The Heartbeat Heist

Rate this book
Evelyn is a master thief, her alias—the Bird of Bordeaux—is whispered with awe and fear throughout the underworld of swindlers and assassins. When a shadowy figure known as the Reaper offers her the heist of a lifetime, she’s tempted to accept.

The target?
A relic of dark magic, sealed deep within the cursed tunnels beneath Paris.

The reward?
A fortune large enough to restore the Vineyard, the orphanage that raised her, and a chance to avenge her parents' murder.

The catch?
She won’t be working alone.
Her partner, Jaq, is as clever as he is infuriating. They don't trust each other and they don't need to. But as secrets unravel and an unexpected attraction flares between them, the job becomes far more complicated than Evelyn ever planned.

In the end, it's not the relic or the risk that haunts her, but the love she could've had—if she hadn't been prepared to betray him.

Somehow, in these gloomy chambers filled with nothing but death and decay, I felt a surge of optimism, like we truly could conquer the world if we tried. Together.

This was actually pretty good! I loved the writing style. It was so addictive and the plot was THERE. The only reason why it took me so long to read this was cause life was super busy🙂‍↕️. But there were a few things keeping this book from getting 4-5 stars.

First of all, I felt like this book was kind of rushed? Well the beginning was nice we had all the background info but as the book was coming to an end… well it just ended too quickly! One moment we were in a grand heist and then the next we were walking and laughing together as if we weren’t kidnapped a few pages ago😭🙏. I also didn’t see the character development that much, the book was mostly focused on the conflict but I definitely wanted more of the main character- Evelyn.

I also didn’t really like romance. Yes the kiss scenes were toe-curling and maybe had me smiling but it was ALSO rushed. It just happened too soon. It was kind of like giving Kai Azer and Paedyn (some of you might think that’s a good thing but if you know me I’m a proud Powerless hater😭).

The plot twists were kind of easy to foreshadow and I think the ending was supposed to be sad but I wasn’t really heartbroken. I really liked this book but I wasn’t THAT invested in it.

But besides the negative I really liked the fantasy aspect of this book and the lore. Of course the backstories were definitely rushed at the end and they kind of seemed like a last minute thought.

So honestly the main problem of this book was that it just felt rushed but it was super close to five stars. That ending was completely unexpected and would make any reader want the next book.

🌹⋮ ⌗ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭
Mentions of s3x but no s3x itself. Forbidden love, an assassin FMC (cause she needs money for the orphanage she lives in- the casual backstory) oh and the MMC is also an assassin. A few kiss scenes but nothing too descriptive. Violence, murdering, other “scary” stuff but nothing that’s traumatizing. I believe there was cussing but I totally forgot so in other words not too much cussing and barely noticeable. And well there was that one scene where Jaq unzipped his pants and pretended to be a drunk man peeing in a bush but I don’t think that’s too bad. Also, poverty (you know main characters and their backstory’s😓), mentions of drug, blood (nothing too gory), other things people might find “sensitive” blah blah.
⤿ Age I recommend: 13+

🌹⋮ ⌗ 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬

꒰🫀Evelyn ⁞ She was an okay character. Nothing too special.

꒰🫀Jaq ⁞ I WANT THIS MAN BACK IN BOOK TWO PLEASEEEE.

I would definitely recommend this book for a short romantasy read that might help with your book slump. But if you want something jaw-dropping fantasy this might not be for you😓.

I love reading about a good heist and this book was all I needed. I love the fact that the author mixed history lore, magic and science into a whole plot without making it seem like too much.

Would I call this a fantasy? I don't know maybe🤷🏾‍♀️. The world building wasn't great it didn't go into that much detail which sucks.😶

The fmc, Evelyn known as the 'Bird of the Bordeaux' is a well known thief who's trying to make enough money so that the orphanage won't be closed down

She's given the heist of a life time and the opportunity to get revenge on the man who killed her parents when she was a child.

She has always worked solo but for this heist she's forced to team up with Jaq our MMC who btw is a shadow daddy 🤭✨.

Their banter together was so much fun to read and adds to the tension between them.🙈♥️.

The problem with the book is that it's too predictable.🤷🏾‍♀️ I already knew the plot twist from a mile away and I don't understand what she did at the end or why she did it.

She was chasing after someone who was killing innocent people but in turn did the same fucking thing.🙄😒

Hypocrisy at its finest if you ask me. For that reason it went from a 4 star to a 3 💁🏾‍♀️. Will I still wait for the 2nd book? Fuck yes because I need answers. 🚶🏾‍♀️🙂

Thank you netgalley and Victory Editing for giving me this wonderful Earc to give you an honest review.

“Please don’t shoot me for this,” he muttered. Then he kissed me.
𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
This follows Evelyn, who is essentially forced to become a pickpocket and thief out of necessity because she’s an orphan growing up in an alternate-history version following the French Revolution. To survive, she’s had to steal to feed herself. AND because she’s become so skilled, she’s earned the moniker “The Bird of Bordeaux.” She’s also morally grey and will kill if someone gets in her way. One day, she gets a mysterious letter inviting her to steal a magical artefact... because somehow in this world, magic is real. The pay is enormous, but she can’t do it alone. Since the heist involves venturing into a cursed, booby-trapped catacomb, she seeks help from Jaq, a shadow daddy who suddenly appears at one of the balls she’s attending.

