No Ordinary Men #3

BEFORE HIM: PRIMA DI LUI

Rate this book

Dovrebbe essere felice, no?

This book kept getting recommended to me on Facebook, so I decided to give it a shot.

First we meet Roman and Kennedy when they are in Vegas separately enjoying vacations with their friends. Kennedy is from Oregon and Roman is from Australia. They meet and due to some fortunate circumstances, they end up spending the evening alone together away from their friends. They end up getting married because “While in Vegas!” and spending one unforgettable night together. Roman wakes up to some devastating news and has to abruptly leave, but not before exchanging their contact info to stay in touch.

Fast forward eight years and Roman walks into a coffee shop in Oregon and sees Kennedy for the first time in eight years. But she’s not alone; she is with her eight year old son. HIS eight year old son.

Roman decides right then and there that he wants to drop everything from his current life (where he lives, his job, etc.), in order to be there for Kennedy and their son Wilder. He wants to be the man that she deserves and wants to make up for lost time with both of them. Roman has never stopped loving Kennedy after that one night. Kennedy is resistant to allowing herself to have feelings for Roman, but he is determined to break down her walls and let him in. The problem is, Kennedy has been harboring a secret from the last day that they saw each other. Will they be able to survive it once she is forced to open up and tell him how she wronged him? Or will they have to just stay civil coparents?

Okay, so first off, I will say that I absolutely LOVED Roman. He is the type of man that anyone would want in their lives - he’s a genuine, caring man who has an amazing heart. Once he knew he was a father, he immediately stepped up, but at the same time never pushed Kennedy for anything that she wasn’t comfortable with. Might I say he is the perfect man? His relationship with Wilder just filled my heart with so much joy. While neither of them realized how much they needed each other, they both opened their hearts and had the best father/son relationship.

Now let’s talk about Kennedy. I am not going to sugarcoat it; she sucked. She was the worst to Roman. I understand that she was trying to protect her heart, but she was just flat out mean to him constantly! I mean I got to 72% of the book and she still hated him as much as she did when they first saw each other in the coffee shop. She also let Roman think that it was all his fault that he never met his son, which wasn’t the case. I don’t want to give too much away, but she just sucked. I wished that by the end she would redeem herself, but she really didn’t. She is the main reason for the 3 star rating.

"Before Him" is the story of Kennedy and Roman.

Hero and heroine have a one night stand, after which the hero disappears.. The heroine ends up pregnant, unable to find the hero and then raises the kid on her own.
The story begins with the hero re-entering their life and learning the truth. There's a lot of flashbacks as they try to navigate their new reality and deal with old emotions.

The premise was OK. Second chance romance with secret baby works for me. However, I struggled with the extremely slow pace, Gen z lingo and one of my pet peeves- hero getting mad at heroine dating in his absence tropes. I skimmed the second half and was glad to finish it.

Didnt work for me.

It's been a while since I've read a Donna Alam book and now I'm wondering why, because this was such a great story. I'm usually not a fan of secret baby stories, but I really enjoyed how this one played out.

I received an advanced copy of this book and my review is entirely my own unbiased opinion.

Kennedy is a college student who goes on a girls trip to Vegas to celebrate a friend's 21st birthday. While there, they meet a group of guys from Australia. Kennedy immediately sparks the interest of one of them, Roman and they spend the rest of the night together. They have a great connection and the chemistry is oh so strong. They make the impulsive decision to get married and then spend the rest of the night in bed. In the morning, Roman awakes to several missed texts and calls from his family in Australia and learns there is an emergency he needs to return home for. He packs up to leave, exchanging info with Kennedy and promises to return. After he leaves, Kennedy learns that Roman betrayed her, (he actually didn't) and when she learns she is pregnant, she spends the next 7 years raising her son alone, never reaching out to Roman. She thinks he has forgotten about her. He hasn't. In fact, he spends the next 7 years looking for her to no avail until one day fate steps in and brings them face to face. Seeing her again only reinforces his belief that they are meant to be together, and when he finds out he has a son, he takes that as another sign that they belong together. Kennedy however isn't so sure. She is slow to trust. Everyone she has ever loved, has left her. So despite how much she would love to give in and give Roman a chance, fear holds her back. Roman puts everything he has into getting to know his son and to getting Kennedy to fall in love with him again. It was perfect. Nothing to outrageous or over the top. Giving her space when she needed it and gently nudging her when she needed it. I love how certain and determined he was.

