A Gentleman's Reckoning

A Scandalous Past. A Secret Identity. A Love That Could Ruin Everything.

Once the most charming rake in London, John Aubin lost everything when he overheard a powerful earl’s fraudulent dealings. Branded a liar and cast out of society, he now lives under an assumed name, working in the very orphanage the earl owns. But Aubin’s purpose isn’t charity—it’s revenge. Sober and focused for the first time in his life, he plans to expose the earl’s corruption and reclaim his good name. Nothing will stand in his way—until he meets her.

Lady Eugenia Stanich has never truly known a father’s love. The Earl of Goodwin may be a revered figure in society, but to Geny, he is a distant shadow, more invested in power than in family. The Foundling Asylum that bears her father’s name is the one place where Geny feels a connection to the mother she lost years ago. If she marries, it would be to a man who shares her devotion to the children, but London’s gentlemen see charity as a pastime, not a calling. Then the new supervisor arrives, and Geny dares to hope she has met someone different.

As John and Geny grow closer, desire sparks and hearts entwine, but the truth looms between them. If Lady Eugeniadiscovers that John is not who he claims to be—and worse, that he is using the asylum to destroy her father—he will lose not only his chance at redemption. He will lose the only woman who has ever inspired him to be a better man.* This book is closed door, no spice, clean and wholesome Regency romance. No matter how you prefer to word it, the content is suitable for anyone from young teens to a ripe old age.

I love a good redemption story. John was a rake until he overheard something spoken by the Earl of Goodwin, he shouldn’t have. He tried to the right thing, but it backfired. Now he wants revenge. He goes undercover at a foundling asylum , even uses a different name to try and find evidence of wrong doing. What he doesn’t expect is how wonderful the Earl’s daughter, Geny, who works at the asylum, is and finds friendship with her. And of course it’s hard to form relationships when you are keeping secrets. I loved this story. I felt bad for John being caught in that position. I loved Geny’s character and how caring she was and that she didn’t shy away from finding out the truth. And I of course loved Geny and John together. Overall, a great story and I recommend!

Jennie Goutet consistently writes delightful and well-crafted historical romances, and I am here for it! This one is about forgiveness and finding love in unexpected places, as John Aubin falls in love with Geny, the daughter of the man who was responsible for casting him out of society. Under an alias, John meets Geny and wonders how their connection could ever become something real. I had no idea how they would manage to make it to the altar, but Jennie created a clever and satisfying storyline with a happy ending. While the reader gets Geny's perspective, I liked that the male main character was the primary protagonist for a change.
Thanks to the author for the gifted ebook; I loved it!

When John is ruined and shunned by the ton for doing a good deed that backfires. He’s seeking a way to redeem himself and improve his reputation. He does so by taking a job in an orphan asylum owned by the man who ruined him under an assumed name. He’s hopeful that he can find proof of the Earl’s wrongdoing to clear his own name. It is at the asylum he find the girl who inspires him to be a better man. Unfortunately she’s the daughter of the man who ruined him in society.

Lady Eugenia is immediately attracted to the new steward, John. She sees how he shares her regard for the orphans and she eventually loses her heart to him. But how will she feel when she finds out who he really is and why he’s there?

This is a story of sweet redemption and second chances. John had a wonderful growth arc from rake to a true gentleman. I loved the relationship between he and Lady Eugenia.

"Everything about her left him feeling fresh and hopeful. It always had."

A Gentleman’s Reckoning by Jennie Goutet

4.5 stars
This one was so different from my typical Regency Romance I read and it made for a sweet breath of fresh air. I love all of the traditional Regencies, but it’s wonderful to have one that changes up the scenery, and this one most definitely did!

Mr. John Aubin. Watching him on his journey to overcome and learn from his past mistakes was truly beautiful. I love a good redemption story, and Jennie did a wonderful job with it.

Geny. Sweet, kind and thoughtful. I loved her caring nature. How she cared for the children and the Asylum. As an elementary teacher, I related to her and the way she cared for the children. I tried to care for my students when I was a practicing teacher.

Their romance was sweet, but angsty. I enjoyed the bit of mystery and things that John was trying to figure out; they kept me intrigued, and the ending surprised me.

This was my first novel by Jennie Goutet and I enjoyed her unique writing style and voice. I definitely look forward to reading more of her books in the future.