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
The thing with this book is there’s not really anything wrong with it… It’s just not the type of book I personally enjoy anymore, and I found myself more and more annoyed as I was reading.

I don’t usually vibe with a badass FMC anymore. Too often it slides into the “pick-me, I’m not like the other girls” cliché, which is exactly how Evelyn came across. She’s too resourceful and too good at everything, always the best of the best despite not having any magic, and that made her harder for me to connect with.

Essentially, Evelyn's main goals are:
1. To financially support the orphanage she grew up in and still financially supports.
2. To protect and guide a younger little girl called Claira, whom she views as a little sister
3. To get revenge on the man who killed her family... an elusive figure whose identity is only revealed halfway through the story. (and it's not like she is a hypocrite killing people who are in her way)

As it turns out, Jaq also wants revenge on the same man.

SOOOOO WHERE DID THIS LOSE ME?
Strike One: the badass FMC cliché, which I have already covered. It feels so Young Adult 2020...

Strike Two: the whole book is told in a single POV. NOW I can tolerate this in some stories, but when you’re selling a romance and the MMC is written as secretive and elusive so we, on purpose, do not know much about him, and then we’re left only with his observed actions through the main character, it doesn't really sell the character. I couldn’t get into his head, so I kept questioning his motives and waiting for him to betray or double-cross her or for some big twist to be revealed. I didn't know if his attraction to her was fake or real, so it made it really hard to buy into.

Strike Three: the instant, very sexual attraction. Jaq is constantly flirtatious, everything he says is laced with innuendo or allure, and I never quite felt their chemistry or where it came from because of strike 2...

Strike Four: the pacing and placement of scenes just didn't always work...

Strike Five: The predictable twist. I called the massive twist at 46%. When I was right, I felt disappointed because it just felt way to easy and PREDICTABLE. It would have been better with a twist on the twist, so that "obvious twist was just a red herring".

Now, some aspects DID work... the writing itself was good. It balanced action, character development, and some unique magical elements. I loved the atmosphere and the vibes, which gave the sense of being in that historical Renaissance-era France. I also enjoyed the way the worldbuilding and setting were woven into the plot, even if some felt a little modern. The writing kept me engaged even when the characters and plot frustrated me.

𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▶ Reluctant Allies to Lovers
▶ Forced Proximity
▶ Feminine Rage
▶ Secret and Hidden Identity
▶ Morally Grey FMC
▶ Shadow Daddy
▶ Heist

and 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▷ Nicknames
▷ "Good Girl"
▷ Cages her with his arms
▷ Doorframe Lean
▷ Alcohol Play
▷ She Stabs Him

Overall, it’s an OK book that just didn’t click with me because of my Strikes... and to be fair, I gave it 2 whole Strikes more than the normal 3...

“The Heartbeat Heist,” by Florence Gray

OMG this book was so good! Morally gray heroine thief who needs to do a heist and a shadow daddy MMC, perfect. The main characters’ banter was on point, and they are forced allies. Literally loved the peril and the twists and turns and the atmosphere with the Paris underground. The ending blew me away; I wouldn’t change anything in the book ever. 5 out of 5 stars.

“It seems you’re quite accustomed to the dark, but perhaps it’s what’s in the dark that makes the terror worthwhile.”

⭐️ 3/5

This book pulled me in with its mix of historical setting, subtle magic, and a romance that felt natural and forward throughout. The writing style was smooth and easy to follow, making it a fun read. But the ending? The character made a choice that felt totally out of step with everything that came before.

Set in an alternate 1815 France, Evelyn and Jaq are tasked with a dangerous heist under the streets of Paris where secrets, betrayal, and hidden magic linger in the shadows. Their reluctant partnership slowly shifts into romance, but their mission—and their choices—carry consequences that could change everything.

I really enjoyed the ride through most of this book. The writing was clear and easy to sink into, the pacing kept me turning pages, and the dynamic between Evelyn and Jaq had just the right amount of tension and warmth. The romance is absolutely front and center—sweet, steady, and believable, even without open-door scenes.

For the majority of the story, I was invested. It gave me what I wanted: a clever heist woven with slow-burn romance, and a unique alternate-history setting that didn’t feel overcomplicated. The balance between plot and character development worked well.

But the ending… no. One major character choice completely derailed it for me. It didn’t line up with their arc or the emotional groundwork laid throughout the book, and instead of feeling surprised, I felt confused and let down.

Thank you to Florence Gray and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC and the opportunity to share my honest review.

“To those as thick as thieves, the only blood that ever truly flows thicker than water”

“It seems you’re quite accustomed to the dark, but perhaps it’s what’s in the dark that makes the terror worthwhile.”

