Seth Hansen never thought he'd return to his hometown of Hollister, South Dakota. Still, when his father's mind starts slipping away, he steps into the caretaker role with the same unyielding determination that made him a decorated military dog handler.
Allison Sanderson has built her dream one loaf of bread at a time, running the small town’s bakery. Her life is predictable, safe, and boring—until a terrified runaway teenager stumbles into her store, bruised and starving. Seth and Allison have known each other since childhood, their lives intersecting over school events, church picnics, and the occasional school party. What starts as casual conversation over coffee and cinnamon rolls slowly deepens. The easy camaraderie between them turns into something more—something Seth never expected to find in the town he once left behind.
Return to Hollister for a romance wrapped in suspense and small-town characters that take you on an emotional trip through a story that will leave you with a happily ever after and a smile.
USA Today and Amazon Bestselling Author, Kris Michaels is the alter ego of a happily married wife and mother. She writes romance, usually with characters from military and law enforcement backgrounds.
Kris was born and raised in South Dakota. She graduated many years ago from a high school class consisting of 13 students (yes that is thirteen, eleven girls and two boys...lucky boys). She joined the military, met her husband, and traveled the world. Today she lives on the Gulf Coast and writes full time.
Kris is an avid people watcher and dreamer. The stories she writes are crafted around the hopes and dreams of a true romantic. She believes love is essential, people are beautiful, and everyone deserves a happy ending.
When she isn't writing Kris enjoys a full life revolving around family, friends, laughing, whiskey, and cold red wine. (Yes cold...don't judge.)
Excellent Read! An unexpected romance with honesty, learned life's lessons, and knowing when it's right, it's grand, with no good reason to wait as Seth and Allison well know, tomorrows are never guaranteed. Plus, their chemistry may have or not, been described as thunder, per Seth's dad LoL, and bless his cantankerous heart, he was all for their matchup on a good day. When a young woman shows up in the small town, and not in a good way, it gives all the good citizens of Hollister, SD, to show what they are made of and how they take care their own, whether the person grew up there or showed up yesterday, they adopt, yes, adopt, adapt too, as Lottie finds out. She couldn't have chosen a better town to hide out in and be saved. Not to forget Gomer a retired military dog adopted by Seth, who instinctively knows how to be a comfort to troubled souls. The sweetest fur baby who deserves only the best. I hope we get to read more about him and Seth in Hollister, helping out in the best kept non-secret. I got to the HEA and sighed very happily. I do hope these wonderful characters will continue in new releases. Note: Reading about Alzheimer's whether in medical journals or my beloved romance books esp as I get older, has me pausing more often to pray for a cure for this debilitating progressive disease which devastates families long before it comes to it's fatal end. Ms. Michaels wrote what I feel is an accurate and emotional journey of a son stepping up to care for his dad, yet realizing it takes a community, because to do it alone, is not good for any caregiver's own health, in any case.
I borrowed Home Changes ~ The Long Road Home ~ Book 22 & Hollister ~ Book 8, by Kris Michaels from the Kindle Unlimited Program on Amazon.
Seth Hansen, retired Air Force dog handler has returned to his home town of Hollister, South Dakota to take care of his father, Chester, who is declining with Alzheimer's Disease. He makes a quick trip back to Virginia to get Goomer, a retired military trained dog that he is adopting and stops at the Altanta USO for a bit of Blessing's advise.
Allison runs the bakery in town now that it has doubled in size since Seth left for the military twenty-two years ago. When they meet again he tells her that he always thought she was, "the cutest girl in school". Romance started with friendship, and then more.
A young woman was seen taking the scraps from the bakery's trash and finally Lottie came to Allison for help, food and shelter. She had been abused, her ex kept telling he would kill her as he increased his abuse. She had run away and was hiding under the boardwalks outside the bakery. Lots of community help to find a guy that would hurt women with Edna leading the town. Love her character and her hobbies!
After a show down with the abusive boyfriend, attemped kidnapping, attempted murder, Seth took the guy down to move on to a happy ever after plans with Allison. I love their commitment to always tell each other the truth and keep the relationship real.