Favorite Parts:
Redemption from past
Bit of mystery/investigation
Visits to Asylum

A sweet romance wrapped in intrigue and exciting odds.

I confess that the plot grabbed me immediately. It has that kind of edge that adds flavour to the romance which is, of course, my main concern :-)

Redemption, secret missions, a club of rakes and a forbidden romance combine into a highly entertaining read.

I loved everything. The couple is lovely. They cannot seem more antagonic at first as they come face to face in a setting that was also keenly interesting to me.  She is the paragon of beauty and goodness. He is handsome, of course, but lost to good society. Thankfully, he has a noble heart. The irony lies in the fact that his good deed plunges him into a predicament that might cost him his reputation and his chance at love.

I loved how they met in a place that tugged at my heart and served as a great plot device. An orphanage and its running is key to both the story and the relationship. The interactions between lovely lady Eugenia and the clever gentleman in disgrace kept me really entertained as they are as elegant as the prose and as engaging as the plot.

I enjoyed the arc of redemption for John and the brave spirit in Geny. Everything comes together in the end to put things right, to learn from the past and to deliver a romantic reward to the characters. Really wholesome and meaningful story.

I'm loving these Bachelors of Blackstone's books! I've only read a couple so far but I'm hoping to read them all at some point! Gentlemen that have been wrongly accused, or are considered outcasts to society. Blackstone is their saving grace in a way. I've loved how he's come into play in the books that I've read! Very clever and creative plot and setting for a series.

John Aubin is one such gentleman who finds himself outcast from society and his good name (well as good of a name that a harmless rake can have). I loved watching him change his ways in trying to clear his name and show he wasn't lying. But there are some complications. One in the way of a beautiful young woman who has a heart of gold, Lady Eugenia Stanich, or Geny as her friends call her.

I loved learning more about the asylum/orphanage and thinking about those who tried to help give the poor and orphans a fighting chance at this time in history. And not just then but now as well.

I loved the sweet love story and was invested in trying to figure out how John was going to pull off his charade and be truthful to Geny. It was a tricky balance and one that, you guessed it, blows up in his face. But I loved this story of redemption. It was beautifully written!

Content: Clean.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

“A person is defined by their character, not by the title or situation they were born into.”

I love a good reformed rake story, and this definitely is one. You get a glimpse of John’s former life in the first chapter. I enjoyed seeing John’s growth and ultimate redemption. I really enjoyed his interactions with the orphans and his battle with his feelings for Geny because of their class differences. His stepbrother and his wife were delightful.

Geny was such a joyful person even when she was alone. I loved Geny’s devotion to the orphanage and her tender care of the orphans. I also loved how she embraced her friendship with Margery. Geny and John had a sweet yet swoony relationship.

It was so fun to get another glimpse inside Blackstone’s. Lord Blackstone and the other men were great friends to John.

A few more quotes:
“I suppose you could not have helped but to notice me, for I was staring at you quite unashamedly.”

“You wished to be reminded of the satisfaction of being kissed,” he whispered, his lips scarcely leaving hers. “Something like this?”

Do you know what I love seeing in a book? A strong female main character. Not only one who's strong, but one who isn't mean and nasty just for the sake of being strong.

Geny is my kind of FMC. She's a strong woman, but one who's gentle, kind, and humble enough to learn new things, however unpleasant they may be. Margery also seems to be that person, and I liked her just as much as Geny.

I loved watching the growth of both John and Geny, and very much enjoyed their roles in the foundling asylum and seeing John find his place. His character growth was a beautiful thing to watch.

And let's not forget that there's a Charity! I mean, I'm not sure how I feel about her bulbous nose and thick features, but at least her spirit's beautiful. 😂

If you want a book that makes you feel peaceful, content, happy, and like you could watch the lives of these characters for generations, then you'll want to pick this one up.

A Gentleman’s Reckoning by Jennie Goutet is part of the Bachelors of Blackstone series, and is a stand-alone novel. Lady Eugenia Stanich loves volunteering at The Foundling Asylum for orphans. She has a heart for children and feels more loved there than at home. John Aubin, a gentleman who has been shunned from society, is working at the orphanage under a different name. He is there to seek revenge on the founder who also happens to be Lady Eugenia’s father. They both connect, like each other, but what if Lady Eugenia finds out who John really is?

