Katherine "Kate" Macdonald writes the books she wishes she could have read more of as a teen—stories of fierce girls and gentle boys, of romance and adventure, and where the "three Cs" (chemistry, communication and consent) reign supreme. There may still be a little bit of miscommunication along the way as the characters grow as people, but she tries not to rely on that trope too much!

She loves books packed with witty banter, stories where you can feel the love growing between a pair, that include excellent, well-developed side-characters and a few subtly-foreshadowed twists and turns. She despises toxic relationships and tales that rely on old-fashioned notions of male and female stereotypes. She enjoys bending expectations and crafting worlds where sexism is a thing of the past. She considers herself an LGBTQIA+ friendly author, and her stories include a range of characters from within the community and absolutely no discrimination in sight.

She holds a BA in English and Creative Writing from Lancaster University, and a PGCE in teaching English and Drama from the University of Exeter. She's been a writer since she was old enough to hold a crayon, but it was only after surviving a year of parenthood and a full-time job on less than six hours of sleep a night that she finally gained the courage to publish her debut novel, "The Rose and the Thorn." It's a retelling of Beauty and the Beast inspired by a dream of a girl surrounded by snow in a field of flowers.

At her heart, Macdonald is storyteller, and it is her dream to inspire others in the way that she has been inspired.

She lives in Devon with her manic child and well-behaved cats.

If you were anything like me, then you probably read otome isekai manga and manhwas during covid. Obsessively. Well, if it wasn't you, it was definitely me, and even to this day I hold the otome isekai/villainess genre close to my heart.

The Girl Who Fell Through Time is similar in that regard, in that it is a historical romance with a hint of fantasy elements. Selene Duskbriar, after her year of marriage to the duke and finding out that he was treasonous to the kingdom, was shot at. Thus, ending her life. Except, not, when she woke up one year ago, on the day where the duke was planning to propose to her at her parent's party. Terrified of living that reality all over again, she asks Lord Dorian Nightbloom, an unassuming noble with nothing striking in particular, to marry her, which he agreed.

This story was such a delight to read from start to end, with an ending that frankly should be illegal. But thank goodness this is a duology! The plot was intriguing, as we navigate through Selene's second life and second marriage, and while her relationship with him deepens, we learn more about Dorian as well, and we find out he's not much of the wallflower as he makes himself seen. The first half explores their relationship together, while the second half highlights more on the drama and mystery involving the Duke, because even in this timeline he has his eyes set on Selene. It had me glued to the page, unwilling to part. The writing was also such a delight to read, the way the author mixes the prose with beautiful imagery and detail but in such a way that it doesn’t feel heavy or bogged down. It was just so easy to imagine the scenes in my head. Ugh. Love.

The romance. The romance??? THE ROMANCE. All that time developing their relationship, so when they finally realised their feelings for each other?? Had me giggling, had me gagging, had me yearning like crazy. It was addictive. The way these two characters fit so nicely 😭💖 Scarred from her previous life with the duke, she was apprehensive with Dorian, but he was so patient and gave her the space she needed to process everything, and was always an attentive listener to her. What more could I ask for??? Bro idkwhat else to write ah but if you love historical romance and OI mangas/manhwas this is right up your alley! This will be available at the end of this month 💖

Thank you to Booksprout and the author for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review hehe

“Does it hurt when I touch you?” she asks.
He shakes his head. “It only hurts when you don’t.”

I started this at 10pm, stayed up till 2am, and finished before noon the next day. As such, I think it's safe to say that I absolutely adored this book. A new Katherine Macdonald favorite and sure to be one of my top reads of the year. I can't wait for book two!

Another duology now completed!

The Girl Who Fell Through Time fulfils my long awaited desire of writing a book about a marriage of convenience. It also scratches my time-travel itch, although I will admit it's not as much a part of the book as I would like. (Guess I'll have to write another one)

It was inspired by reading far too much manhwa and also because I binge watched Spy Family and wanted a marriage of convenience and also a found family dynamic (but also with a LOT more romance). It's set in a regency inspired society that worships four gods, but otherwise operates a lot like early 1800s England... though there are references to indoor plumbing because I don't want my poor characters to suffer THAT much. Abusive marriages, wounds, death, illness? Sure. No running water? Abhorrent.