Absolutely loved Seth and Allison. We've met Allison in previous Hollister stories, and she had always been sour. But she's been working on herself these last few years with Dr Wheeler, and has found her center. She is so much happier now.
Seth has come home to take care of his dad, who has dementia. This is a hard transition as he didn't have the best relationship with his dad growing up. He has brought Gomer, a retired military working dog with him. Spending time with his dad and learning more about dementia gives Seth and his dad the opportunity to grow closer.
Allison catches Seth's interest, and they have the opportunity to slowly get to know each other. With Seth caring for his father, both know it's a package deal.
There is something going on in Hollister when Allison realizes food from her trash is missing and donated clothes from the next store over goes missing. Allison realizes that someone needs help. Allison meets a scared and abused young Lottie and takes her in. However, danger lurks.
Can Seth and the town of Hollister keep her and Lottie safe?
I could not put this book down! I love coming back to Hollister, reading about Edna, Ken, Sam, Frank, and Amanda! I highly recommend this book!
Seth home and retired from the military and picking up his favorite working dog retired due to health issues and unable to perform the duties required, taking care of his dad who has Alzheimer's and needs the constant care and supervision, Allison running her bakery, acutely aware of Seth, trying very hard to get over her personal issues with relationships, when he tells her he always thought she was the cutest girl in school she didn't believe him the shy timid nerd type, but I believed him, starting a relationship when both have trust and esteem issues is hard, but their chemistry is off the charts combustible Holister takes care of their own when trouble comes loosing for the stranger who's come to hide, I always love revisiting Holister and seeing old friends, Frank and his taffy that cures everything, Edna and her knowing everything and seeing everything, Kris Michaels you deserve100 star's for this book and I have to say Blessing's always right, woo woo, thank you for another phenomenal story, Dana Zamora
Loved this story…as always Kris tales pull you in and not wanting to put the book down until finished and as always, Blessing’s predictions when people pass through the airport where she works come true. Allison runs her bakery and experiences guilt everytime she runs into Ken the Sheriff who is now happily married after he and Allison had a final blowup and she admitted she unfairly kept him dangling since highschool while not in love with him. When Seth returns to Hollister to look after his dad duferring from Alzheimer’s and then adopts and brings home Gomer his favourite service dog 2 weeks later, he and Allison connect. Many things are happening and not to be a spoiler, you will love how everything happens. I already can see the next Kris Michael’S book happening out of this story with the teaser in Seth and Allison’s story.
Alzheimer's is hard to deal with but Seth does great with Allison by his side
Seth is called home to take care of his dad who had Alzheimer's. Allison owns the bakery and used to be a not nice person. Now after some counseling she understands her past behavior better and has changed a lot. Seth doesn't want to get involved with her, even though he really liked her back in high school, because of his obligations involved with his dads care. But when it's right you can't fight it for long. Then she finds the person who has been taking her garbage to eat and things get interesting. Will they find Lottie's abuser before he finds her again and hurts her and Allison? Will Allison and Seth make it work and be there for Chester together?
I loved how Kris wrote about how Alzheimer's affects the people affected by it and their family and friends.
And what a guy he is! I love Seth, he may have been brought up by a stern and cold man, but Seth has a huge heart. You see it immediately in the love and care he shows Gomer, but more so in the acceptance and patience he shows his dad and the honest way he approaches Allison. They both have baggage, both are emotionally wary, but both deserve the chemistry and love that explodes between them. They once again reinforce their caring natures with their care for the scared and traumatised Lottie. I hope we see plenty more of Seth, Allison, Lottie and Gregg in future Hollister books......please tell me there will be more books set in Hollister? This is an awesome addition to the Long Road Home series and the Guardian/Hollister world.
Seth is returning home after serving his country for the past twenty two years with his WMD dog, Gomer. Seth’s dad has Alzheimer’s and is on a steady decline and Seth is there for him. Allison is running the bakery and can’t believe Seth could possibly like her as she doesn’t feel worthy of anything. She was bullied as a child and teen and wasn’t the nicest to her last boyfriend. Then food she is throwing away goes missing and from there their adventures begin. Another page turner from Kris Michael’s that you want to read faster but then you don’t so the book doesn’t end. Loved seeing how Blessing gives Seth advice and how when he is in Hollister and sees Kate they both think Blessing is a little psychic. 5+ stars.
