A brainy intergalactic beauty must save a backwater planet from annihilation by its most treacherous The 33rd-century titans of corporate greed who rule her world. . . .
Gloria VanDeen’s special brand of smarts, sexiness, and raw courage has won her a promotion within the Department of Extraterrestrial Affairs. For her first assignment, she’s been dispatched to the planet Sylvania on a voter registration drive. But Gloria knows the real score. Sylvania is an Unincorporated Imperial Territory with murky homesteading laws. Once Gloria “democratizes” the planet, her ex-husband, the Emperor himself, plans to pillage it for Fergusite—the priceless emerald crystals that have lured boomers for light-years.
With mining operations set to begin, Sylvania’s beleaguered populace are looking to Gloria to save their world. Of course, countermanding the Emperor’s wishes is treason to the highest degree. With the eyes of the galaxy on her, it’s up to Gloria to choose between saving her neck—and preventing a boomerang that could destroy the Empire forever. . . .
Didn't have the first one but these looked like they might be more standalonish than others. So far so good on that account and the story line isn't half bad either.
============== Probably didn't need to read the first but wouldn't have hurt either. Decent book and storyline but totally wasn't expecting as much casual sex and not at all there outfits. Didn't bother me but not sure I really need to read every 2-4 pages about how a blouse is all the way open or completely transparent or whatnot. It's not unreasonable for the way life is in whatever century they're in but just started to get repetitive.
Space Opera with much bare flesh and some very uninhibited characters. I enjoyed it.
The key to unlimited space travel is some way to provide superluminal travel and a ready source of energy. Fergusite provides one and Plasma generators provide the other.
Good, likable heroine and a wide supporting cast with effective villains.
The second of the Gloria VanDeen series. It was a pretty good story, the conflict on the planet involved was interesting enough. My biggest problem is that I'm not really loving Gloria as the main character. She's a little unbelievable to me.
Gloria Vandeen is a rising star at Dextra, the enforcing arm of the emperor. She is clever, adept in martial arts, and is the most desired woman in the galaxy. Her sex appeal has its own gravity, and she uses it often and with great effect.
I didn't read the first Gloria VanDeen of the series, and I have no desire to do so. I doubt it would have affected my opinions.
First of all, this is barely science fiction. Sure, there is space flight, plasma cutters, and Gloria's transparency-adjustable clothing, but it's just a sci-fi facade. It is a Western set during the Gold Rush, and the plot reflects that. The book calls it Fergusite, but it's gold. It's the 33rd century, and they are panning for it.
Maybe other people would enjoy this, but Gloria spends most of the book nearly nude or with her clothing 70% transparent. Many of the other women are similarly unattired. The men, however, oddly only wear regular clothes. I believe there was a missed opportunity to introduce futuristic male fashion with a transparent codpiece. Honestly, though, the repetitive description of Gloria's skimpy and tight clothes and her sexual beauty gets tiresome. I understand it's her character and power to be promiscuous and ooze sexual energy, but it wasn't for me.
This was a weird horny sci-fi book. Credit to the book cover, if Gloria were more naked, it would perfectly describe what you're in for.
Is this how Gloria grows as a person? Love how she got revenge for the murdered riverrats in such a way that it could never truly be traced back to her!
