From the world of Beautiful Creatures--a dangerous new tale of love and magic continues in the sequel to Dangerous Creatures.
Love is ten kinds a crazy, right? Let me put it to you this way: If you can get away, run. Don't walk. Because once you're exposed, you'll never get a Siren outta your head.
Some loves are cursed. Others are...dangerous. Especially the love between wannabe rocker and quarter Incubus, Wesley "Link" Lincoln, and Dark Caster, Siren, and bonafide bad girl, Ridley Duchannes.
But now Ridley is missing, and Link was with her-right up until she vanished. Determined to find her, Link reunites with his New York bandmates and the mysterious Lennox Gates, who wants Rid for himself. Together they travel to the deep south, find the crossroads where blues guitarist Robert Johnson made his deal with the devil, discover a menagerie of Casters locked in cages, and uncover an evil in New Orleans that threatens to destroy them all.
This time, love might not be enough.

Well, that was a bit...disappointing. The build up to the climax was great but there was so much left unanswered at the lab. The ending was terrible. If I’d known this would be such a pathetic cliffhanger, I never would have read these spin-offs! Ugh. Why can’t any authors just finish a series and let it be instead of constant add-ons?
WHAT THE FUCK? i can't believe this, after everything that Link did to be with Ridley this is how it ends?! I fucking need another book, and I need it as soon as possible
"You see, there are these remarkable things called books. They're full of pages and pages of words. Maybe you've heard of them. Or maybe not."
There is really enchanting about this book, this spin-off series (and Caster Chronicles, of course), that I constantly loved them after I've finished reading them. Even I noticed something is off, my mind has already (fabricated) a reason and an explanation for that. I don't know why. LOL.
I love this sequel. It weren't perfect or anything but I really enjoyed reading this book. From the plot to the characters, it was all good to me. Even I found the combination of magic and science is super surreal, I don't care as long as the story is making sense. Even there's no concrete explanation (though oftentimes, I really need an explanation. (I'm biased, I know)), I'm ok with it. Yes, the plot has gone crazy again. It's being ridiculous and not. But I found it intriguing rather than annoying because oh well, I want to know what will happen to the world again with all the crazies.
Dangerous Deception took me to deeper and darker parts of the Caster world. It explored what I don't know about that magical world. Its secrets and whatnots. It also filled the void about what happened after the Order has been changed. But most importantly, it showed me who exactly is Ridley Duchannes. And I did understand her well. And it hurts.
The excitement and dread is adding up on me now to know what will happen to Link and Ridley and their love story along the way. And what roles the new and old characters will play as the story progresses. Especially now that the new characters are all intriguing and felt like they are all up to something.
I wrote my review before I was fully finished reading this book but with each chapter I became more and more disappointed in Dangerous Deception and I had to rewrite my whole review. What I thought was going to be a three star read quickly dropped to a two star read and even now I’m wondering if I should lower my rating to one star… After how much I loved Dangerous Creatures, I was not expecting Dangerous Deception to flop this hard and there’s not even a third book so this series can’t redeem itself. I’m just so mad. I really read four long books, five novellas, then an average sized book to end it all with this mess of a book.
I accidentally read A Gatlin Wedding before reading this book so I knew what the big plot twist was. It made me dread reading this book. So much time throughout the Caster Chronicles and Dangerous Creatures was devoted to developing Ridley’s character. She’s a morally grey character and her character development was spectacular, but this book in a matter of minutes tossed all of her development out the window and ruined her character. I wish anything would’ve happened in this book besides the complete destruction of all the effort put into making Ridley who she was. I’m so frustrated with this book and I wish I could rewrite a large portion of this book to change it for the better.
This book had three points of view instead of two like the previous book in the series and it did not work well. It made the time and order of events in the story get messy. Link’s chapters were filled with action while Ridley’s and Nox’s weren’t filled with as much action. It felt like more time passed in Link’s chapters based on the amount of events in them but when it came down to it, they all magically came together in the end as if the three points of view took up the same amount of time. It didn’t make sense. It also didn’t help when a character went insane/psychotic and it caused me to lose track of the timeline even more.
