Let me begin this review with, “I don’t typically review books.” I’m not the avid reader I once was, nor am I a literary critic, by profession or hobby. I enjoy reading good, wholesome books, and I make no apology for this. Also, just to be upfront, I was gifted this book in the hopes I would write a honest review.

With the preliminaries out of the way, I can honestly say I wholeheartedly enjoyed this book! I relish a book that keeps me captivated: by the story line, tempo, sentence structure, and vocabulary (I’m a bit of a word geek, so the use of good, strong vocabulary thrills my heart just a bit). This book checks off all of those boxes. Add to that the odd historical fact (or more) that I didn’t know, and an author can grab this gal’s attention easily. It helps the case that this story is one of the most gentle and pure romances I’ve ever read.

I can say too much at times, so I will leave this here. I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone; BUT if you enjoy a VERY well researched historical fiction, set in the time of the Civil War, I would highly recommend you take some time to read this. I am anticipating great success for this author, and anxiously awaiting any new books published by her.

This was such a great story! It's very rare to find a story about the War Between the States that actually portrays the Confederacy accurately, and this story does just that.

The characters were great! Well, most of them. There was one Yankee that was perfectly horrid. But other than him, I loved each and every character in the story. And I was so worried about some particular ones. I've seen what this author is capable of doing to her poor readers' hearts

The romance was just about the perfect amount for me. I'm quite picky on what I like in a romance story, and the author did it just the way I like it. And the interactions between Ephraim and Mariah were so hilarious at times!

Somehow, I wasn't already familiar with the Bible smuggling aspect of the war that is included in the story, and that added so much to the story.

I could keep going and going, but I'll sum it up by saying that this was a great story and I look forward to reading it Christmas after Christmas!

Rest beside the weary road DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The Author did a great job of creating a plot that kept the reader engaged and wanting to read more, I loved all the characters. And the fact that it was set during Christmas time was just the cherry on top. Ephraim is probably my favorite. The author has constructed his character in such a way that you instantly feel a connection to him, "Form no relationships, risk no loss".... this phrase has become my absolute favorite of the book. It once again draws the reader to a deeper connection to Ephraim. The plot was very well crafted, keeping the book entertaining and thoughtful, the touches of humor that were added throughout were always apropos to the character/situation at hand. The historical accuracy is another feather in the author's cap, as I have found that it is rare to find such detail in "Historical" Fiction. I highly recommend this book to everyone and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

I was given a free copy of this book and asked to read it and give an honest evaluation. That being said, I love to read books. There is nothing worse than reading a book that is dry and boring.
This book is NOT one of those. I figured the book would be a girly romantic type book which I do not read. I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It held my attention. I would recommend this book to anybody. It is a wholesome, refreshing book. Take the time to read this book.

Set during the Civil War, this story shares some aspects that even I hadn’t heard of before. I appreciate the author’s notes in the back about what parts were real and what weren’t. It was interesting to learn about smuggling Bibles and other things.
While I had a hard time connecting with the characters, and I’m still wondering how old the boys were since they were referred to as children but one was in the scouts and one wasn’t but their ages were never shared. It was a good story with a good message about trusting and resting even when life is hard.
I disliked the fact that nearly every one of the Union soldiers was portrayed as horrible, angry, bullies. It just felt stereotypical. If a book is from the southern perspective, the north are usually awful, if it’s from the northern perspective, the southerners are usually terrible.

There was more blood and talk of blood and wounds and injuries than I had expected. Nothing was very gory or detailed, but if anyone who is sensitive to that sort of thing take note.

I don’t think I’ve read a book set during the American Civil War from a confederate standpoint (except for Gone with the Wind) so that was unique. I also liked the integration of the hymn with the story. This one had very little romance (I would say the least of the series) but it did have some excitement and tense moments so that was interesting. I also liked how they kept Christmas even during wartime.

“The greatest battles are often fought within the soul. But the Almighty never intended for us to fight them alone.”

