A reclusive songwriter. A sassy intruder. A deadly family feud…

I learned a hard lesson as a boy: trust no one. Especially not family. Forced to give up my music, I fled from their cruelty years ago. Now I write lyrics from behind a mask of darkness. In seclusion—and hiding a painful secret.

When sultry Mia Bennett shows up at my woodland sanctuary, all my instincts start screaming. Is she a spy for my family? A turncoat? Why is she really here?

Yet, somehow, despite my misgivings, Mia breaks down the walls and makes me feel alive again. She gives me the courage to just be me.

Then tragedy strikes, and a series of suspicious events forces me to confront my past.

But I’m no longer the wounded boy who ran. This time, I’m not backing down. This time, they’ve gone too far.

Mia’s life is on the line, and I’m the only one who can save her.

I’ve already paid the price for fame.

Now I am about to learn the cost of love.

Having read many of author Leslie Georgeson’s books, I knew I would get an unusual hero. Here, I got one who thought himself to be a freak, was actually called so by his family, but was, in reality, quite striking in his looks and talent. Unique.

Zeke ran away at the age of sixteen when his family wanted to take advantage of his talent, to be swallowed in the world of obscurity. Until one day, a strong woman, Mia, came knocking on his door. Something fluttered in his heart when his lips tumultuously curved into a smile.

The romance was tender, and I liked their ongoing chemistry. The story had its share of suspense when dead bodies and murders popped up in scenes. I liked how the author weaved mystery and intrigue in what essentially was a love story.

The author’s sensitivity in taking a young boy’s tender mind, broken many times by the family, and finding a home with his teacher and later on with Mia was well shown. The writing showed me Zeke’s life as he battled with his insecurities to rise beyond it.

Being nitpicky, I wanted stronger dialogues, though I had to admit if the author had written stronger steamy scenes, I would have gone up in flames.

The story was a journey of finding oneself, along with confidence and love, and accepting the physical aspects that were different from others. Being a freak was slowly transformed into being freakily brilliant down the pages.

Overall, a sweet read where suspense foreshadowed the twists galore and made the book an entertaining read.

This is a really unusual story with some memorable characters. I was not familiar with the term heterochromia, although I had an aunt with it. It’s having eyes of two different colors and it’s not terribly common, but Leslie Georgeson takes this concept and turns it into something entirely unexpected. Instead of just affecting eye color, Zeke has an extreme case that has affected his skin color and hair color as well. It makes for a striking look, and as a result, he feels like a freak. It doesn’t help that his parents have always treated him as one.

Mia is only the second person in Zeke’s life who hasn’t looked at him like there’s something wrong with him. She finds him breath-taking and serves as a real boost to his self-confidence. But every story needs a conflict, so aside from the psychological barriers that he brings to this relationship with his inability to trust people, Zeke’s family is truly horrific. They are actual villains. And it becomes clear that they are willing to stop at nothing to get what they want from Zeke.

There are some very unexpected plot twists along the way, lots of tension, and life-or-death stakes. There are some surprising new allies and when Zeke understands the extent of the depravity of his family, he’s especially glad to have little to do with them.

The pacing is good and the story never drags nor feels rushed. The main characters of Mia and Zeke are well-developed and complex, while secondary characters are lacking nuance. This is fine because the story is not really about the secondary characters. This book is about Mia and Zeke, and particularly Zeke’s journey to self-acceptance and love. Like any good story, he has to overcome obstacles, and this makes their love even stronger in the end.

This is not the YA (Young Adult) or rock star romance I was expecting. Nor would I label it as mystery/suspense although there were twists and turns that I did not see coming (and I’m rarely surprised by a ‘romance’ novel). Zeke is a fascinating mix of mature and needy (and talented). The author does a fantastic job building the chemistry between the characters (and not getting bogged down in multiple long sex scenes). There was a bit of repetition and telling rather than showing in the first half (Zeke’s past life and trust issues), and the action picked up in the second (and I couldn’t put it down as it approached the climax). There were no complex ‘bad guys/girls’ in this one; the bad were pure evil. This was an unusual read that I really enjoyed. 4.5 Stars.

Yeesh!

Started out ok. Was intrigued enough to find out more. But the last half of the book went downhill fast and was seriously unbelievable! I Skipped a few chapters just to get to the end. Very juvenile book.

Freak really held my attention. I read it in two sittings, with the break being there only because I had to go to bed and snooze, or I would have been up all night! It drew me in and grabbed me. There are some serious highs and lows to be had, with me even getting close to teary eyed at one point.