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet Regency romance with its dual POV. I loved the sweet banter, romantic tension, and the fascinating setting of an orphanage in Regency London. The author does a nice job of introducing you to others in Regency England besides the ton. Lady Eugenia and John were wonderful characters who experienced redemption and became the best versions of themselves. Watching John transform from a rake to good man was beautiful to see. Both characters did not let the past dictate their future.

The author has written such an original, beautiful and memorable story that will stay with you. I enjoyed this character driven story and highly recommend A Gentleman’s Reckoning by Jennie Goutet.

Well. I’ve enjoyed some of Jennie Goutet’s previous works, but this one I found really lax in a number of ways. The idea was good, but the execution felt lazy, as if she hadn’t really thought too deeply about it, and was just pushing the plot along.

Here’s the premise: Lady Eugenia (Geny) Stanich is the daughter of the Earl of Goodwin. It’s a lonely life, for her mother is dead, her father is a distant figure and her young brother is away at school much of the time. She doesn’t much enjoy society life and has few friends among the ton. Her closest friend is a wealthy merchant’s daughter. Her great love is the orphanage her mother started, where she spends a great deal of her time.

John Aubyn is a bit of a rake and a ne’er-do-well, living a dissolute life until he overhears the Earl of Goodwin (Geny’s father, remember) admitting to wanting to dump some investments because he has insider knowledge that things are going pear-shaped. John feels obliged to relay this information to one of the other investors but is disbelieved and blackballed (thrown out) of the clubs and good society. He sets out to get his revenge by proving that the earl is misusing the funds of the orphanage, and gets himself employed as steward there, under an assumed name.

Now, this is a great setup. He’s masquerading as something he’s not and when he’s unmasked, as inevitably he will be, she will see him as a person unworthy of trust. And by that time, they will be well on the way to being in love. Of course they will. So the early part of the book is them developing ‘feelings’ for each other.

I have to be honest, and confess that this part rang false with me. Geny, after all, is an earl’s daughter, and John, for all his gentlemanlike appearance and manners (and I assume an educated accent, although that’s never mentioned), is a lowly employee, and one below the rank of presumed gentleman. It’s hard to believe that she would ever entertain the possibility of a match between them, even for five minutes. But not only does she do so, she encourages him at every opportunity, seeks out his company and even has no hesitation getting into a closed carriage with him without a chaperon, something that would destroy her reputation at a stroke if it became known (and no, him not being technically a ‘gentleman’ wouldn’t save her, it makes it worse, if anything).

The biggest problem with all of this is the practical one - money. How on earth does she imagine they would survive if she married him? She makes a big deal about the fact that she doesn’t need her father’s permission since she’s of age, but she knows perfectly well that he wouldn’t approve and therefore there would be no dowry forthcoming. What’s the salary for a steward at an orphanage? A hundred a year, maybe, if we’re being generous. That wouldn’t even cover the cost of her stockings and gloves. It’s madness. Yet on she goes, allowing herself to be drawn in because she can’t help herself, apparently, and nor can he. Regency restraint? Forget about it.

Of course, there’s a big explosion when everything comes out into the open, and this part of the book and the wrap-up of the romance is nicely done, and if you like sickly-sweet epilogues, you’ll be very happy.

There are some errors and oddities that tripped me up. Geny’s brother, the heir to the earldom, is given the courtesy title of Viscount Fernsby, but is inexplicably addressed throughout as Lord Caldwell. He also seems to think he’s a peer of the realm, which he won’t be until he inherits the earldom. Geny’s orphanage is also called an asylum, more usually a place for those considered to be insane. [UPDATE: in the Regency, asylum hadn't yet acquired its later meaning as a place for the insane, and meant any kind of refuge/hospital/place for the outcasts of society.] There are a few grammatical errors, too.

Fans of Jennie will certainly enjoy this book. I did too, up to a point, but the hero and heroine were a little bit too goody-two-shoes for my taste, and John is the typical Regency rake whose dissolute ways are only briefly seen, after which he is a perfect model of rectitude. My biggest problem is the way Geny fell (quite improbably, in my view) for the hired help, without giving a moment’s thought to the practicalities of marrying a man with a negligible income. This should have been a major hurdle, which he could have overcome at the proposal stage by revealing the estate he owns, but it seems the author never even considered this point. Disappointing. So only three stars from me.

