Riftside #1

I wanted to be an adventurer. I ended up the pack mule for a psychopathic hammer.

My name is Ash. I’m a scavenger, a blacksmith’s apprentice, and, according to the voice in my head, a "calcium-based biped with poor taste in pillows."

All I wanted was to clear my family’s debt and secure a future in Dawnwatch, the frontier town guarding the rift. Maybe even become an adventurer. But when a dungeon run went wrong, I didn’t just find loot. I found the motherload. A Soul Gem worth a kingdom.

Instead of doing the smart thing and selling the gem, I forged it into a powerful Soul Weapon, one which could make me into something far greater than I’d ever thought possible.

Only, I ended up with Roq. A modified smith’s hammer. He can crush armor, heal my wounds, and hit harder than a runaway horse. In some ways he is the ultimate weapon.

But he’s also a complete diva who demands blood sacrifices, screams about his magnificence, and refuses to sleep on anything less than satin.

Now, I have to find a way to slay enough monsters to keep him fed and become strong enough to protect those I care about.

All while arguing with a tool that thinks he’s the main character.

“Excuse you? 'Thinks' he is the main character? I AM THE MAIN CHARACTER! You are merely a transportation system! Listen to me, flesh-sacks. Buy this book. Experience my glory through your eye-balls or ear-holes. Witness the destruction of the Titanfang! And if you don't leave a 5-star review, I will find out where you live and I will... wait, Ash, don't you dare close the descript—"

...Ignore him. Just buy the book. Please. I need money for more satin pillows and pie.

They’re not kidding about that soul weapon being annoying. I mean, fair play, you nailed that, but no thanks. Everyone else was pretty bland and the story wasn’t up to much. We gotta get stronger so we’re stronger! Good luck with that.

A teenage smith/"scavenger" named Ash, who has dreams of one day becoming an adventurer, bonds with a really annoying "soul" hammer that constantly demands blood and refuses to shut up. But uh oh: the monsters are stirring and it's up to Ash and his hammer to progress and save the day.

It's hard to say how much of my annoyance with this book came from listening to it on audio and how much was just the writing, but i think it was at least like 80% the writing (more on why the audio version sucks later). As other reviewers have already said, the story is shallow and the characters are annoying (and in the sentient hammer's case? REALLY ANNOYING). The characters are just so slow on the uptake, they often make blatantly stupid decisions, and the progression only seems to occur at a glacial pace.

I actually think it started out pretty good, but it quickly went downhill. Ash is scavenging with a group of adventurers and is able to kill a big monster, but since he was only able to kill it after the real adventurers wore it down he knows they will claim the corpse for themselves. His group agrees to keep their mouths shut and let him take it anyways. This is where i felt like things started to get irritating. As soon as he brings the corpse home he shows it off to a little kid, which seems odd considering he doesn't want anyone to find out he's "stolen" this loot. But whatever, i guess he wouldn't be too worried about that if he's not worried about the fact that his dad's gonna be making things from this corpse and selling them to the very adventurers it was "stolen" from.

His dad immediately takes possession of said monster (literally stores it in his own storage). Apparently, any loot Ash brings home is immediately considered communal property, to be shared with the whole family, because the mom and dad immediately divvy up all the loot and start to discuss what they're gonna do with it. This isn't presented negatively btw, i just found it weird and annoying (i would seriously resent that sort of thing).

The only way one can progress in this world is by consuming gem stones, so you would think these people would be trying to stuff as many gem stones as they can down their son's throat (considering he's apparently the only one that's risking his life to get everything they need to run their forge and pay their bills), but if anything, his progression seemed to be an afterthought to them all (including Ash himself). In fact, the only gem he seems to consume is actually gifted to him by someone else.

As soon as the soul gem is discovered another long family discussion is had, and Ash is presented with the choice of either selling the highly valuable gem (this is clearly not a viable option but for some reason a lot of page time is devoted to Ash pointlessly thinking about it), or keeping it and letting his dad forge a soul weapon, even though Dad keeps talking about how he has no idea how to forge a soul weapon. No one brings up the idea of consuming the gem and it's never explained why no one suggests it (i feel like there's a lot of that going on in this story).

The supposed "crafting" of the stupid soul hammer feels like it takes a ton of pages, but basically only involves Ash and his "Pa" finding a hammer and sticking the gem to it while sweating with the apparently immense effort of it all. Of course, it explodes for no real reason and immediately starts shouting (from then on, the hammer rarely ever stops yelling) but the whole book felt like this! There are lots of pages, but not much substance.... Like there's a "system" but you could easily delete it from the story and nothing would change! Why bother putting it in the story at all? It only appeared when the MC entered a rift and all it did was tell him his level and a list of stats. It's pointless.