I was a little annoyed with Kennedy because of the secret she kept about Roman's so called betrayal. That she so easily believed it, held on to it and didn't question Roman about it. Considering the source, no matter how much she thought it was possible, she should've questioned him. She should've reached out to him when she found out she was pregnant, even if she believed what she did. I would've liked there to have been a better reason for keeping it to herself. I understand feeling unworthy of love, feeling betrayed, but something like pregnancy should trump those feelings for the sake of the baby and the father. That is the reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of five. It was Roman with his unwavering faith & determination and how he pursued Kennedy that saved this story for me. He handled everything perfectly, even when he found out why she never told him. He wasn't a push over, yet he called her out when she needed to be. He pushed, but he didn't overdo it. He was impossible not to fall in love with. And let's just say his dirty mouth was the icing on the cake!

So if you are a Donna Alam fan, or a fan of love at first sight and secret baby tropes, I would absolutely recommend this book.
Prepare to swoon!

This is only my third book by this author, but I absolutely love the way she writes!

"I wanted her like I'd wanted nothing else. Before or since."

When Kennedy Harper and Roman Phillips meet in Vegas, they have an instant connection and undeniable chemistry. Small-town girl meet worldly-wise Aussie guy. A wild, unforgettable night was had and promises made, but their connection was lost. Fast forward eight years and Roman is unexpectedly back in Kennedy's life - he's the new tenant of her vacation rental - the pixie house at the bottom of the garden. He's overjoyed to see her. She's not so overjoyed to see him. Because she's got secrets.

"I know what I was put on this earth for. I feel in the marrow of my f*cking bones I was made to love her.”

This was a fabulous read. Roman was charm personified! He was cheesy, funny, so unbelievably caring, and just a complete goner for Kennedy. She's defensive, prickly and anxious for him to be on his way. I was frustrated by her attempts to deny a future between them because her secrets were holding her back. However, Roman - God love that man! - he was so patient and persistent in his conviction that Kennedy and their son was his raison d'etre. I loved the way they met and how things quickly gathered momentum between them, but my heart broke for the time they spent apart. This story was super hot, amusing, and heartwarming, with some fantastic side characters. I couldn't get enough of it!

hear me out: i have a thing for books that has marriage in vegas… so, no way could i’ve given other rating than 5 stars. AND SURPRISE BABY? (sorry is one of my guilty pleasures…)

kennedy and roman were destined to be together. they were perfect to each other, it’s too bad they had to wait EIGHT YEARS to see this clearly (although roman always knew 😉). i mean…… the guy searched for her for EIGHT YEARS after only seeing her for a day (less than 24 hours together) - i will repeat it: EIGHT FUCKING YEARS!

whipped man? yes, please! gimme

their chemistry was super hot crazy crazy 🔥 and the cute scenes were 😭 everything to me. how roman accepted the fast as possible how he was a dad and it was so beautiful to see him really trying to conquer wilder - their son.

i also loved the dual’s pov cause it was amazing to see roman trying to show K how they were perfect to each other and kennedy falling in love with him…. and the past/ present scenes were very well done (and usually i hate past scenes but it got me sooooo hocked i didn’t even care).

congrats, donna alam! i’m your new fan and i’ll be definitely keep reading all of your books :)

BEFORE HIM by Donna Alam is the story of Kennedy and Roman Phillips. At the start of this book we have Kennedy who is a college student going with her friends to Las Vegas to celebrate their friend April whose was having a 21 birthday. There the meet some guys from Australia. Kennedy hits it off with one of the guys and they end up having a wonderful night where they marry. But Roman wakes up to an emergency call and has to leave. Then there is a misunderstanding and Kennedy feels betrayed. Now about 8 years later in their present day.....Kennedy is a single mother to Wilder. Roman has been looking for Kennedy and he ends up finding her but Kennedy isn't so trusting of him. So he has his work cut out for him to earn her trust back and to get to know his son. Enjoyed their story. FYI: Kennedy is the sister to Holland whose story was in 'NO ORDINARY GENTLEMAN'. I have read that book which did add to my enjoyment of this one but I did think you could make it a standalone book if you wanted to.

This book is another Phillips brothers book but is read as a standalone. What a cute story that's overflowing with humor. Kennedy and Roman will definitely take you on an emotional roller coaster. He'll Win your heart with his charming ways and she'll drive you crazy with her negative talk. The story at the beginning is a familiar tale - girl meets boy, girl gets pregnant and boy is no longer around, etc. He finally tracks her down and the rest of the story will keep your interest. No shortage of angst or drama but finally a sweet ending. Small town second chance romance at it's best. I read a free advance copy via Bad Boy Updates and voluntarily chose to review it.

There is not an Alam book that doesn’t put a smile on my face. The way she writes with such heart and humour is what captures my attention from early on, right through to the end.