This book was so good. This was my first book by the author but suffice to say I will be reading more of her books.

I liked the writing, and loved how the characters were portrayed along with the central plot, that was not just about the upper society. That somehow made the book even more endearing 🩷

Engaging and romantic! John Aubin knows he hasn’t been living his best life but things take a turn for the worse when he stands up against a powerful peer. He desperately wants to reclaim his standing in society and attempts this with a plan for revenge. What he didn’t expect was to fall for the peer’s daughter.

This story is captivating, creative, and inspiring. Connecting with the characters is easy due to Jennie Goutet’s talented writing. And I love the complexities of the story and the way it is resolved, opening possibilities for the characters continued growth. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to those who enjoy clean and intriguing Regency romance. I was given an early copy. A positive review was not required. This is my opinion.

•I give 5 stars!•⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

~A Scandalous Past. A Secret Identity. A Love That Could Ruin Everything...

-A Gentleman’s Reckoning, is a wonderful closed door, no spice, clean and wholesome Regency romance. It is part of an interconnected series that can easily be read as a standalone, but the series is worth charming its way into hearts. Truly, this is a unique and heartwarming story of a beautiful redemption and second chances done so well! Tastefully written and shows how a character can rise above a hard past. There are glimpses and implied suggestions of former life choices in the beginning of this story to set the stage, ti embark on a dear journey of fierce determination to live a better life and be a better person no matter what. Oh I adored seeing who he could become and the impact and influence for the better he had around him. I also loved seeing a beautiful romance bloom along the way with patience, positivity, and understanding. The swoony moments along the way paved the way to a beautiful happily there after for this dear endearing pair. It was worth the wait and satisfaction with its beautiful redemptive story laced with bright hope and bravery. Watching characters learn from the past, make things right, and continue forward led to such satisfaction for me. This my friends, is a dear story worth reading!🙌🏻📚❤️💯

“I find your character beautiful and without
equal.”

-Content: reformed rakish behavior; scandal, infidelity(side characters-in past mentioned), death-side characters, accident resulting in a broken arm, defending (a punch to the nose as a consequence), only kisses.

“A person is defined by their character, not by the title or situation they were born into.”

-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

“I think you are going to need some sweetness to offset your bitter trial.”

Perfect for lovers of Regency, a story of love and revenge turn redemption

Sunk in debauchery and unable to stop the spiral down, John suddenly finds himself ostracized and rejected by his peers after a good deed. And while he initially plans to revenge and return of his good name - in an orphanage, of all places, - he eventually finds purpose in life, learns compassion, understands how one’s actions can easily bless the less fortunate, gets face to face with the truth of his depraved life, and of course finds himself in love.

I love how gentle and beautiful the attraction between John and Geny grows into a true and genuine love. The romance is so so sweet. The reader won’t be bombarded by extreme passion or overly stimulating events but rather be pleasantly pulled into the inner workings of heart longing. However, the novel does have a dose of secrets and angst to keep the reader keep turning another page.

The dual POVs, comfortable prose, well-developed plot, and a clean romance are a few of the engaging things you’ll find here. As well as questioned social roles, abandoned assumptions, and challenged rules of engagement.

Also, if you’ve followed Mrs. Goutet for awhile and read most of her books, you might notice a wonderful growth in her writing, in the beautiful prose, in portrayal of the Regency atmosphere, and in the way the plot is weaved. Well done!

This is an installment in the series and the reader will meet Lord Blackstone and some of the members of his club but nothing in the book creates it impossible to read it as a stand-alone.

Possible triggers: emotional abandonment, death of a parent, grief, orphanage.

I had a privilege to read an advanced copy and absolutely loved it! All opinions expressed are my own

Overall this is a good enough book. It’s a regency romance, but focuses on the running of an orphanage and a fight against corruption, rather than balls and the marriage-mart. The MMC is a reformed rake and there’s a redemption angle to his story. Unfortunately, I found the book slow (my interest wandered many times) and yet with an underdeveloped insta-love romance.

Content:
There is no foul language or sex, and the violence is minimal (just a punch thrown). The romance is limited to lightly descriptive kisses. There is no mention of faith or God.

I love novels with a redemption story. And this one had a couple.

