Chosen Daughters: Forbidden Love in a Deadly Cult

Rate this book
THE CULT SHATTERED THEIR FAITH. LOVE WILL PICK UP THE PIECES.

Ulysses never planned to return to the cult. The Church of the Ninth Order shaped his darkest memories, and while love drew him back into their oppressive community, heartbreak left him stranded. Clinging to his fragile sobriety, he plans to keep his head down and distract himself with his art. But when he’s asked to counsel the enchanting Esme, staying detached is no longer an option.

As a Chosen Daughter, Esme’s survival depends on her submission. Bound to marry a much older church elder, she dreams of escaping to the world she lost. Ulysses promises to protect her, even if it means navigating the church’s sinister politics in ways he never expected.

When Esme uncovers a deadly secret that could bring down the entire Order, their defiance becomes rebellion. Now, Ulysses must silence Esme to protect them both or honor her right to take a stand—a choice that could cost them their lives.

A haunting, high-stakes romance of oppression, defiance, and forbidden love. Perfect for fans of dystopian cult stories like The Handmaid’s Tale. This standalone novel follows Ulysses, first introduced in Mysteries of the Southern Gothic. Scroll up and grab your copy of Chosen Daughters today!

— A Cult Classic (Pun Intended)

I just finished reading "The Chosen Daughters" and I'm still reeling from the experience. This book is like a trainwreck that you can't look away from - it's messed up, but you're invested.

The story takes place in a cult (because what's more fun than a cult?) where the leaders are basically the worst humans ever. They prey on vulnerable teens, promising to "fix" them, but really, they're just grooming them for cult life. It's like a never-ending cycle of brainwashing, abuse, and... well, you get the idea.

Our protagonist, Ezme, has been trapped in this cult since she was 12. Her life is a never-ending nightmare, but she's got spirit (and a dash of sass). Then, she meets our love interest, who's got a dark past and a heart of gold. Together, they're like two damaged souls trying to escape the cult's clutches.

Now, I'm not gonna lie, the first half of the book was a bit of a slog. It was like watching paint dry, but with more angst. BUT, once the story picked up, I was HOOKED. It's like the author took all the drama, angst, and suspense, put it in a blender, and hit puree.

The romance? Top-tier. It's like they're each other's lifeline in a sea of crazy. And the ending? _chef's kiss_ Perfect.

So, if you're looking for a book that's like a rollercoaster ride of emotions, this is the one. Just don't say I didn't warn you...

This book was absolutely amazing! Thank you @jessica_carrasquillo_ and @swipethebook.pr for sending me this ARC copy.

ℝ𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕟𝕘: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Oh god where do i start 😱, This book really got me thinking and stirred up a whirlwind of emotions that still stick with me even after finishing it.

This book truly lives up to its dedication, “For every daughter who was never as cherished as a son.” Right from the first page, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for, packed with intricate themes, mystery, love, and strong characters, especially a powerful female lead that I absolutely adored. The pacing is thrilling, with just the right amount of slow burns sprinkled in, and I found myself gasping halfway through, thinking, oh my god, this book is incredible! I just wanted to share it with everyone. Seriously, it’s that amazing, and I don’t think I’ll ever get over it!❤️

The FMC Esme, known as “Ez,” is an incredibly strong female lead. She embodies a unique blend of innocence and fierceness, standing her ground against the oppressive rules and abuses of a cult that claims to protect girls like her. Despite her struggles, I admire her determination to embrace life, especially with the support of Ulysseys, who sees her as the bright spot. Ez reminds us that perfection is a myth; everyone has their flaws, and life will throw challenges our way. Yet, through it all, we learn to fight, to live, and to find happiness for ourselves and those around us. She truly inspires hope and the possibility of redemption.

Ulysses, our MMC, is deeply affected by his own struggles, yet he tirelessly strives to support others facing their own challenges. He is a gentle soul and is the kind of guy every girl dreams of. While he has his imperfections, his unwavering support for his partner shines through, as he genuinely wants her happiness and encourages her to pursue her dreams. I find it heartwarming how he admires “Ez,” captivated by her innocence and those strikingly beautiful dark eyes.

This tale delves into the hidden truths of a creepy cult and the individuals connected to it. It explores complex themes like abandonment, abuse, harassment, and the challenges faced by girls, all wrapped in raw emotion. The love story between Uly and Ez is beautifully woven, filled with intense feelings that really resonated with me. Watching them support each other through tough times and believe in one another when doubt crept in was truly heartwarming.
It made me realize just how challenging it can be to be a girl, and I felt grateful for the many ways I'm fortunate.
The epilogue was the highlight for me; it was incredibly intense and fulfilling, leaving me overwhelmed with emotions and happy tears.
If you're into intricate, thought-provoking reads that feature a marriage of convenience, an age-gap romance, suspense, a sinister cult, and a strong female protagonist with captivating characters, this book is definitely worth your time.