The book is written from the alternating point of view of Mia and Zeke. We first meet Zeke as a child, struggling with a lack of love and acceptance from his family. He is a troubled child, who grows up to be an isolated adult who struggles to trust others. When we first meet Mia, she is a recent college graduate working in a job she hates, for a boss she loathes, hoping to find a better opportunity. But when circumstance introduces Mia and Zeke, things suddenly look up for the both of them.

Zeke is a young man with quite a convoluted past, which we are introduced to in stages as the story progresses. Leslie Georgeson does a great job of weaving his history throughout the book. His family background is quite dark and unhappy, and we see it through his eyes as he shares different memories with us. He is quite sombre to start with and struggles with confusion and insecurities throughout the book, but as soon as he meets Mia things start to brighten for him.

Mia is a strong woman. Right from the start, we see that she has a backbone and isn’t afraid to stand up for herself. (This comes in handy for her as she is dealing with all of the things that are put in the path of her and Zeke.) But she is also very likeable. The interaction with her and Zeke flows really well and I enjoyed the two of them together.

Quite a lot of time is given over in Freak to Zeke’s family. And what an unlikeable bunch they are! It becomes apparent really early on just why Zeke struggles with dark memories from his childhood, and why he wants nothing to do with his family. The descriptions and interactions with his family are great – I was totally on Zeke’s side against them. The mental image I have of his father and brother are so clear that I felt myself reacting when they were ‘around’, as they are both obnoxious (that is probably a bit too polite). And his mother is horrid! But luckily for Zeke he did have one positive adult in his life, and that relationship is a nice soft spot amongst the nastiness.

From the number of warnings I’ve put on this review it probably sounds like it will be loaded down with bad language and violence, but it’s really not. I always like to add the ‘language’ warning if there is cursing, as it simply isn’t everyone’s cup of tea (I’m not a fan of excessive use), and there is some ‘language’ to be had in this book. But it didn’t bother me at all. And the violence warning is necessary, as there is definitely a violent element to Freak. But Leslie Georgeson actually handled it quite gently, for what it was.

There was one section towards the end where it built up to the point that I felt the need to put the book down for a few minutes before proceeding. The emotion of the lead up to it had me preparing myself for what I thought was going to be a pretty hard to read section, so I chose to walk away for a minute first (ok, I didn’t really walk anywhere – I had a cuddle session with my dog right where I was on the couch – but you know what I mean). However, when I returned to reading the book, I found that it wasn’t heavy at all. (I actually felt that it was a little too gentle, for what should have been a severely traumatic event). So, while all of these elements are part of the book, I didn’t find that it became too heavy or grisly at any point.

I gave this book 4 thumbs up, as I really enjoyed it. I probably would have gone the whole way with 5 thumbs up, except that towards the end Freak reached a crescendo point where everything seemed to happen at all once and it got really rushed. I had no trouble understanding and keeping up with it all, but it felt like a little of the depth of the story got swept away with the speed of it. However, if some parts of that section of the book had gone the other way and detailed it all too much, I’d probably be saying that it had been too heavy and dark and I wished that it hadn’t been so specific! So, for the most part, it was probably better to do it this way.

Thank you to the author, Leslie Georgeson, along with Xpresso Book Tours, for my copy of the book in return for an honest review.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy of "FREAK" WOW!!!!!! What an amazing job Leslie Georgeson does writing this unique interesting captivating book with angst, abuse, murder, secrets revealed, jealousy, betrayal, twists that make for a page turner you can't put down.
Zeke Strong comes from a family that Fame is their birthright music flows through their veins but any flaws are unaccepted he was born with a congenital heterochroma two different colored eyes, one side of his body skin is darker than the other, he feels like a freak & his parents also treat him like one he's been abused by them.
Zeke's family are horrible people that'll stop at nothing to get what they want from him he takes off for 9yrs creating songs for other artists his family is back & they want something from him so his brother sends Mia Bennett to persuade him he's drawn to her immediately but he's not entirely sure he can trust her because of his family.
Mia makes Zeke feel alive for the first time in his life she accepts him for he is, she inspires his new music from his heart but he's worried because theirs something dark & twisted going on in his home he doesn't know who to trust.
I definitely recommend to get this amazingly well written book with fantastic characters that make for an excellent read it won't disappoint so well written and a must have book for sure I thoroughly enjoyed this unique story very emotional at times but an awesome story you don't want to miss getting.

I felt so bad the way Zeke was treated most of his life, he was called a freak by his family because he was born with congenital heterochroma. He had a teacher that believed in him and helped him to be a better person. His father was terrible and Zeke became the reclusive songwriter so he wouldn’t have to meet anyone with the way he looked. His brother tried to pull a fast one on Zeke by sending Mia to him but it backfired because they fell for each other. Then there were other people looking for Zeke too, but it was good. His family was very unpredictable in what they did, I cried for what was happening. Oh this a great book, Leslie has done it again!

