Lucy Waterstone is being bartered.

Gerald Waterstone, her father, is drowning in debt and would never sell his precious horse farm. He’d much rather trade his lisping spinster of a daughter to Lord Dufton in return for being made whole. But it isn’t Lucy Dufton wants, rather the estate attached to her skirts. Marsden. She has no idea why Dufton covets Marsden or even what it is. The only thing Lucy cares about is avoiding Dufton.

Fortunately, Dufton isn’t the only one who wants Marsden.

Harrison Estwood, the object of Lucy’s girlish affections, also wants Marsden. He’s been trying to buy the property, only Marsden isn’t for sale. And Estwood doesn’t like or trust Lucy given the animosity between him and her father.

Summoning what little courage she possesses, Lucy makes Estwood a daring proposal. After all, if she is to be bartered for a piece of property, Lucy would rather handle the negotiations herself.

Marriage in return for Marsden. Will Estwood accept?

Miss Lucy Waterstone is stuck. Her father is drowning in debt and would rather sell her than his precious horse farm. Lucy's prospective groom doesn't want her, though, just a family property that is entailed to her. If she is to be bartered, Lucy would rather handle the negotiations herself. Businessman Harrison Estwood also wants the Marsden land, but the two have a bit of history. Will Estwood accept Marsden in exchange for marriage?

This is book nine in The Beautiful Barringtons series. It is "Barrington adjacent" and can be mostly read as a standalone. Its connection is to book two: Lucy is Andromeda Barrington's friend and Harry is a friend and business partner of Granby.

I love a runaway heroine, desperate to escape her family's awful plans! A girl with a lisp and an off-putting snobby father, Lucy has been made to feel less-than for most of her life. The book gave me Devil In Winter vibes and started strong. For me, there was a little slight balance issue. Lucy and Harry both had trauma and there was so much chemistry build up that I wanted a bigger pay off. The steam in this story was a bit of a tease, with a lot of thoughts and anticipation but little on-page action. If there had been 1-2 more chapters of this couple getting to enjoy their marriage happily, I think that would have taken it from a four star to a five.

Tropes: Spinster, Runaway Heroine, Marriage of Convenience, Secret Crush

Steam: 2 (one longer scene, one shorter)

* I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

Dare I say this is one of the best historical romance series out there? Because it is. I keep expecting these books to not be as good because we are on book 9, but nope she always kills it. This one was no different, and I pretty much ignored work all day to read it because I couldn't put it down.

I loved Lucy, and you don't often get to see a lot of heroines like her. Most heroines in HR are fighting the norms, being outspoken, and not following rules. Lucy on the other hand is quiet and afraid of her over exacting father. He has beaten her down emotionally to where she feels like she does not have a voice. I almost cried while reading some parts because her father is downright wretched to her. Her stepmother is horrid too. But all she wants is someone to love her, and however misguided that is, she wants it from her father. Lucy, we understand, we've all got daddy issues too. She will do anything to please him even if that means pushing away the one man who has always seen her. When Lucy finds out her father means to sell her off to a ruthless lord with a penchant for violence, she finally takes her life into her own hands and proposes to Harry.

I was happy to see Lucy finally grow a backbone to get away from those awful people. Harry, while angry a lot of this book and focused on revenge, still protected Lucy and taught her to speak up for herself. As a couple, I loved them together and they paired perfectly. There was tension and longing. There was pain and things they had to overcome for their happily ever after.

This book made me feel a lot of emotions while reading it. Overall, this book was excellent, and it was in my top 3 in the series but who am I kidding I love them all.

Can unrequited feelings and fragile trust sustain a marriage of convenience turned fairytale?

Lucy is a 27yo spinster, a lady seen not heard, firmly crushed under her father’s strict regimen. The man’s a selfish snobbish prig who wasted everything, including her dowry, on thwarting the only man who ever truly showed interest in her – a man she was forced to rudely disgrace.
Harrison is a 36yo blacksmith’s son who made his way in the world with blood, sweat and great determination; a man with a vision, a love of old weaponry and a knack for investing. He came from nothing and made himself a very wealthy man, but even with a duke at his side, the ton still snubs him – and so does the shy girl he fell for years ago.