Chosen Daughters is a haunting yet powerful tale that masterfully blends romance, suspense, and the chilling reality of cult dynamics.

It’s a story that grips you from the start, immersing you in a world of manipulation, oppression, and ultimately, defiance.

And The author creates an atmosphere that’s both claustrophobic and captivating. The cult's sinister presence lingers in every interaction, making you feel the constant tension the characters endure.

The pacing starts slow, carefully building the oppressive mood, but once the plot escalates, it’s impossible to put the book down.

I personally love this book and everyone should read it i love the blend of everything perfectly done in this book !

Chosen Daughters is more than just a dark romance

it's a story of resilience, self-discovery, and the fight for freedom.

The emotional weight of the characters’ struggles makes their victories all the more satisfying.

While the slow start may test some readers' patience, those who stick with it will be rewarded with a deeply moving, high-stakes narrative that lingers long after the final page.

I do say if you liked The Handmaid’s Tale, gothic romance lovers, and anyone drawn to stories about defiance against oppression. THIS ONE IS A MUST READ !!

This is the story of Ulyssess and Esme.

Uly finds himself back among The Order. Struggling with finding his path he meets one of the Chosen Daughters, Ez. As they get to know one another, she becomes part of his redemption as they strengthen one another.

Chosen Daughters was a quick read- you just want to know what is going to happen next! With The Order you never know what can or will happen and I was not about to put the book down until I found out!

I was thrilled to be able to read another of Jessica’s books. I came across Mysteries of the Southern Gothic and quickly backtracked to read The Manchineel so I was caught up with the various characters and storylines. While Chosen Daughters is a stand alone, there are some inner connected characters and themes that will make sense having the backstory.

I am hooked on these characters (and the previous characters) and will definitely be following along for more!

Thank you to author, Jessica Carrasquillo, Tracky PR and Swipe the Book PR for the opportunity to read this book. I received an epub and am leaving my review voluntarily.

Thank you Jessica Carrasquillo and Swipe The Book PR for providing me a digital ARC of the book. This was a unique experience for me.
Esme is my favourite character. She's very strong despite what all she has to face while being in the cult. Ulysses was very hesitant, and I feel he was being very rational and practical while taking decisions. I liked this combination of an emotional male main character (MMC) and a dominating female main character (FMC).
The friendship between Kia and Esme was of utmost importance. The moment Kia said, "You would do the same for me as well", made my heart swell with warmth for their friendship and how well they knew each other.
The moment where I thought that the book might end, I was shocked with such a turning point that I could not keep the book down.
I'm glad that there was closure for Ulysses. This book was also an eye opener for me, because it presented me with what a cult would look like. The writing style was unique, and I might try other writings too by this author.
If you're interested in a book which is set in a dystopian cult world, you would want to check this out.

The book's theme was quite a new concept to me, but it kept me hooked with the perfect balance between romance and mystery. This was more than the normal romance books I usually read, with friendship and women's struggles more presented beautifully.

Sometimes the home is an other person, and that was what both Uly and Esme are to each other. Esme has been through a lot, and the way she fought back and stood for herself and Kia was incredible.

The whole setting of the book was quite tense, and that was the best part. The cult includes elders(who lead it), and they were the worst humans.

tropes:
Marriage of convenience
My wife moments
reluctant hero
age gap
sinister cult

highly recommended to someone who loves mystery with romance:)

Gifted ARC

Uly deserved better in The Mysteries of Southern Gothic and I am happy he got it. Everything from the romance to the plot is wrapped up kind of in a rush but I loved it for the most part.

After reading all three of her books this month and enjoying it, I'm excited to see what the author writes next.

I absolutely loved this book, Jessica always knocks if out of the park with her writing.
A few quick thoughts on the book...
I absolutely loved how there wasn't one particular theme to this story. The romance, the murder, the cult and suspense really keeps you on ur toes.
I loved Ez's character, and her growth through this book and I absolutely loved Uly's redemption story. If you've read "Mysteries Of the Southern Gothic" you know Uly was a mess € so to see him come full circle
was amazing!
Although the focus wasn't particularly a romance the way it was written was perfection and kind of made me glad it wasn't the complete focal point.
The whole cult aspect obviously was my favorite part.
The corrupt leaders, the bizzare, ceremonies and rules were so intense, the way she wrote it seemed like it could be an actual cult.
In this thrilling romance, you'll find redemption, justice, and love as Uly and Ez are on their search for growth and freedom.
BOOK TROPES include:

🎨 Marriage of convenience
🎨 Virgin FMC
🎨 Reluctant hero age gap
🎨 Touch her & •
🎨 Sinister cult
🎨 Survival against oppression
🎨 Self-discovery

This book restores the faith in all the things that are still good in this world.