When I first starting writing, Selene was initially meant to be much more vain and spoiled, but I quickly realised that her awful first marriage would have rubbed a lot of this away from her, and she was a lot softer--and meeker--as a result. I wanted a heroine who didn't have to ride into battle to be strong, whose strength lay in other areas, who was no less of a badass because she didn't pick up a sword. I have written many of those. I'll write many more. But there are different kinds of strength.

Dorian, meanwhile, might be a bit of a swash-buckler, but like Selene, his real strength lies in his heart. He's more reserved and bookish than any of my other heroes, but I think I love him all the more for it.

I hope that you do, too.

I’m gonna throw up. This was so good oh MY GOD. It needed a little more editing cus there was some grammar and spelling mix ups but I can’t even be the slightest bit peeved about that because this story was INCREDIBLE.

In a sea of broody shadow daddies, I have found sweet, sweet Dorian Nightbloom! He’s such a beautiful breath of fresh air!! And I even really liked Selene as a FMC, her troubles were relatable and she wasn’t a snarky badass like so many other FMCs are nowadays. And I mean no offense or insult to authors who have written shadow daddies and overpowered FMCs, or the ones who enjoy reading those books, but I am so incredibly tired of both. But that is a me problem.

It has been so long since a book has pulled me in from just the first few pages. The romance had me giggling and kicking my feet (internally). The found family was wonderfully done. I only was a little annoyed at Selene at first because I thought maybe she felt herself too good to downgrade her lifestyle, but I quickly realized that she had been so ingrained in her former lifestyle that it was simply a shock to her moving into Dorian’s house and not necessarily her turning her nose up at the way he “ran” his household. Watching her come to be comfortable with herself and start to feel empowered was heartwarming.

Katherine Macdonald thank you so much for this wonderful experience and I will be buying both this book and the 2nd one in paperback when the 2nd book releases, since I read this on KU. And if you’re seeing this I would love to be an ARC reader for any of your future books 😭

This is a, dare I say, 6 star read ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I believe this story consumed me just as much as I did it.

There were so many elements here that I absolutely adore. Selene is not your typical “ bad ass “ mfc, but she is strong in her own ways and soft in others that matter just as much.
There is mystery, regency vibes, a sweet slow burn romance, and so much more.

I did not want to put this book down -
& those last lines had me gasping!
Can not wait for the second book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - I usually go for a morally grey, shadow daddy, enemies to lovers storyline, so imagine my surprise when I picked up this book and absolutely loved it!

The main character was sweet but strong, determined to make a difference in her life and station. The MMC also allowed her to be herself in a time when that wasn't allowed. I loved them together.
A Refreshing Change of Pace

The pacing was good, the characters and their relationships evolved naturally, and the romance was slow but came to fruition nicely. I usually don't like time travel, but this was done in such a way that it was not intrusive and was seamlessly put into the story line. I am now a fan!

The twist at the end I had vague inklings about, but I was still surprised when I came about. I like that it ended with the main characters in a good place, not a crazy cliffhanger.

All in all, this was an excellent read. I can't wait to read book 2!!!!

Absolutely delightful! My favorite of Macdonald’s books since A Curse of Hope and Shadows—and very much a similar vibe. There is just enough mystery and intrigue to make you wonder how it will all come together, while in the meantime you can luxuriate in an expertly written slow burn. Highly recommend, and will definitely read part 2.

While this was a slower paced story than others by this author, it was just as engaging. I loved watching the sweet, gentle romance unfold between Selene and Dorian—much needed after what Selene has gone through! Seeing Selene start to heal and grow made the journey that much more satisfying. It was fun to see how clever she can be with the resources at hand.

As always, I swooned for the LI—Dorian is reserved and kindhearted, but on multiple occasions reminded me of Westley from The Princess Bride. I found myself grinning and squealing in delight as he and Selene bonded over a number of things. They are too cute!

I’m very much looking forward to what’s in store for the next book!

This book gripped me from the start, and I just couldn't stop reading. In fact, I finished it in less than a day.

Intrigue, atmosphere, and intriguing characters and relationships. These were the three main points that made the book for me.

I feel that most of the reviews on Katherine Macdonalds' book focus mostly on the romantic relationship. For me, the relationship was ok (I think I'll be more into it after finishing the duology) but the plot and simply the "vibes" she can evoke so easily are what worked so well for me, and one of the main reasons I keep returning to her books.

The pace felt both slow and fast at the same time, like nothing much was happening, but the everyday bits felt important.
I just wasn't a fan of the present tense. But that's on me, and most of the time I was able to overlook it.

All in all, a very intriguing read that completely grabbed me and made me glad I had the ARC of the second book to start right after finishing.