She may not be brave, but she’s not simple as so many seem to assume because of her lisp, and so, when her father barters her – and more importantly the mineral rich land attached to her – to a cruel controlling Lord, she gathers all her courage and reaches out to his nemesis, the man she’s been pining for all these years...

This was a riveting read; dark and twisty, delicious and thrilling till the end!
The villains are a cruel, conniving, underhanded bunch. Every deadly sin except sloth comes to play in this tumultuous romance. There’s a lot of verbal abuse, manipulation and general ugliness.
And then there’s them, the bright spot, two people who’ve been secretly in love for years. I really liked this couple! Her sharp mind, his crude self-confidence, the way he sees what no one else does and pushes her to blossom. They bond over being underestimated and belittled all their lives for something out of their control. They just complete each other so perfectly – even with all the potholes.
There’s a few cameos by characters from the previous books, but this story stands fully on its own. It was different, brutal, and I loved every second of it!

My Lovely Girl

Harry and Lucy are very well written characters who are not perfect. The depth at which they are shared in this story is wonderful. They are complex humans with doubts and histories that influence their decisions. And those decisions are sometimes ones that make you smile while other times make you cringe. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book all the way to the delightful end. Highly recommend!!!

A wonderful story from the world of Barringtons.
Lucy was a beautiful girl inside out just full of insecurities because of his cruel , unfeeling father.
Harry was from another world who gave her wings. he has his own insecurities. together they formed their own world.
the pace of story was good. slow burn.
on the whole very entertaining

Beautiful Barringtons is one of my favorite series, so I jumped on the chance to read this as soon as it was released, especially since I always liked Lucy in the previous books and Estwood was so deliciously mysterious. This book does them credit beautifully. Both of them are people who have overcome difficult parents and more than challenging circumstances to break free, make something different of their lives and find each other. It has been heartwarming to see Lucy emerge from her cocoon and to see Estwood fall in love and cherish her. It is a lovely (and even moderately spicy!) story that you should definitely read!

Fabulous addition to the world of Barringtons. Harry Estwood has been totally deserving of his HEA with Lucy and I loved the telling of their story.

it breaks my heart to give this book anything less than 5 stars because I love Estwood that much but sighs. I did really enjoy the first 75% of it - I know it's not Ayers's best writing (I think that honour goes to recipe for a rogue) but it still felt like a warm hug and I was just so happy because it hits so many of the tropes I love so much.

but damn, that last 25% - I felt like Harry and Lucy were learning to have healthier communication and trust, but they kind of reverted to the way they were at the start of the relationship, and I didn't really like that. plus the big reveal was done in a really rushed and clumsy manner - like the villains were overheard discussing and reviewing their plot in COMPLETE DETAIL and it just felt so stupid. plus it was ridiculously convoluted and I was just rolling my eyes.

i think the issue is that this is the kind of story that works better as a lower stakes kind of romance, but it instead attempted to be a plotty book? idk man I could have done without that plot, and had the conflict focus entirely on Lucy overcoming her guilt and shame, and Harry learning to trust. It would have matched the vibes of the book better, rather than shoehorning in this conflict that ultimately felt very meh

I love Kathleen Ayers' writing. This is my 31st book by her. I read one of her books in 2016 but didn't picked her up again faithfully in 2019 and now she is one of my top favorite authors. For my birthday a few years ago, my DIL bought some of my favorite Kathleen Ayers books and met with her to personally sign them for me. What a fantastic gift and I'll always treasure them. She has such hot and yummy sex in her books. Always a sign of a good book. 😊I started this series back in 2020 and it's always been a favorite.

I really liked Lucy and Harrison. I appreciated how he was with her and how he realized most of it was caused by parental issues. He was very patient. I loved the little twists and turns. I have to admit it did take a bit to get started but once it got deeper into it, I was hooked and couldn't put it down. The other thing I noticed is this book as well as book 7 and 8 of this series didn't seem to be as steamy as prior books. I sort of thought so when I was reading it but didn't remember that I had put in my notes that the 2 prior also seemed less steamy. Still overall a really good read.

