Kommissar Dupin #2

Bretonische Brandung

Rate this book

Commissaire Georges Dupin is the investigator for the National Police in Brittany. In Murder on Brittany Shores, he finds himself on the Glenan Islands, an archipelago ten miles off the coast, after three male bodies are found in the water. As their identities are discovered, the case takes on even more importance as they were all well-to-do, important businessmen. And it soon becomes apparent they weren’t the victims of some tragic accident.
Dupin hasn’t gotten any nicer since the first book in the series. A prickly sort, dependent on caffeine, he doesn’t endear himself to his superior, his underlings or the inhabitants of St. Nicholas. He relies on Nolwenn, who reminds me of Signorina Electra in the Guido Brunetti series. But as the book goes on, I did begin to see chinks in his armor, as with the joy he feels when watching dolphins swim alongside a boat.
This is a complicated plot with multiple suspects and motives, including opposition to a proposed development and deep sea treasure hunting. There’s a closed room element to the story, harkening back to the golden age of detective stories. I appreciated the low key ending.
Bannalec has the ability to place you firmly in the scene. The book is filled with wonderful descriptions of the local food, tales of the numerous boats sunk and the white sand beaches.
I recommend this for fans of Donna Leon and Martin Walker.
This is a great series to listen to. I’m a big fan of Jean Brassard as the narrator.

(2´5 estrellas)

Quite a change from the first Dupin murder investigation centered on art. Dupin's methods and personality are well defined and he continues to follow his wants and needs, one of which is caffeine. When he has to leave his usual cafes and routines the quality of coffee is a thing he cannot rely on. There is a case waiting to be solved off the Brittany coast where bodies have been found washed up on the shores of one of the Glenan Islands. Boats are not Dupin's favorite mode of transportation, but he has to admit this is the fastest and most efficient way to get there vs driving to airport and catching a helicopter ride. It provides a chuckle now and then.
The number of people who had reason to kill several well known men add to complexity of investigation. It is interesting to a point, but not as interesting as the first book. The description of the waters and land provide a rich reading experience. I look forward to the third book available in English next year. There were some translation mistakes, but it wasn't too distracting.

Dupin's Coping Skills?:
"This whole investigation, the way it was going, the whole day in itself - it was ridiculous. Strangely topsy-turvy. Dupin was absolutely fed up."
"It seemed absolutely surreal to him now - in the spot where he had eaten the best lobster of his life earlier in an almost holiday atmosphere, a capital murder had taken place."
"He had never had a murder case to solve where there were so many motives."

Post Publication Edit: Yes, I am forgetful! I do have book #3 ready for me to pick up at the library when I take my Friday train ride downtown. And then...the wait for book #4 in 2019.

(3/4 confermato)

Enter Dupins 2nd adventure as novelised by Jean-Luc Bannalec, this time he gets send to a group of islands before the coast of Brittany as three people have been found on the beach of an uninhabited island. This is a story about development of the sacred Brittany nature into hotels for the better monitary enhanced people. That and old history is the core of this police story as performed by Dupin and his people.
Dupin does need good espresso to work his magic and finds his result to be a sad story. And yet the man gets to do his job in a beautifull surroundings and the love of this author really shines through the pages of his books. These books are excellent mysteries and giving Brittany the love it deserves, it is a very beautifull place. At the same time you get to learn about the culture of Brittany and its inhabitants that are Brittany and for their feeling not French, so Dupin remains that commisioner from Paris even if at this point he has been in Brittany for five years. (one of hi friends has been there for twenty and still not seen as an inhabitant). This attitude also provides for the humour in the story.

This series of Dupin has been filmed by the German television in 1,5 hour long TV movies, they do follow the general storylines and show the beautifull scenery, but some of the storylines are left out and the TV movie has Dupin and his girlfriend trying to maintain a relationship which does not happen in the book. I do enjoy the German movies but enjoy the more detailed books.

The second in the series following Commissaire Dupin of Concarneau although this novel is set on the Glenan , a group of small islands just off the coast.
The author's love of the area comes through strongly once again in his descriptions of the scenery and the local food.
Commissaire Dupin's individualistic style of investigating is once more apparent to the frustration of superiors and subordinates alike.
I am not sure that this case was as solvable for the reader as the previous one but again, when explained, everything seemed logical.
I didnt find this story as easy to follow as the previous one and I fear , at one stage, I had a couple of the characters mixed.
I pleasant story but not quite as good as the first.

I found it hard to get into this book. Also I was bothered by the lack of good proof reading of this book as I encountered missing words, words missing the s on the end, and run together words! The time frame of the story and the amount accomplished in each of the three days was troublesome. As for the ending.....not a satisfying one.