Beware:
1. It ends with most of the questions unanswered. I'm hoping the second book will have those answers;
2. There is a sex scene.

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

What a fun story and a little but different than the author’s usual fare while still containing my absolute favorite techniques of hers.

The story starts off with a bang both getting us thoroughly on our MC Selene’s side, introducing us to the conflict at hand and making us hate an antagonist rather thoroughly. And all in one chapter!

I love how contrast is used here. The brief bit we saw before the time travel carries so much weight and truly lets us appreciate what can be different and HOW different it can be!

Our LI Dorian is a regular sweetheart and more soft spoken than some of MacDonald’s other couples but that just makes me live for his words all the more. The gentle way he interacts with Selene is reminiscent of all the fairy tale princes I loved as a child but he has realistic layers to him that make him so much more intriguing.

I adore this couple in a complete different way than I have adored MacDonald’s other works but I am happy to add them to the collection in my heart.

I received this as an ARC because this is the absolute truth: I'm a sucker for time travel stories slow burns and regency vibes and I NEEDED to read this book immediately. The Girl Who Fell Through Time checked all of those boxes and more! From the first delightful chapter heading illustration to the sweet fantasy romance and amazing ending (ahem, cliffhanger) I was completely immersed in the story of Selene and Dorian. I was in love with Dorian within pages of meeting him! The story is engaging and feels like you're really IN it – the best kind of story. I absolutely wanted more and at the same time knew that this was the PERFECT way to tell part one of this story. I immediately ordered a physical copy of this book and pre-ordered the sequel coming in July (which can't get here fast enough!)

“The Girl Who Fell Through Time” is a beautifully written fantasy novel. While it’s a little bit of a departure from Macdonald’s typical writing, most of the elements readers come to expect from her are present: rich world building, fully developed characters, and romance that tugs at your heartstrings.

Despite a prologue that is very intense, the story unfolds at a slightly slower pace, but not too slow that it drags. We find the FMC Selene being horribly betrayed by her husband and subsequently finding herself back in time to before she married him. Will she marry him again or forge a different path for her future?

As per usual, Macdonald writes a beautiful romance that feels genuine and natural; no forced insta-love here. We also get hit with a cliffhanger that leaves you with all the feels while you impatiently await book 2.

If you like tender regency era romance with beautifully written characters and found family, then chances are you will love “The Girl Who Fell Through Time”.

I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout, however this review is my own unbiased personal opinion, left of my own volition.

I am such a sucker for the specific trope(s) in this book so I was happy to overlook the occasional editing issue (missing words here and there, clunky re-use of something already stated almost word for word) and absolutely devoured this in one night. Also features a delightful change of pace from the popular "grrr I'm a villain" MMC characterization.

A lovely read that demands you pick up Book 2 immediately.

It’s nearly 1 AM, and I was supposed to go to bed at 8:00 PM. I couldn’t put this book down. I LOVED Selene and Dorian. Dorian may be in my top five male main characters of all time. The romance in this book is true romance, not insta-love or lust, and the story is very well-written. Ugh- just one of those stories that will never leave my head

'The problem with holding you, Selene. Is that every time I do, it gets a little harder to let go.'

FINALLY! A six star read!! It was cosy and romantic, I binged this so fast. O.B.S.E.S.S.E.D!!!

Dorian is my new favourite book boyfriend; he is genuinely the sweetest golden retriever.
"You're very pretty and it makes me nervous sometimes." LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING???
With the romantasy genre recently, I have grown used to MMCs being broody and lowkey mean. Yes Dorian had some brooding moments (which I did love), but overall he is so soft and sweet and it was such a breath of fresh air. He has created a new type for me <3

Now, the actual book was great. The writing immersed me in the story and I was really sad when it was over... GOOD THING I HAVE THE SEQUEL ON ITS WAYY MWAHAHHA

'"You look like the night sky," he murmurs
"Then try not to get lost in me."
"That's a dangerous thing to ask."'

I was honored to be an ARC reader for this story.

Oddly Specific Reader Recommendation
Are you the type of person who loves those mobile games where you gradually renovate an old mansion while discovering love and solving mysteries? Like "Merge Mansion," "Merge Gardens," those kinds of games? You'll also love this book! There's no mini games to read the chapters, I promise, but the same "bringing an old estate to new glory one room at a time while uncovering deep betrayal and falling in love" vibe happens. Except even better because no ads or microtransactions.

