Yuri anthology time! Much as these tend to be wildly hit or miss, I do look back fondly on the days when a new volume of Eclair would show up and introduce a new mangaka to me or showcase one I already knew.

This, however, is not that. It’s a series of interconnected stories done by one person, which puts it more in line with the ongoing (at time of writing anyhoo) Assorted Entanglements. I like this one a bit better though.

At only two volumes, this has no time to waste and thus wastes no time. The first story, where poor Oomiya confides her interest in the polite Kagami to her friend and (accidentally) several other students at school, is probably the best.

The story deals with having your secret crush become significantly less secret and the fallout from that. Oomiya’s already feeling awkward because of the ‘we’re both girls’ thing and her blunder just makes it the whole school’s business. It’s one of those very accepting yuri stories, but it does remember that men exist, so a reasonable middle ground.

I liked this one and it was fun seeing a two chapter follow-up later with them as a slightly older couple. It pivots a little to reflect on insecurities with a partner and being obsessed with putting one’s best foot forward. The end of the first part of this is a great ‘dun dun dun’ moment.

The next couple up is Sajimoto and Taga. I hate to say it, but the art kind of squashes this one for me. Taga’s facial expressions are excessively angular and I found them super off-putting. It’s a design choice, the art in here is solid throughout, but one that didn’t work for me at all.

The story itself is fine - Sajimoto notices Taga noticing somebody else, but sparks fly when Sajimoto is super nice. This one focuses mostly on acceptance of another’s quirks and hobbies and is fine, if unremarkable. This story actually gets better in the bonus chapter as it has some wickedly effective misdirection.

The last couple are two girls from different schools, who come together over their competitive nature. They’re okay, but even the presence of gyaru fashion can’t elevate this above average. They, too, fare better in the bonus story.

Not terrible, not great. An enjoyable read if you like these sorts of stories, which I do, but it isn’t as amazing as Eclair ever got. Then again, it’s not as godawful as some of the other anthologies. As the blurb says, it’s more of a celebration than a deep dive, but it celebrates pretty well.

3.5 stars - no rounding up since it isn’t that good, but I am more than content with it and will definitely check the next volume out since it does feel like the mangaka got better as they went along.

I definitely got some of the characters a bit mixed up, but it was cute!
