Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
Honestly I’m started to get a bit emotional as I veer closer and closer to current and what might be the last true dragon ball super or dragon ball volumes period. It’s been an incredible ride with still so much back reading content I can absorb but it almost seems surreal to think this series might just end soon. As for the actual issue this one was far stronger and more put together than the last two. Orange Piccolo and cell Max’s appearance kind of stole most of the show, but I loved the tongue in cheek “battle” Dr.hedo had below his base and like always I’m happy to see the androids realize just who the real villains are. Also I’m not gonna lie if pan is this strong now imagine her grown up she might low key be inevitably the strongest saiyan. 4.25/5
The great second action-packed part of Superhero. I wanted to give this book 4.5 stars. The only reason I had to round it down was because, as stated before, the colour change in power-ups does NOT work in black and white books. The fight between Goku and Vegeta on Lord Beerus' planet. Piccolo, Gohan, Kuririn, Goten, Trunks, and Pan are taking on Dr. Hedo him Gammas and the Red Ribbon Army. Even though there are a couple of awakenings on the heroes side. The Red Ribbon Army awaken their own monster.
Gloriously goofy if that's how you like your Dragon Ball. Gohan, Pan and Piccolo are the focus which is what will make or break this volume for readers. The superhero spin is less of a focus here, but it's still prevalent in tone and narrative. However, it has crazy power ups and power downs, and by the end, it feels more like Dragon Ball Z than it has in a while.
A boring volume that brings Pan into play in a silly scheme to get San Gohan to quickly grow his powers and give readers a reason to care about anything that goes on.
Piccolo also gets a ridiculous upgrade that just makes you wish this series would get cancelled sooner rather than later.
The volume ends with some Saiyaman nonsense, further proving the poor comedy the series desperately seeks to strive off of.
As we speed towards the end of Dragon Ball Super (due to Akira Toriyama's death) it looks like we may or may not come to a good conclusion. But... I will respect the ending for the memory of Toriyama-san. Two more Volumes I think... Highlights: - Goku, Vegeta, and Broly continue to train with Whis and Beerus. Vegeta comes to the realization that meditation should help him overcome his physical limits, as he must train his mind. - Piccolo gets Shenron to unlock his latent potential, creating Orange Piccolo, who is able to hold his own against Gamma #1 and #2. - The Red Ribbon Army goes after Pan, but as Piccolo has infiltrated them, she is never in any real danger. They want to draw Gohan out so they can destroy him. - When Magenta attacks Pan with a gun, Gamma 1 and 2 switch sides - Magenta wakes Cell Max, upsetting Dr Hedo, and the battle against the fighters begin.
Can't wait to see how things unfold. Might jump ahead before releases and read online. Recommend.
It is wild that Vegeta, Goku, and Broly could finish the Earth drama in one quick punch. I get that they have to make reasons why the strongest people in the group dont just finish everything, and let the less strong people have growth, but the reason they didnt come over was a little stupid haha.
Is it just me or are these volumes just getting more and more childish? Or is the series so insane on powerscaling that at this point we have to see everything in a tongue and cheek way?
Either way, I am sad the next book I will read is the latest book that will be out for a long time... RIP Toyiama, you brilliant man.
Unfortunately it gets as silly as it can get without anything interesting happening besides Pan being kidnapped to bring Gohan to remember what it's like to fight and to amplify his powers and whatnot, and all of it is silly, with Gotten and Trunks along for the ride being "Superheroes".
I'm really waiting for something serious to happen. The last arc was amazing and now it got really dull, with maybe 2-3 fun to read scenes, like Piccolo transforming and the action, and that's for the artwork alone.
Piccolo continues his undercover work, Pan gets kidnapped, and Gohan and the gang (Goten, Trunks, 18, and Krillin) join the fight. I’m glad the manga keeps the story somewhat similar to the film here - mainly, not having Goku and Vegeta on Earth allows the other Z fighters some room to develop.
Again, something that I liked in this chapter is how they were able to blend the manga style to that of the Superhero film. Yes, I get that the animation style used in the Broli film was super nice 2d animation, but the volume does a great job at merging both art styles.
It's a fun volume but is a retelling of Dragon Ball Super Hero (the movie) in Manga form. The art is on the Toriyama style and doesn't change. The plot itself is ok, I enjoy the focus on Picolo and Gohan but the lack of any real story with Goku and Vegeta was a little meh for me. I'm a fan of the series and will continue all around. I recommend if you are reading the series, if not, just stick with the movie. Grade: B
Still recapping this stupid Superhero movie. At least it’s not CG-animated (thank God!).
I don’t think there were many new scenes, even after rewatching the movie earlier this year, but even if there were, it wouldn’t make up for the rest of this lame-o storyline.
Gohan and Piccolo have always ruled, so I’m here for them.
9/10 they’re basically including the super hero movie into the manga. Piccolo asks shenron to unlock his hidden potential to face gamma 1 and 2 again. Also? Bulma gets her cosmetic surgeries through shenron, fits today’s society lol.
It seems there’s few a differences between the film and manga though. A difference I caught was piccolo sneaking into Hedo’s army meeting and them being the ones to seek Gohan and kidnap pan. I’m not 100% but I feel like in the movie it was piccolo’s idea in order to knock some sense into Gohan. In this case, they are trying to kill Gohan first by luring him in using Pan. Piccolo disguised as a red ribbon army soldier and another soldier are on a mission to kidnap pan after school.
The plan to kidnap and trigger Gohan works but he still is weak and not locked in to his fighting techniques. Piccolo threatens pan to force Gohan to LOCK IN and he does for a moment until gamma 1 and 2 try to jump Gohan then piccolo jumps in. I don’t remember if the movie went down the same way but I feel like it wasn’t exactly the same way. Basically it’s a 2 on 2 and they are trying to talk sense into the gammas about Hedo being evil as they fight but they won’t listen. One of the gamma’s almost defeats piccolo until he taps into his hidden potential from shenron. BIG ORANGE PICCOLO IS HERE !
Trunks tries telling bulma about Hedo’s plan and how piccolo isn’t safe. She asks him and Goten to locate piccolo but they both are airheads and can’t lock on to people chi well and mistakenly sense dende instead lol. They contact killin and find the red ribbon army hideout and go to assist.
As they fend off gamma 1 and 2 with piccolo’s new transformation, gamma’s realize the guy who funded all this; Magenta, is the evil one and actually has evil intents. He runs off to activate cell max as Dr hedo tries to stop him. He manages to press the activation key before being taken down by hedo. Cell max emerges and Goten and trunks go after him first dressed as superhero’s called saiyaman X-1 and X-2.