That said, here's my more detailed review.

The Writing
Fantastic. Delightful. Delectable, even. There was not a single time where I wished for more edits or got taken out of the story. Not a single time I was compelled to put the story down. Ms. Macdonald's ability to paint a setting in technicolor is remarkable. But it's not just that the author gives you all the factual details of a setting - it's all told through the main character's perspective, and the author understands that means we're going to perceive things differently depending on when Selene is reserved, sociable, anxious, or relaxed. I was always attuned to Selene's emotions, always vividly living the scene, always turning pages for the next event. I love Ms. Macdonald's writing voice and I was left craving more.

The Plot
I'm not the biggest romance reader - something I'm actively trying to change - and one of the things I tend to get stuck on is what I call the plot "balance." The important story in romance is the relationship, yes. But when you also introduce as high of stakes as "the safety of the whole kingdom" and "a mysterious goddess of unknown origin" and "literal time travel," I want to be engaged in those plot points. It can get frustrating when "saving the world" seems to have patience to wait while the leads are figuring out how they feel about each other.

If your opinions are similar to mine, I'm happy to say this book gets that balance perfectly for a simple but genius reason - the relationship and the high-stakes mystery of the plot are connected. The lead characters are only able to accomplish their goals by building their trust and affection for each other. So when I see them communicating through their feelings, building alliances through genuine trust and respect, facing their own attachment fears together, it also advances our understanding of those mysterious forces threatening their land. This is the perfect balance I've needed and didn't realize I was searching for.

The Characters
I'm a sucker for a cast of colorful characters who build a found family through hard work and respect, and you'll definitely find that here. You'll only love them more as they grow in their bonds through well-deserved camaraderie.

Selene - our leading lady - what a lady. In a world that so often treats the idea of a "strong female protagonist" as a woman who's "not like other girls," Ms. Macdonald has given us a protagonist who is strong because of her tenacity in the face of the horrors she's survived. Selene is privileged, vulnerable, and domestic - a true court lady. And at no point does the story make her apologize for that or forsake that in order to succeed. Instead we confront how that privileged life also came with layers of emotional abuse meant to keep her small and meek. We watch her nurture her talents (and herself) to surpass her abusers' expectations and learn how everything she looked down on in herself is actually an asset. Her healing journey from the abuse she had normalized in her past life (both spousal and parental) is raw and powerful.

Dorian - the love interest - was the reason I requested the ARC in the first place. Great example of my fictional crush archetype, and OH BOY did he surpass my expectations. The perfect blend of emotionally intelligent adoring lover and his own unique attachment trauma that actually is helped by Selene growing to return his affections. He has his own secrets that only grow in interest and intensity as the story progresses. And at every turn we see him striving as hard as Selene does to do what he knows is right.

The Romance
As I mentioned above, I'm not a huge romance reader (yet). I have my own attachment anxieties that make a lot of common romance tropes uncomfortable for me to read. And I'm happy to announce that I was not made uncomfortable a single time, while still having plenty of reader angst. I think Ms. Macdonald's secret to this is that we are reading two people working through their own healing journeys, actively wanting to do so together but also needing to face parts of it distinctly alone. These are two emotionally mature and intelligent characters that are working through difficult, painful things. So when it's hard for them to say something - when it feels like they're passing each other or missing a moment - it makes perfect sense for where they are in their healing, and it never feels like the door is slamming shut forever. Even in their darkest moments of doubt, there's a thread of attachment and love between these two that only gets stronger as time goes on. This is the love story I needed when I was younger and yet the story I wasn't ready to read until now. I saw some of my own needs and emotional learning in Selene and Dorian at different times.

In Summary
I literally requested the ARC because of the cover and the description of Dorian, and I couldn't be happier for that impulsive decision. This story more than delivers on what it promises. It's a love story, it's a suspenseful thriller, it's a cozy story about building home and connection, and it's a story about healing what you didn't even know was wounded. I can't recommend this highly enough and I am on the edge of my seat for the sequel.

“The problem with holding you, Selene,” he says quietly, “is that every time I do, it gets a little harder to let go.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 𝟱 𝓈𝓌𝑜𝑜𝓃𝒾𝓃𝑔 𝓈𝓉𝒶𝓇𝓈 🤍

A romantasy with time-travel and a marriage of convenience ? Sign me in !

