A Sacred Holiday. A Vicious Attack. A Family Bonded by Choice and Supernatural Powers.
In the late afternoon of All Hallows Eve, the pregnant widow of a heroic firefighter is viciously assaulted. The attack is attributed to white supremacists, and attorney Mattie Catesdater is hired to seek restitution. Mattie manages to extract sizable damages, including the century-old homestead of the group’s leader—but justice against the patriarchy has a significant price.
An Extensive Web of Evil Plans for revenge are directed not only toward Mattie but also toward members of her multicultural extended family. A clandestine plot threatens the lives of their teenage daughters. Mattie and family must call upon their considerable paranormal powers and tribal strength to unmask the darkness hiding in the foothills of the Rockies.
The Power of the Matriarch This strong matriarchal family is composed of a variety of individuals bound sometimes by blood and sometimes by trust based on experience. They reject the conventions of patriarchy but embrace the strength of a tribal sanctuary. Using both normal and paranormal abilities, they demonstrate extraordinary capabilities for preserving their land, protecting their own, and revealing seditious secrets.
Shadows on Samhainis the gripping first installment of a four-part mystery series crafted around the sacred Celtic holidays.
Natalia Malveaux, a medium and witch, crosses paths with Jamie Daly, an Irish solicitor, in her hometown of New Orleans. Both are descendents of the original Coven of Sisters and their destiny is to return to Ireland and gather once again to restore the balance of magic. Haunted by the troublesome ghost of Siobhan Briody, an original member of the coven, the two embark toward an uncertain destiny.
This was a fun, short read. It is a plot driven story that has a very interesting premise. I enjoyed the generational magic and the destiny trope. Siobhan was my favorite character. She's feisty, stubborn, and a bit of a menace. Her matchmaking attempts and meddling antics lent some comedic relief to the story.
I also liked Erin. She's got big sis vibes and I thought they were perfect. Jamie needs a firm hand and she's there to tell him what he needs to hear. I really enjoyed watching her and Natalia bond and become close.
Natalia and Jamie were a sweet pair. I liked how they balanced each other. Jamie was used to flings, not relationships, so I appreciated the effort he put in to establish a relationship with Natalia's loved ones and how he treated her with respect. Natalia learned to loosen up a bit and step away from her business for a while so she can actually live her life.
The book had some mystery and tension to it. Siobhan is leading Natty and Jamie home for The Return, but nothing is known about what that means.
The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. We know that there are eight descendents that need to reunite for The Return. Erin and Natalia are the first, but six more need to be found. I'm looking forward to continuing the series and meeting the other descendents!
I got this book as an ARC through Goodreads/the publisher.
It was a rough start to get me into the book, but once it got into the mystery part, it became much more interesting. Some of the chapters were a little too much skipping between the timelines, different families, and plotlines with the characters. When I was going through the pages, I discovered the ebook pages were in roman numerals, which, no offense, I hated to go back to see where I wanted to make sure something was, and I couldn't see which page something was on since I don't think in roman numerals. Overall, the plot became more solid as the story went on. I wish the pages weren't in Roman numerals and the start was a little less rough, but overall it was a pretty solid mystery. The paranormal aspect is definitely what sold me on ea ding, since I love my paranormal books.
This was a really fun read, I was a bit confused at the beginning of the book due to unique style but really enjoyed the middle and end and am exciting to read the next books in this series