I’m not saying this book was completely bad. I liked getting to spend more time with Link, Floyd, and Necro in Link’s chapters, but I don’t have many other positives for this book unfortunately.
This book was an okay read, it wasn't amazing but it wasn't horrible. I know I haven't been writing reviews lately or reading books and its because I was in a HUGE reading slump. One of the reasons is because I am taking classes and I am under a lot of pressure and another reason was maybe because I was avoiding this book. But even when I want to read, I always remember all the homework or tests that I have to study for. So that's why you haven't seen crazy updates from me. :)
I read the Caster Chronicles series and I thought that I really liked it. So I rated it 5 out of 5 stars, but then I realized that I never really enjoyed it. It put me through reading slumps and I felt like the story dragged. In order for you to read this series, you have to read the Caster Chronicles Series. And, this is the second book in the next series, that you read after the Caster Chronicles series. The first book is called Dangerous Creatures.
Although I didn't enjoy the Caster Chronicles, this series had my favorite characters from the Caster Chronicles. It had Link and Ridley and they are both my favorite! The first book was amazing and so interesting, but I didn't enjoy this installment to the series. I felt like the story dragged and when things started to get interesting, the book ended. The plot and storyline were really interesting and the writing style was amazing, but this book wasn't meant for me.
Every single time I read this, I felt bored and I wanted to grab another book. But I can't do that for some reason... If I start a book, all my attention goes to that one book in particular. I know it's weird but I'm weird... My friends think that when you don't like a book, just stop reading it and read something else. But I don't know why I can't do that. It's a simple thing but I can't manage to do it, so instead, I get into huge reading slumps.
I loved all the characters in this series, but the only problem was how much the story dragged. We learn more about the Caster World and Ridley. I grew frustrated by the end of the book because of all the things that happened. I felt bad for Link and Nox but I wish Nox wasn't so selfish and thought about others, other than himself.
If you enjoyed the Caster Chronicles series, I highly recommend this series. If you didn't enjoy the Caster Chronicles series, then you should still give this book a try because it is much better. And if you haven't heard about the Caster Chronicles series, you can read it if you want, but I don't recommend it....
P.S, I've been watching some shows lately because of my friends and I love them so much! I started watching Once Upon A Time but now I am waiting until the show ends so that all the episodes will be out. Once Upon A Time is amazing and it's something I love because it has fairy-tales and they all have a twist to them. I started watching Lost and now I am almost finished! I'm on Season 6 Episode 13 and I love all the characters and YOU NEED TO WATCH IT! And I started watching anime and I already finished two shows and I LOVE THEM BOTH! One is called My Little Monster and it's really funny. The other one is Ouron Highschool Host Club and I love this one as well. I am currently watching Polar Bear Cafe and I love this one as well. I haven't been watching or reading anything because of all these classes that I'm taking, but you guys should all watch these!
I swear I can see the light at the end of the tunnel guys. I'm free from this series and I'm so happy it was only 2.5 books. I can't contain all of my excitement right now. It's over. It's really over.
Okay, so Dangerous Deception was so freaking boring. I might be in the minority of this book but I swear to god people.. did we read the same book? There is no way that this should earn 5 stars - like, at all.
So Ridley gets captured in this book and is basically held hostage for the entire book. Color me shocked because the entire book is about her friends looking for her. THE ENTIRE BOOK PEOPLE. I don't even like Ridley that much to spend an entire book looking for her. Honestly, I didn't even care if they did find her or not. Just know.. that I would've ditched that search party real quick.
Besides not liking Ridley, I still don't like Link or Nox. Again, it didn't matter to me that Link and Ridley weren't together for more than half of the book. Also, the ending did nothing for me. I'm not shooked from it. I simply just didn't care for it. I kind of forced myself to finish off this series and I'm glad that it's finally over.
