Midnight by Sharon Sala
Crossroads series #2. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone.
Jacob Kingston is shot in his bar one night as he’s closing. His family returns to Crossroads in concern for him and to try to find out what happened.
Asher Kingston is a special investigator and starts asking questions around the small town trying to find out what happened. He runs into Nora Borden who is in town to sell her family home. She’s a high profile computer tech with incredible investigative and analytical skills so helps Asher while their friendships rekindles. Together they work on a decades old mystery that seems to overlap with his father’s shooting.

Twists and reveals circle each other as Asher and Nora reconnect. The reader knows the answers but Asher and Nora have to put the pieces together before someone else gets hurt.
Fast moving and breathtaking. Love the storytelling and can’t wait for the last book in the trilogy.

Sharon Sala is a good storyteller. It feels like she has gathered us around her and is telling the story to us. If you like that narrative, this is a book for you. Me? I much prefer to be involved with the characters and the action. I don't like being told about it, I want to experience it. It's long too. Way too long. I got bored.

Over 20 years ago, an armored car was robbed and people died. The perps were apprehended, but the money never recovered. Brenda Kingston was apprehended but died without reveling where the money was. Fast forward to the present. Jacob Kingston is shot in his bar and left for dead. This brings his three sons to the scene. Asher is a special investigator with the Texas Attorney General's Office. He feels there is more to the shooting than a robbery gone wrong and is determined to bring the perps to justice.

Nora Borden grew up in Crossroads, Texas and has returned to clean out and sell her family's home after the death of her father. She and Asher were a hot item all through high school but drifted away from each other when they went to different collages. A chance meeting has them reconnecting and rediscovering a love that never died. She helps the Kingston men piece together what happened and pieced together the pieces of their past.

Sharon Sala's second book in the Crossroads series did not disappoint. The reader is introduced to the Kingston family in this novel. The Kingstons have gone through much turmoil due to things beyond their control but are determined not to be victims again. Throw in a long lost love and this story will keep you riveted to each page.

The second book in the series. Okay, 21 years before a robbery was committed and no one knew what happened to the stolen money.
Nora Borden returns to Crossroads, Texas to sell her family home after her father dies. Asher Kingston and Nora were high school sweethearts. When Asher's father is shot, he and his brothers return home.
Sharon Sala is a comfort read for me. Not her best work as I felt she started rambling at times to add to the needed wordage. But I still liked it.

Midnight by Sharon Sala is the 2nd book in her Crosswoods series. The story starts off with a robbery, that involved Brenda Kingston, who was having an affair with Pete Brant. Pete told Brenda to hide the money inside her house in the basement. In fear, Brenda ended up killing herself, and Pete Brant was sentence to jail. Now 21 years later, Pete Brant died in prison, and his two sons are determined to find the missing money.

Asher Kingston, who is 32 years old, is an investigator for the State Attorney General in Austin. He receives a phone call from the police that his father was shot, and in serious condition. He learns from Pearl, who managed to find Jacob, and calls for emergency help, keeping him alive.

Gunner Kingston, who is 27 years old, is a homicide detective in Dallas, Texas; Gunner flies’ home to help. Dylan Kingston, who is 29 years old, lives in Austin and is engaged to Angie. Nora Borden returns home to Crossroads to sell and clean her family’s home. Asher’s girlfriend from high school, runs into him and they rekindle their love. Nora helps Asher, as well as Gunner and Dylan to help her knowledge of IT.

The Brant boys, Everett and Freddie, are determined to find the money (1 Million) somewhere inside the basement. Everett was the one who shot Jacob, and they tried to hide their identity, hoping Jacob would die. Gunner, Asher and Dylan are quietly trying to see who the culprits are, until they discover their identity. All three of them decided to look in the basement, where they finally found the money. The FBI is called, and the family helps the FBI to manage to take the money. The local police chief will work with the Kingston boys as they will lay traps to capture Everett & Freddie.

What follows is that Jacob will recover, and he will know that Pearl was the perfect person for him. Asher and Nora are very much in love, and she will move to Austin, after selling her family home. Dylan and Angie get married, and Gunner returns to Dallas, as he is a great detective.

Midnight was a terrific, intense and love story, especially with the Kingston family. I really enjoyed this story, with so much going on. Midnight was so very well written by Sharon Sala. Great story that held my attention throughout.

I always look forward to a Sharon Sala book. She is the queen of storytelling. Midnight was another great addition to her bookshelf. Midnight is set in Crossroads, Texas, a small town that our two main characters grew up in, left and their story was left unfinished. Asher Kingston has returned home after hearing from his father that his high school girlfriend, Nora Borden has returned home to sell her family's home after both her parents have passed. He and Nora drifted apart during college and went on to live their lives but were they really living? During Asher and Nora's re-connection, Asher's father is shot and left for dead. Asher calls his brothers home and with two of them in law enforcement, they plan to assist the police to uncover who would want to kill their father. There are a lot of underlying storylines going on in Midnight and that kept me glued to the pages. Midnight was told from multiple POVs and was an emotional, joyous story. I'm curious what the final book in the Crossroads series will be about.