Title: A Proposal to Wed (The Beautiful Barringtons Book 9)
Author: Kathleen Ayers
My fellow readers. Lucy how could you do that to me? After all that time that I have invested into you. Snuggles up under the covers at night, reading about you and your soul mate, while you two work through the challenges that you faced at every waking moment. Roomy I’m going to need you to handle it from here girl, because I’m about to pop it off in here.
They don’t want some Nikki Minaj. I’ll go straight up Super Bowl 2025, Kendrick Lamar up in hear. Ok?! I simply could not handle this story readers. It had its emotional highs.
It had it emotional lows. And for the special dessert: a sexually charged and steamy entree that I could not resist. Our male main character, Harry. Mr. Harrison Estwood from these here lovely United States. Is a man that I am willing to have in my bed. Yes in deed.
Can I get an Amen on that? A - M- E- N! Yes. I’m reading along during one of Harry’s interesting four play bed talk, you know. Everything’s all sweet and soft kissing and Harry says. He says -
Relax I won’t F@ck you tonight.
Girrrrlll! My grape juice went spewing out my mouth. My dog Alvin jumped up like I’ve hurt myself because I was coughing so much. All I could think of was to put the juice down so that I could save my iPad from getting sticky and wet you know. Sigh, it was funny.
In my head I said, that damn Harry. As for Sally and family members. Maybe this is morbid but If I was Lucy I would have told her prove it!
Slamming my hand on the coffee table I would yell at her to, hop up on this damn table right now. Throw up your skirts and prove it!
Now, I don’t know what good that would have done, but the satisfaction would have been marvelous sitting next to the big picture window. Readers we do have our villains that are hidden here and there through the story. They for one definitely made the story a challenge to get through without you shouting out like a lunatic or throwing your iPad across the room.
Harry and Lucy can be a power couple in London if Harry keeps working at Lucy in certain departments. Ladies this man has. Strong. Primal. Masculine. Attractive appeal. Whewwww. I just got a little tingly all over. Just give me a moment…
Lady Adromeda is my hero. I don’t know why I had tears. It was just two women hugging. It moved me you know. I knew at this moment that it was the pivotal turning point for Lucy.
The writer… man the writer did an amazing job at describing Harry Eastwood. I believe that I hyperventilated and then passed out when she first described his manly physique. His tan broad sun skin shoulders stretched out to here like mountains. His abs has sweat that trickles down between dips and valleys. Those dips and valleys then transcends down towards the v shape of his peek- a- boo tree trunk of a — oh my GOD here I go again! So family, what an amazing story you will love readers.
It is so worthy of your time to read. The characters are just phenomenal. My jaw dropped at how these characters were crafted/created into this story. The plot is just mind blowing The plot is completely powerful. If this book was a movie I would nominate it for best movie.
Harry Eastwood Gerald Waterstone, and Mrs. Bartle would win for outstanding performance. That is how real they were to me. Through the narrative and the dialogue, one could understand the meaning. The raw emotions. The true depth of that character and what they are conveying to the other.
This is one of the true parts of writing. The realism. You have to make it seem and feel real. The readers has to see the creation of your words in their imagination. That’s the power of a good writer.
And you know what. This writer did that to me. I give this book two golden snaps and a — tell me again which way you want me to bend over in the mirror Mr. Eastwood. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!

I enjoyed this book with minor dings but I’ll get to that. Also, this is the first book I have read from the series so I can it definitely can be read as a stand-alone but no doubt, I will be going back to read the first 8 books!!

The best parts first, the edge of my seat escape that Lucy made from the modiste shop, Harrison (who falls first) showing through his words and actions how beautiful, brave and intelligent Lucy is, watching Lucy come into her own (using her voice, standing up to her abusive, selfish, egotistical father and greedy, selfish step-mother and almost eliminating her lisp) with Harrison’s (Harry) words and actions, finally seeing Lucy’s father and step-mother and Lucy’s almost betrothed brought low!