Zeke has a hereditary characteristic called heterochromia. He has different colored eyes and one side of his body is darker than the other. He has written hit songs for a number of artists. He is a recluse because he feels people would not accept him because of his looks. He was abused as a youth by his parents. They made him feel not wanted. Zeke finds friendship and love with Mia. Murder, kidnapping, and a secret revealed. This novel had me enthralled from the beginning. It was very hard to put it down.

This is book one in the Something Real series. Wow, what an amazing start to a series. This is Zeke and Mia's story and what a fantastic adventure it makes. I loved reading this book and getting to know each and every character that plays a part in Zeke and Mia's journey. Let me tell you, this story kept me on my toes and my emotions on high alert. With a family where perfection is the standard, if don't meet those standards, it's impossible to fit in. If you have something they want or can use, they will take it. I am hooked and look forward to the next story un the series. Enjoy!

I wish I could keep clicking and adding more stars. What a book. Such abuse by some very twisted people who hide their sins behind their fame. Yet call themselves "family." A life of lies, pain and degradation. This author has written a story that will stay with you long after you close the book. Such a gripping read, you'll find your thoughts drifting back to it again and again. Leslie Georgeson is a phenomenal author and I am looking forward to reading more from her.

Excellent story
The story is excellent, unpredictable between the beginning and the end. I loved the characters, Zeke's slow revelation, his release from everything he's been through thanks to Mia who had been sent for information, but then stays with him.
Aside from the couple, most of the characters are all twisted for reasons that seem disproportionate, but that's also what strengthens the bond between Mia and Zeke.

Emotional, heart wrenching, brutal. I mean I ran the gamut with this one. SO exquisitely written and it is brutal at times but my gosh so good! I LOVE LOVE Zeke and Mia. I honestly can say I want more of him! Uniquely different and utterly gorgeous! Talented and stunning! To be accepted just the way you are is tremendously satisfying! When is the next book coming?

I became emotionally invested in this story of a young man tormented from the beginning having been born with a unique characteristic. It was a beautifully crafted story told with so much heart that the story came alive for me.

So glad I decided to finally read this powerful story. Unfortunately there are too many parents like in this story, some even worse. The power of a teacher's influence she never be under estimated either. Love is truly the power not given enough credit. This author .manages the tension well, but the foreshadowing may have been too much in the loss of one. Super building of suspense.

*****Freak by Leslie Georgeson: sooo good!
Mia/Zeke. OMG — this book! This book sucked me in! With the poetic writing and the feels. The emotion, the injustice, the crazy. Unbelievable horrors and secrets. The heat and love. The genuine realness that was emotional, touching, sweet. Lots of twists and turns, and a beautiful HEA. I couldn’t put it down!

I found myself enjoying this book, but got a little bored in the middle. Then all of a sudden the action picked back up and my interest kicked up as well. I did feel like the writing style changed some at the end of the book. It felt more like we were being told the story instead of living it.

I love this book and the Popov Bratva series. It's easy to get involved with the families. As soon as I finished this one, I started the next in the series. Imaginative, yet realistic portrayals of what happens in some families.

Mia was sent by her boss to find the songwriter who wanted to keep his identity hidden from the world. Meeting Zeke she immediately realized he was extraordinary, the man and his talent. Having to make up a story to get near him in order to keep her job, she did not realize the effect it would have on him to learn the truth. But Zeke was not ready to let her go, even though she lied to him, and he offered her a job. Working together each day, brought them closer and she learned some of his secrets and the emotions he kept hidden for so long. Will they have a chance or will the secrets of his past torn them apart?

Good

I'm so iffy with this author!
I like her stories but the writing gets repetitive and long winded.
I was ready for the story to wrap up when I realized I was at 20%.
Trudging through some mundane bits, the mystery of Zeke starts to really unfold.
Over all the story is good. I am interested in the next book.
I appreciate that her books are interconnected standalones without a cliffhanger.
Though I might try, it is highly unlikely I will ever finish any of her series'. The pace gets to me every time.

Definitely Different

I wasn't expecting half of what was in this book. Freak is not your usual rock star book, in fact I don't think that is the correct genre, but no matter, the story was unique. Zeke was an amazing character, a recluse and song writing savant however that's not what makes him special. Mia is originally sent to meet Zeke for nefarious purposes but a tidal wave of secrets, lies and betrayal soon follow. If you like genre mash-ups then give this one a try