Kennedy and Roman meet in Vegas and sparks fly between them, this leads to a marriage and a drunk one-night stand. The next morning Roman has to leave for a family emergency, leaving Kennedy his contact information. He knows she is special and that she is meant for him. However, things don’t plan out how they should and Kennedy thinks she has been betrayed, which leads her to being pregnant and alone.

Fast forward seven years and fate brings Kennedy and Roman face to face again. One look at her kid's face and Roman knows that he is his. Kennedy has raised Wilder alone for the past seven years and Roman's appearance knocks her off balance. Roman is persistent in both getting to know his son and reacquainting with Kennedy into something permanent, as a family.

I loved that Roman never really gave up looking for his lost love over the years and that fate brought them together again. I loved his attitude and how determined he was to win her back. He was so sexy, made my heart flutter and won me over in no time.

Kennedy was a tougher nut to crack and although annoyed me a little with her aversion to give Roman a chance to prove himself, I understood her worries. But if I had a man like that after me, I’d be jumping in head first ☺️.

There is more angst with this read and I was desperate for them to get together because this pair are hot and steamy!

Overall, this was an enjoyable read that had me laughing out loud so many times, swooning over Roman and loving the side characters who cemented the feel of a small town and everyone knowing everyone’s business.

Aussies do it better

Kennedy and Roman, second chance romance at its best.
A feel good story about love at first site and the events that follow. When he has to leave to go back home after their one night together, Kennedy's life is changed forever. Seven years later and the sparks they had that one night flares back to life.
A hearty feel good book and I definitely love the fact that all of Donna's books are interlinked.
Looking forward to reading more...

Waffling….

As much as I wanted to love this book, there was too much waffling by the heroine, Kennedy to my liking. Roman is a saint to continue to indulge her idiosyncrasies. It wasn’t even until towards the end of the book that we were told why she didn’t get in touch with him. The book has a lot of fillers, too much in my opinion. I didn’t enjoy it.

I loved Roman and Kennedy’s story. It's not overly emotional, still light-hearted, sweet and fun. And there are a lot of hilarious moments especially when Jenner's involve. I absolutely loved that Roman fights hard for Kennedy and Wilder. He has his work cut out for him because Kennedy is so stubborn. Ngl, I was frustrated with her a lot of those times. Roman's basically an amazing guy, not only is he patient and sweet but he has been looking for Kennedy for years. Although it took them 8 years to come together. And if that means they're not meant to be I don't what is. I really enjoyed their story.

Couldn't really stand this heroine, made way too many excuses, and essentially deprived Father and son of a bond early on because of her insecurities. I just can't justify her actions, especially after that last piece.

Before Him was so good, so hilarious, and so entertaining. I loved all the laugh out loud moments. Roman and Kennedy and their second chance will pull at your heartstrings, but their chemistry and heat is worth it. I loved all the secondary characters and loved the MCs hea. This is a definite must read!!

Roman is #goals 🔥🔥

So much YES in this book!! I’m a sucker for secret baby and well done second chance romance, and this one was perfection. This wasn’t your cookie cutter version, and it was refreshing to see that the fmc was the “villain” in their separation even if she didn’t know it at the time. (She really wasn’t a villain at all, but their separation was due to her her choices).

Kennedy is a good girl who has had a rough life, has a POS mother that destroyed her self worth and dumped her and her sister on their Nana as children. So to say she has trust and self worth issues is an understatement. She is in Vegas for her college roommates birthday celebration when she meets Roman and his Aussie friends. They are both attracted instantly, and what starts as a night out ends with a secret marriage and an unexpected pregnancy. Roman gets a call before dawn that his father is near death, and has to leave for Australia. They exchange information and he promises to return to her. Only, he doesn’t find her for eight years. It’s serendipity that brings him into her shop just as she’s decided to give up the search for her. He is immediately overjoyed to see her, but she is less than thrilled, especially when their son steps up and sees his father for the first time.

This book was amazing. The emotions were tangible, and the struggle was real. I definitely wanted to shake poor Kennedy, yet at the same time you knew she was so damaged by her horrible mother that she was doing the best she could. She was a great person, a wonderful mother, but felt so unworthy of anyone loving her. And all Roman wanted to do was love her and their precious son Wilder. He was brilliant, and fought for their relationship. It was pure perfection, and I do not say that lightly. I love when the hero is 100% committed and will not back down! 🔥🔥🔥 The extended epilogue was the cherry on top of this perfection sundae too!

It's said "Good things come to those who wait".
They must have had Roman Phillips in mind when that phrase was coined, as even though it's been a wee while between wines with the Phillips Brothers, Donna Alam has arguably saved the best 'til last!