The Kingstons had to relive their mother's deception once again. When they were 12 and under, their mother helped rob someone and then killed herself. Their father Jacob had to raise the three brothers. Asher was the oldest, Gunner was the youngest. They both became police officers. Dylan was a contractor. Their father was shot in an attempted robbery. All three came back to Crossroads to figure out who had shot their father. Asher ran into his high school sweetheart, Nora. Nora was in town to close down and sale her family home since both parents had died. Asher and Nora began seeing each other again and decided they belonged together. She was going to move to Austin where Asher lived and worked for the State Attorney General. They figured out who had shot their father and why before their dad left the hospital.

I gave this book 4.5 stars.

Sharon Sala is one of my favorite authors. She writes small-town romance books that capture my heart. This is the second book in the Crossroads series. This series also has crime solving mysteries in them, too. This was not a slow starting book at all. The action started quickly.

Asher, Gunner, and Dylan hurry home to Crossroads. Texas, when their father, Jacob, is shot in what might have been a robbery at the bar he owns. All three sons work hard to solve this case.

There is more than one romance going on in this book. There is some steaminess. If you like these type books as much as I do, it will be available December 9, 2025.

Thank you to Edelweiss, Sourcebooks, and Sharon Sala for my advanced digital readers copy of this book for my honest opinion.

The second in the series, you don’t really have to read the first one to get this one. There’s only a slight nod back to the main characters in the the first. Most of the books I’ve read by Sharon Sala there isn’t a true mystery to it because you know pretty quickly who the good guy and the bad guy is but her bad guys are so fleshed out. They’re usually also kind of dumb and or pathetic almost to the point where you feel sorry for some of them, and this book is no exception to that it’s more of a how to catch the bad guy and a romance along the way, filled with interesting characters . looking forward to the third book

This is book 2 in the Crossroads series. It can be read as a stand alone. I was so happy to see this new series so reminiscent of Sharon's Blessing series. Wonderful love story with great characters. Asher Kingston is an investigator with the Texas Attorney General's office. His brother is a police office and the other is a building contractor. When Asher returns to Crossroads to investigate his father getting shot during a robbery attempt he runs into his old high school sweetheart, Nora. A great story of forgiveness and a second chance at love.

I loved this Sharon Sala book as much as I have loved many others of hers.
Ms Sala can really tell a good story. Her characters are endearing or not, depending on their part.
I only found Ms Sala’s work in the last few months and have been reading everything I can get my hands on.
Thank you for being a great story teller. Please do not stop!
I’m very excited to read the third book on Crossroads. I was hoping it would be about Gunner. Woohoo!

I listened to the audiobook, and a good hour after the mystery was solved, the audiobook still had another hour left, and I thought to myself this must be part of a series because they’re giving so much detail and background characters that were definitely not main characters in this story. Sure enough, once I came here to Goodreads to leave my review, I saw this was booked two in a series. It was a silly, but fun romance/mystery.

3.75 💫

This was my first experience with Sharon Sala and Midnight was an enjoyable listen. The plot was great, and the combination of second chance romance and mystery kept the story very engaging. The second chance does happen VERY quickly with zero questions surrounding it, which is definitely not what I'm accustomed to in my romance novel reading!

Narration: Thom Thor has a fabulous voice, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him. He is great with bringing emotion to the characters, but I do think a duet style narration would have been more fun and exciting for this audiobook.

Overall, this novel just wasn't quite my style. It was very neat and tidy with closed door romance. I prefer the chaos, drama and tension!

Thank you to the author and Sourcebooks audio for this gifted listening copy. All opinions are my own.

Another good one

I love Sharon Sala's books, with their mix of mystery, action, adventure and romance. Her characters are always well written and the storylines keep your attention from beginning to end. I really enjoy the small town feel of the books and the way the town folk rally behind the main characters. As always I am looking forward to more of her books.

There were a lot of editing errors in this book. All in all, though, the story was good.

I do not like "I now pronounce you man and wife." The guy was already a man before the marriage ceremony. It should be husband and wife.

The epilogue said 1 year later. It was not 1 year later, it was November to August of the next year. If it had been a year, it would have been the next Thanksgiving.

I thought it would be more closely connected to the first novel in the series, but I was wrong. I did like these characters and the story of all the ups and downs of a life lived: the things you thought you understood, the things you know you didn’t understand, and finally the things you never knew you needed. Wonderful. I’ll read it again next year.