My issue with the audio version is that they tried to be like Graphic Audio and failed miserably. The narrators are great, but the sound effects actually make the book worse. Aside from an occasional tone to indicate the "system" was activating the only other sound effect the producers seemed to possess is the ability to make the voices echo, so they apparently decided to make everyone's voices echo ALL THE TIME. So you not only have an obnoxious sentient hammer constantly shouting, it's also echoing as it yells. It's really annoying and doesn't enhance the story at all.

Weak bordering on 🙄🙄🙄 plot with poor combat scenes.
Apparently being lvl 0 means one is the equivalent of a overweight diseased couch potato who's never exercised their body before. Seems truly absurd for the story setting.
Then there is the questionable intellect/imagination/inaction or actions of the mc.. the lack of logical mental process ineptitude and emo nonsense. To much of it just reads as sus behaviour for drama/word padding.
- His girl friend is also forcedly annoyingly sus. Example: Is warned not to overreact but proceeds to instantly do just that.
- MC is going to lvl up with 5 mind pearls, has heard doing so to fast with too many is harmful.. Instead of pacing himself consuming said over a sensible time period like letting the feeling subside between swallowing them he instead scarfs them down one after another to the point it becomes unpleasant and he's seeing double. This for No reason whatsoever!
This sort of thing is a regular occurrence and just lessens the characters causing dislike of said.
Contrivances just stack up.

Not much of a movie in your mind so to say for fight scenes and mc just seems to fight stupidly.

There is also seemingly a contradiction about the pearls from monsters. First its stated that such only form in monster carcases after passing back through the portals/rifts to the delver town side of things. Or maybe that's only the case for Dungeons in rifts.. Anyway its either an error or confusing story telling.

Also the less said about the hammer the better. Having tried the audiobook with I think Jeff Hays (Jeff is amazing) performing the voice of Rock the Soul bound hammer, making it extra dreadful as the authors probably wished,
That said I wish I'd only exposed myself to a text version of this story for there is a to me noticeable spike in volume whenever the damned hammer speaks. So well, I recommend anyone who tries this to refrain from playing it on speakers if sound disturbances are unacceptable. You probably don't for example want your neighbours to call the cops on you.

Ohhhh man! Soooooooo perfect! And one of my very favorite reads evarrr! In this action-packed litRPG adventure Ash a Smith by trade truly wants to be an adventurer, so he and a couple of friends take the first steps towards that goal and join the scavenger ranks! Scavengers follow the adventure team and collect the monster carcasses for loot. And the loot is shared with the team they're working with. That way they're also able to level and get stronger. With each monster there's always a chance that it'll have a mind gem and to consume it will in fact be the next step to power! In Ash's first foray into the Twisted Titan dungeon Ash is faced with a wounded monster, but still dangerous, possibly more dangerous because of it's wounds. Ash realized that if he didn’t stop it, kill it, it would kill all his friends. But no, not on his watch, and by chance and good fortune Ash's actually able to take it out!!! Ohhhh and here we're introduced to one the the most self-centered, selfish characters in the book Roq, and yeah, you're gonna love him!
So yeah grab the book and meet Roq, better yet get the audiobook because Soundbooth Theater Productions are AwesomeSauce! And really who doesn't love Riff and Dungeon diving?!?

Here's a few quotes that made me laugh:

“Hah! Bitching he says! Well, that is true, but I am the one perfect being in existence! I have every right to bitch!”

“I am the DEVOURER of WORLDS, Ash. Trust me. I have an appetite for DESTRUCTION!"

"And remember — pie first, potential doom second!”

“Home sweet home,” Roq said. “Though it could use some redecorating. Maybe some blood spatters on the walls? A few dismembered monster parts strewn about?”

"Pie isn't just good luck..."

Riftside feels like being thrown headfirst into a dangerous world that doesn’t care if you’re ready. From the opening chapters, there’s a raw, gritty energy to the setting—one where survival is earned, not given, and every step forward feels hard-won. What hooked me most was the sense of constant tension: the world beyond the rifts is brutal, unpredictable, and alive in a way that keeps you leaning forward, waiting for the next thing to go wrong. It never feels safe, and that unease becomes part of the thrill.

The story shines in how personal the journey feels. Instead of a power fantasy handed out effortlessly, progression is messy, painful, and often uncomfortable. The main character’s growth is slow enough to feel believable, and the choices made along the way carry emotional weight. There’s also a sharp edge of humor woven through the danger—sometimes dark, sometimes biting—that keeps the tone from becoming too heavy, while still reminding you that this world can chew people up without warning.