Rereading this was like jumping back into a Parisian fever dream. The banter still slaps, the catacombs still feel like a trap I’d fall into, and yes, Jaq’s shadow-daddy energy still has me heart-eying the page. Only thing—some parts still sprint through the worldbuilding and character layers too fast, like they’re bingeing ahead and leaving you starving for more. But the tension, those quiet betrayals, and the heist chaos? Still unmatched.

He wasn’t a hero. Virtue and morality were not his cup of tea, nor were they mine.

4.25 stars

This was a fun read I ended up finishing in one sitting. I loved the stabby Robin Hood vibes Evelyn gave.. and what's not to love with shadow daddy Jaq who also likes her stabby? Everyone is a little morally grey, there were heists, banter, AND forced proximity of one bed. I did see the one twist coming but not the second! Can't wait for the next one!

Favorite quotes:
“Do you argue for the sake of it, or do you enjoy driving women mad?”
Jaq cocked his head to the side. “I’m not sure. Is it working?”

“No matter what we see, no matter what we endure, I’m enduring it with you.”

“Maybe not to you,” I said, flashing my own blade. “But he’s my trouble.”

Okay well.

Overall, I mostly enjoyed reading this historical fantasy with a dash of romance (*not fantasy romance or romantasy by definition* if it matters to someone) book and thought it was interesting and compelling. Evelyn is the Bird of Bordeaux, a master thief, who gets the opportunity to get a little revenge and a lot of money by stealing a particular object. This task is set to her by a mysterious figure she calls The Reaper, and she works with a handsome sassy lad named Jaq. Along the way, we have some tension, some mystery, a surprise (?) shadow daddy, and a solid heist romp.

I want to focus on the world building for a bit. We are allegedly in a slightly magical realism/urban fantasy alternate timeline post French Revolution, and the occasional random date puts us somewhere either in the late 1790s or early 1800s? I would argue there wasn't a whole lot that squarely placed us in that time. The writing and dialogue felt very modern, and there were some timeline issues. I lost count of the number of times I googled "when was _______ invented?" (Mattresses with springs: 1870s; carabiners for climbing purposes: mid/late 1900s; eclairs: 1860s; female jumpsuits: 1930s, etc). Could this alternate timeline have included alternate invention timelines? Sure, I guess. That added up to consistently and liberally sprinkled anachronisms and I think there was a bit of a lost opportunity to really evoke and use that time period as a scene setter outside of corsets and a glimpse of Paris.

I was entertained throughout, however. I love a heist story. Until the ending. The ending peeved me and singlehandedly tipped this from a "I had fun and am in a good mood so a magnanimous four stars" to a did-not-stick-the-landing three: not including spoilers but I didn't care for it and personally thought it was senseless. I was hot and cold on Evelyn and Jaq throughout: I think there were some odd characterization choices that were random and either weren't always consistent or fleshed out enough. There were some twists that were pretty predictable, but also some that came out of nowhere for thin reasons.

Thanks to the author, NetGalley, and Victory Editing (god 🙏🏻and🤞🏻 that this doesn't sink my chances of getting approved in the future by Victory Editing) for the opportunity to review this ARC.

I really enjoyed this story. I loved the idea that it was based in France near the beginning of the 19th Century, a time steeped in cultural transformation and social upheaval. The careful merging of real, historical events and fantastical elements transports you straight to pre-revolutionary France, where the air was thick with the whispers of change and the promise of freedom. You instantly fall in love with the sharp wit of the main character, whose intelligence and charisma shine through even in the direst of situations, and her unwavering need to provide for the people she loves adds a poignant layer of depth to her journey. As she navigates the complexities of her world, her struggles are relatable, reminding us of the universal themes of love, sacrifice, and resilience, which grip the reader’s heart and pull them deeper into her enchanting tale.

I also found Jaq to be an enchanting character, who balances out the sharpness of Evelyn with his charming demeanor. His playful wit and subtle charm create an intriguing dynamic that complements Evelyn’s more intense personality. As the story unfolds, I find myself wanting to hear more about him, especially since he seems to hold all his cards close to his chest, revealing little of his true self to others. The mystery surrounding his past and motivations adds layers to his character, making him all the more compelling. The only glimpse into his vulnerability comes through his genuine feelings for Evelyn, which he doesn’t shy away from, contrasting beautifully with his otherwise guarded nature. This complexity makes me eager to discover what other depths Jaq might reveal as the narrative progresses.

Overall, I loved reading this book – finishing it in a single day – as I found myself engrossed in its pages. The plot flowed seamlessly from one event to another, captivating my attention and keeping me on the edge of my seat. Just when you think you know what is about to happen, the rug is expertly ripped from under your feet, leading you down unexpected paths. I truly believed I had figured out how it was going to end, but the incredible twist at the conclusion caught me completely off guard and had me floored, prompting me to reflect on the entire story. The author has definitely left it open for a second book, and I sincerely hope she takes the opportunity to release one, as I find myself deeply invested in these characters’ journeys; I’m not ready to leave Bordeaux behind just yet!

