Can't Win 'Em All: A full-length romantic comedy

Rate this book
Ruby Stone has never been one to do what’s expected of her.
As the middle daughter of the influential Stone family—one of Las Vegas’s most infamous casino conglomerates—Ruby was supposed to go to the finest schools, marry the son of another Las Vegas bigwig, and pop out a few kids while hosting fundraisers for worthwhile charities.
She did none of that and instead opted to work in the casino while thumbing her nose at her father. Fun as she found torturing her father, she was also lonely.
In addition to being head of security for the Stone Casino, Rex Carter is best friends with Ruby’s brother Zach. They have one hard and fast rule—no dating sisters—which Zach broke when he married and fell in love with Rex’s sister. Rex has no intention of doing the same until the alcohol starts flowing at an engagement party and dancing leads to…well…a really hot night.
Rex and Ruby have known each other for a really long time. They’ve always gotten along. That doesn’t mean that they’re ready to have a baby together. However, that’s exactly what’s about to happen.
Ruby doesn’t need help. She’s prepared to do this on her own.
Rex is torn. He’s not ready for fatherhood and yet…maybe, just maybe…he is. On top of that, he might be ready for something else too, like a full-time relationship with a woman he respects and loves.
He just needs to get Ruby on the same page with him.
Ruby might be at a crossroads, but she’s still the same woman who never follows the rules. She’s going to forge her own path.
Except…is it possible her path coincides with Rex’s path? No. Definitely not. That’s not possible. Is it?

If you read book one, you would know Rex Carter is Olivia’s older brother and a self-proclaimed man whore. Here's the thing: since he lost his wingman and best friend, Zach Stone, to his sister, forever —not just for the year as he suggested when he came up with the hair-brain idea. It leaves him at loose ends, if he had known that it would be the outcome, he would have figured something else out. But he wouldn’t have. Deep down he’s always known how much they care for one another, but didn't want to deal with it. But now with all the uproar of their family exploding because of what Olivia found out about Zach’s father. About his long history of embezzlement, and what he had been using it for.

How he thought he could bamboozle his children mainly the girls. The sexist bastard planned to take over their stock when he divorced their mother. But when the rude awakening came with Olivia's audit, per Zach’s orders, and his daughters were brought in along with Rex for security, Olivia, after the scheme he had plotted was revealed. He found out from his daughters, whom he had thought he could manipulate all these years, that they were smarter than he gave them credit for.

They did some digging into family history, wills, trusts, and the business. And it all belongs to their mother and any of them with their mom’s bloodline not his. And to stay out of jail, he had to give back all the shares he had in the casino to them, leaving him with only three shares, which would net him $20,000 a month. He had to sign paperwork for other things too. But Rex knew that wasn’t the last they would hear of him. Then it was time for the engagement party for the married couple, Zach and Olivia. Didn't matter that they were already married; this time, they were going to do it up right so all their loved ones could be a part of it.

Rex’s eyes keep noticing Ruby Stone and vice versa. He had no idea why but his heart did, just not his mind yet. Once things got underway and the girls were dancing, Olivia broke away to come talk to Zach who was getting mushy. Rex bailed. He tried to leave the party, but the chat he had with Zach about him slowing his roll on the dating front irked him. Not to mention it also disappointed him. He didn't think Zach saw him in such a bad light. Yes, he went out a lot and was with a lot of women on his arm, but he didn't bed all of them. There are other ways to have fun without having s-e-x.

He was walking toward the door when Ruby stopped him asking him to dance with her. He said he was just heading out, but she pleaded with him. Of course, he gave in to her, it was Booby Ruby The girl he loved to tease. He had always loved to tease her ever since they met when they were much younger. However, she was one of Zach’s mean older sisters a beautiful one, but it didn't matter she was Zach’s sister. In reality, she was only a year and a half older than they were. So the two of them continued to drink and dance.

Until, they woke the next morning in Olivia’s bed. Then, it just got weird. Bottom line neither could admit they liked it too much was at stake. Then there was their long-standing way of poking the bear when they were around each other. So they decided the one-and-done was best for the best until they got up and caught sight of each other in the full monty and then decided a one-and-done morning style would be the best. See what it took to bring these two to the right frame of mind to become a couple. You won’t be disappointed.

my Favorite

A different starting point for Avery Kane’s romances. Ruby and Rex face a shock but after a lifetime of being friends it all comes down to a night together.
Can they stay friends? Will Ruby have to do it all herself?

Great story.

More, please

I've enjoyed the snarky magic stories from Amanda M. Lee, but this story was even better. I'm impatient for more from Avery Kane.

Fabulous

Love this new genre! She is my favorite author. Fun, fast paced book. Great story line and even better characters. Hopefully there will be more with this family.

Well Done

A well written romance. Not too spicy, not too graphic, not saccharine sweet. Of course I read the second book first. I definitely recommend.

We follow Ruby and Rex- childhood friends who face results that they did not expect after too many cocktails at an engagement party. This is a fast-paced story with mostly endearing characters.
