Death of a Loved One in Time of Pandemic is Anthony Shieh’s deep, moving memoir about
the unexpected death of his mother, who he loses during the COVID-19 limbo, and the
wrenching aftermath him and his family has to endure.

Anthony takes us in his journey through grief, pain, and isolation as he recalls every
perpetual and monumental memory of his mother that ultimately feels like a long goodbye.
A heartfelt story of familial love between a mother and a son that leaves us into a state of
existential wondering on how life is truly short, and that we must cherish every moment we
have with our loved ones because we will never know when those moments would last,
especially in this time of pandemic.

I, too, have also recently lost a loved one in these challenging times and reading this book,
how he articulates his agony really takes the words out of my mouth. The ebb and flow of
sadness, the sense of general confusion and uncertainty about the future—his words find
their way into our hearts to confront our enigmatic feelings about death and what it’s like to
feel love and loss at the same time.

In his book, he touches upon the unimaginable impact of the pandemic and the new normal
on him and his family. As the world continues to navigate through the pandemic, writing has
been a powerful instrument for him to slowly reclaim his life. The newfound meaning of life
that sparks a sense of optimism in him to march forward against all odds.

A portrait of missed milestones and fleeting moments of joy, Death of a Loved One in Time
of Pandemic comes to an illuminating conclusion that grief, as faceless as it is, must be
looked into its hollow eyes and be embraced to finally initiate our path of healing and
recovery.