It's hilarious reading this volume's chapters on MangaPlus because a lot of the comments are complaining about how much time is being wasted recapping the movie. The arc has stretched to nine chapters by the end of this volume, six-ish of which cover the movie more or less 1:1, including this entire volume. If I'm not mistaken, the Super Hero movie came out during the manga's hiatus, so people following monthly only got a small handful of chapters of original content before being forced to stall for almost an entire year (six chapters = six months, and the adaptation will continue for a few chapters yet) to cover a movie that's less than two hours long....
Toyotarou brings very little to Super Hero. Some of the action scenes seem expanded from the movie, but mostly seem to copy the storyboards, which I'm really thinking were created by Toriyama himself, or someone else entirely who is still way better than Toyo, as the action in this volume is choreographed in a manner far superior to what we saw in the Moro and Heeter arcs. For all the new Saiyaman stuff we had earlier, and which is teased to continue next volume before Fat Gotenks, Toyo seems to have no interest in fleshing other parts out for other characters; namely, I'm upset we don't get more panel-time for Magenta's super-form.
I'd be tempted to rate this lower just for offering very little in place of just rewatching the movie, but... honestly, this is just one of the best volumes of Toyo's manga, essentially because it's just Tori at work instead of any shitty OCs. Some of the coolest moments in all of the Super manga include Orange Piccolo's CHAD stance and Cell Max screaming, which are just taken from the movie, but they're so fucking cool, especially in contrast to DUDE GOAT-CELL LMAO, DUDE WHAT IF BABY WAS A MISTAKEN HERO AND COULDN'T TRANSFORM, and DUDE WHAT IF BOUJACK HAD BROLY'S BERSERKER POWER.

Broly is a Saiyan that born in Planet Vegeta. King Vegeta send him and his father to planetoid. After several years, Lemo and Cheelai who is also one of Frieza's Army found them and bought them to Frieza. Frieza used Broly to kill Goku and Vegeta. Goku and Vegeta managed to defeat Broly by fusing into Gogeta using the fusion dance. Then, Goku bring Broly to Planet Beerus where Frieza can't reach it along with Lemo and Cheelai.
Back to Earth, Piccolo used the Dragon Balls to draw out his potential. He then infiltrated again to know about the Red Ribbon Army's plan. The Red Ribbon Army wants to kidnap Pan in order to lure Gohan. Piccolo helps "kidnap" Pan and managed to lure Gohan to Red Ribbon Army base. Gohan fights Gamma #1 but he is losing as his battle instinct already closed long ago. Piccolo acts like hurting Pan and Gohan's power burst instead. Gamma #2 join the battle but Piccolo butt in. Gamma #1's sense of justice become shaky after they cannot differentiate which side is evil. Suddenly, Piccolo unleashed his power and he become orange in color. The fights stop and Magenta runaway to the basement to activate the Cell Max. Dr. Hedo chase him but he failed to stop the activation of Cell Max. Cell Max emerged from the underground and the size is so big. Bulma, Goten, Trunks, Krillin and Android #18 come to help. Goten and Trunks fight Cell Max in Saiyaman form.

Another great volume and we continue the adaptation of the movie and here we have Pan being kidnapped and all that plus Piccolo and his new powers, Gohan to the rescue, the battle vs Gamma and some amazing transformations and heroic scenes and the beginning was a fun Goku ch., we see what they are upto and why they didn't join this arc and its all fun and as a Gohan fan this was like the best moment in the manga for me seeing my boy transform like that and omg that last page his arch-nemesis cell returns so that was epic!! I can't wait to read the next volume, because this was just great from everything and I am loving the art!!
Good volume, only bit that I didn't really like, because as with the previous volume the police and Krillin know and are looking for the Red Ribbon Army and when Gohan went Ultimate/Mystic he broke the hologram and the police just happen to suspect the lake was being used and had a live feed of it? How did they suspicion but not find out? There's a giant Red Ribbon logo on it! And if they use the same logo for Red Pharmaceuticals that just makes it more dumb! Also if they're live feeding it didn't they notice soldiers and vehicles coming and going? Having Krillin be the one that got Dr Hedo arrested was fine and a nice touch but the rest should have just been left like it is in the movie.
As a fan that likes classic Dragon Ball more than the post-sayan Saga, this volume is pretty refreshing: it's like a what if universe where the Cell Saga had happened with the classic tone. It's nothing new, yet, the execution is amazing.
I can see why the Z phase fans don't like it, but really, they already get too much. Let me have a bit more of this, please.