Thus begins Rest Beside the Weary Road by A.M. Watson, a historical tale of battle, faith, and perseverance. The War Between States is raging, tensions are mounting, and battles lurk at every turn. Caught in the turbulence and uncertainty are main characters Mariah and Ephraim, who both wonder if the upcoming Christmas will contain any peace in a land so tattered and frail.

Rich in historical details, Watson captures two Southerners' perspectives while treating readers to a delicate balance of the grim realities of war and the desperate faith experienced by those watching their nation be torn apart. Mariah, a preacher's daughter, and Ephraim, a scout, experience the entire gamut of emotions that readers feel right alongside them.

I particularly enjoyed how Watson delicately handled both the pain of losing family as well as the horrors of war. The readers knows what's happening, but there is no gore or unnecessary description. The focus of peace in the midst of the storm is also forefront in this book, as are the themes of courage and relying on the Lord.

Watson also delivers a delightful cast of characters that are immediately endearing. Dear Ephraim is such a wounded soul, and Watson really did his character arc justice. Then we have Mariah, who faces her own personal battle. The secondary characters range from a young orphan, a nosy friend, and Mariah's family, who exhibit resilience and determination in the face of danger and the odious fiends that plague both Mariah's family and Ephraim.

The found family thread is sweet, the faith a gentle reminder of Who is in control, and the danger enough to make you sit upright and wonder if characters will endure capture, battle, and destruction. The reader is also reminded that God can provide peace in any circumstance, something that will resonate with many.

Sensitive readers should note that battle, its casualties, and being on the battlefield are tastefully discussed. Blood and lost limbs are mentioned on more than one occasion, a man is unjustly arrested, and hanging is mentioned as well.

If you are looking for an engaging historical novel with light romance and the tropes enemies-to-more, found family, brotherhood, and faith, I recommend Rest Beside the Weary Road.

After opening many books this year, reading three chapters only to have to put them down for being filled with language, lacking an engaging plot, or simply being incomprehensible. I was thrilled to open this book and find I couldn’t put it down!!

The setting was uniquely chosen. The plot was perfectly paced. It was totally clean and included a sweet, very light romance thread. If you enjoy historical fiction with lovely tidbits of little-known historical facts, relatable characters, and clean romance… this is a book for you!

The fiery nature of Mariah was relatable and fun. She didn’t allow fear to trample down her faith. Even during trying times she remained stubborn and full of personality. She’s a character you’ll fall in love with and want to see what she can overcome!

The walls that Ephraim guarded himself with resonated with me. Most of us have tried to guard ourselves in this manner. This made him a character you wanted to encourage and sympathize with. It was exciting to see him grow and watch those walls fall away!

All in all, pick it up. Read it. Allow the characters a place in your heart. This will be one of the best novellas you pick up.

For starters, it was unique to see the war from a confederate's perspective. I wasn't nieve to the wrong perpetrated on both sides, but those Yanks (Grr... I want to punch their faces 😤😭 for what they did to the Taylor's.)

The author had an incredible cast of characters. I immediately fell in love with Mariah's spunk and spirit. And her ready retorts 👏🏻. And the southern gentleman McCammon "I think this belongs to you..." 🫢😂. Ephraim was so brusque, but it was so sweet to see him try so hard, "not" to like or love others.

The imagery that the author weaved was incredible. My heart was pounding so many times wondering if these characters I 'd come to love were going to make it. The last scene between Ephriam and the Yank Scouts was my absolute favorite ❤️🥲.

The romance was just right, not too much nor too little. The faith themes encouraged me. What a gift of peace we've been given, but we must realize that it doesn't come from without, but from Christ in us.

CW (only for younger readers): semi-described wounds, blood

My Rating/ Age Recommendation:
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 (5 out of 5 stars)/ 18+ (just due to the slightly more graphic content that comes with war)

This book was so good. I haven't felt so invested in the fictional character's lives for quite a while, as with Mariah and Ephriam. Rest, Beyond the Weary Road is definitely a Christmas read one shouldn't miss out on.

I received a complimentary ARC, but all opinions expressed are my own.