Ulysses Katsaros has had a troubling life - questionable childhood and youth spent dealing with addiction, getting better, helping others but he eventually ended up being used and betrayed again. He gets back with Sophie who's known him his whole life, to seek comfort and love. Together, they choose to go back to the Order, now run by - Lang Randall, Sofie's father. But, little does he know, he's setting himself to fail; resulting in Sofie abandoning him yet again.

He's left all alone in the Order but, chooses to stay as he believes that under Randall, it's a place for actionable change. Soon, he realizes that the Order is nothing more than a cult, masquerading as a faith-based residential program, filled with tyrant leaders who are greedy for power.

He watches outlaws and misdirected teenagers being brought in to be ruled over as per the leaders decide. Boys are trained for a life full of hard labor, minimal education and stuffed with the traditional & patriarchal rules of how a man should live. Whereas, women are being subdued, fitted into the domestic roles to be carried out forever, controlled by the leasers with no exposure to the world outside.

Here, he meets Esme or Ez, as he calls her. A beacon of hope, a ray of light. He finds her disarming and wanting to protect her from the evil wolves who are salivating at her; biding time to pounce. He accepts to be the Steward of the Order with the hope of exacting a change, to positively make a difference in the lives of the folks arriving here.

He soon marries Ez to make her his and save her from an ugly fate, even though he believes he doesn't deserve her. She's ecstatic to be his as no one in her existence - looks at her the way he does, makes her feel the way he does.

However, being with Ez opens the dark underbelly of the cult to Uly. And with him by her side, Ez vows not to stay quiet anymore. What follows is a tale of courage, revenge, redemption and acceptance.

Carrasquillo, in this book, gives a perfect companion for the sweet, self-doubting Uly. Burdened due to his past struggles, he's self-deprecating to a fault, even if he has recovered and chosen to help and assist others in need, as a career. He's matched with Ez, a compassionate, kind, enchanting soul who possesses equal measures of courage, determination and ferocious enough in love to fight for & with Uly to their better lives.

If truth be told I don’t really like reading books related to cult or any religious groups. I didn’t read the blurb and it was my mistake that’s why I applied for the ARC and later on realized but that aside I loved the book. I was so invested in the book that I forgot it was about cults,
The story shows the reality that still happens in society especially in country like India. It is so common that we don’t even blink an eye about it. The girls are treated as if we are just showpieces that can be gifted to men for just being a man. And the most cruel thing is that it is done by our own parents.
This is the story about THE ORDER, which is a group of people that are seemed as elders who have the power to control the lives of people who support them. Boys and girls who seem to be bad or do something unacceptable in terms of society are sent to THE ORDER to be disciplined and paid by their parents. Here boys are taught in every field and are made to believe that they’re the best and shouldn’t let women to tell them otherwise, they are literally taught to be the supreme beings.
Girls, also known as Chosen Daughters, are groomed to be the perfect housewives and then are kind of sold to the members of the same group no matter the age or their opinion. Ulysses was born and brought up here but was able to escape the place but after all these years he returns because of his girlfriend Sofie but she runs off in just few days. He decides to stay and make things better here and meets a girl Esme who is also one of the Chosen Daughters and is being forced to marry a man of her father’s age.
Ulysses tries his best to change the life of the children who are being forced to live in this prison of a place. He teaches Esme that she do have a say in the marriage and that she can say no. Will his interruptions help others or will he be the next prey in the matters of THE ORDER?
Read this beautiful story and find out how this so called modern and developed society still believes such out-of-world thoughts and want each and everyone to believe so too. This story teaches that the most important thing to do id to fight for your own respect and no one is coming to save you if you aren’t standing for yourself.

One thing that my friends and loved ones know about me is that I have an unhealthy obsession with cults. I have spent hours watching documentaries of all types of cults, especially religious cults. So when I started reading this book, I knew it was going to be one that caught my attention, and I would enjoy to the end. This was so different from what I have read in the past. There are many dark romances involving people either stuck in or persecuted by cults. Like many real cults, this is one where the followers feel strongly about the good things within the cult and the leadership abuses their followers. I thought the plot was gripping and found it hard to put the book down. There was suspense and action, as well as a fantastic romance that gets tested many times throughout the book.