The premise of this story centers around a gentleman’s club that accepts men who have been black balled from London’s premier clubs.

John Aubin is one of the most charming rakes in London. He gambles with women’s feelings and the fortunes of gentlemen. When he overhears a conversation that put others at risk, he has to make a choice. If the honorable choice has dire consequences, is it worth it?

I loved John’s growth. His previous actions were considered acceptable and normal, but as he interacts with society after his fall, his brother and Lady Eugenia, he realizes that he doesn’t want his old life back. He wants a better one.

I loved Lady’s Eugenia’s goodness. I loved the setting of the asylum for orphan children. It was such a unique regency and was just what I needed.

Best book I’ve read in a while! Great story with a refreshing and well thought through plot with very sweet and swoony moments while still keeping it clean. The FMC is a force who doesn’t bow to those undeserving and quickly became one of my all time favorite characters! Her best friend also gets her happily ever after which ads some fun. The MMC has a wonderful story of redemption - a prodigal gentleman you will love and be cheering for by the end. Well done Jennie Goutet.

A clean story. Another excellent story from Jennie, part of the multi author ’Batchelors of Blackstone’ series.
As ever the characters are well developed, and the storyline is not the typical one which enhances the story for me. John has been living a rakish life and by trying to do the right thing ends up being blackballed from clubs and society at the hands of an Earl. Knowing the Earl is not how he seems John endeavours to uncover the Earl’s true colours and ends up working in an orphanage and falling for the Earl’s daughter who is regularly there. Following their growing feelings whilst John is incognito works well and was enjoyable. The Blackstone Club is definitely a different men’s club. I look forward to the other books on this series.

story of redemption

This is a lovely story of redemption. John was going through life without a care for anyone but himself until misfortune happened. I loved how you see his growth throughout the story. I enjoyed reading his path to a better man and the romance that developed between him and Geny.

This was a great start to a series I'm now definitely going to keep on my radar!

This book has got a little bit of everything - a reformed rake, a sweet romance, a secret identity and a revenge plot to uncover some fraudulent doings - and it made for a fun read! Geny is just so sweet and I really liked her and John's relationship and how they fell for each other. Their chemistry was great and I loved John for trying to be more of a gentleman than he had been in the past but also being completely smitten with our girl. Overall a fun, sweet read that I enjoyed!

I'm thoroughly enjoying this multi-author series! Each book can be read independently, but they truly shine when experienced together. The couple at the heart of the story is delightful; John is on a quest to unravel a mystery while seeking redemption. Lady Eugenie is simply charming, with her sweet and caring nature. The writing is exceptional and adds richness to the narrative.

This is such a fun multi-author series and each book works as a stand alone story. Bachelors of Blackstones's are men who have been rejected by some of the other Gentlemen's Clubs. Either they weren't accepted or they were a member that was thrown out. Lord Blackstone is a really quirky man who invites those men to join his club. The decor is strange with taxidermy animals all over and some are wearing outfits. Also Lord Blackstone seems to know a lot of what's going on in London and he manages to help many of these outcasts fix their problems.

This story starts out with John Aubin who has been living as a rake for years. On the way to visit his brother he overhears a conversation where a powerful earl was going to make a deal that would hurt other investors. John tried to help by revealing the situation to one of the lords involved. Instead of being thanked, he was blackballed and called a liar. He lost his club membership and he basically was driven out of society. John decides to try to find evidence in an orphanage that the earl owns to prove his corruption. He goes by his birth father's name and gets a job there as a steward. He never planned on meeting the earl's kind and beautiful daughter who comes weekly to help out in the orphanage.

Lady Eugenia Stanich is not close to her father. He is too busy with his businesses to give her much time. The only time he notices her is when he finds a potential spouse for her. The situation has grown worse since the death of her mother who was actively involved in helping the Foundling Asylum that her husband had founded. Geny spends a lot of time at the asylum helping teach the students. That is where she feels a connection to her mother. When the new steward came to work at the Asylum, Geny stepped in to meet him. She is surprised because he carries himself as a gentleman even though he says he is not one.

Geny looks forward to seeing John when she comes to visit the children. She is beginning to have feelings for him. John is also beginning to have feelings for Geny and being around her has helped him change the way he was living. Will their growing relationship be destroyed when she finds out that he has been lying to her and trying to destroy her father? Will John find the proof he needs to clear his name?