Plus it was really stupid, cliche, and predictable that the only person who could save Ridley from where ever she was.. well, was herself. Congrats Ridley you did it.. it just took you a whole book to figure it out though. Aside from Link and Ridley, Nox also annoyed me to no end. He was acting like a baby back bitch for most of the book. I just wanted to slap the shit out of him and tell him to man up.
Overall, I'm disappointed in this spin off series but that's mostly because I just didn't like the characters. I don't even know why I wanted to read them in the first place.. maybe I was hoping that they would change my opinion of them.. but it actually made me hate them a hell of lot more.
Sorry to everyone that actually liked this series - you guys are still winners in my book! Keep reading my friends <3
Everyone thinks Rick Riordan is the ultimate cliff-hanging troll:
But after the ending of Dangerous Creatures, I beg to differ.
TITLE GUESSAGES:
* Dangerous Darkness (obvious, but come on...) * Dangerous Love * Dangerous Light
All wrong. Love the actual title, though. And the cover - wow. Broken shades have never looked so cool.
REVIEW:
Well, well, G&S. Together, you've gotten the Caster Chronicles world back to form and then some. Between the much more international scope of this adventure (Ripping to Europe, anyone? Even if only for a short while...) and the crazy intensity of the Ridley storyline (at least we finally got that cliffhanger resolved!), this second Dangerous Creatures story was a short but sweet one.
Sweet...until the end, that is. I was warned by a fellow reader that the ending would be bad. She didn't tell me it would be sad. And sad it was. Not gonna lie - I teared up quite a lot. It's hard to say which of these two fine writer ladies, Garcia or Stohl, could be more responsible for this one. While not as lethal as the ending of Idols (for which I'm still not inclined to forgive Stohl anytime soon), or as devastating as the ending of Unmarked (oh God, don't remind me), it still continues their trend of giving me the feels something fierce.
Okay. Done talking. I'm gonna go hug my dog now. I need it. And then I'll wait for the inevitable third book - not to mention Stohl's Black Widow book, which I just found out about today. :D
Dangerous Deception by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl Published 2015, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers Stars: ★★★★☆ (3.5) Review also posted at: Slapdash & Sundry
3.5 stars
It's no secret to anyone that I really enjoyed the Beautiful Creatures series. While it wasn't anything groundbreaking or amazing, it was lots of fun and had a great concept and world. The Claiming, Light and Dark Casters, etc, all really entertained me. So you could color me excited when I found out that they were writing a follow-up series with Ridley and Link in the starring roles.
Dangerous Creatures, book one, was fast-paced and highly entertaining, though quite a bit different than the first series. Unfortunately, Dangerous Deception fell flat for me. I was really enjoying it until I hit the end, not even realizing it was the end until I turned a few pages and fell straight into samples from each of their solo books. It just felt unfinished... like a filler story. It moved the story along, sure, and introduced some radical new elements to the overall arc. I just wasn't left satisified with the plot -- it definitely couldn't have stood both on its own AND as a part of the series. It could only work as part of the series.
Because the introduced story elements were pretty awesome, I didn't drop my score completely... and I had lots of fun in the process, so I'm going to stick with my initial feeling of a 3.5 star rating.
I'll definitely finish the series, but I'm hoping book three will seriously up the ante.
I really enjoyed Dangerous Deception, but the only major thing I disliked about it was the ending, and that's because it wasn't what I was expecting.
I loved seeing the story progress through the perspectives of the different characters (those being Link, Nox and Ridley - usually in that order). It kind of reminded me of how TV shows tell their stories, except with less confusion as it is all one story arc and not multiple ones at once (I'm glaring at you, True Blood).
One of the things I really commend about the novel is that its not a copy of Beautiful Darkness, or a repeat of Dangerous Creatures, the story is completely fresh; at least something I've never personally read before. I only wish it were longer.