I would 100% recommend this book. It is such an easy read, with a captivating storyline that flows effortlessly from one chapter to the next, and the characters are easy to love, each possessing unique traits that make them relatable and endearing. The author has skillfully crafted a world where emotions run high, and the interactions between the characters are genuine, inviting readers to become deeply invested in their journeys and experiences. Whether you’re looking for an escape or a compelling narrative to immerse yourself in, this book delivers on all fronts.

Gray does a wonderful job of creating this fantasized and re-imagined alternative France in the wake of the Reign of Terror. Using Bordeaux as a backdrop, we sees how known thief "The Bird of Bordeaux" navigates this city of corruption. Our FMC, Evelyn, flies under the radar as this master thief knowing no one would ever suspect the Bird of being a woman. As a result, she slips through the cracks doing job after job.

After a particularly close call, where she also meets our MMC (Jaq), she is presented with the opportunity of a great heist and the opportunity to get revenge on the man who killed her parents when she was a child. She is forced to team up with Jaq, vowing to double cross him at the end of the job in order to take his earnings for herself. As the two grow closer, it becomes harder and harder for her actually put this plan into place. With stubborn and contradictory at times, Evelyn is a fun character at times to follow. Her banter with Jaq is fun and adds to the tension between the two of them.

The plot mixes together bits of magic, history, lore, and science as these two plot to get revenge on a known nemesis. However, the heist goes awry and they have to rely on their wits and each other to complete the mission. Gray does leave the reader on a rather interesting cliffhanger that makes you want to know exactly what happens next. I hope in the next book we can see more descriptions of the world around them and the magic that exists in this world.

Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my review!

Ok, that was fun. I love heist plots and when I saw this one had themes of fantasy and was set in wine country of France in the 1800s I was sold. This is a fun and quick read where just when you think you have the characters completely figured out you are thrown a truly wild ending. My biggest downside on this novel is that any time an author chooses to do a “shadow daddy” type trope you are going to equally attract one audience and then alienate others… I am on the side where seeing a MMC wielding shadows makes me immediately less excited about it because it feels like an easy fantasy element to grab for instead of coming up with something new. It felt out of place in this setting where none of the other characters had similar “powers”. I still don’t know how I feel about the ending but what I do know is it shocked me! It’s fun to be shocked. I’m going to continue following this author and watching what else she puts out, there’s definitely some talent there.

The Heartbeat Heist is a pulse-skipping blend of romance, rebellion, and razor-sharp suspense. Florence Gray delivers a heroine who steals more than hearts—she steals time, secrets, and maybe your sleep schedule. ;)

Set in a glittering world of underground auctions and whispered betrayals, this novel reads like Ocean’s Eleven crashed into The Night Circus—with a love story that’s as dangerous as it is delicious. Gray’s prose is sleek, her twists are wicked, and the emotional payoff? Worth every stolen moment.

If you love morally gray characters, high-stakes heists, and slow-burn tension that simmers until it scorches—this one’s a must-read.

✨Arc Review✨
Thank you to the author Florence Gray for sending me a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

-All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“Fear has no power over me when it comes to how I feel about you.”

I absolutely devoured The Heartbeat Heist. From the first chapter, it had me completely hooked—and by the end, I was breathless. This book is a bold, fast-paced fantasy full of secrets, betrayal, tension, and one of the most compelling morally gray main characters I’ve read in a long time.

Evelyn, the Bird of Bordeaux, isn’t your typical heroine—and that’s exactly why I loved her. She’s sharp, dangerous, and broken in all the best ways. Her decisions aren’t always good, and sometimes they’re downright brutal—but they always make sense. She’s doing what she has to in order to survive, and you can’t help but root for her, even when you’re not sure you should. That blurred moral line made her feel real, raw, and unforgettable.

The romance? Perfection. The chemistry between Evelyn and Jaq is electric—tense, witty, slow-burn, and absolutely addictive. Their dynamic adds so much depth to the story without ever taking over. It’s the kind of enemies-to-lovers tension that keeps you flipping pages just to see who will snap first.

Florence Gray’s world building is also a standout. Set in a magically re imagined post-revolutionary France, the atmosphere is rich with underground secrets, deadly politics, and magic that feels both beautiful and terrifying. The writing is cinematic, lyrical when it needs to be, and razor-sharp when it counts.

The plot moves like a heartbeat—fast, rhythmic, and impossible to ignore. Twists hit at just the right moment, and the ending left me in stunned silence. It was bold. It was brutal. And it was exactly right.

If you love morally complex characters, high-stakes heists, sharp dialogue, and romance that cuts deep, The Heartbeat Heist is a must-read. Five stars without hesitation.

💔 Morally Gray FMC (Female Main Character)
– Evelyn isn’t your classic “good girl.” She’s flawed, dangerous, and driven by revenge, survival, and loyalty in ways that blur the line between right and wrong.

💘 Enemies to Lovers
– Sparks fly between Evelyn and Jaq, who start off clashing and suspicious, but their chemistry simmers beneath every sharp exchange.

🕯️ Dark Academia Vibes / Gothic Fantasy
– Set in a post-revolutionary France steeped in blood and power, the tone is rich with mystery, shadowy catacombs, and magic that corrupts.

