By day, Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic in the sprawling Tri-Cities of Eastern Washington. By night, she explores her preternatural side. As a shape-shifter with some unusual talents, Mercy’s found herself maintaining a tenuous harmony between the human and the not-so-human on more than one occasion. This time she may get more than she bargained for.
Marsilia, the local vampire queen, has learned that Mercy crossed her by slaying a member of her clan–and she’s out for blood. But since Mercy is protected from direct reprisal by the werewolf pack (and her close relationship with its sexy Alpha), it won’t be Mercy’s blood Marsilia is after.
It’ll be her friends’.

✅ Paranormal creatures & Magic ✅ Characters ✅ Pace / quick read ✅ Plot ✅ Vampire politics ✅ Stephan is back! ✅ Romance ✅ Meeting Mercy’s mom 😅 ❗️❗️Trigger warnings: necromancy, PTSD, panic attacks, mentions of past rape, ghosts (some malevolent) 🔥 Spice level : 🌶️🌶️ / 5
This book focuses on vampire politics, and I am repeating myself, but I love how each book centers around different species. This series is like the Kate Daniels series; it took me 2 or 3 books to truly get hooked, but now I am addicted and can’t stop reading/listening to them.
I was happy to see Stephan again, especially after he’d been absent from the previous book. I liked him from the start, and I love him even more now. I like his flirtation with Mercy, as long as it remains good-natured and does not hope or expect anything more, because I am team Adam. Still, Stephan showed again and again that, even though he gained something out of it, he was a true friend to Mercy and willing to risk a lot to help her and keep her safe.
I loved the vampire politics, the scheming, and the lies around it. Besides Stephan, who is friendly with Mercy but remains a killer when he needs to be, the rest of the vampires are ruthless, cruel, and cold. They are a mysterious bunch, and I loved seeing how they were lying and backstabbing each other. It was great court politics, and I want to see more of Stephan and the vampires in the rest of the series.
The villain was creepy enough, but I found myself being more invested in the vampire politics than the villain’s machinations. The whole plot involving Amber, Mercy’s old acquaintance, and her haunted house felt shaky at times, and the villain’s plan behind it all was logical, but a little far-fetched, too, maybe… That part of the story was not my favorite, but I still enjoyed the vampire politics and the rest of the book a lot.
I find it a little weird that Mercy, who can’t stand down from a fight or leave someone behind, would leave Chad in his haunted house with a dangerous ghost. It is not her place to protect him, but I find it hard to believe that she was able to just go back home and not wonder about him or want to know what happened after she left.
I love how kind and caring Adam is with Mercy, and how he trusts her to defend herself, while also being fiercely protective of her. I was team Adam from the start, but I love him more with each book. I also adore the fact that he is a father, mature (despite his explosive temper at times), and it shows that he is old, despite not looking his age. It is a nice change from the teen love interest and also from the 500-year-old fae. The fact that Adam is a father, and that it is shown in each book, that his love for Jessie is obvious and central to who he is, makes him even more amazing.
I have to give a special mention to the stick that keeps appearing in Mercy’s life. It has almost become a secondary character, and I am weirdly growing attached to it…
On to book 5 now! I have the series on my Kindle, but I am mostly listening to the dramatized adaptations, and they are *chief’s kiss*.
Basic Plot: Mercy deals with the fallout that comes from having killed a vampire.
Mercy's attitude and contrariness continue to amuse me. There's just something about a woman who does things simply to irritate the people around her, while still managing to be intelligent about the way she does it. One of the first things that struck me about this book is how close the events of this novel take place to the events from the previous one: only about a week of time elapsed between them. That's unusual for a lot of authors of series as I can tell. Plus, the charged content of the previous book would have made a more squeamish person avoid the healing process of the previous novel's events. But Briggs isn't what I'd call a squeamish author. She handles everything well, dealing with Mercy's pain in a realistic, but not overly detailed style. She gives us the impressions we need without being graphic, and I appreciate that. The Graphic Audio also handles everything very well.
By day, Mercy’s all about fixing cars. By night? She’s dodging vampires, wrangling werewolves, and somehow keeping the supernatural world from going up in flames. 🐺🩸
This time the vampire queen, Marsilia, is out for revenge—and if she can’t get to Mercy directly, she’s aiming for the people Mercy loves most. The tension had me holding my breath, and the danger felt so real. Every choice Mercy makes feels heavy, and yet she still brings that fierce loyalty (and stubborn coyote cleverness) we adore her for.
And can we talk about the GraphicAudio production?! 🎧🔥 A full cast, cinematic music, sound effects—it’s like stepping inside the story. Honestly, it feels more like a movie for your ears than just an audiobook.
Not a full 5 stars only because my nerves are still recovering from the chaos 🤯—but wow, what a ride. Already counting down to the next!
This series just keeps getting better and better. Mercedes is a total bada$$ and I really really love Sam, Stefan and Adam!!! Even Z and Uncle Mike have grown on me!
I am binging officially on this series. Oh the trouble Mercy manages to find or the trouble that finds Mercy keeps me intrigued right to the end. Ms. Briggs writes a fine book for a lazy afternoon read. Be forewarned it did not feel so lazy as my heart hammered and I started yelling at the bad people in the story.