Uly was such an amazing man and such a fantastic MMC. He was one of the few at the cult that had been at the compound of the cult, but had also experience life on the outside. His heart was never in the cult, but he remained because he felt a sense of duty to one person or another within the group. He knew that he was flawed and struggled with his alcoholism, finding peace within the serenity of the cult. It was his sense of duty to everyone innocent in the cult that led to him finding Esme. She was someone who had been oppressed by the misogynistic rules of the cult. Her relationship with Uly helped to uncover the seedy things that the leaders were involved in. They were a perfect match and not only created a sweet romance for the readers, but they also shed a light on the different reasons that people remain in the cults.

This book really spoke to the part of me that is obsessed with cults and the people that they take advantage of. It was such a different story, especially in its approach to the people within the cult. There were some hot times between the two MCs, but there weren’t many and the ones that were in this book, while open door, were fairly mild. I didn’t think that this took away from the book at all because the plot and the developing relationship between Uly and Esme was so phenomenal. This was a great story to show how corrupt people can take advantage of those that are just looking for answers.

***INCREDIBLE***

This is such an amazing read. the mystery/suspense romance is definitely unputdownable. It indulges you into the story from the first chapter itself. The Author did an amazing job writing such sensitive topics with such ease.

I hate the order, the atrocities they made in the name of rules and sayings is ridiculous. The way they treated children, the way they took advantage of women, the suppression, the cruelty, abuse, harassment made me furious. Lang was bad but Zeke is worst. I hated him so much and the ending he got he TOTALLY deserves it. I was so elated and laughing while reading it, so satisfied with it :)

Esme is my favorite. At the beginning I thought she is weak and succumbed to power. but boy oh boy the way she took stand in front of the order, the way she let out the truth, the way she protected herself, the way she fought for her friend, the way she fought for herself is pure admiration. not just that she is so smart and resilient, I like how she thinks and communicates things and the way she accepts Ulysses, sees him and understands him has my heart.

Ulysses was amazing, he is not perfect. he is recovering from his addiction. he is someone who came from outer world into the cult, he sees right for right. He supported Esme and was all in to protect her. His "touch her you d*e" , she is my wife moments are to swoon worthy. The amount of times giggles and squealed whenever he comes Infront of her to protect her is heart-warming.
I love how the Author kept the characters realistic with flaws and imperfection which made it even more connected.

I was on the edge for the last few chapters. I was begging and praying that ulysses doesn't take a wrong step. that he won't ruin his own future because of his overthinking. But The way it ended made me happy.

I think every Contemporary romance and suspense reader fanatic should read this book. The blend of suspense with romance was very well managed and amazingly written. Thank you swipe the books PR and Jessica for this wonderful ARC

Chosen Daughters" is a moving and thought-provoking book that explores the darker side of life, but ultimately offers a message of hope and redemption. This book tackles tough themes like trauma, depression, and abuse, but handles them with care and sensitivity, making it a must-read for anyone who loves character-driven fiction.

The story is a beautiful mix of love, friendship, and found family. The romance is sweet and intense, and the characters are well-developed and relatable. You'll fall in love with the strong female lead, who's a kind and compassionate person with the strength to stand up for herself and others. Her journey is inspiring, and her growth throughout the book is remarkable.

One of the standout features of this book is its amazing portray of complex characters. The author takes the time to develop each character, giving them their own unique voice and backstory. This makes it easy to become invested in their stories and root for them as they face the ups and downs of life.

The plot is engaging and suspenseful, with a climax that's both intense and emotional. The author does an excellent job of building tension and creating suspense, making it impossible to put the book down. But it's the ending that's truly special - a conclusion that's both satisfying and uplifting.

Without giving too much away, I can say that the ending is a beautiful tribute to the power of hope and resilience.

The writing style is simple yet impactful. The pacing is well-balanced, with a mix of fast-paced and slow-burning sections that keep you engaged.

This book deals with complex themes and I would suggest you to read the trigger warnings beforehand.

✨Strongly recommended✨

This book is perfect for fans of character-driven fiction, romance, and women's fiction. So if you're looking for a powerful and uplifting read, be sure to add "Chosen Daughters" to your reading list.

Chosen Daughters is a gripping, atmospheric tale of forbidden love, defiance, and survival set against the oppressive backdrop of a sinister cult. Ulysses, a man marked by his past in the Church of the Ninth Order, never planned to return, but when he’s drawn back to protect the captivating Esme, his fragile sobriety and peaceful life are shattered. Esme, bound by the church’s cruel dictates, yearns for freedom, and together, she and Ulysses find themselves caught in a dangerous web of secrets, politics, and rebellion.