I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.

📚✨ BOOK REVIEW ✨📚
Title: A Gentleman’s Reckoning
Series: Bachelors of Blackstone
Author: Jennie Goutet
Genre: Regency Romance
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5 to 4/5)

📝 My Thoughts:
This was a lovely, character-driven story full of heart and quiet strength. John Aubin has lost his place in society after daring to expose corruption. With nothing left but his name and a mission, he assumes a new identity to seek justice from the man who ruined him. That path leads him to a foundling asylum and to Lady Eugenia Stanich.

“Geny” is devoted and quietly strong, a woman who has poured her heart into the orphanage that gives her life meaning. While her father commands respect in society, he has always been distant at home, and it is in this place, among the children, that she truly feels connected to the legacy of her late mother. She is not drawn to charm or smooth words, but John’s sincerity, along with his mysterious past, unsettles her in ways she did not expect.

For John, what begins as a calculated plan for revenge slowly becomes a test of character. Geny’s unwavering kindness and conviction force him to confront the man he has become and the man he wants to be. But the closer he gets to her, the heavier his secret becomes.

The setting was a beautiful part of the story. I loved how the orphanage brought the characters together and revealed who they really were.

🔖 Favorite Quote:
“I came to tell you of all the ways I am not worthy to be your brother.” …
“Now use this reprieve to your advantage and go on acting honorably. Or, as our Lord would say, ‘Go forth and sin no more.’”

📌 Final Verdict:
This story isn’t fast-paced, but its steady, reflective rhythm creates space for meaningful character growth and emotional depth. A tender and rewarding read for those who value nuance and sincerity. Now let’s talk about that cover. It is doing exactly what it is supposed to do: a man with perfectly tousled hair and a stare that says he has a complicated past, and somehow, I am more than okay with unraveling it. Let’s just say if he showed up looking like that, I’d pause my book, put down my tea, and let myself be charmed without losing my footing. 😉

Absolutely loved A Gentleman’s Reckoning! This Bachelors of Blackstone’s series is quickly becoming a favorite with the eccentric Lord Blackstone as a delightful fixture in each standalone story. In this heartfelt Regency, there’s a rake in need of redemption, love at first sight, hidden identity, opposites attract, & revenge versus forgiveness. I thoroughly enjoyed John’s & Geny’s swoon worthy, unique romance that kept me eagerly reading.

Once a charming London rake, John Aubin finds himself an outcast in Society when he overhears Lord Goodwin’s shady business dealings & attempts to expose him. It unfortunately backfires & he’s suddenly ousted from his clubs & becomes a social pariah. Seeking revenge, he takes a position under an assumed name at Goodwin’s orphan asylum to unearth fraudulent dealings & clear his name. The only flaw in his plan is Goodwin’s lovely daughter whose goodness & love for the orphans immediately endears John to her.

Lady Geny didn’t believe in love at first sight until she met John. Despite their disparity in stations, she’s drawn to him & sees his admirable qualities. As their romance blooms, John’s troubled by his deceit & desire to see her father ruined. When John’s true identity is finally revealed, will Geny be able to forgive him?

John’s transformation was truly inspirational. As he works with the orphans & is influenced by Geny & Lord Blackstone’s Club, he sees his own follies & becomes a better person. I loved seeing his path to redemption & reconnection with his brother & those he wronged. The chemistry between him & Geny crackles with romantic tension. I enjoyed how they were so drawn to each other & Geny’s boldness in pursuing her happily ever after.

Lord Blackstone is the unsung hero in all of these stories. The club he’s created is a refuge for men who’ve been rejected by Society & need a second chance. But, the caveat is their misdeeds must not be insurmountable, or they are innocently accused by Society. I love the way these men support & help each other as they find love & second chances. I can’t wait to read all of their stories.

Highly recommend! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author but also purchased through Kindle Unlimited. All opinions are my own & voluntarily provided.

So charming and delightful!

John Aubin may have been a rake but that didn't stop him from doing a good deed. Unfortunately, that act led him to lose everything and in an attempt to vindicate himself, he takes a job with an assumed name at an orphan asylum in order to exact revenge and expose a powerful lord's corruption. The last thing he expected was to become entranced by the beautiful woman...who also happens to be the lord's daughter.