This story has elements in life that many face. Seth is called back home to become his father's caregiver. Seth retired from the military and even brought home his dog who was his partner named Gomer. Seth becomes reacquainted with the people of Hollister and in fact gets the chance to act on feelings for Allison. Things happen in this small town and it is such an entertaining read. Kris Michaels is a master at this kind of story. You can't go wrong here. I loved the characters and could relate to Seth and his feelings about being there for his father.
Homes Changes resonated deep within me as I am on the same journey as Seth but with my husband not my Dad. I feel the same as Seth as I struggle to understand the changes and try to cope with them. I loved that Allison is finally learning her self worth and despite her orginal misgivings decides to trust that Seth truly does care for her. There was no surprise that Hollister pulled together to protect someone who's not one of their own. And, then you add in Chester's mood swings from melancholy to cantankerous and Gomer's protection of him, you get the best of one of Kris Michaels' small town romances.
Kris Michaels is a great storyteller, every book is clean and fresh and it doesn't matter how many times you read them they always come to life. It’s lovely to see that Jewel and Zane had the babies which was a shock, I wonder if one follows their auntie Jade only time will tell. I am glad Allison got her happy ever after. Kris Michaels dealt with the dementia of Chester sensitively and with the knowledge that would help her fans if they were going through the same devastating illness with a family member just like Seth. Has Kris left the door open for Gregg to get his HEA? I really hope so. Again this is my personal opinion.
This one had all the feels. Seth is back to care for his dad. Allison runs her bakery. Allison knows that someone is getting into her trash. She is very surprised when she finally meets the young lady. Seth is caring for his dad. He was able to adopt his military dog, so he has him too. Frank has offered him a position. Plus, bonus for him is his building relationship with Allison. Hollister will come together to protect this young lady. Can't wait to see what is next.
I think that of all the Hollister books Kris Michaels has written, this one is my favorite. It touches on difficult subjects (Alzheimers, abuse) in the most sensitive and caring ways. It brings together two people who just fit each other beautifully. It explores coming back home after years away and finding how you fit back in. And, well, it's a Kris Michaels book that brings us back just ever so slightly into the Guardian world. And let's not forget about Blessing.
There's nothing to dislike about this book. Well, one thing: it ended.
I loved being back in Hollister! And I loved seeing a different side to Allison. Every book she’s shown up in previously has shown her to be bitchy and conniving, but she’s worked on herself with Dr Wheeler and just in time, too, for Seth to come home. There was a lot of heavy stuff dealt with kindly in this book without weighing the reader down: Alzheimer’s (a parent), domestic abuse (side character). It was a great book. Seth was a go getter the second he saw Allison, and I’m really looking forward to reading about Gregg and Lottie whenever that comes around.
Blessing rides again as another group of service members meet at the Atlanta Airport. Seth is returning home for the second time, having retrieved his retired military service dog. He is on a difficult journey, since his father is suffering from Alzheimer's. The good news is that he reconnects with a woman who intrigued him in high school. Allison has been through a lot of emotional trauma and has worked on herself. Seth thinks she's great and they develop a relationship quickly. A young woman in distress becomes a cause for the whole town.
I love the books set in Hollister, South Dakota. These are an extension of the Guardian series books, but the people are so real and three dimensional that it’s like visiting a real small town. Unfortunately, like the Guardian book, the reader needs to take them in order to understand what’s going on.
In this book, which was a long time coming, Allison finally finds love. Seth, returning home from the military, finally finds peace. I love his confusion in who ended up with who. I hope there will be another visit coming up in the near future.
Hollister always feels like home to me. Seth came back because his family needs him and he is able to bring Gomer, his old, retired military dog, with him. As he learns to navigate life with his dad’s illness, he also finds solace in his renewed friendship with Allison who is working hard to believe that she deserves to find a healthy relationship. The town rallies around them, providing help with Chester and with newcomer Lottie and also supporting their growing love, the way only a small town can do.
