Makepeace and Melbury are back, in their darkest and most disturbing investigation yet...MOTIVE, MEANS AND OPPORTUNITYKILLING TIME The year is 1910, the place is Burtoft, in rural Lincolnshire and Makepeace and Melbury
Private Investigations Limited, the most prolific and respected detectives in the county,
have been approached by Chief Superintendent Chandos Chandler, of North Anglia Constabulary,
to form the, 'Investigations Department', under the watchful eye of a new senior officer, Chief
Inspector Percival Faraday, who with an agenda all of his own, is hell bent on one thing only.
And that, is ruining Thadius P. Makepeace, any way he can.

When two nurses from the Burtoft Infirmary are reported as missing, the race to find them is
hampered by a lack of witnesses and evidence but, when a particularly horrific discovery is
made in the basement of an otherwise unremarkable suburban, terraced house in Burtoft,
the entire case is turned on it's head and nothing is what it seems.

A new boss with new rules makes Makepeace and Melbury's job to find the missing persons
all the more difficult, but when a third person goes missing in unexpected circumstances, for Fortitude
Melbury, it brings the case even closer to home, and for Thadius Makepeace, one slip and life will never
be the same again!

Sometimes, you have to;