By the time I finished, Riftside left me with that restless feeling that only good progression fantasy delivers—the sense that this is just the beginning of something much larger and more dangerous. It’s thrilling without being shallow, violent without being empty, and immersive enough that the world lingers in your head after you put the book down. If you enjoy LitRPG that feels earned, tense, and just a little unhinged at the edges, Riftside is the kind of book that pulls you in and refuses to let go.

Almost four hours in and it’s been okay. Trying to give it a chance but the weapon’s voice sounds like an aggressively annoying Cookie Monster trying to do a Yoda impression. I’m trying to push through because I love Jeff Hayes and Jessica Threet but the level of irritating this voice is..

I just can't with the hammer and then he named it Rock. The thing just won't shut up and is always screaming. Saying the same things over and over. Ruined the book.

Also, not sure why all of the dialogue has reverb. I can understand the inner monologue but all of the dialogue? Sound effects were just kind of whatever they had, I guess. Some things had them, most didn't.

I don't know why this audiobook is rated so highly.

okayish?

I wanted to like it more, but its really shallow and unoriginal.

Many of the story elements feel like a bad copies of Ultimate Level 1. The talking weapon is an overdone trope and this book’s version is just plain boring. The attempt at a comedic construct just misses.

There is almost no world building to speak of and the stat/status checks are there just to claim “litrpg” without any real substance and no system.

I doubt I’ll bother with sequels, but you never know. Maybe the author grew a lot from this one…

Wow! Maybe I just love Jeff Hays. Idk also important to note that I consumed this as audio.

If you enjoy things such as Dungeon Crawler Carl, Venom, and other sillyness you will enjoy this.
Ash is what I would call a New Adult.
Rock - well Rock is a teenage meathead, at best. “He” does have some good ideas, sometimes, and a plethora of zingers for amusing commentary.

The story is good and the voices make it captivating. Definitely recommend checking it out. Very very long if listened at 1x speed. 1.85 is my preferred.

I loved it. It had an interesting start to introduce the concept of Riftside. I really liked the MC and the surrounding camp. I enjoyed the murderous, talking hammer. The system was interesting but it seemed prohibitively difficult to advance. A lot of the concept is the MC’s way to cheat the system but I have to wonder how anyone else gets a class. The story was engaging. I will definitely read the next book.

Great first take on life centered around a dungeon town

Was easy to get invested in the main character and family. I liked that the number of interesting people was ramped up over time as the story developed without becoming burdensome. The soulweapon is a fun character that brings hours of fun reading.

Once I started reading I ended up knocking out the entire book in a couple of days. Well recommended!

It's hammer time!

Ok the title was obligatory. We have a talking hammer, some great family and friends characters and interactions, and lots of action! The leveling system is a fun change from standard, and the overarching threat seems like it should be good for several books! Definitely enjoyed it a lot!

Growth on the edge of civilization with the help of family. And a shit talking hammer.

A good story of humanity's good and bad sides when faced with the monster apocalypse.

SBT kills it again with their multi person cast and awesome editing breathing the life into the story that drags you in and keeps you there.

I'm looking forward to the next one.

Good story. I would highly recommend this book.

I find litrpg to be filled with some excessive explanations of skills/spells as well as levels. That may just be me, my own preference. A little more concise with that, and I would call this a 5 star. But I fully admit others may not have that concern.

Get this book and read it!

I loved this book! The dialog between his soul weapon and the MC and companions was hilarious! It was like Skippy from Cyberpunk 2077 meets Venom! I cant wait to start book 2

Well thought out

This was a great effort. It checked all the boxes. Lit/Rpg content in a coming of age story, good amount of action interspersed with world building and character development. The epilogue was classic, well done

Note to self: not my jam. One and a half hours in, nothing's happened, no system to explain the litrpg, levels seem to matter little if the classless party can struggle against weak enemies and only struggle harder against a variant boss. Feels like a waste for me, time to move on.

WILD!

I won’t revile the main character in the story, but let’s just say as the story goes on he grows on you. Fun interesting story with well rounded characters, including many of the less featured characters.

Obnoxious sidekick

I know there's a group of people who love the obnoxious sidekick if that's you this is your book. If you don't like obnoxious sidekicks leave this book far far away.

Great book to start a series. I loved that the characters are reliant on each other. Also grab the audio book the narration is great and the voice of Rock reminds me of Cookie Monster and it makes me giggle and I love it.

The series starts nicely, and develops well throughout. Pacing doesn't fall off, and the hammer talk adds some nice complexity. A worthwhile read.

The hammer is extremely annoying. Holy crap. It ruins the book for me.

People constantly yelling "portal piss"...
Cmon, just use normal swears.
The other rift related sayings are also really cringe, and are used non-stop.