If you're a fan of Link, like me, then you will enjoy this book. If you're a fan of Nox, unlike me (I mean I like him but Link is my babe), then you will enjoy this book. However Ridley, despite having multiple chapters from her point of view, feels very absent from the story. Also, don't expect much Link/Ridley (do they even have a ship name?) action, because they spend 90% of the novel separated.
All in all, this is a really enjoyable story, and I'm looking forward to seeing the next installment of the Dangerous Creatures series (assuming there is a next installment... pretty please?)
Gah..this book was torture! Are there people out there who like Ridley? Cause I, for the life of me, can't find one redeeming quality about her. And all that just becomes more apparent in this installment.
She sold her effing boyfriend! Ok, I know that's old news and it happened in the first book, but I don't think that's something you come back from. So yeah, I carried that over into this one and when Ridley is kidnapped by evil Silas, I couldn't have cared less about what happens to her. But because this series really wants everyone to love her, the entire book focuses on trying to find her. That's literally all it is, everyone looking for her and Ridley getting experimented on.
I felt like the writing and the plot line were both just all over the place in this book. Nothing was solid and most everything seemed to rely heavily on previous works. Nothing new was learned, nothing new was gained and nothing really happened but a bunch of whining and complaining.
Oh yeah, and Ridley is a giant selfish bitch.
The ending was horrible, nothing was solved or even remotely concluded. So for this being an ending to this series, it seemed like the authors themselves couldn't even be bothered to actually come up with a decent ending and just stopped trying. I feel sorry for people who were actual huge fans of this series and wanted any sort of closing.
Yeah, and if this series was to get more people to root for Ridley - you failed...epically.
So Ridley was captured and being held hostage, while her friends looked for her. For the entire book. It was more like half a story, with a lot of arguing between the main characters. Not sure I will continue with the series.
I was so excited to read this book after finishing Dangerous Creatures and loving it. Sadly, it really fell short of my expectations. Something about the characters in this book got on my last nerve. Especially Link. I felt like everything Link said came out sounding stupid and I couldn't think of him as anything but an idiot. I felt like Ridley and Link's relationship was so fake in this book and I got so tired of hearing them go on and on about each other. The main reason I liked this book was because of John and Liv. I didn't realize how much I missed these characters until Liv would crack a sarcastic joke and I couldn't help but smile. I did like this book but it definitely had a lot of flaws and I hope this series gets a whole lot better.
This book was such an improvement over the first. Maybe because Ridley had such a small part in it? Loved the past character cameos and the plot was more interested and better fleshed out. I liked the ending in particular, although I'm sure the majority of people didn't, but . I'm glad this series is over, because honestly I'd never read two more books featuring these characters, but I'm happy I gave this book a shot since it was turned out better than I expected. The audiobook was great.
NONONONONOOOO NO NO NO!!!!!!! That is so NOT how you end the book!!!
RIDLEY YOU COME BACK HERE RIGHT NOW AND LET LINKY LOVE YOU....
OKay I think I should back up a bit now that I've lent out a little anger... The book on the whole was frankly quite good. The best part is that its story is not like The Beautiful Creatures (not that I dint like that book, which I frankly did and also shed some tears on). The story and the progression is completely different which is amazing seeing as the characters are so totally different.
This book is also not how I thought it would turn out to be which is probably why I finished it faster than I normally would have. I honestly thought that Link and Nox would reach Link sort of around the same time and one of them would see Rid with the other and experience another heartbreak and so on which made this better (though obviously I kept hoping Link would be the one who reached first)
Nox is a (excuse my language) stupid, self possesed, ass who needs to just get faaar faar away. SHE'S NOT YOURS LEAVE HER ALONE.NOW!!
NOw speaking of Rid. WOW! Good job Kami and marge cuz THAT is most definetly not something I had expected. Even though she's being a total bitch I'm kinda excited cuz now we get to see a true Siren (also a few other things) in all her glory.