Harrison Estwood is not a man of the ton, he is a son of an abusive father who was a blacksmith (where he got his know-how about metallurgy, iron ore, etc) but he is definitely a self-made man and has his own fortune. I loved him from the outset. His unrepentant desire for Lucy that has been there since the first time he laid eyes on her to telling her that their marriage would not be a marriage of convenience, he told that she would spend every night in his bed, to prove his point, he didn’t purchase a separate bed for her in either of their homes. He gave Lucy what she needed to feel safe, seen, heard, respected, beautiful and later, loved.

Lucy went from a traumatized woman, frightened of her own shadow, almost silent, meek, shrinking violet to slowly finding her strength and courage to showing her intelligence and her cheekiness and her little, endearing quirkiness (like her love of all things lemons, her keen aim (she likes to throw things) and her desire for a cat).

Two reasons for my 4 star rating is the miscommunication trope that seemed too go a little long and just when you thought it was resolved, it would rear its ugly head again also, I was a little disappointed with the less then spice in the spicy scenes (it was fade to black).

Despite these two things, overall I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to go back and read the first 8 books! Thank you Kathleen for a story that’s shows a woman with traumas and how she overcame them!!

Lucy’s world crashed when she overhears a conversation between her father and step mother planning to sell her to the wealthy but cruel lord Dufton to clear his debts.

The realization stings deeply because she’s always craved her father’s love, only to realize she’s just a bargaining chip.

Harry, a self-made commoner who amassed his fortune through investments in railways and mining, fell in love with Lucy the moment he laid eyes on her.

Determined to take control of her own future, Lucy boldly turns to Harry—not only to offer him a marriage proposal, but also Marsden, the land passed down to her through her maternal grandfather. It's the very property Harry has long sought to purchase from her father, who refused to sell. Now, Lucy offers it freely, along with her hand.

Harry accepted Lucy’s proposal as a chance to take revenge on Gerald Waterstone, the man who had scorned him, and to finally claim the woman he had always desired as his own.

Gerald is furious, not only because Lucy rejected his carefully laid plans to marry her into wealth, but because she chose a commoner—a man he despises.

Married to Harry, Lucy is happier than she has ever been. Harry is kind and devoted, everything her heart ever longed for—and she is deeply in love with him. But her newfound joy is threatened, as her father & stepmother conspired to annul the marriage and marry her off to Dufton.

Beautifully written, with a captivating storyline and compelling plot, this is a story that captivates you from the first page to the last.

A Proposal to Wed is a charming and engaging historical romance with a clever twist on the marriage-of-convenience trope.

Lucy Waterstone is about to be traded off by her debt-ridden father to a man she can’t stand. But Lucy decides to take control of her future. Instead of being forced into marriage, she offers a bold deal to Harrison Estwood—the man she once had a crush on. If he marries her, he gets the estate he wants. Simple. Or is it?

This book has:
• A brave and likable heroine
• A mysterious estate at the center of the plot
• Tension and chemistry between the main characters
• A good mix of romance, wit, and drama

It’s a fun, fast-paced read perfect for fans of Regency romance who like smart women, stubborn men, and a love story that builds from conflict.

A Proposal to Wed seems to be a clever, emotionally satisfying romance wrapped in historical drama and social commentary. Ayers crafts a narrative where the stakes are deeply personal and politically charged, making Lucy’s proposal not just daring—but revolutionary.

I was gifted a copy by the author, all opinions are my own.

This story has a little bit of everything. Lucy is a twenty-seven year old spinster who thinks her father loves. She soon finds out he is heavily in debt and the only thing he has left to trade is her. Lucy has been in love with Harry Estwood since she first saw. Harry is not titled, but has worked his way up in the world and is very wealthy, brilliant and to Lucy, very handsome. Her father calls him all sorts of name because he feels distain for him to even be allowed among polite society or the Ton. Her father has arranged a marriage to the Earl of Dufton, who is handsome, wealthy and titled. But one carriage ridge reveals to Lucy that he is mean and uncaring and only planning on marriage because his mother is insistent. Lucy is determined to not marry this man, but what can she do? Fortunately for Lucy, her best friend just happens to be a Duchess and her Duke is a friend of Harry's. You will need to read this interesting story to find out what happens to these characters. There are a few graphic sex scenes.