This second chance romance is exactly what this reader has been waiting for.
And, it includes all that I love from this author: witty dialogue, sizzling chemistry, a totally swoon-worthy hero, a generous helping of laugh-out-loud moments, a dash of angst and of course a well deserved, blissfully happy ending.

But said "happy ending" does not come easy for Roman and his "little love" Kennedy, whom we have briefly met, as she is the sister of one of Alam's previous heroines, Holland from NO ORDINARY GENTLEMAN.
The author throws time, a son and secrets in the way to keep this couple busy in what is a battle of hearts; between a stubborn, heart shielding Kennedy and a determined, committed and dreamily thoughtful Roman.

As usual, Donna provides her avid readers with a wonderful array of colourful supportive characters, and my stand out favourites in this story are Kennedy's elderly neighbours, Betty and Ursula, who really are the female equivalent of the Muppets old hecklers! Geriatric comedy gold!!

This author continues to pour such delicious heart warming stories onto the page, and I couldn't be more in love with this patiently awaited love story of Roman and Kennedy. 5 stars!

This book was amazing.
It's about the last of the Phillips' brothers from Australia, but set in America.
Boy meets girl.
Boy likes girl.
Girl mostly likes boy.
Girl want to party with besties but also hang with boy.
Until the next morning.
And then eight years later, boy shows up in girl's coffee shop.

There is sooooooo much going on with this book.
You want to love them and throttle them depending on the page.
But as you read their backstory, things make sense.
And you have to read to the end becuase it buttons up all the questions you have from day one.

Now i'm off to meet Roman's older brothers! YAY!!!!

Roman, Kennedy and Crew Will Stay With You After "The End" ❤⭐🔥❤

I absolutely love this story!!! Not your average second chance with a secret baby story, but one that will take you on an unforgettable journey of twists and turns.
They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas... Not so much in Kennedy and Roman's case. Eight years after meeting and secretly marrying Roman, Kennedy Harper takes care of everyone but herself, works hard to provide for her son Wilder and all without blinking an eye. Kennedy has trust and abandonment issues after her worthless money hungry mom left her and her sister with their Nana. Now the questions Wilder is asking about his dad is getting harder to answers... Until Roman walks into Kennedy's coffee shop out of the blue.
Roman Phillips has been looking for Kennedy and making stops in Portland yearly for the past eight years and now it's time to give up and move on... Until he comes face to face with her and a young spitting image of his family's resemblance. What starts out as a prank from his brother in booking a Pixie House just may give Roman a second chance at his own family.
Kennedy understands why Roman had to leave Vegas eight years ago, it was lies and a catty bit#h that destroyed her hopeful bubble and brought forth her issues of trust and self worth. Watching their son get to know Roman while staying in the other side of the hedge in her Pixie House is hard and a blessing at the same time. They are each carrying secrets, but what happens when those secrets are revealed?? Throw in best friend and barista Jenner, the nosey but entertaining older sisters next door, upcoming movie deal and visits from mommie missing, you will have no idea what is thing to happen next. Is there any chance for this millionaire Aussie and the mother of his child?? Get this just read to get your answers.
The characters are real to life and makes you want to be there to help anyway you can or just shake someone. You won't be able to put it down and you'll go through the total range of emotions (at Romans makeshift shower scene I busted out laughing so hard my husband asked me if I was OK). Absolutely wonderful characters, his/her POV, no cliffhanger. I also love his Ms Alam makes Wilder just as important and up front as Kennedy and Roman. I've read a few of Ms Alam's books and now it's time to catch up!!! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. Thank you Savannah May and Donna Alam.

This story was enjoyable though somewhat formulaic. 2 young people meet in Vegas, get married on the same night they meet, have an unforgettable meeting of the bodies. Then he gets called away suddenly, and despite leaving his contact information they don't see each other again. Then one day 8 yrs later he goes into a coffee shop in Oregon, where he finds her working and the mother of a 7 years old son. One look at the kid and he knows it is his. Then the drama begins. He want the relationship and she feels like she can't trust him.
Honestly, I was constantly annoyed with Kennedy. Her internal dialogue was littered with self flagellation. I read Holland's story and she had the same kind of internal dialogue. Plus, they are really both low on self esteem, and good at lying to hide what they really feel. As with Holland's story, this one feels about 200 pages too long.
Despite living in a small town, Kennedy is a modern day girl. It is hard to believe that in 8 years she has never seen anything about her baby daddy, since he has a career as in international model been on billboards, and has been in some music videos. She just never tried. And isn't that a crappy thing to do to both father and son. Maybe he wouldn't have wanted to be involved, but he should have at least been given the notification. Then there is Roman. He returns to America every year, and to Oregon with a vague hope of finding her. Since they got married he has both her married and maiden name. She runs a coffee shop with a Facebook page. Her nemesis had no trouble finding her through that. How hard was he looking? Just showing up in Portland, a city of well over Hal a million and looking around, is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Plus, since it turns out that he is more than pretty wealthy, he could have hired a PI and found her years before, if he was really that interested. So I say they are both responsible for the time gap, and that part of the story is manufactured BS. Her, because she didn't try at all, and him because his attempts were half hearted at best. The development of his relationship with his son was good. The examination of the toxic relationship that the sisters have with their mother, was valuable, because it partially explains their low self esteem.
Last, I borrowed this as an audio book from the library. I just didn't care for the whispery quality to the female narrator's voice every time she was giving us Kennedy's pov. It just grated on me.

