Meanwhile, Candle Lane, living in a disadvantaged neighborhood, had her academic aspirations put on hold after discovering an unexpected pregnancy, despite having secured a scholarship to an Ivy League college.
Struggling to pay her community college tuition, a friend suggests a lucrative a wealthy client is seeking a beautiful woman and a baby to pose as his family until the New Year, with significant compensation.
Will Candle accept the proposition to act as Harper's temporary family? And will Harper prioritize love over financial gain in this unusual arrangement?
The premise of the story was entertaining, what I couldn’t enjoy was the execution. So many things just didn’t make sense. I get he needed to have a play family to make partner, to appear more stable. What I didn’t get was how he didn’t know certain things. Like his mother having a will, or that his maid was actually his god-mother? Also, we think the parents death wasn’t an accident, why is his “new wife” now playing private eye and searching his parents estate for answers? Just weird. There no flow, just a bunch of events thrown together. I should have DNF’d it, truly.
His Rented Family by Blk Qween had a decent storyline with good potential, but the many grammatical errors made it a bit hard to stay fully engaged. Still, I enjoyed the love story between Harper and Candle. I was glad Harper turned out to be a stand-up guy truly looking for love, and even happier that Candle found someone she could trust with her heart and her son. I liked how they stood up for and protected each other through everything. With better editing, this could’ve been an even stronger and more enjoyable read.
Expanded Plot Harper Valiant has carved out a multimillion-dollar empire through grit, ambition, and razor-sharp business instincts. But in the high-stakes corporate arena he’s currently navigating, financial success isn’t the only currency. The company he’s courting for a $50 million partnership prioritizes tradition, family values, and long-term stability. As a bachelor with no spouse or children, Harper doesn’t quite fit the mold.
👩👧 Enter Candle Lane. Once a rising star at an Ivy League university, Candle’s trajectory shifted when she became a mother at a young age. Now raising her child alone, she understands sacrifice in a way few do. So when Harper proposes a bold idea—to pose as his partner and present a picture-perfect family during the holiday season—Candle agrees. It’s not about romance; it’s about survival, security, and a chance to build something better for her child.
🎄 From Thanksgiving to New Year’s, Harper and Candle step into their roles, attending festive dinners, corporate events, and family gatherings. What begins as a calculated arrangement soon becomes emotionally tangled. Candle’s warmth and resilience begin to thaw Harper’s cold, calculated exterior, while Harper offers Candle a glimpse of the stability she’s longed for.
💔 But behind the curated smiles and holiday cheer, cracks begin to form. Old wounds resurface, and the line between performance and reality blurs. Harper’s tightly controlled world starts to unravel, and Candle faces a choice: protect her heart and her child, or risk everything for something real.
❄️ As the final days of the holiday season approach, one question remains—have they simply fooled everyone else, or have they fooled themselves too?
Of all the Urban Fiction novels, this one deserves to be elevated to a mini series.
The slow-burn, storytelling style of Author, Blk Qween is the perfect vehicle for this edgy, suspenseful, urban drama. The female lead, Candle, is a strong, determined, savvy, single mother carved from humble beginnings and hard knocks. The male lead, Harper, also savvy, a little older, confident, and educated is a business man who is fair, open-minded, and steeped in his convictions. To the natural eye one would detect obvious polarity. But truth be told, it is their similar childhood values that ground them in a chemistry neither expected. To their surprise, they click.
For me, It is the edgy version of Dorthy ending up in Oz but keenly aware she has the option to return home. Instead, despite the challenges, she remains by the side of her happenstance king in a world that is far more dangerous than the hood she used to call home. Their journey is uncharted, but their position toward one another is sure.
“His Rented Family,” begs the question: Who says dreams can’t come true?
Oh wow… His Rented Family completely pulled me in! Harper Valiant (hero) is a self-made millionaire on the brink of the biggest deal of his life, but there’s a catch—he needs the perfect “family” to make it happen. Enter Candle Lane (heroine), a smart, strong woman navigating life with her baby, who agrees to play along as his temporary family. And just like that, chaos, chemistry, and unexpected feelings follow.
This story hits all the right notes: friends-to-lovers, fake relationships, millionaire romance, with a side of suspense and a dash of mystery. Watching Harper and Candle figure out their unconventional arrangement while discovering trust, love, and what family really means was just… everything.
Blk Qween Harper writes with so much heart, humor, and tension that I was hooked the whole way. By the end, I was rooting so hard for them to turn this “rented family” into something real. If you love romance with depth, a little suspense, and a lot of heart, this one is a must-read!
This was a very interesting take on arranged marriage. Especially when you add themes of wealth and an age gap. It makes me think of which way I would go if faced with the opportunity to have financial freedom. The chemistry, the plot, and how the author made you think is all there. It’s a page turner that is worth your time reading. Add to your shelves today!
This book had sooo much potential. I just couldn’t look past some parts not making sense. The grammatical errors, use of the wrong words all together, changing the characters names and age swapping. Naming someone unknown throughout the book was also something I’ve never experienced. It was all distracting and took away from the story. Some parts could have been more thought out to bring out more of the plot before the big reveal. Overall an ok story that had the potential to be more.
I was drawn in from the beginning. I love the way Harper and Candle's relationship started off. I the support of Maria and Charles. I love that Harper had a cousin who had his back no matter what! I loved that two strangers fell in love really fast. I had to remind myself that this is a book. But I know that love like Harper's and Candle's truly exist. I truly enjoyed this book!
The storyline was good.. the editing ruined it for me; or should I say, lack of editing. - misspellings like Los Angeles and Napa Valley - name changes that weren't always changed - unlikely details - confusion due to lack of editing
This book kept me locked in from the beginning to the very end! The excitement, the lust, the drama, all of it is masterfully woven together! You won’t regret reading this book!
lots of pieces but it came together nicely....its always someone who wants what you have....i need a part 2 to see how the other relationships ended up and if harper and candle had any children lol think the earthquake made one
I enjoyed this story. I do think it jumped around a lot, during some important parts, which made it a little confusing. But overall it was a good book.
This was a good story. Harper and Candle agree to a fake wedding to solidify his position as partner at has financial/investment job. But what be ended up securing dead his future with Candle. This was a slow burn, had I known that up front, I might have thought different about getting this book. I don't care for show burns. But still the book was cool. There were a lot of grammatical errors. The "hehehe's" and "haha's" used to indicate sometimes laughter was crazy to me. I kept getting Michael Jackson with every hehe that I read. The beginning of the book Exodus was 7 or 8 months old but a couple of chapters later when they went go California be was 18 months old and crawling and pulling up on stuff. Who was UNKNOWN? And why was named UNKNOWN throughout the book? That was strange, at first I thought that there would be a plot twist...but no. Has named was unknown for some unknown reason.