This was another absolutely delightful read from Kathleen!

Unsurprisingly, I loved Lucy. I just couldn’t help but feel for her and just want to give her a hug. Her father’s abuse and control was rage inducing and poor Lucy did everything she could to not make it worse. I loved the slow build up of her courage and seeing her finally take the leap. It was emotional and I felt like I went on the journey with her. And I just adored Romy’s support and unerring friendship despite how little she received in return. Everyone needs a friend like Romy!

On the other side of the coin we have Harry Eastwood. A self made man who’s low beginning made him a target for petty Lords like Lucy’s father. He’s more rough around the edges than the usual Lord but he I really liked his rawness and depth of feeling and uncovering his past.

Harry has wanted Lucy since the first time he saw her, and she wanted him. But after one regretful evening where Lucy is forced to cut him they are parted on sour terms. That is, until Lucy needs help.

I really liked that we got to see Lucy’s life and what pushes her to act. The build up to the marriage of convenience was just as compelling as the after. The takes felt high and yet the romance isn’t rushed but feels like it develops naturally. I understood Harry’s insecurities and why they coloured his view of things and I also felt for Lucy as she struggled to shake life long beliefs about her worth and ‘flaws’. Harry was exactly the person she needed him to be and I loved how well he saw her and how he showed he cared. They were maybe an unlikely match but it was a romance I just really fell for. The plot and the stakes took a twist at the end which was entirely unexpected but actually super satisfying since this book has some real villains!

Overall another very enjoyable read with heartfelt characters. Something about their insecurities was just so relatable and real that this story left an impact. Plus of course, we get an array of delightful side characters, the familiar historical setting and some fun steamy moments! It was everything I’ve come to look forward to in a Kathleen Ayers read.

This story is about two ( among many ) fantastic side characters in the Barrington world.
Lucy has lived all her life trying to please her father but it seems it’s never enough to garner his approval, no matter what she does.
When she accidentally eavesdrops a conversation regarding her future, she suddenly realizes all her efforts to be the dutiful and obedient daughter throughout the years have been for nothing. She’s considered even less important than his precious horses.
It’s about time she stands up for herself and go bargain with the same man she publicly humiliated a few years back and to whom his father seems to hold a grunge against.
Lucy and Easton are two wonderful characters, two people whose emotions have been played against them and whose good nature has been blinded by revenge ( Easton ) or whose good heart has been taken advantage of ( Lucy) so trust doesn’t come easily anymore.
Good to have had a glimpse into some of the Barrington people as well.

Ahh I have been waiting for Harry's book. I have been intrigued by his character since I read the second book. I usually don't have much empathy for a man but poor Harry really. Not feeling worthy but it felt so understandable in this book and so heartbreaking. I think it helped that , dare I say it for Kathleen, he is almost a cinnamon roll character. He is manly but not against being an absolute simp for Lucy. I love the little things he did like getting her the kittens. Lucy was really just as sweet back, that epilogue was just so sweet.

I think I missed the largeness of the cast of these books, we got Romy and her husband a little but this story is pretty isolated from other stories outside the prologue.

The things that dropped this down for me was one the hitting (I don't even like play hitting) and the fact that I think this may have been less smutty than her other books.

I was in a bit of a reading slump, but then came another Barrington book! I loved Lucy and Harry. They were secondary characters in a previous book, and some Barrington characters appear in this one, mainly Romy, but the book really just centers on Lucy and Harry.

Lucy has been stifled by her father for most of her life. Now a spinster, she has only ever had eyes for one man, but he is her father’s enemy, and low-born too. Harry has risen from humble beginnings to great wealth. He has some powerful friends, but also has some powerful enemies.