🩸 Revenge Quest / Personal Stakes
– Evelyn’s motivations run deep—this isn't just about money or glory. It's about justice, vengeance, and protecting what little she has left.

🔪 Forced Proximity
– They’re unwilling partners on a deadly heist, forced to trust each other despite their baggage—and it only adds to the tension.

Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A heist, plenty of twists and turns, so much longing and slow burn romance, characters that will draw you in and have you falling in love so immediately that’ll leave you wanting book two as soon as possible! That doesn’t even begin to describe the amazing world-building, fantastic characters growth, hilarious banter between characters, and an ending that’ll leave you gasping, so if all of that sounds like the perfect next read than I highly recommend grabbing a copy of The Heartbeat Heist today!

Evelyn is a thief… and a pretty good one at that. Her alias - The Bird of Bordeaux - is infamous, it strikes fear and grudging respect from all those who hear the name. Evelyn’s life goal wasn’t necessarily to become a thief but when she has people she loved who need coin to survive and a town that’s refused her help at every turn well she’s turned to what she’s good at… robbing the rich to feed the poor. And a mysterious man called the Reaper has just offered her the deal of a lifetime… but of course the deal of a lifetime comes with more than one danger and a partner. But for someone who has always worked alone Jaq is an unwanted obstacle on this mission. As they work together though Jaq proves he might just be worth a partnership with her after all. What seemed like a straightforward mission though has been anything but, and Evelyn’s feelings for Jaq will either be her saving grace or her inevitable downfall!

From page ONE this book had me enchanted! I loved our FMC, she was strong morally grey, but also everything she did was done with mostly good intentions. And I loved that she wasn’t afraid to put people in their place when they crossed or underestimated her or to protect those she loved fiercely! And Jaq was such a mysterious character everytime I thought I might have his character pinned down he’d do something to reintroduce that air of mystery that keeps you on your toes. The chemistry between Jaq and Eve was certainly not to be ignored! In fact you’ll be rooting for their romance from the second the two first swap words! Truly if you’re looking for a book that’s filled with mystery, a pinch of magic, more than one twist that’ll keep you dancing on your toes, a fantastic romance, and amazing characters I highly recommend adding this book to your TBR list ASAP!

Fantasy heist lovers, this one’s for you! This book hooked me from page one. It jumps right into the action with a fast paced, high energy start that made it hard to put down. I am a big fan of fantasy heist stories, so this one was right up my alley. The main plot centers on one big heist, but along the way there are plenty of smaller jobs that keep the tension and excitement going.
The whole story is told from Evelyn’s perspective, and I really enjoyed the first person POV. It was fascinating to watch her thoughts shift, especially when it came to her feelings about Jaq. Because everything is filtered through her perspective, she comes across as an unreliable narrator at times, contradicting herself in small ways.
Evelyn herself is a strong female main character who knows exactly how to handle herself. That becomes clear in the very first chapter. Throughout the story, she stands her ground and fights for her beliefs and survival for herself and the ones she loves in a time when women were often underestimated. The action never lets up, and I loved seeing her face challenges on her own terms. She does have some issues showing what she deems as weak, though.
Jaq was another standout character for me. He and Evelyn are alike in some ways but completely different in others, which made their dynamic even more entertaining. The two of them bicker almost every time they speak, and the banter was pure gold.
The romance takes more of a back seat to the main plot, but it is still woven in nicely. It is very much a “he falls first” situation, and since we are in Evelyn’s head the whole time, we get to watch her wrestle with and slowly shift her feelings about Jaq over the course of the story. I would have enjoyed a bit more build up of the relationship between the characters.
The setting is early 1800s France, and while most of the world building fits that period, the dialogue feels more modern. It did not bother me personally, but it is worth noting in case that matters to you.
The ending definitely threw me. I didn’t really understand the reasoning and was left with so many unresolved questions at the end of the book.
Overall it was an enjoyable read, with a thought provoking ending. 3.5 stars

Review: The Heartbeat Heist by Florence Gray (Out August 26, 2025)
The Heartbeat Heist is an exciting mix of high-stakes romance, rebellion, and intrigue. Florence Gray introduces readers to Evelyn, the enigmatic “Bird of Bordeaux”, a master thief navigating a glittering world of underground auctions and whispered betrayals. With a mysterious employer known only as The Reaper and a charismatic partner-in-crime named Jaq, Evelyn sets off on a mission full of secrets, risks, and unexpected twists.
Gray’s writing is slick and stylish, and the tension, romantic and otherwise, keeps the pages turning. If you enjoy morally gray characters, intricate heists, and slow-burn dynamics, this novel checks many boxes. The atmosphere is evocative, and the narrative momentum rarely falters.
That said, the worldbuilding left me with mixed feelings. The setting is described as a magical realism or light urban fantasy take on post-Revolutionary France, but this backdrop wasn’t consistently grounded in historical detail. The tone and dialogue felt distinctly modern, and frequent anachronisms (sprung mattresses, carabiners, eclairs, jumpsuits, etc.) were distracting. While this could be intentional due to the alternate timeline, it sometimes came across as underdeveloped rather than deliberate. A stronger integration of historical elements, beyond just corsets and vague references to Paris, could’ve enriched the setting and added depth.
Character-wise, I found myself going back and forth. Evelyn is compelling but occasionally inconsistent in her motivations and choices. Jaq’s charm is undeniable, but some of their dynamics felt underexplored or erratic. A few plot twists were predictable, while others felt abrupt or unearned.
And while the ride was entertaining, the ending didn’t quite land for me. Without spoiling anything, it felt a bit senseless and disconnected from the emotional investment built earlier in the story.
Overall, The Heartbeat Heist is a bold, entertaining read with great pacing, a memorable lead, and an immersive heist plot. While some of the historical and character details could be more refined, it’s still a fun and stylish book that will appeal to fans of morally gray protagonists and suspenseful storytelling.

