What if there was a guy who enjoyed thinking about all those weird little what-ifs that go through our heads? What if that somebody turned them into engaging, imaginative fiction?
That weirdo is Nik V. Markevicius. He’s the author of a great many tales featuring strange and funny distortions of genre and expectation, most notably the Enchanted Forest State Forest saga.
A fan of the Oxford comma, Nik lives in Aurora, Illinois with his family, NSFW puppets, and his imaginary enemy. He also leads the Fox Valley Writers crew, loves hockey in the extreme, and blames ninjas whenever something goes sideways.
This is my official first outing with Nik Markevicius, and I thought it would be a good entry spot into the EFSF (Enchanted Forest State Forest) series. Don't be fooled by how long it took me to read it - unfortunately life slowed down my reading pace. The first story was a bit of an intro into how Joe became the sheriff of the EFSF and it gave just enough background that I could enjoy the rest of the series as small pieces to the larger series.
Nik's writing is crisp and on point, and our MC Joe reminds me a bit of Dresden without the wizard part. He's impulsive and witty with an impulse for getting in trouble. Still for his tough and jaded exterior, Joe still has principals and a code (even if it's slightly flexible) for dealing with the humans and non-humans in his midst. Older fans of Arthur Daigle's writing would also enjoy this series, as it is a mix of fantasy with some humor, but isn't PG.
The Enchanted Forest is an interesting setting with a multitude of different beings with Roshia being the gateway between a normal forest preserve in Illinois and the rest of the Enchanted Castle on the other side of the veil.
This was an exciting action packed adventure through all the short stories. Even the last story which had a different narrator had high suspense and mystery surrounding it. I look forward to reading more EFST books.