Lady Eugenia finds joy and satisfaction in helping at the orphanage that her father founded for her mother. She has never found a man who seems to care about helping the children as much as she does until she meets the new supervisor who seems to be different than other men she has met but who also seems to be guarding secrets about his past.

What you'll love:
Regency era
reformed rake
forbidden love
dual pov
different social classes
chemistry and tension
the carriage ride
Lord Blackstone’s club
swoony romance

This book was such a breath of fresh air! I can't think of another Regency romance that is similar. The plot, the tropes, and the setting at the orphan asylum were so unique and made this book so hard to put down!

I LOVE the reformed rake trope but you rarely see it in sweet romance. It was all tastefully done and you only see glimpses and hints of his former life in the first chapter, but what a powerful and beautiful redemption story for John! He and Geny were such a perfect match with her understanding and patience and his determination to live a better life and be a better man. Loved the influence and growing friendship with Lord Blackstone and the other men at the club.

And of course I loved the sweet, gentle, but oh so swoony romance between two endearing characters! All their little moments together became something amazing and beautiful and their happily ever after was absolutely worth the wait!!

This is part of an interconnected series but is a standalone. Can't wait to read the rest of the stories surrounding the Bachelors of Blackstone's!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

A Gentleman’s Reckoning is everything you could possibly want in a forbidden romance!

John Aubin had been living a wasteful life as a rake when he happened to overhear a conversation involving a member of the peerage deceitfully acquiring investments for projects that he then allocated the money elsewhere. When he goes to expose this man, he is rebuffed, barred from the ton, and his reputation ruined. Trying to regain his good reputation, he gets hired into the position of steward in the foundling asylum that is run by the man who caused his ruin, but ends up falling in love with the man’s daughter, Eugenia. Caught between his growing affection for her and a need to clear his reputation, John struggles between what truly matters most to him.

Eugenia has a deep love for service, especially towards the founding asylum her father and late mother started. While working there, she grows close to John Aubin, unaware that he is seeking to expose her father’s misdeeds.

When the truth finally comes out, John and Eugenia both have difficult choices to make.

John has a heart of gold that grows even more endearing as he grows closer to Eugenia and begins to come into his own values. He is protective, intelligent, and caring, seeking to do what is right by all those he knows.

Eugenia is a beautiful person and wonderful example of the charity we should be showing to others. She cares not for the opinion of society and does everything she can to help those in need. Her care towards the people in her life is dictated by their character, not societal standing. It was refreshing to see a character so unbothered by status.

John and Eugenia’s relationship blossomed beautifully throughout this story, with both of them showing strength, care, and compassion towards others.

This is a must read for everyone who loves regency and definitely my favorite of the series so far.

Thank you to Ms. Goutet for including me on her ARC team, all opinions expressed are my own.

An absorbing regency story proved very captivating owing to its compelling elements — a notorious rake, an illegitimate child, a setting in an asylum for orphans, and a society so unforgiving that it cuts off any who fall from grace, and a peculiar viscount with an exclusive gentlemen's club consisting of blackballed members and taxidermy. A fantastic story of redemption and potential redemptions, except for Mr. Dowling of course.

John Aubin gets the cut from society after his failed attempt to expose an earl of misdeeds against his peers. Determined to redeem as good of a name a skilled card-playing, charming rake can have, he sets aside his adopted name and takes up his birth name to infiltrate the earls' asylum for orphans that is suspected to be misappropriating donated funds. Pouring over ledgers for proof —his focus repeatedly diverted by the Earl’s daughter. Lady Eugenia is enigmatic, far too interested in the plight of the foundlings for a young lady of breeding and possesses a nervous grace in his company and upon witnessing her display affection toward the orphans warms his heart and steals his attention in a way none of the women of the ton or lady of easy virtue has ever done.

Lady Eugenia, Geny to few, lives a solitary life after mother has passed, her brother away at Eton, and her father is distant and austere. Her best friend's visits and her work with the orphanage makes her life fulfilling. Normally her controlled composure is easily accomplished but the new steward of finances is handsome but too gentlemanlike in his manner for one of such humble station. Despite herself, she feels both a restless unease and a dangerous comfort in his presence—an easy familiarity that ought not come so swiftly nor so sweetly.

