Superstar Marvel writer Gerry Duggan takes on the X-Men, at the height of the Krakoan Era!
Things might be complicated between the new mutant nation and the rest of the world, but it’s simple to the X-Men: You do what’s right, you protect those who need protecting and you save the world we all share. Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Sunfire, Rogue, Wolverine, Synch and Polaris are the chosen champions of mutantkind, and they will not shrink from any battle. From the obsessed High Evolutionary to the bizarre Cordyceps Jones, from Orchis’ Dr. Stasis to the horrifying Headless Horseman, the X-Men will face them head on! But who is the new mutant hero called Captain Krakoa? And who will be elected to the team in the Hellfire Galas? The X-Men clash with the Eternals, the Children of the Vault, M.O.D.O.K. and more — while things get cosmic as the X-Men go planet-size! But when Orchis strikes, who will be left to halt the Fall of X?

The first half gets a 5 stars from me but the last half gets a 3 stars from me soooo....
This is one of the most inconsistent omnibuses/runs for me. It starts so strong. Pepe Lorraz art in the beginning. Great intrigue. Who is Dr. Stasis? Has Ben Urich uncovered Krakoa's secret resurrection protocols for mutants? Will be publish them? And why is an alien casino selling gambling on Earth's survival? Fun stories and concepts that flush out the Krakoan era of X-Men comics. Great exploration into lesser known mutants like Sunfire and Firestar. This run made Synch one of my top 10 X-Men. Great.
But by the end, Duggan is bogged down by the incredibly rushed feeling Fall of X. You will be lost in the last 4-6 issues or so if you have not read or have no context for the other X books that were ongoing during the Fall of X.
Overall, Krakoa is my favorite thing from comics. This just about completes my Krakoan Era collection (I'm only missing 3 miniseries from throughout the era). The first half of this Omni collects some of my favorite Krakoan stories and moments. But upon rereads, the rushed nature of this run stands out like a sore thumb. Many cool concepts and character archs are rushed through for the sake of checking off boxes in a hand-over-foot stumble across the finish line. It made it. It crossed the finish line for me, but it tumbled across it.
Even the art suffers as you near the end. It starts with Lorraz's incredible artwork. But it hits low lows during Phil Noto's time on the title. I really like some of Noto's work. I like his work on Poe Dameron and other X titles before this. But it's clear that he only has a couple different faces he draws. Normally, they're different enough that it doesn't bother me but the rushed nature of his art leaves it lacking in detail and makes it worse.
The first half of this Omni and the incredible concepts and character moments found throughout it all elevates this to 4 stars for me, despite the many complaints I have for the second half of the run.