Rest Beside The Weary Road

This book was nothing short of amazing! I love history but I also love a good fictional romance, A. M. Watson did a phenomenal job tying the two together with accurate historical details intertwining with the characters storylines. The suspense and vivid details made this story truly come alive and I couldn’t put it down!

This is an action packed, high stakes story featuring the transport of Bibles into the Confederacy after mail across the Mason-Dixon line was banned by the Union during the American Civil War. FMC Mariah Taylor, and her entire family, including her preacher father, are incredibly brave! MMC Ephraim (Love his name!) is doing special ops work, and meets Mariah when he has to hide in her house. He acts like he can't care for others, but Mariah helps his soft heart show through!

4.5 stars (4/10 hearts). First of all, can we admire the cover?? I just adore it. Thanks.

I knew this story was about the American Civil War, and I was very curious to see how it would be handled. While I don't really side with the characters as far as the war goes, and I still have a lot of research I want to do, I was impressed with how this story handled the issue. My favourite part was how Mariah explored the whole "facing danger for the right" struggle, which is one I totally relate to. The romance was super sweet, and all the "good" characters quite nice. I enjoyed the humour, too; and one of my favourite Christmas carols was woven in so well! A delightful little Christmas read :)

*I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.*

Excited to read more of this authors work in the future! This book was well written and hard to put down. I love that the story of Christ’s birth was intertwined in the midst of war. I was not aware of the Bible smuggling efforts during the civil war and enjoyed learning something new.

Have you ever read a novelette that makes you think differently or reminds you of something not so new?
That’s what happened to me.
The author tells this story to us through a brave, somewhat daring, perspective from “the other side” of war. Through a young woman and young man we see how lives are changed, for the good and bad, by and through this war.

I was reminded there is a humanity on both sides of the bullet…no matter the differences between them. Each has a family, some the same faith…the same Lord. The author brought out these human feelings through a natural phenomenon which, Ironically, I had personally witnessed only weeks before.

The author also reminded me there is one day in the year that also brings out the humanity within us, even in wartime. It was by an act of one soldier tossing a small pouch to another that provided “a piece”of comfort. which was shared with another whom also was in need of peace at Christmas time. It has been told that, in WWI , enemies sang Christmas Carols together from the trenches.

I encourage you to read through this thoughtful story yourself. See if it changes the way you see others and how similar you may be instead of how you differ ….that would be quite a concept now days.

This story came out at such a good time for me! The theme is beautiful and encouraging.
The War Between the States is a time period that has had a special place in my heart for years, and the author did such a good job representing it in a balanced way. She clearly put a lot of effort into her research, and I really enjoyed the historical note at the end.
Not only was the historical setting so well done, but the characters were great! Their struggles were so genuine and relatable, and it was neat seeing those very struggles and hardships bring them together. Also, from someone who is not really into the romance genre, this one had just the perfect amount, and it was so clean and sweet.
If you love history or you are going through a difficult time this Christmas and could use some extra encouragement, I highly recommend this book!

Note: I was given a copy of this book to review, with no expectations. All of the views expressed are my own.

If you love good, clean, historical fiction then you must read this book!

I found myself drawn back to the uncertainty of 1862 as the South struggled with not only a lack of material things but also the absence of loved ones, many of whom would never return.

Mariah made me smile as I saw myself in her spunky stubbornness tempered by her soft heart. Her desire to trust God, even while she struggles with questioning His motives, rings so true to modern day living. You truly can sense the war within her as she battles to make sense of it all.

Ephraim is struggling to maintain an outward appearance of strength and indifference, yet the reader can see he longs to be able to let others into his heart. I wanted to somehow let him know that is okay to be strong, but that we all need others in our lives as well.

The historical parts of the book are well portrayed. I enjoyed the attention to accuracy as I learned a fact about the war that is rarely brought to light, as well as one particular fact that was just plain "cool".

There is a budding romance carried throughout the book. I enjoyed the fact that it was sweet, innocent, clean and godly. This is often a rare find, even in the world of Christian authors.

The author excelled at bringing to light a lesser known stanza to a well known carol and weaving it into the story.

I anxiously await future books from this author, and I hope that it might include a spinoff series of the characters in this book. I must know more!!
