This was so so sweet! I love romances, I love cats, I love baking shows - so this book just ended up being the perfect combination for a cozy spring read. The only thing that really bothered me was that while Lucas and Clem felt so real and so relatable, the "villain" was a bit too cartoon-ish for my liking.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
Clem is the baker in charge of creating delicious cat-themed treats for the loyal customers of the Catpurrcino cat café. From iced kitten doughnuts to macarons with ears and whiskers, Clem's creations always bring a smile to the face of anyone lucky enough to taste them. But outside of the café's kitchen, Clem struggles with feelings of anxiety and where she fits in. Until Sylvie, the owner of the café, decides to push her out of her comfort zone. The Whisked Away baking competition is a chance for Clem to shine and find her inner confidence. Also competing this year is Lucas, the owner of Muddy Paws café, accompanied by his faithful Golden Retriever Reina. The stage is set for an epic cake-off between cats and dogs. But as Clem stumbles in the first challenge, Lucas always seems to be there with an encouraging word and a smile. The chemistry between them is soon undeniable. Is this just the heat in the kitchen? Or something real? And can their feelings survive a showdown in the final round...
Clem adores baking, and she adores cats. So being the resident baker for a cat cafe is a perfect job for her. She has an undercurrent of anxiety that forces her to overthink and worry - but it only made me like her more. Plus she has a very good reason for feeling that way. She’s incredibly kind and thoughtful, considerate of how others are feeling and wanting to look after them. I honestly adore Clem. If I had the opportunity to be her friend, I would jump at the chance. Who wouldn’t want a talented baker to feed you treats AND they’re obsessed with cats? She’s my match made in heaven. Lucas is quite the sweetheart. He cares for his family and is incredibly passionate about his business - and his rather energetic pup! I liked that we got to see his way of thinking in this dual POV story. Though at times he did frustrate me, I could see his compassion for the plight of others and his desire to ensure people’s happiness. I definitely enjoyed his interactions with Clem as well - especially his ability to take in the situation and calm Clem down when needed so she feels more comfortable. I wouldn’t mind having someone like that by my side when things feel too much.
Despite not having read the first book, the moment I saw this available to request I JUMPED on it. I’m a massive cat lover (I have 5!) and the thought of a book set in a cat cafe mixed with baking in the style of the Great British Bake Off? Hell yes, sign me up! The plot from start to finish was just utter perfection for me. I cannot fault the flow or the contents. I wanted more, more, more and I got it! I was absolutely hooked and could scarcely put the book down! Something I really appreciated was the fact that Rowlands did not shy away from the inclusion of anxiety - namely Clem’s. The fact she showed how vulnerable Clem feels in those down moments but also the coping mechanisms she has gained? Absolutely brilliant. As someone who suffers from anxiety myself, and the fact it can have sudden onset in overwhelming circumstances, I absolutely loved this unapologetic inclusion. More authors need to follow this example! The characters were great and helped enhance the overall story. There were one or two I wish we got a bit more background on but generally, they all made a great impression and helped move the story along. Romance wise, there was a lot going on. There was a hit of insta-love (which I’m not the biggest fan of) but the fact this blossomed into a lovely friendship between our two main characters, I was all for it. It certainly wasn’t smooth sailing which I love - I’m a big fan of some drama! But the romance was sweet and very heart warming. The ending was a wonderful ending to this absolutely delightful story! I am in desperate need for more books in this series - giving me more fluff and more cats!
Overall, Cake Off at the Cat Cafe is a stunning book that I absolutely adored.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Thank you again to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an advanced copy of this book.
Not the worst book ever, the writing is solid, I'm just not the audience for hallmark romances filled with clichés and sugar. I'll never understand romance books where the characters meet and all of a sudden they are into each other for no reason besides "oh my god he/she is so beautiful". My eyes now need physical therapy from all the rolling. I wouldn't usually pick up this kind of book, but what can I say, I got curious because of the kitties.
I loved this next book in this series. This was so sweet with all the cats and I enjoyed reading about the baking contest. I guessed the romantic side of the story but, want to find out what happens next. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
What a heartwarming, feel good book. I loved the storyline and the predictability of Clem and Lucas’s relationship. Really enjoying the ‘cat cafe’ series 😻
Having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the Cat Café series, I was excited to dive into this second instalment.
Rachel Rowlands does not disappoint, delivering another delightful tale filled with charm, humour, and heart.