The chemistry between the characters is electric, with Ulysses’ internal struggle between protecting Esme and defying the very system that enslaves them both creating a heart-pounding tension throughout. The stakes are impossibly high, and as secrets unravel, their growing bond is both beautiful and tragic. The stakes become life or death as they face the consequences of their defiance.
What sets this novel apart is the intricacy of its world-building. The Church of the Ninth Order is more than just a backdrop; it’s a character in itself, shaping the fates of those trapped within it. The cult’s oppressive hold on its members is oppressive and suffocating, yet its shadow is also a place where defiance can flourish, even if it means risking everything. The moral complexity of the choices Ulysses and Esme face—whether to protect one another or to stand up against the system—keeps the narrative taut, every decision having far-reaching consequences.

At its core, Chosen Daughters is a story about the price of freedom, the nature of love, and the cost of defying the system that’s designed to control you. If you're a fan of high-stakes romances set in dystopian worlds full of secrets and betrayal, this novel will keep you turning the pages long into the night.

Review:
A well paced, rather brisk read (260 pages) that still packs a dramatic punch! Ulysses was once part of a religious type cult (the previous book in the interconnected series sheds more light on that but one can read this as a standalone as i did). Called the Order, he was brought up in it, but was also left with some emotional fall out from the events of the first book (having also been shot! ). He works at the newly revamped Order as a counselor and befriends soft spoken and sheltered Esme. A bit of a forbidden love blooms and it was so tender and sweet.

Amidst their secretly growing feelings, Esme's friend is murd3red and we get an element of suspense. There's great tension as our couple has to navigate the tabooness of their relationship since she's engaged to another (whom she doesn't want to marry). Ulysses is so admirable, in his want to free her, snuff out the controlling nature of this cult (where women aren't schooled, meant to marry and homemake only) , and overcome the demons of his past. A recovering alcoholic, he has the occasional struggle, and he's very human and I loved him and how he fought for Esme.

She gives him strength, allows him to see his worth when he didn't, and is wholly the kindest spirit. But she also has claws of her own when need be to protect herself. They go up against the oppression of this group and we get a centered drama along with a strong couple.

Very akin to Handmaid's Tale, so you'll love this if you like those vibes. I fell for this couple so fast. Uly beats temptation, Esme finds freedom, and they both get peace and true love. They fight hard for it and I loved their journey!

This book was so good 😍. The book had the perfect blend of romance and mystery which will keep you hooked from the beginning. This book made feel so many emotions one moment I was literally giggling and blushing while swooning over the characters while on the other hand I was bawling my eyes out while reading how much the characters had suffered. I absolutely loved the FMC, Esme she was so strong. Even after so much suffering and going through a lot she never lost hope and the will to fight. The way she took her stand and finally rebelled was very satisfying to read. Also, the way she supported Ulysses and made him feel loved and cherished was soo good 🥹🥹 She made us realise there is always light at the end of the tunnel and we should never give up and keep fighting.

And Ulysses, OMG!!I absolutely love this man . He was so broken and vulnerable yet he always protected Esme in every possible way he could. He always placed Esme's needs before him and still believed that he was not good enough for her. He had suffered so much, yet he always wanted the best for others and vowed to change the rigid ways of the cult.

Overall this was great romantic suspense book, which will keep you hooked from the first page 😍😍

"Chosen Daughters" by Jessica Carrasquillo – A Dark & Gripping Read You Can’t Put Down!

Okay, book lovers, let’s talk about a novel that will have you hooked from page one—Chosen Daughters by Jessica Carrasquillo. If you enjoy stories set in eerie, oppressive societies where characters fight for their freedom, this book is exactly what you need on your TBR.

You know that feeling when a book pulls you into its world so deeply that you forget everything else? That’s what happened to me with Chosen Daughters. It’s dark, emotional, and filled with high-stakes tension. The story revolves around characters trapped in a strict religious cult, and trust me, it doesn’t hold back when exploring themes of power, survival, and defiance. But what really makes it shine is the raw emotion—it’s not just about rebellion; it’s about the people behind it, their fears, their struggles, and the bonds they form.

Jessica Carrasquillo’s writing is immersive, pulling you into every moment, and making you feel the weight of each decision. And if you love slow-burn tension, complicated relationships, and characters who refuse to accept their fate, Chosen Daughters delivers all of that beautifully.

Fair warning—this isn’t a lighthearted read. It’s intense, but that’s what makes it unforgettable. If you loved The Handmaid’s Tale or enjoy dystopian novels with a strong emotional core, you’ll want to grab this one as soon as it’s out.

Are you adding Chosen Daughters to your reading list? Let me know—I need to talk about this one with someone! 📖🔥

✨ ARC REVIEW ✨

This was such a beautiful suspense-thriller romance! The emotions, plot, and everything else were crafted perfectly. I have never read a cult-related book or anything in this genre, and that was what made me sign up for this book, and I’m glad that I did 🫶🏻

This novel will hook you from the very first page. The story depicts a sinister cult where self-proclaimed leaders abuse their power, victimising vulnerable teenagers and justifying their actions through twisted religious doctrines. They systematically brainwash and abuse these children, maintaining a relentless cycle of control. I love how Jessica portrayed every emotion, keeping it so raw.