It is apparent that the author loves the Brittany area. If this were a travelogue, I would have oohed and aahed at the descriptions of the area. It does sound enchanting.

The Dupin character I could not find myself liking in any manner of speaking. Perhaps his positive attributes are too subtle for me to grasp.

Nekad, lasot kādu detektīvromānu, nebiju googlējusi vietu, kur tas norisinās 🫣 Bet te, jau no pirmajām lapām, tie dabas apraksti bija TĀDI, ka man vnk vajadzēja redzēt 😅 Glēnanas salas (Glénan Islands) Francijas rietumu piekrastē ir kaut kas nereāli skaists 🏝️ ko kādreiz gribētos redzēt savām acīm 😏

Bet visā šajā skaistumā, protams, parādās 3 līķi 😅 ko izskalo okeāns. Sākumā tiek domāts, ka nelaimes gadījums, pēcāk pavedieni ved uz to, ka tomēr labi pārdomāta un aukstasinīga skepkavība 🩸 Un tad sākas izmeklēšana, kas ved krustu šķērsu. Liek iepazīt salas un to mazliet jocīgos iedzīvotājus 🤭 Galvenajā lomā - no Parīzes aizbraukušais komisārs Dipēns.

Kopumā man patika, vien kkur pret vidu šķita, ka stāsts sāk vilkties, prasījās tomēr vairāk spriedzes un dinamikas. Taču visu atspēkoja senie salas noslēpumi un skumjais atrisinājums beigās 💔

Kopā par komisāru Dipēnu esot iznākušas jau 13(!) grāmatas un pēc tām uzņemts TV seriāls, ko man gribētos redzēt tās dabas dēļ 😏🙌

This took me forever to read, so many errors and typos and odd phrasing, hard to know why that was. I probably would have given it a better rating otherwise.

Způsob vyprávění působí poeticky a lehce oddechově. Tato série, má zatím mírně stoupající tendenci, takže i další díl si ráda přečtu.

I am in love with this series and WANT them all to be translated to English! Dupin is a detective after my own heart, firmly in the tradition of Donna Leon's Brunetti or even Simenon's classic Maigret. This installment is a compelling mystery set in the Glenan archipelago (which I am now obsessed with and want to visit so badly). Dupin must solve a baffling triple murder in this remote environment where the weather can derail things in a heartbeat and an insular islander mentality causes the investigation to constantly re-evaluate relationships and who to trust/not trust. The mystery has many twists and turns, but for me, that is secondary. So much of the book is just listening to Dupin's inner narrative, and "watching" him interact with people and present a blustering, officious front, while inside, he's dying for a cozy coffee from his favorite cafe or agonizing over the fact that he STILL hasn't called his fractious mother back.

Would've been 4 stars but I didn't like the ending. This book was more driven by funny characters and their mutual connections and relationships than plot, at least that's how I felt while reading. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable, easy read.

This is the second in the series of murder mysteries set in Brittany featuring the irascible Commissaire Georges Dupin, and it seemed the next best thing to a trip to France. Dupin has been in the picturesque Breton village of Concarneau for four years now, after his unwanted transfer from Paris, and is feeling decidedly more at home. (The local food and drink have certainly helped him acclimate, and he is gathering a trusted team of officers around him.) His new case takes him to the archipelago of small islands 10 miles off the coast, where three unidentified bodies have washed ashore. It seems at first to be a straightforward boating mishap, the result of a recent storm, but it doesn’t take much digging to establish that foul play was involved and this is murder. A very enjoyable blend of ingenious plotting, delightful travelogue (it really made me want to visit), and further establishing Dupin’s character: thorough police work with bolts of insight, requires a constant, copious infusion of caffeine, and hates to set foot on a boat, though his work in Brittany requires it often. I loved that the islands he was writing about actually exist, and I found myself Googling often to get a glimpse of the Caribbean-like beaches, the lighthouses and forts, and the world-famous sailing and diving schools that exist there. There were red herrings aplenty, with plot threads including treasure hunting (so many ships wrecked over centuries by the suddenly treacherous weather and rocky waters), greedy developers, corrupt officials, etc. I am sure to be visiting Brittany again soon with Dupin!

I spun this book out , just reading a little each day because I did not want to leave Brittany and , if I thought hard enough I could sit next to the coffee addicted Dupin and look across at the Concarneau sun dial or imagine the cerulean seas off the Glenan Isles - which I feel disgusted with myself for never bothering to visit when I could.
The characters continue to develop , French bureaucracy continued to baffle and delight in equal measure, and the food is amazing. The plot is internecine , property developers , sunk ships and several dead ends to be navigated but the setting and dialogue delight.