It was great to catch up with Emma, Jared, and Sylvie, who we were introduced to in the first book.
This time, the focus shifts to Clem, the baker at the café, and Lucas, who co-owns Muddy Paws, a dog-themed café also set in the picturesque Lake District.
Watching Clem come into her own as she navigates her anxiety, shyness, and past experiences of bullying was particularly moving.
Her journey feels relatable and inspiring, as she works to find her confidence and embrace her talents.
The baking competition theme adds a layer of fun and excitement, and fans of The Great British Bake Off will be hooked.
As the competition hots up, so does the chemistry between Clem and Lucas - will the sparks between them fizzle or pop?
Their budding romance adds an extra layer of warmth and tension to an already engaging story.
The lovable characters, both human and feline, make the story even more enjoyable, and the Cat Café itself continues to be a warm and inviting setting.
Rowlands’ storytelling is engaging and light-hearted, with moments of poignancy that deepen the narrative.
It’s the perfect read for curling up with a cup of tea and some cake, especially if you're a fan of cosy stories and cats.
This book is a heartwarming treat, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for the Cat Café!
With thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another book in the ‘disappointment-corner’. I don’t know who approved of this but it shouldn’t have left the drafts. Like seriously, the only thing that Clem and Lucas had going for them both was their ‘cat vs dog’ rivalry thing during the contest and that she was anxious, insecure and doubtful of herself ALL THE TIME. Also it was said that they are 29 y/o? Yeah doesn’t seem like it. 29? More like 9 y/o. Because WHAT is that reasoning? The reasoning for everything that was said and thought in this book? YIKES. I felt like bashing my head against a wall over and over, until I have a big bruise. Up until the point where you can’t see where the bruise ends and where my head starts.
Characters? Bland. Only got ‘better’ on the last pages of the book🙂 too late btw, already hate-read the entire thing. Their chemistry? Very forgettable. If you ask me what I remember from the entire 318 pages of the book? Nothing. I couldn’t tell you a single thing.
I can’t explain it other than: I felt like it was written by an elementary school student. The entire flow of the book was off. The storyline and the dialogue just didn’t hit and the way how almost all of these decisions were being made like they were literally 9 y/o is pathetic.
“What would Lucas think if he knew that I didn’t enter the contest myself? That I didn’t enter because I wanted to?” (Boo hoo)
Also can we talk about the reason why Lucas didn’t want to see where things would go with Clem? Because he didn’t think that she would understand how his sick dad would be put first in his life. That she would hate him for it. So instead of telling her how it would be and letting her make the decision herself… he made it for her and decided that it just wasn’t worth it. RIGHT, GREAT COMMUNICATION.
Nothing in this book was worth the torture, not even all the kitties or Reina (Lucas’ dog). So spare yourself and SKIP THIS.
Cake Off at the Cat Café by Rachel Rowlands is a delightful treat of a read perfect for anyone who loves feel-good romance, cozy cafés, and a generous dose of baked goods. The setting is adorable (cat-themed desserts? Yes, please), and the characters are just as heartwarming.
Clem is a relatable and endearing protagonist. Her journey from anxious and uncertain to more confident and self-assured is both believable and uplifting. Lucas, with his golden retriever sidekick Reina, is the perfect mix of gentle charm and steady support. Their chemistry is slow-burn and sweet, and watching their relationship unfold during a high-stakes baking competition was a joy.
The cat-vs-dog café rivalry adds a fun and whimsical touch, and the competition format keeps the story moving at a nice pace. Rowlands balances emotional growth with romance and light humor, creating a well-rounded read that feels like a warm hug.
A few of the side characters and plot points could have been fleshed out a bit more, especially around the baking competition's final showdown. Still, this book is a cozy gem, perfect for curling up with a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Highly recommended for fans of contemporary romance with heart and a bit of fluff (both feline and canine!).
Thank you Pansing for sending me a copy in exchange for honest review.
You know what, this is exactly what I want and expect from a book called Cake Off at the Cat Cafe! Much like the food in it, it's light and sweet and fluffy and looks very cute.
After a traumatic event in uni, Clem struggles with her mental health while working as a baker in Catpurrcino. Lucas, on the other hand, is baking for the local dog cafe, Muddy Paws. When a televised baking competition comes to town, they end up meeting and competing, and sparks fly (iykyk). It's adorable (if wildly unrealistic) and exactly the relaxing read I needed today. My strongest criticism is I wanted to see more of the cats.