When Lucy’s father suddenly takes an interest in marrying her off to pay off his debts, she learns that her intended groom is an evil man, and decides that her only chance of escaping the marriage is to propose to someone else. Harry sees an opportunity to take revenge on his enemies while gaining the woman of his dreams.

This book has intrigue, drama, and even some steam, and is a great addition to the Barrington series. Best news? At the end, Kathleen Ayer’s promises that this isn’t the last Barrington book!

Well written, full of drama, love, emotions, steam, intrigue, society, chemistry and a marriage of convenience. Lucy is considered a spinster at the age of 27 and has a slight lisp. She overhears that she is to be married off to save her father and horses from his debts he owes. Lucy has other things on her mind and doesn't want her father's choice so she changes their plans. She knows Lord Dufton and what he is like and fully rejects that way of life. Harrison Estwood is a self made man who happens to be friends with a Duke she knows. Lucy runs to Harry for help and offers him marriage. This gives him a chance to get back at her father for snubbing him. After they marry , they still have to deal with her father and the trouble he causes before they can get to their happily ever after. Would recommend this story and the rest of this series.
I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.

A terrific read. Great characters and a complex plot. Selfish and greedy characters, an unlikeable cruel father and an untrustworthy step mothers make the heroine Lucy’s life miserable.
A smashing hero, unpopular with society, determined, stubborn and intrigued by the heroine. She has mental scars and needs to develop courage and find her voice. Both have haunted and unhappy pasts. Although they may seem an unlikely match, they plan a marriage of convenience. Eventually together, they manage to thwart the plots against them. The characters are all well developed and there’s plenty of angst and excitement as the plot develops. Very enjoyable and entertaining, thank you Kathleen Ayres!

A Proposal To Wed Review

Kathleen Ayers has done it again! A Proposal to Wed is a steamy and emotional read. Two wounded souls find love and heal one another’s wounds. Lucy was featured in other Barrington novels and she finally got her own HEA! When she discovers her controlling father plans to sell her to an evil man who wants to get his hands on property that is attached to her she goes to the one man she always wanted. She thinks he simply wants the land, but he wants Lucy even more. Harry has always wanted Lucy, but his own insecurities about his bloodline and an unfortunate past interaction make it difficult to trust her. However, they slowly realize that they are one another’s salvation. I’m a sucker for a low born hero that becomes a Prince Charming for the love of his lady. A great read!

A beautiful love story where a woman who has been used and abused starts to bloom when she makes her first independent decision towards the man she loves. The triumphs over adversities, and there are many, makes a thoroughly satisfying read.

Perfect!

Absolutely riveting, couldn't put it down! If you love a good story with a self made man, and a proper Lady, then this one's for you, I loved Harry and Lucy's journey to a well deserved happily everafter, I've laughed, I've cried, but overall I've come to the conclusion that this may be the best one yet!! So go on now, read this steamy, dreamy romance, you'll love it!

I absolutely adore this series. This spinoff from book two… I just gobbled it up! I can’t believe KA made us wait so long for Lucy and Harry’s story. (But I do understand)

Lucy is a spinster with an evil father who separated her from Harrison merely because he was not part of the gentry. This was their second chance. I won’t spoil anything, but I will say I was somewhat surprised at the ending. And it is hard to surprise me! Although I got a little miffed at some scenes, when they all came together…. I loved it.

Gently bred FMC has a lisp, no dowry, and a Very Bad set of parents. Self-made MMC has a chip on his shoulder, a thirst for iron ore, and the hots for FMC. Both have trust issues bc ofc

I think Ayers is gonna do a Lilian + Armwood book next to wrap up the Barrington extended cast of characters at the very least

strength comes from within

Another wonderful story by Kathleen. I just wish Lucy had been a little stronger in the beginning. I guess it took the love of a good man for her to see how strong she really was and act upon it. Looking forward to more from Kathleen in future releases .

Loved it. Ms Ayers writes a good book, with characters that you do not have suspend disbelief to accept with mental issues.

Anyhow, hurrah!!!