Ulysses and Esme are such a beautiful couple. I love how their love story takes such a beautiful shape in this chaos of a cult. Ulysses, our MMC, is such a gentle soul. He tries to help and protect everyone even though he is struggling with his own problems, emotions and everything. The way he tries to protect Ez from the very start and goes beyond to protect her was so heartwarming. Esme, our FMC, is so remarkably strong. Despite a lifetime of scrutiny and control within the cult, Esme never forgot her fighting spirit. She never stopped dreaming about her life outside the cult, and when it was time to take control of her life or stand up against the cult, she did not back down and fought with her all. I also loved how Ez loved Uly unconditionally. Even though he didn’t believe in himself, she saw and loved him with all his flaws.

The epilogue was so beautiful and my favourite. It was so emotional and heartwarming 🥹❤️

If you are into a story filled with suspense and thriller with marriage of convenience, age gap romance and a sinister cult with strong and captivating characters, then this book is definitely for you.

Thank you @swipethebook.pr and @jessica_carrasquillo_ for introducing me to this gem 🥹🫶🏻

I received a copy of this book from the author and am honored to share this completely honest review!

I'm so happy Jessica Carrasquillo listened to her readers and gave us more Ulysses! This is an incredible story to go with an incredible character.

Chosen Daughters is the 3rd book I've read by Jessica Carrasquillo and though I've loved all of her books so far, this one is my favorite! I do recommend reading Mysteries of the Southern Gothic before this one. Chosen Daughters is a standalone, but Ulysses is introduced in Mysteries of the Southern Gothic and you will appreciate his journey so much more if you read that first. It's also a great, quick read, so why not? :)

Like Jessica's previous books, Chosen Daughters is a high-stakes romantic thriller. My average time for finishing her books is 2 days, once the plot gets going, I cannot put these books down!

This story has the perfect mix of thrills, romance, suspense, and spice. The spice is so well-written, it's open door but not overly explicit. The spicy moments are sexy, while adding to the plot and aiding in the development of the characters.

As much as I tore through the climax of this book, it is so action-packed and intense, the ending was my favorite part of this story. The ending is like the sun breaking through the clouds after a storm and as much as I'd love to say more, I'll leave it at that to avoid spoilers. 🫶🏻

This book does have some dark content, please check the content and trigger warnings before reading it!

Thankyou Jessica Carrasquillo and Swipethebookpr for the arc, it was an interesting read!🖤

The chosen daughters by Jessica Carrasquillo had me hooked. This book was so messed up but it also kept me on the edge of my seat.

The story takes place in a cult where teens are either abandoned or left behind by their parents to get them fixed, and young women are groomed, abused and treated horribly to instill discipline and obedience.

The main characters, Esme and Ulysses are both strong and passionate individuals which makes them likeable. The cult has taken so much from Esme since childhood but she stayed strong. Ulysses never wanted to return to the cult and was going through a heartbreak. After meeting Ulysses, Esme is filled with hope that she'll be able to live a life different from the one at the cult, from being able to pursue her hobbies and eating her favorite food. Both Ulysses and Esme are both damaged souls trying to find peace and freedom.

The chemistry between them was electric, with a little bit of slow burn. I loved how Ulysses decided to support Esme no matter what decisions she made, as he should!

Reading about the cult truly made me think if practices like this still exist where women and children are harassed and oppressed.

This book was an intense rollercoaster ride with a satisfying conclusion. There were also a few characters that i absolutely hated, but let's not talk about that - I was truly absolutely disgusted. You'll know once you've read the book.

You should read 'Chosen daughters', if you love books with dark cult stories with complex themes and a good amount of romance.

This one was so good 💯 🤌✨💫

The tropes are-
Sinister cult
Virgin FMC
Tattooed MMC
Age gap
Marriage of convenience
Touch her and ☠️
That's my wife

This is the third book by the author and a part of series yet it can be easily read as a standalone too. I had read the author's previous work yet this one was more favourite as the dystopian cult setting of this book was refreshing to read after the repeated romcoms nowadays.

Our FMC, Esme's fate is being finalised since she entered into the church and the cult. She isn't happy yet she is bound to follow the rules and regulations of the church. The author has portrayed the dark side of the society where women aren't given the opportunity to choose or the freedom to pursue their own desires and wishes. The girls in the church are bound to follow the instructions passed on to them and failure to follow the same results in punishments.