Many thanks to Hodder & Stoughton for providing me with an eARC of this one - all opinions are of course my own.
Whisks at the ready! This summer, two local cafes will go head-to-head in a baking competition where more is at stake than just the trophy... Will true love be the icing on the cake?
Clem is the baker in charge of creating delicious cat-themed treats for the loyal customers of the Catpurrcino cat café. From iced kitten doughnuts to macarons with ears and whiskers, Clem's creations always bring a smile to the face of anyone lucky enough to taste them.

My comments:
I enjoyed this book a lot, Clem and Lucas were wonderful characters. I loved how Lucas supported Clem when she lost confidence and was always their to help her when she struggled. I also loved how Clem grew throughout the novel and started to gain confidence and pushed herself out of her comfort zone. I was able to connect with both characters in a lot of ways as due to being totally blind I've always suffered from lack of self belief so I could really connect with Clem in that sense.
I loved how Lucas was supportive to his family and put them first and how throughout the book he realised that having a relationship did not need to affect his other duties. It was lovely to see how they were supported throughout the compitition by Silvie, Dwane and all the side characters such as friends and family. I can't wait for book 3 in this series and I'll be keeping a look out for more by this author.
This is my first Rowlands read, and I absolutely loved it from start to finish. I'll be going back to read the first book because I actually didn't realise this was the second in the series! (you literally could not tell)
One thing that struck me with this book was the mental health representation AND the carers representation of what it's like to have a disabled parent and feel like you aren't doing enough for them because of how rigged the system is. Having a well rounded POV from both Clem and Lucas and both their stories were really central to WHY they were doing the competition which I absolutely loved.
After the traumatic event at uni, Clem struggles with an overwhelming sense of anxiety which has a big impact on her mental health. Her job at Catpurrcino as the star baker seems to be the only thing keeping her afloat. We also meet Lucas, who bakes for the local dog cafe, Muddy Paws, working in partnership with his best friend. When a TV baking competition announcement goes up in their local town, both Lucas and Clem enter to try their luck at winning the cash prize which will help their businesses and personal lives flourish. When they meet at the competition, sparks begin to fly immediately. They are magnetically drawn to each other, and this wasn't insta-lovey at all. It was a slow burn that developed into this meaningful relationship between the two of them and I enjoyed that they had their own hurdles to face individually, and together. They developed as characters along the way and the story, plot twists, and the cats had me falling in love!
This was a wonderful little slice-of-life romance for me, and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a cozy romance (with cats, AND dogs!)
A big thank you to Netgalley for access to this arc, looking forward to future reads by this author!
This book was just as good as the first one! I love the whole Great British Bake Off vibe of the plot! I see a lot of myself in Clem. I got diagnosed with anxiety a few years ago and I struggle with a lot of the same doubts Clem does. Its nice to see if being represented and I think Rachel Rowlands does a wonderful job of highlighting issues in a very real way. I love how Clem gains confidence slowly over the book and learns to control her anxiety a bit more. I love how the people around her help her see how great she is. Lucas is so dreamy! I love how he was always there to step in when Clem needed help and the attention gotten off her. He did annoy me a tiny bit when he kept pushing Clem away after kissing her and flirting, like bro you were kinda leading her on, but I also like that he owned up to his mistakes. Green flag on a man that can apologise. Their relationship is definitely so cute! They support each other through their struggles and really compliment each other. The gentle flirting was so cute! There were definitely a few plot twists in this that made me like whoaaaaa did not see that coming at all! I like when I'm taken by surprise! Would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants a cute spring to summer romance with baking and lots of fluffy friends! 0.5🌶
It’s very rare I give 5 stars and it’s only to books I would read again. I really enjoyed this book. My heart went out to Clem with her anxiety especially as to how and why it was triggered. Loved the cat cafe and the whole story in general. My only gripe..there were a few continuity errors. Clem says Emmie was kind to her when she started at the cafe but (having read the first book), Clem was already at the cafe when E started. Clem had been there 2 years in this book and working out the timeline Emmie a year. I found it strange that they were all at uni together even though there was a 4 year age gap (I know Lucas was in the year above) but it seemed strange that both him and G deferred going to uni until they were in their twenties. On the first page Clem had made a cake …2 tiers of pale turquoise icing, a ball of ….. spinning around the middle layer (on a 2 tier cake!!!). Despite the criticism (and I know I am very picky 😂), this was a great read and I thoroughly recommend it.