I didn't love this book and found myself choosing to doom scroll instead of read which isn't like me.

There were lots of areas where commas were used unnecessarily and times when they weren't used. Grammar sets the tone.

While she does preface that it’s inspired by France it annoys me that she just renamed a popular nursery. One my grandmother sung to me. Alouette, Gentille Alouette. She renamed it Gentille Alouette Gentille. So sweet lark sweet. When the title is lark, sweet lark which makes grammatical sense. Also she’s called the bird of Bordeaux so why would he call her Alouette? Bird is oiseau. Like I get it you’re into French culture but girl do some googling

Her timeline is off, way off. Says she took on financial burden for the orphanage at age 14 but found Claira when she was 3 and they lived on the streets for a month until Evelyn tried to pickpocket Thea. Claira is 13 year younger than her…so Evelyn and Thea didn’t meet until she was 16….

Referring to a corset as a waist trainer was just weird…not only did women in that time NOT call them that but since this book supposedly has French influence you’d think she’s refer to it as a jump.

Also they are in France, ergo speaking French. The book is written in English so we can pretend we just all understand French. So why throw in French words? “Lower your bow, Alouette” why not say lower your bow, lark? Which also makes no sense since bird is oiseau.

British slang??? This and waist trainer took me right out. Like what?

The FMC is absolutely obnoxious, I found it hard to care about her. She's petulant and her hubris stinks.

She’s so conceited. Often mentions how exceptionally pretty she is and how she’s usually the most intelligent person in the room. Which is hilarious since she says the most obvious rebuttals.

Her hubris is eye roll inducing. Thinking being infamous means you’re worth your salt. When I’d assume being a thief and assassin you’d want to be as anonymous as possible. She was only known because she fucked up a heist and almost got herself caught. Which is exactly what happened when she met Jaq. Yet she thinks she’s better than him? She’s giving 15 yr old girl not 20 year old hardened orphan.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

The Heartbeat Heist by Florence Gray
Pub. date: 08/26/2025

Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

I am completely consumed by this story and it refuses to leave my head. Sharp, seductive, and brimming with danger, it’s the kind of book that pulls you in and won’t let you go.

Evelyn is bold, brilliant, and so alive on the page. She makes choices that had me gasping, laughing, and fully invested in her every move. Clever, daring, and layered with a heart that makes her unforgettable, she’s the kind of heroine you root for instantly.

And Jaq. Shadow Daddy energy doesn’t even begin to cover it. Protective, magnetic, endlessly frustrating, and completely swoon-worthy, every scene between him and Evelyn is electric. Their chemistry is intoxicating, and the tension had my pulse racing in the best way.

The world Florence Gray built is cinematic and immersive. Paris is dark, mysterious, and dangerous, dripping with tension and allure. The heist is perfectly orchestrated chaos—full of sharp twists, clever reveals, and high stakes that kept me breathless. Suspense and romance intertwine seamlessly, making this a story you cannot put down.

This is a must for your fall TBR. Thrilling, clever, swoony, and chaotic in all the right ways. I preordered my copy immediately because it deserves a permanent spot on my shelf, and I already know I will revisit Evelyn and Jaq’s story again and again.

“𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒏’𝒕 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒈𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏 𝒂 𝒎𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆.”

The Heartbeat Heist is a masterclass in tension, atmosphere, and swoony chaos. Evelyn and Jaq had me gasping, laughing, and holding my breath all at once. The world is cinematic, dangerous, and utterly addictive. I am obsessed and cannot wait to see what Florence Gray creates next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (3.5)

A morally grey thief. An infuriatingly charming partner. A high-stakes heist under the streets of Paris. And an ending that will split readers right down the middle.

The Heartbeat Heist is a trope-packed, high-energy historical fantasy that reads like Dramione meets National Treasure with a dash of dark academia. Evelyn, the Bird of Bordeaux, is a master thief with a razor-sharp wit, a revenge plan years in the making, and a soft spot for the orphanage that raised her. When the shadowy Reaper offers her the score of a lifetime to steal a relic of dark magic hidden in cursed tunnels beneath Paris, she reluctantly teams up with Jaq, a sassy, infuriatingly charming thief whose quick wit and persistence make him both a liability and an irresistible distraction.