Our MMC, Ulysses has his own story and reasons to stay away from the church yet when he had the opportunity to free Esme and bargain himself, he did it in a blink as he wanted to give her the taste of life she wished to enjoy, the freedom of choose and enjoy her life on her own terms. Their bond was so well penned that i enjoyed each bit of it. This relationship growth was one of my favourite thing in the book apart from our wonderful protagonists.
The story has high-stakes romance of oppression, defiance and forbidden love. I have said it earlier too and which quote it again! This is my favourite book from the author's works and definitely recommend you to read it!!

Blurb
Ulysses never planned to return to the cult. The Church of the Ninth Order shaped his darkest memories, and while love drew him back into their oppressive community, heartbreak left him stranded. Clinging to his fragile sobriety, he plans to keep his head down and distract himself with his
art. But when he's asked to counsel the enchanting Esme, staying detached is no longer an option.

As a Chosen Daughter, Esme's survival depends on her submission. Bound to marry a much older
church elder, she dreams of escaping to the world she lost. Ulysses promises to protect her, even if it means navigating the church's sinister politics in ways he never expected.

When Esme uncovers a deadly secret that could bring down the entire Order, their defiance becomes rebeltion. Now, Ulysses must choose: silence Esme to protect them both or honor her right to take a stand-a choice that could cost them their lives.

Chosen Daughters is a book packed to the brim with trauma, depression, loss, violence, misogyny, sexism, and emotional abuse but also love, healing, friendship, found family, and hope.

This was my first book by Jessica Carrasquillo but i'll be lying if i said it'll be the last. Her way of stroytelling is so captivating and beautiful. I was hooked from the first page.

Esme & Ulysses' story healed me in ways I never thought I needed. I love how they anchored and healed each other.

Ulysses thinks he's a fuck up and I haven't read the previous book in the series so I don't know much about how low he had been in life but his character development in this book leaves me in complete awe.

Esme, my sweet Esme. She is an adorable little thing, with child-like wonder and so much to say, and explore. She endured so much at the hands of the Order but didn't give up. Her act of defiance through panting on the chapel ceiling made me just love her more.

I won't say anything more but if you're looking for a book that would make you weep, giggle slightly, magically but slowly cure your depression, and make you fall in love unhurriedly? Go for this beauty.

Also, I hated every Elder and would beat the living fvck outta them if i had the chance, no cap.

Overall, this book, without any doubt, is one of the easiest five star books I've ever read. 🖤

🦚For every daughter who was never as cherished as a son.🦚

*Chosen Daughters* by Jessica Carosquilla is a captivating and emotional read, blending romance and mystery with a powerful narrative. The story follows Esme, a "Chosen Daughter" raised to obey the Lord's rules, who gradually falls in love with Ulysses after a marriage of convenience. Esme's strength, loyalty, and pursuit of justice drive the plot, while her deep friendship with Mary adds warmth. Ulysses’ journey of self-discovery and love for Esme is heartwarming, with his protective and thoughtful nature standing out.

The book explores intense themes like misogyny, religious cults, abuse, and trauma, with a gripping atmosphere that keeps readers engaged. The characters' emotional depth, particularly Esme’s resilience and Ulysses’ vulnerability, make their relationship feel real and meaningful. The story is both heart-wrenching and inspiring, delivering a message of hope and the power of second chances.

While some parts of the book felt slow, the overall suspense and romance make it a must-read, especially for fans of marriage of convenience, age gaps, and gothic storytelling. The bond between Esme and Ulysses, along with the emotional highs and lows, makes this an unforgettable book.

ARC Review: Chosen Daughters by Jessica Carrasquillo
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chosen Daughters is a compelling and immersive read, featuring well-developed characters and a richly crafted narrative.

The story follows Esme, one of the "Chosen Daughters," who has been raised to believe that women must remain silent and obedient to the Lord's rules. When Ulysses marries Esme to protect her, she gradually begins to understand him, and their relationship deepens as she finds herself falling in love with him.

Esme's unwavering friendship is the heart of this story, driving her relentless pursuit of justice. Her strength and determination define the narrative, showcasing the depth of her loyalty and resilience.

One of the standout characters in the novel is Mary, who quickly became my favorite. Her intelligence and kindness make her an inspiring presence throughout the story.

I truly appreciated Ulysses' thoughtfulness, particularly in the moment when he chose not to drink alcohol, knowing it would upset Esme. His consideration for her feelings added depth to his character.

Ulysses' journey of self-discovery leads him to a profound realization—the only future he truly desires is one with Esme as his wife. This moment of clarity is one of the most compelling aspects of the story, bringing emotional depth and fulfillment to their journey.

Jessica Carrasquillo masterfully weaves a story of love, loss, and courage, making Chosen Daughters a truly unforgettable read.