I read this as an arc ebook, I ordered the physical copy because I loved it so.

A Gentleman’s Reckoning is a wonderful redemption story full of regret, revenge, forgiveness, romance, and heart. I was hooked from the beginning. John Aubin, a gentleman who is a little bit of a rake, is caught in a bad situation and gets cast out of society for trying to do the right thing. Under a false name, John sets out for revenge by becoming the new steward at the foundling asylum but never thought he’d be victim of loosing his heart in the process.

Lady Eugenia Stanich, Geny to her friends, is a woman with the purest heart who spends her time helping the children at the foundling asylum her mother started years earlier. She hopes to find a gentleman that shares her passion for the children and someone to share her life with.

John and Geny have an instant connection upon their first meeting. But what are they to do when John realizes Geny is the daughter of the man he is trying to ruin and Geny finds out John is not who says he is? I really did not see how John and Geny were going to be able to follow their hearts in this situation.

Jennie Goutet did a wonderful job with the intricacies of this story. I enjoyed how both John and Geny found love in an unexpected place and eventually followed and were true to their hearts. It was a pleasure to follow their blooming relationship. I felt it endearing that John truly cared for the orphans and it wasn’t just for show as part of his revenge.

This was a story that touched my heart! A Gentleman’s Reckoning will stick with me.

My favorite things: the original storyline, the carriage ride, the accident, the other members of Blackstone's club, and especially John and Geny!

- Regency romance
- Protective reformed rake MMC
- Gentle hearted but strong FMC
- Love at first sight
- Strangers to more

When John's life is turned upside down by an attempt to do the right thing, he sets out to bring to light the secrets of the man whose bad deed he had tried to thwart. That takes him to the Earl of Goodwin's foundling asylum - and throws him into company with the Earl's daughter. And unlike almost anyone he's ever known, she seems to really care for the foundlings, which touches his heart. But he knows that his revenge will preclude him ever having a chance with her - yet without it, he's still an outcast from society and a man her father will never accept. Can he find any way to be with the woman he's soon forced to admit he loves?

I have to admit to nearly being put off altogether by the prologue, not because of anything terrible but because John didn't present at all as the sort of person I wanted to spend time with. Fortunately, I trusted the author and kept going, because that night changed him drastically and he became very well worth knowing. I loved watching him and Geny developing their seemingly doomed relationship (even if only he realised it was), and particularly seeing him getting 're-illusioned' after a most unpleasant time rejected by all and sundry. And of course, best of all was seeing them finally overcome the various obstacles and reach their well-deserved happily ever after. A delightful read, heart-warming and encouraging. Note that the books in this series are completely independent, connected only by the heroes all being members of the same odd club. Looking forward to more of the series - and more by the author! Recommended.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

I absolutely loved the way Jennie wrote this reformed rake’s story. I was immediately pulled in and when John was blackballed from the gentlemen’s clubs, I was eagerly waiting to see how Lord Blackstone would help this rake of a man. And it did not disappoint!!

John would’ve never expected his plot for revenge would turn into him falling in love with the one woman he dared never have.

John Aubin , though sweet hearted, is a rake. He spends his nights gambling, with women, and wasting away his inheritance from his mother. When he overhears a Lord with information that could hurt other peers, he attempts to do the right thing but ends up getting shunned from society and blackballed from the clubs due to his ‘slander’. He immediately begins his revenge…and it leads him to a most unexpected outcome.

Lady Eugenia (Geny) is a compassionate, selfless, woman who does all she can to continue with her mother’s foundling asylum. She uses her money to buy the orphans things they need along with spending her time making them clothing. When a new steward, John Rowles, is hired to help the asylum she finds herself with unforeseen feelings of a man beneath her station, but who acts very much like a gentleman. She reveals her feelings to him, but when she finds out his true identity, she faces a heartbreaking decision, support her father or forgive the man who has her heart.

Reasons to love this story:
♥️A reformed rake
♥️Instant connection
♥️Strong FMC
♥️Story of forgiveness
♥️Secret identity
♥️Overcoming hardships
♥️Family is more than blood relatives
♥️Swoon worthy moments
♥️The epilogue 🫠♥️

This is truly a sweet story and one that will bring a smile to your heart! ♥️

Thank you to the author for a gifted copy. All thoughts are my own.
