected. I have to admit that I didn’t know what to expect from the use of caps lock, but I wasn’t disappointed by Thea Masen’s creativity.
I found the dichotomy between the writing rules and the content of the chapters very funny. I’m also a fan of chapter 4 and its clever use of letters at the beginning of sentences—I try to be vague so as not to spoil it.
As someone who loves the colour teal and dreams of owning a typewriter, if I see one in that colour one day, I won’t be able to help but wonder 😂
I have definitely not been disappointed by a single book in The Sentient Object Holiday series and I can’t wait to discover the next one.
An unexpected love story between a writer and the alphabet. No, really, that's what it is. The FMC has written 69 sex scenes but now has writer's block. Will an old typewriter bring her inspiration?
It was an absolutely insane little read, but so much fun. I laughed out loud several times over it's less than 50 pages. Another fun time brought to us by Thea.
Thanks to Thea for an eARC of this novella for an honest review!
What better way to overcome writer's block than getting it on with all the letters of the alphabet?! Can't think of one yeah me neither. This is an amazing and fun "the smvt is the plot" novella in the Sentient Objects Holiday-Series. All of them unique in their own way, slightly weird and surprising. "My Date with Caps Lock" delivers about half an hour of pleasure with the alphabet and hits all the right spots 😏
Once again Thea knows how to cure READER’s BLOCK and cleanse my palate with a nice QUICKIE. With all the 26 LETTERS having a role to alleviate a WRITER’s BLOCK in this Sentient Object Holiday series. This MONSTROUS sentient object knows the right button to TYPE and TAB to get the words flowing again.
Thea I’m grateful for you and I love this series thanks smutty authors for all you do for us!!!
Chicka chicka boom boom, will there be enough room?
In this book - yes. Yes, there’s room for ALL the letters of the alphabet…😳
This was insane - but if you’re a fan of sentient object books then I do recommend this. The writing was quite good, and I loved that each letter started any sentence they said with their letter. Such a silly, humorous way to spend a short amount of time (this is under 50 pages, so you can easily knock it off in a single sitting).
Okay…this one was so strange but in a good way? Like off the wall but I couldn’t stop reading because I was so entertained. Letters literally come to life and they have a giant 0rgy. The way the letters use their shapes in said 0rgy was super creative. How does Thea come up with this? Read it. That’s all.
Some of the book in this set have been hit or miss . Again I did not read anything more than the title and went in blind to see how the author would do this . It's interesting and the author definitely gave some interesting visual descriptions . Not sure I will look at sesame Street letters the same way again
WHAT DID I READ? All the words. Every single letter. Read them with both my eyeballs. And here we are. I was so curious how this was going to play out, and was certainly left satisfied. Also, the world play and alliteration, extremely top notch. A fun fantastic read!
A writer struggling with a little bit of writers block what better way to help you out than the whole alphabet.. This was such a quick fun read and before I knew it I was at the end! I love this series of unusual holidays!
They say authors have a love for the written word, but this one definitely takes it a step further! What's the best way for our FMC to get over writers block? Get under it, apparently! It's short, spicy, a little weird, and a whole lot of fun!
4 stars! 🌟 I absolutely love Thea's writing! If she writes it, I will read it! This was a fun, quick read. A writer with writer's block and a special typewriter that.. helps her out 😉 My only complaint is I wish it was longer 😆
My Date With Caps Lock by Thea Masen is part of a shared world called The Sentient Object Holiday Series by various authors. This is a quick, smexy ready about a writer who has writers block and falls in love with a typewriter and the alphabet. Loved it. Fun, quick, great palate cleanser.
Why choose between any of 26 letters in the alphabet, only the capitals of course. I want to reread and see if all 26 were mentioned, but I’m fairly certain Thea probably made sure of that. Going in I had no idea how a date with caps lock was going to go and by the end of it I was kicking my feet giggling because Thea Masen is a genius.
Backstory is in the blurb, so make sure to read that first. (My only real critique) This is a short but extra steamy read. Not sure I'll ever be able to look at a typewriter quite the same ever again. Fluid and delicious. Great snack sized spicy treat.
Seriously though, this was great. I love how each letter started their sentences with their letter. Their actions were words starting with their letters. Thea Masen is a gem.
Wow that was a wild ride of a book and it was great! Not only was it super interesting following an author FMC with fun chapter headings, but then you through in a whole alphabet of pleasure (literally) 😂 I love how the love interest also changed and morphed to fit her needs!