For all Link lovers out there. I know how heartbreaking this book was. I feel for you but I'm sure that we'll get Ridlink(? if that's their ship name) back. Gotta keep hope
I'm just not impressed with this spinoff series. I don't think Garcia is writing with the same fun, captivating voice as in the Beautiful Creatures series, and her characters are so flat! I thought Ridley's thought process in this book was so scattered and boring, and the change of perspective was too slow and unconnected and made me feel disconnected from the books rather than intrigued. I hope she ends the series because the passion is totally gone.
What was that? No, I don’t think you understand me.
WHAT.WAS.THAT?
Horrible I would say.
I was really excited to read this one because the finale of the first book was so good, so this starts exactly where we left which was okay, I want to see more.
I don’t want this to take too long because I don’t think it deserves more of my time.
The entire book / plot is about trying to get Ridley, so that is not much of a big deal, but we’re halfway through and things aren’t changing, and about the first 65% of the book we’re still dealing of how are we going to get her? So by this point I was getting tired and it’s not even 300 pages but I swear to God it was a lot longer for me, therefore I wasn’t so much interested in the story anymore I was just trying to finish it sometimes.
We have some characters from the series which was cool but I didn’t care so much about them I don’t know if it’s because I don’t remember that well the series, or I just wanted to be over.
But at this point doesn’t seem so horrible but Ugh! The Finale! THAT.FREAKING.FINALE
I hate it, I hate it, one of the worst finales I’ve ever read just to give the basic points:
* We’re been having this relationship since the first book, and this is the finale of the finale a.k.a the sixth book, so for six books we have been building this couple up.
* This spin off series is about THEM not her cousin, not his sister, not new characters, not about the main characters years later NO! ABOUT THEM.
* The first four books are about them having this complicated relationship, so right now is finally the time we deserved for waiting this so long.
* Spoiler Alert* THEY DON’T END UP TOGETHER!
You would say is that that bad? I mean it wouldn’t be the first book to do so. The problem is that this “Nox” guy, we first see him in this series, we do not know him at all in the first books, therefore I don’t feel as much as attachment that we have with Link, and of course we don’t have this history /story with the new guy, just imagine this:
They finally have come to rescue her, they’re here, Link can’t wait to be with her, and she just goes there and says “I want to be with Nox, he’s the love of my life, the real one”, and she don’t have any kind of feelings towards Link anymore…. JUST . LIKE . THAT .
The amount of madness I had Uff! No idea, you have no idea!
And everybody was like 😵🙃🥴 and she was 😒🤨🙄 and Link still persuades her, like babe we can get through this we can find a solution, but she’s too distracted giving him the looks to Nox.
And by the really end they are really happy (Nox and Ridley), super excited they want to move to LA and live happily ever after. And just like that the book ends and with so many questionslike WTF?
WTF Ridley?? Are you serious? Did you just do that? Yes, yes you did. Not Cool, Not cool at all!!!
So I felt sorry for Ridley in the first Dangerous Creatures book and even in this second book until about the middle of the book. She seriously pissed me off especially at the end!!
I'm not the biggest fan of Link, but come on he is cute and adorable in his own way and he would do anything and I mean anything for Ridley no matter how crappy she treats him!!!
I enjoyed old characters popping up in this book and a couple of new ones came along. I especially enjoyed Sampson. I want more of him and to know more about him. I wouldn't mind him having his own book and I think him and Necro getting together!! And John and Liv are so cute together!!!
Floyd just annoyed me!! Nox, what the hell happened to you? Grow a pair, dude!!! You became a little bitch at the end.
And speaking of end, is this the last book in this series? Because that ending seemed like it could be open for a new book or it could just end the way it did??!!! If this is the ending of this series, then I want to downgrade my rating!! You can't end a book like that. It just didn't feel complete!!