Songbird Books

Jessica Carrasquillo knows how to put the words on paper that we readers want to gobble up. Not only that, but she listens to us. Chosen Daughters features Ulysses, who was first introduced to us in The Manchineel. This book is interconnected to the first two books in the series, with similar themes, locations and a few characters, but can totally be read as a standalone. That being said, let’s get to the good stuff!

Ulysses has returned to The Church of the Ninth Order. While at one time this cult stole everything from him, in his return he found peace in the solitude and could focus on himself, heal, remain sober and try to recover from his past. That is, until he meets Esme and is asked to step up, be more active with the church their young people and do some counseling. The more ingrained he gets into the church, the more damage and wrongdoing he finds. Worry not, love and a spicy romance is in the air giving hope for the future and reason to burn the midnight oil to see what happens next.

For readers who love a book where the chemistry is perfect, the hate is vile and the ending is perfect – this is for you!

I am terrible at telling the tropes of a story, so this was provided for me: • Forbidden Love • Protector/Protected • Forced Marriage • Slow-Burn Romance • Found Family • Secrets & Betrayal
• Morally Gray Choice• Age gap

Chosen Daughter is a hauntingly beautiful tale of redemption, healing, love, and self-discovery set against the eerie backdrop of a sinister cult. With its gothic atmosphere and deeply layered characters, this book is not just a romance—it’s a journey through pain, trust, and the pursuit of self-love.

At the heart of this story are Ulysses and Esme, two broken yet breathtakingly resilient souls. Ulysses, our gentle giant, is not just defined by his tattoos and overgrown hair, often tied into a beautiful bun, but by the depth of his pain, strength, and unwavering courage. He isn’t the fallen hero—he is the man who stood up despite everything. His devotion to Esme is both fierce and tender, a love that protects rather than possesses.

Esme, on the other hand, is a character whose journey is just as powerful. Though shattered by faith and trust, she is resilient, strong, and deeply human. Watching her navigate through mystery, fighting for herself and those she loves, is truly inspiring.

The mystery and suspense woven into the story make it all the more gripping, and the author does an incredible job of creating an immersive gothic world that pulls you in and doesn’t let go. Chosen Doctor is not just a romance—it’s an exploration of the human spirit, the power of healing, and the beauty of love that sees beyond scars. If you love dark, atmospheric stories with emotionally complex characters, this book is a must-read!

This book took me on a wild emotional ride - one minute I was giggling and swooning over the characters, the next I was bawling my eyes out as their heartbreaking struggles ripped my heart apart😭

The MMC, Ulysses returns home, his spirit battered by the weight of his past failures. Yet, he holds onto a glimmer of hope – a chance to redeem himself and challenge the oppressive forces that have consumed the Order. On the other hand, Esme's journey (FMC) is a testament to the human spirit's capacity for resilience and growth. Her quiet strength and unwavering determination make her a deeply relatable and admirable character. As a chosen daughter, she's conditioned to obey, to conform, and to surrender her autonomy. But Ulysses' presence in her life awakens her to the realization that she possesses an inner strength, a resilience that can empower her to challenge the status quo and forge her own path❤️

This book masterfully weaves together romance and mystery, crafting a narrative that's both captivating and unputdownable from start to finish. With its perfect balance of swoon-worthy romance and intriguing mystery, this book will keep you on the edge of your seat, guessing until the very end👉🏻With👈🏻 its addictive blend of thrills, suspense, and romance, this story is an unpredictable and unforgettable ride. From heart-stopping twists to romantic interludes, every moment is expertly crafted to keep you guessing and leave you craving more🎀

The story is set a few months after the chaotic events of 'Mysteries of the Southern Gothic', and Ulysses is back to a familiar comfortable existence with Sophie. Until one day she deliberately demands to visit her family, who live in the compound of the Church of the Ninth Order which is under the leadership of her father, Lang.

Ready to even walk on this path of fire for his love, Ulysses agrees but ends up getting abandoned (yet again) amongst this oppressive lot of zealots and their twisted ideals of traditions, as they try to get him assimilate to the new laws and responsibilities.

Even in such a drab place, his path crosses with a gentle yet determined Esme, and together they navigate the curve balls life throws at them, and sometimes along the line, they fall in love.

Only this time, they are at a pioneer position to bring about changes amidst the anarchy that ensues, rescuing & rebuilding a safe haven from ruins of the prison.
Battling their personal demons, can they find love, redemption and even peace?

My thoughts:
I loved the journey of healing that Uly took in this book, navigating moral obligations, past traumas and genuine connection within the place he detested all his life. The characters of Kia and Esme are well written, and I had a great time cheering for Ez multiple times she took a solid stand. It's a beautiful conclusion to their difficult lives, to find strength in love and dream for a better tomorrow.