After reading a really traumatizing and depressing dark romance trilogy, this book was everything I needed. It carries a certain softness and lightness that is hard to explain. Maybe it’s because humor and playful teasing are always cleverly present, or maybe it’s the undeniable chemistry between Selene and Dorian that made this book an absolute delight to read.

But, considering the traumas of the characters and how vicious and unpredictable the Duke Drakefell can be, you could expect it to be a heavy read. Don’t get me wrong, some moments were really intense and nerve-wracking, and I definitely had tears in my eyes during those because of the realness of the characters’ emotions, the attachment I had for them and because of how relatable they were.

But more than just another love story wrapped in action and twists, this is a story of survivors. People who have lived through deep trauma and are trying to heal. While Dorian is still very wounded by his own past, he never fails to be present for Selene. He walks beside her as she frees herself from her own pain, helping her learn who she is, reveal it, and stand proud in it.
Both of them slowly open up, little by little, and there’s something especially tender and moving about witnessing this healing process they go through together, seeing the gentleness of their bond and the beauty of the love that blooms from it.

« “You don’t have to hide yourself,” he reminds her. “You don’t have to cower or dim your light to make others feel better. You never have to be anything other than yourself. »

When I think about this book, what lingers is a sense of tenderness, hope, something comforting. I don’t see it through the lens of pain or difficulty, but through the healing that emerges from it and the love between the two characters that shines above everything else.
It was so easy to grow attached to Selene and Dorian, but also to the side characters. There’s definitely a found family vibe to this book.

I think Selene is a really intriguing FMC, which I don’t say as often as I'd like. I find it especially interesting that we’re introduced to her at her most vulnerable moment, when she’s being betrayed by her husband.
She’s a relatable character who is deeply wounded by her traumas, and it was beautiful, inspiring, and emotionally resonant to see her work through them, to try to overcome it all, to heal. There are so many lines in the book that felt incredibly real, things I’ve thought or heard myself.
It was beautiful to see her bloom into the strong, self-aware, and compassionate woman she was always meant to be.

It was also so easy to fall in love with Dorian. He’s gentle, pure, and kind. He’s reliable, resourceful, and I loved how present, attentive, patient, and understanding he was with Selene. But he also has this secret side to him, a wounded side that comes from believing he has to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders.
I was genuinely surprised to read about an MMC who lacks self-confidence, isn’t described as physically perfect, and blushes easily.

"Would you believe me if I told you that I think you’re pretty too?”
Dorian tenses, just for a moment. “No,” he says. “But thank you for saying that.”

(This one hurts)

But that doesn’t make him weak in the slightest, or any less of a man, as we see time and time again throughout the book.
I also adored the fact that he can be incredibly charming and is more than capable of taking the lead with Selene when he wants to, his shyness vanishing in a heartbeat… I may or may not have been the one blushing multiple times ! 🙈

The pacing of their connection just felt right. It evolved in such a natural, organic way.
I’m not a fan of slow burns that drag on for too long, and this one didn’t feel like that at all. Every moment between them mattered. Each interaction felt meaningful and important to their growing relationship and was a delight to read.
The chemistry was there from the very start, and it played a huge role in how easy it was to get pulled into the story and to fall in love with both characters.

“Does it hurt when I touch you?” she asks.
He shakes his head. “It only hurts when you don’t.”

The prologue was certainly one of the best I’ve ever read. I was instantly captivated by the story. It was incredibly easy to dive into and get emotionally invested.

I was also very pleasantly surprised by one trope used in the book… which I won’t talk about further to not spoil anything. 🤫

The ending definitely left me wanting more, leaving us on a cliffhanger with a lot of secrets and answers about to be revealed, including about the time travel situation.
I’m so ready to devour the second book and see where Dorian and Selene’s story is headed (please don’t hurt them more 😭) !

4.5 stars rounded up!

I was so grateful to receive an ARC of The Girl Who Fell through Time from the author. It asks the intriguing question of what you would do if you lived the absolute worse day of your life, and then got the chance to make sure it never happens? What happens if it's not just a matter of going left instead of right, but a hundred different decisions you need to make?

First of all, this feels more like a historical romance, one of my favorite genres, than anything else. Except there are gods who can, at least, send people through Time to change their destinies. The culture is also distinct from the 19th century British romances i usually read, with acceptance of different races and sexualities in a way that I'm hard- pressed to find in most countries today. But there are similarities in the way people live and the social class issues.