From the very first chapter, the tension crackles between the danger of the job, the magic surrounding the relic, and the sharp-edged banter between Evelyn and Jaq. It is a delicious mix of enemies to lovers, forced proximity (yes, there is only one bed😏), shadow daddy?? and just enough slow burn angst to keep you hooked. The romance is not the main focus, but when it hits, it hits.

The ending is bold, emotional, and very divisive. It is one of those finales that will either leave you impressed with the author’s guts or fuming at your bookshelf. Personally, it knocked my rating down from a solid four to 3.5, but I cannot deny I was fully entertained from start to finish.

Tropes:
꩜。 enemies to lovers
꩜。 morally grey FMC
꩜。 revenge plot
꩜。 he falls first
꩜。 hidden identities
꩜。 one bed
꩜。 shadow daddy.

If you love heist stories with banter, twists, morally grey choices, and a heroine who will burn the world for those she loves, this belongs on your TBR. Just brace yourself for that ending😉

**ARC Review**
Thank you NetGalley for an early copy of this book!

This is one of those books where I’m shocked more people aren’t talking about it! There is so much happening in this book and I’m so glad it’s going to be a series because I can’t wait to learn more about the world and the magic in it!
Set in France, shortly after the revolution, we follow Evelyn a young girl who also happens to be a notorious thief. We quickly learn that Evelyn is living this double life so she can help the orphanage that took her and her sister in stay afloat. One night she is approached by The Reaper about stealing something most valuable to one of the most vile men in the country, Elias Chapelle, the man who killed Evelyn’s parents.
This book has a little bit of everything. The basis is a heist story but there is romance, revenge, and family as well. Evelyn has vowed to get revenge on the man who killed her parents but also wants to make sure above all her sister is cared for.
Some of the “twists” were very easy to guess and I felt it was a bit weak in the world building department. I want to know more about how magic works in this world. I also would love to know a bit more about the political climate - this doesn’t need to be a focal point but since it’s just after the revolution some context here would be nice.
The highlight for me were the Catacombs! I thought it was extremely unique and creative to use them as a magical maze. This is the main setting for a large chunk of the book since this is where the heist takes place and boy did Gray make them eerie and creepy and at times even I felt claustrophobic reading it!
I really enjoyed this one, highly recommend and I am anxiously awaiting the next book!

The Heartbeat Heist is a fast-paced, action-packed romantasy set in the catacombs of Paris. Evelyn is a skilled thief known throughout her village as the Bird of Bordeaux. When a mysterious figure proposes the ultimate heist, Evelyn finds herself accepting. However, she soon regrets her decision when she's told she won't be working alone; rather, she will be partnered with Jaq, a charming, clever, and infuriatingly handsome con artist. While she knows she cannot trust Jaq, she also realizes that this heist, which will take them into the dark and magical mazes of the Paris catacombs, will not be easy. The two must not only work together if they hope to acquire the sought-after relic but also fight their growing feelings for each other.

The Heartbeat Heist has a bit of everything: morally gray characters, atmospheric settings, intriguing heists, and romance. I really like both Evelyn and Jaq as characters. I actually really hope that in the next book, we'll get Jaq's POV as well. I absolutely loved the banter between the two main characters! In addition to great characters, I also thoroughly enjoyed the overall plot and the ultimate heist. I had fun piecing together the puzzle along with Evelyn and Jaq. My one critique would be that I wished some of the scenes had been more developed. I, especially, felt that the challenges in the catacombs were rushed. I would have liked a longer book with more detailed and drawn-out chapters. I also would have liked if a bit more time had been spent on the development of their relationship. Nonetheless, the ending is definitely a cliffhanger, and I can't wait for book 2.

This book exceeded my expectations. I picked it up because I can never overlook a good heist book. But not just the heist but the plot is very well thought out.
The FMC is a clever robber with excellent knife/archer skills and sleight of hand. She is recruited by "The Reaper" to steal a precious and magically bound gemstone to expose a brutal noble. She accepts but she has to work with another recruitee that being the MMC. The MMC has got the mysterious vibe going for him. He is equally smart and cunning and is kind of infuriating. They both pair up well and are on par with each other on their skills.
The world can be said to have magic but not in the typical sense. You don't see much magic in the book but those pertaining to the MMC and some kind of enchantments. I would have liked to see other nature-related magic mentioned in the book,
Now this is where I'll give some minor spoilers so read with caution. There are at least 3 twists at the end. One of them is very predictable but you still get excited over it. The other two made me freak out. I was like 'What the FUCK!!!' the whole time. If you read it I'm sure you'll agree with me.
I loved this book and can't wait for the sequel. Please give it to me now!!!!
Lastly, I would like to say that this book was adventurous. thrilling, spicy, romantic, funny and humorous and a lot more. I hope others pick it up and see how much effort and love the author has put into it and come to love it as I now do.