Thank you to NetGalley, Hodder & Stoughton and Rachel Rowlands for allowing me to ARC read for ‘Cake Off at the Cat Café.’
If you’re looking for a gorgeous, clean romance that will give you those ‘feel good’ vibes, this book is the one for you!
The story is ‘Great British Bake Off’ inspired, and I loved the underlying theme of building confidence, and overcoming mental health issues.
This is marketed as being an ‘enemies to lovers’ romance, but I didn’t feel that these two were enemies at all, there was no animosity, and it felt more like they would be ‘acquaintances.’ I loved the characters, I did find they had no chemistry at all for the first 50%, but everything seemed to ‘gel’ after this point as the story progressed. I’d have liked more cat-content on top of this as well, seeing as the cat cafe is mentioned in the title (but I’m nit-picking).
I felt so cozy reading this low-stakes love story, and I loved the happily ever after ending.
This was the second of the series set in Catpurrcino - and what’s not to love in a cat cafe. It’s purrfectly possible to read this as a stand-alone but I recommend reading the whole series.
I shall leave the kitty puns now - this is a cosy read but also in a way, reflective
It provides an ideal opportunity to shown that actions - whenever they happen can have repercussions many years later. This centres around Clem, badly treated by a so-called friend at University - such that her actions have affected Clem into adulthood and left crippling anxiety. Add to this unrequited love and an unexpected coincidence and this turns into a love story and ultimately redemption. So it’s Clem for team cat and Lucas for team dog.
Add in a Bake Off style cookery competition and cat-versus-dog - and this makes for a fun read
It’s well written with just enough intrigue to make page turning essential - it’s been a just one more chapter/page book.
Are you a cat or a dog person? Who would win in an epic battle between cats and dogs? Depending on those answer you are either Team Clem or Team Lucas.
One works for Catpurrcino, and the other for Muddy Paws and both are entered into a bake off style competition for local small busineses, And both have excellent reasons for wanting to win.
Told from both perspectives, I loved getting to know our main characters, and their businesses and related animals.
I loved seeing how Clem grows slowly in confidence, given where she starts the book, and I was touched by sensitivity that Lucas's father's illness was described with.
I loved picturing the various bakes and wish I could have been there live to taste test them.
I have loved this second book in the cat cafe series and can't wait to read the next book.
Thank you to Hodder & Stoughton and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I had a fun time reading about Clem, who is a baker at a Cat Cafe. She hates to be perceived and gets really anxious in most situations. She’s entered into a baking competition, where she meets another competitor, a dog cafe owner Lucas who is also going through a lot in his own life.
These two were adorable together. I liked that even though the attraction was there from the beginning, it didn’t feel like insta love, it was slower to develop and meaningful. Both of their issues had them going back and forth and seeing their development through the story was everything!
The characters were great, the writing was descriptive surrounding the cats and baking which was nice and overall this was a good read!
Thank you Hodder & Stoughton for providing this ARC via NetGalley.
I always enjoy a light-hearted romance in between more serious reads, and this one ticked all the boxes. Likeable characters with decent back-stories and a large helping of cats and cake! The story was well-paced and kept me interested throughout. I was rooting for our leading lady and gent to overcome their respective obstacles and get together for a happy ending. My only criticism is the setting - the book is set in the Lake District, an area I have visited several times and love. I didn't get any real sense that the events were taking place there, it could have been anywhere.I think I would have preferred if it were set in a fictional town popular with hikers, rather than one that actually exists in reality. However, apart from that it was a fun read and I would recommend it to anybody who enjoys this genre. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Clem is the baker at the Catpurrcino cat cafe - she suffers with crippling anxiety about whether she is good enough. Lucas is the co-owner of the Muddy Paws Cafe, a dog friendly cafe - he is going through some serious family problems. Both of them are entered into the Whisked Away baking competition, and both want to win the large prize money to help with the issues they are facing. Can they put their attraction aside, and each concentrate on the tasks ahead?
This was an enjoyable story, with compelling characters. I really felt for Clem and her nasty bouts of anxiety. I loved Lucas, he was very caring and considerate, putting everyone else first. A sweet story, easy to read, and nicely written.