One of my favorite parts of this book is that although this is a duology and absolutely ended in a way that makes me want more, it doesn't end mid- battle in a way that makes it impossible to wait for book 2. And also while there is a revelation, it avoids the trope that way too many current books in this genre are repeating ad nauseum- the utterly predictable last minute reveal that the girl is fighting on the wrong side of history and her lover is a rebel. I've read that so many times that I can see it coming a mile away. I didn't see it coming here because that trope is thankfully not present, at least in book 1.

Where this book loses a half-star for me, even if it's not evident because Goodreads doesn't do half stars and I usually round up is world-building. It's mostly not necessary because this feels like a historical romance but at the same time, the key event here is Time travel and we know so little about the beings that can make it happen. I want to see more about the belief system and how people bring their faith into regular life. Still, this is a minor quibble in overall what was a can't-put-down, fast read that left me wanting more. I can't wait for part 2!

Thank you to Booksprout and Katherine Macdonald for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A slow-burn, marriage-of-convenience, time-travel romantasy, set in a regency-esque world. —Booksprout description

You had me at Regency-esque world! I generally really enjoy Katherine Macdonald's books, and this one is no exception! My favorite part about this story is that it's as much about the healing process and learning to move on as it is about the romance. And speaking of the romance, Kat nails it yet again! They say first impressions are everything, and Dorian captured my heart immediately! First thing he does when Selene tells him she doesn't want to marry Drakefell, rather than dismiss or mock her, he asks how he can help, even though at this point in the story, he's practically a stranger to her! And that got me intrigued!

I love the way their relationship develops, too. Something I feel alot of Regency writers do is that they try to lean too much into the brooding aspect of Darcy-esque characters that it's often to the point where the love interest comes off as an abusive asshole with very little redeeming qualities, thus not really understanding why Darcy works. Dorian, however, is wonderful! He's quiet and thoughtful, he's just as kind to Selene—and everyone else, for that matter—as she is to him, so that when they start to actually become closer and eventually fall in love, it feels natural! It feels earned! And I think that's beautiful!

And then we get to the ending! Oh my gods, I can't even remember the last time I was this excited for an upcoming book! Let's go!

Also, I love some of the surnames! Duskbriar, Everfrost! Nightbloom was also used in one of my favorite visual novels, so it's fun seeing it here, too!

Overall, another great read from one of my favorite authors!

Review:
Another non stop read through from me for Katherine's books! I can always count on her for deep characters that effortlessly wisk me away into their lives. This regency-style world is lush and grounded but we have the added wondrous element of time travel (for fans of Outlander). It plunges our heroine back one year, right before she marries a scheming man bent on upheaval to the land and its people.

She makes the bold move with this chance to make things right, by proposing to a childhood acquaintance. The bookish, horse loving, gentle, and giving Duke, Dorian. We get tender push and pull dynamics as Selene begins to unravel the seemingly quiet and humble man. But he also bears great weight on his shoulders and harbors a secret pain.

We have a solid driving element of mystery concerning the evil man Selene was supposed to marry and his continued efforts and behind the scenes plans to still proceed with his nefarious acts of treason. The prospect of changing fate and of finding an unexpected love in the process is dramatically compelling. Dorian and Selene are so lovely as they maneuver their secrets, come to trust the other, work together, and fall in love (I love how Katherine writes spice). And oh boy did the third act amp up tension, a ticking clock element, twists, and oodles of suspense!

I can't rave enough on how i love how Katherine writes her mmc's, our Dorian may be soft spoken, a bit shy, but beneath that, he's truly a knight, galvanized by love. I can't wait for book two! A fun, exciting,  and elegantly magical story to get lost in.

First, thank you to Booksprout and Katherine Macdonald for providing me with a free copy of the book for review purposes.

What would you do with a second chance at life? Do everything exactly the same, or try and make yourself a better life? That’s the question Selene Duskbriar is faced with when she falls through time after fleeing for her life. She finds herself a year in the past, just in the nick of time to save herself from her disastrous marriage and murderous husband. First order of business: marry someone else. That person ends up being Dorian Nightbloom.

I cannot overstate how much I loved this book. It has all the romance tropes I love-slow burn, tending each other’s wounds, he reads to her, found family, etc- and the right amount of fantasy to go along with it. The pacing was excellent, which is good because this is the first book in a duology. The ending came at a natural point; it didn’t feel as though it ended randomly just to manufacture a cliffhanger. The only thing keeping me from finishing it in one sitting was the fact that I had to go to bed at some point. I cannot wait for the second book.

What would you do with a second chance? I’d read this book for the first time again.