I did not think that Ridley would have waited it out in the cell just to get more power and then throw away Link like a sack of potatoes. Yes, i know she is greedy and yes she is spoiled but still running away with nox and leavine link. It's like beautiful chaos all over again. Link tells Rid all of his feelings and she turns him away. I never liked Nox but this book just made me purely hate him.
This book ruined me so bad, I have shipped this certain ship for these 2 books and the other 4 in beautiful creatures series and then I started to ship a different ship in this book and they ended up together and I was happy but the ending killed me and it made me look at the whole series differently and now I don't think I can go back and read it and feel or think the same.
Rating: 1.5/5 ***Minor spoilers, spoilers for book 1***
After the Beater was rammed by a truck, Ridley has gone missing, and Link was found in the forest a bit away from the crash site. Later, Link and the rest of the group (Sam, Nox, Floyd, and Necro) discover that the truck in question belongs to Silas Ravenwood, who has almost certainly taken Ridley for experiments in one of his labs. Nox has had the location of the closest lab removed from his head, so Link thinks their best bet is asking John Breed, who was been experimented on by the Ravenwoods and may remember the location of the lab. Nox goes off on his own, using cash and favours in an attempt to get to Ridley first, since he thinks Link is useless. The remainder of the group go in search of John, so that they can find a way to get Ridley out of there.
I actually didn't really want to read this book. I read the first book and didn't like it all that much, but since I owned the second novel I figured I might as well read it. I didn't really enjoy it any more than the first novel. My main issue was the characters. Fact is, I didn't like a single one of them. Some were worse than others and some were more tolerable, but I still didn't like them. This book alternates between three perspectives; Link, Ridley, and Nox. Link is probably my least favourite character. I feel like he acts so stupid that it has to be a conscious effort. Either way, it's annoying. For example, for someone who's 18 and lives in America, I'm quite certain everyone knows that UK stands for United Kingdom, not Unified Kingdom. He actually thought that! I'm not Ridley's biggest fan either, but her perspective was the most interesting since she was the one trapped by Silas. Unfortunately, her chapters tended to be the shortest. I find Nox an annoying character, since it seems that all he cares about is winning Ridley's love, even though she's already in love with someone else.
Aside from the characters, the plot was okay. I was able to read it without wanting to put it down forever like I do with some low ratings. I think the only reason I didn't rate this 1 star was because it was actually an easy read, and I was able to sit down and read it without dread. I still found it a bit weak, though. The entire plot was getting to Ridley, so pretty much the whole book with the exception of Ridley's perspective seemed pretty repetitive. Nox's chapters were short, but Link's mainly consisted of find one person, that person refers to another to go to because they don't know the answer, rinse and repeat until we finally get to the rescue. The ending was okay, but I still don't feel like picking up the next book.
Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this book, but it wasn't terrible. I feel like this series just took Link, someone I didn't like, Ridley, someone who I don't have that much of an opinion of, and a bunch of unmemorable characters into a new book series. I remember liking the original series, and I may reread that, but I definitely won't be picking up another book in this spin-off series. You will probably like it if you liked Link and/or Ridley in the original series, but if you didn't, there's not really any super likeable side character to save you from the unlikeable main characters, so I wouldn't recommend it.
I just felt like this book went nowhere interesting. The characters weren't as captivating as the last time and overall I was disappointed. But I liked the fact Liv and John and Amma came back for a part of it, that's why it got 3 stars.
Sigh...It makes me sad that I am not enjoying this spin-off series. As always I have mixed feelings about Ridley... (it's like Rachel on Friends or Robyn on HIMYM, I don't understand why everyone wants to be with her.) I don't think it's just a siren thing.
I am worried that Link is getting dumber and I was so frustrated reading this once the met with up Angelique.
But I love Lucille and Sampson. The haunted house chapter was nothing short of awesome!! I was glad to see Liv and John Breed in the story. Plus Liv being feisty with Floyd is great!
Is there more in the series? Will I read them? Really not sure. Link needs to be smarter.