Ok! Kris has another hit on her writing skills! This story is about Seth, Gomer and Allison. The beginning has Seth and Gomer meeting Blessing again. Gomer apparently remembers her. Seth makes it home and has Gomer shadow his dad. The intense moments came towards the end of the story. We meet Lottie. It seems like Gregg - another friend - takes a liking to Lottie and as does Lottie to Gregg. Glad Seth was able to connect with Allison and this couple work in their happy ending. FANTASTIC job Kris! I would recommend this book!
I have always loved Kris Michael's books, but boy Home Changes was a beautiful story. Like all her books there is suspense but this book was a love story. Yes there is a love story between Seth and Allison, but the best was the love story between Seth and his father. I believe there was a lot of Kris in this book and it is a book that stays with you. Loved this book and highly recommend it to all.
Really enjoyed this book . was happy to see Allison get her own HAE. Book flowed nicely Open up thoughts of people giving jobs up for family and taking care of those they love. This happens alot . I liked this as I imagine alot of readers have either experienced this or know if someone going thru this type of Scenario. This author never fails.
As the nurse daughter of a father with Alzheimer’s I have to congratulate Kris on a beautifully sensitive description of what it is like to have and to live with this horrible disease. The surrounding love story has been a long time coming but Allison deserves her HEA, I loved Gomer and was so glad he found a retirement “ job” helping to care for Chester . I hope Seth and his new career will reappear in future stories. A fantastic addition to the Long Road Home series .
Having lost a parent with dementia, the way Ms Michaels describes this horrible condition and the effect it has on carers and families is superlative. Seth was nit prepared for the changes in his father, but then neither was his father. The scene where Allison tries to sneak out of the house only to be caught by Chester is both amusing and sad, as Chester can’t remember her, thinking she was sneaking in. There’s loads more to this story.
Seth and Allison travel a journey that so many of us are (or will have to). This is the allure of Hollister. Life happens, and the residents of Hollister rise to the occasion in the way that I wish would happen more often.
Kris Michaels doesn't only provide an entertaining story. She writes stories that provide adventure, entertainment, romance, hope, and redemption.
Home Changes by Kris Michaels is a heartwarming tale about a retiring military man, his retired MWD, and his father who is suffering a decline due to Alzheimer’s that terrible disease that forces you to put the past behind you and forces you to focus on the now. Watching Seth try to deal with everything made my heart break. I watched with joy as his relationship with Allison blossomed. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale even as it made me cry,
I would read this story again and then again. Seth is so manly yet so tender. I am so happy Allison was given her HEA. They made a strong country couple. Poor Chester! My heart was a mess! I fell in love with the MWD Gomer. I served in the Army active duty for six years myself. This story was beautifully written and I couldn't put it down. Thanks for the story.
Kris , Great job!! Seth and Allison are perfect together. My mom has dementia, it’s so hard to see a loved one forgetting. You did a remarkable job, show casing the heartbreak it has on the family. How they can’t do it alone. I know it was hard for you to write this story. Brenda
So good visiting Hollister and the people who live there!!
This book was so worth the wait!! Loved Alison and Seth together. The story was romantic and action packed. Kris your understanding and portrayal of that awful disease was heart wrenching but told with such care. Thank you for this lovely story! 💜😺👏💥📚🌹
Seth returns home to Hollister when he receives word that his father is not doing well. When he takes his father to get an idea of what he’s dealing with at a doctor in Belle, he runs into Allison - which sparks an immediate attraction and start of a friendship which soon turns into more❤️
Loved Seth and Allison and hoping we get a story for Lottie and Gregg🤞
This a story of family and what you do to take care of the ones you love. Seth and Allison both deserve to have found their HEA. They both don’t shy away from taking care of family and community and move forward putting past issues behind them. This one will make you smile and tear you up but it’s well worth the read.
Wow! Allison and Seth coming together is the best thing ever. Seth coming back to Hollister to take care of his dad with Alzheimer’s is heartbreaking but him getting involved with Allison is well worth it . She deserves her happy ending. Could something be developing between Lottie and Greg?