[ ARC REVIEW ]

First thoughts:

I was so sure how I’d rate this book until the end. Then I quickly became unsure. I guess I’ve decided it’s still worth 5 stars, but WTF was that ending?? Also how could I possibly do a spoiler free full review? I have so many questions. I can’t even think. My brain is fried. I’ll come back to this tomorrow I think.

Update:

The Heartbeat Heist is a sort of urban fantasy set in 1800s France that follows Evelyn, AKA The Bird of Bordeaux as she attempts her biggest heist yet. When she is approached by a mysterious stranger who offers her enough money to provide safety and security for her and the children in her orphanage, she can’t turn it down. Unfortunately, Evelyn is not the only thief offered the job – Jaq, a handsome stranger she met an her last heist, is also offered the job, AND MORE MONEY. She quickly realizes she, unfortunately, needs to work with the mysterious man. But that does NOT means she trusts him. Because, frankly, his part of the reward could do so much for those children. She might even have to leave him behind…

It has tension, yearning, super fun banter, and twist at the end that will leave your jaw on the floor. The romance is a sweet, slow burn that they fight with everything they have in them. It’s pointless of course. The chemistry is undeniable. I really can’t say much more here since I’m avoiding spoilers but just read it. It’s honestly so good and such a UNIQUE story. And he’s a shadow daddy if you needed another reason to read.

I’m so looking forward to book two!! Thanks so much to Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this ARC!

“Fear has no power over me when it comes to how I feel about you”

I really like this. Surprisingly so, because I was not expecting to enjoy myself as much as I actually did. Takes place in France. A young woman who lives in the street and needs to take care of her little sister. She is a thief and sometimes an assassin. She is seeking revenge against those who hurt the people she loves. She is assigned from a complete stranger to steal something from the catacombs of Paris. And things go awry as she is to be helped by another thief … charming, cocky and impossibly handsome man who … well let’s say that this book is the definition of he falls first. She is not supposed to feel for him. She is ruthless … she is heartless … or is she? I liked the dynamic between the characters. I liked the magical element in the story and how seamlessly blended it was in the narrative. I liked the fact that it was fast paced. I even liked the fact that the romance was more pg … a breath of fresh air recently (not that I do not enjoy my spice in books). It was different. A good different. And I enjoyed every second. I’m glad I got to read Evelyn’s story!!

I want to start by saying Florence Gray is a phenomenal writer with an incredible career ahead of her. The writing style is there, the idea is there, the plot is there. This romantasy had so many elements I loved, from the clever banter and tension to the creativity behind the premise. It was such an enjoyable read.

The romance felt a little rushed, and I found myself wanting more context for how their feelings developed. A few extra heists together to build trust and connection could have really elevated that emotional payoff.

My main critique lies with the FMC. Her Robin Hood-inspired motives were compelling at first, but as the story unfolded, she seemed to lose sight of her moral compass. For someone so bold in her words, she lacked the courage I expected during the heist, and I wished she had shown a little more growth or self-awareness by the end.

The plot twists were fun, though somewhat predictable, and I think a bit more subtlety could make future books even stronger.

All that said, I truly enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see where the series goes next. Jaq was a standout for me, loyal, cunning, and surprisingly tender. I’m really hoping he returns in book two. Florence Gray’s talent shines through every page, and I’m excited to see what she writes next.

I am so glad I took a chance on this book because it was wonderful. Evelyn a.k.a. the Bird of Bordeaux is a master thief and I really liked her character. She is strong, smart and sassy and she takes no crap from anyone. The instant we meet the MMC, Jaq, I fell in love. I loved the tension not only with the story itself, but between Evelyn and Jaq as well. I think the concept was unique and the 1800's alternate France setting added an air of mystery and intrigue.

I am a sucker for a good heist story and this one pays off. There is more I want to say here but I fear it would spoil some of the plot so I’m leaving it out. I felt the ending left room for the author to continue the story and I would be interested in reading more in this world.

Is this book perfect? No. It certainly has some flaws (particularly with the FMC and the way she describes herself as well as her conflicting decisions) but if you are willing to overlook them, I think you'll have a good time reading this book. I also wish we got to see a bit more of the magic and the descriptions could have been better.

An alternate fantastical version of post-Revolution era France that follows a thief out for revenge. And money. And to steal things. Valuable things.

Except the opportunity for revenge that she gets is presented to her by a mysterious person AND she has to accomplish this with someone she is not too thrilled about.

This book has thieves, heists, tension, shadow magic, and a dash of mystery. And I am ALWAYS down for a heist. Especially a spooky and magical one.

Because I am a historical design enthusiast, I do have to say that I feel like there was a lack of invention research. There were quite a few things that I do not think were invented at the time that this story takes place (I don't recall a specific date for this story being stated, but based on context clues I could ballpark it). I am sure that most people will not notice that sort of thing (or care about it at all), but it is something I noticed that maybe someone else will also care about.

I did want more from the characters, some aspects of them and their relationship felt random and forced. I also wanted more from the ending, it wasn't as exciting or satisfying as it could have been or as I wanted it to be.

Thanks to NetGalley for the e-ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