Before Him is the second chance romance of Roman Phillips and Kennedy Harper.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas rights? Not in the case of Miss goody two shoes Kennedy who had an insta love connection with spontaneous, outgoing Aussie Roman who managed to woo her, fall for her, marry her, have the most incredibly dirty wedding night, unknowingly knocked her up and managed to lose her all in the short space of 24 hours.
As Roman was head over heels for Kennedy he spent the next 7 years looking for her, he would visit Portland every year in the hope of finding his wife but had no luck. So Roman has decided this year, his and Kennedy’s 8th anniversary will be his final year as he can’t keep doing it to himself, getting his hopes up only to lose a little piece of his soul when he leaves without finding her. Only this year his prayers are answered when he walks into High Grounds to collect the keys for the holiday rental to not only come face to face with his wife but a boy who has the same blue eyes as him and is the double of his nephew.
Roman was the perfect man, his love for Kennedy never wavered, even when she was being a pain the ass. The way he doted on Wilder had my dead ovaries crying, he really was dreamy. Kennedy’s self-worth had been knocked out of her by her vile money grabbing mother and being rejected by her father, so I understood why she behaved the way she did, however, she started to grate on me towards the end. Roman was a more patient person than I am.
If you love a super hunky, dreamy hero, a strong, independent heroine, a smart, sweet little boy, a hilarious best friend in Jenner and nosy old next-door neighbours like paintball gun toting, crow shooting Betty and her crow feeding sister Ursula then grab yourselves a copy today. I absolutely loved this and think my own nosy neighbours where ready to have my committed to the local mental hospital due to all the laughter coming from my garden when I was home alone.

I’m stuck between giving this book 3 or 4 stars. I’m going to be generous and give it 4 because of Roman, Wilder, and the cranky old ladies. Kennedy is my least favorite type of romance novel heroine, though, and mostly ruined the book for me. I can’t stand when the chick is angry and unreasonable for absolutely no purpose especially when the guy is a saint. Kennedy’s behavior makes no sense. It especially made no sense after the reader finds out she has a big secret, it’s her fault Roman never knew about Wilder and then she doubles down on being a jerk instead of being a decent human being. It’s hard for me to want a happily ever after for them after that. The thing that kept them apart was so small and petty but I’ve read this genre enough that I’ve lowered my expectations for meaningful and mature communication skills.
Another pet peeve that didn’t made this book a wow for me was how stereotypically gay Jenner was written and I found the dialogue hard to follow in scenes. There were some scenes I had to reread to figure out who was talking or what they were talking about. Then there was one part where I’m pretty sure Wilder is supposed to be on a camping trip with Annie but then Roman finds Annie at dinner when looking for Kennedy??? How did the editor miss that????
I honestly skimmed through some of this book. The steamy scenes were great. The premise was good. Roman and Wilder were adorable. Loved the cranky elderly ladies. I read for free through Kindle Unlimited and read to procrastinate yard work on a 94 degree day and not sure I’d recommend paying much to read otherwise though

Second chance romance with unexpected child.

Well written but I did not like the story even though the synopsis was promising. I had to skip pages because the story was too slow.

H and h met in Vegas 8 years earlier and married the same night.
The H had to go in the morning because he received a call from his family letting him know that his father had a heart attack and he left his contact details to the h.
She then went to her friends and one of them made her believe she slept with the H earlier and because of her insecurities, the h decided to tear up and lose his contact details and change her phone number right away.
She realised she was pregnant a few months later but that was too late. Of course, she explains her reason at the very end of the book and he gets angry.

I did not particularly like the H who was too cocky nor the h who was angry, mean and weak.
Again one of those weak heroines who kiss and jump the H the first time they get the chance to even though they swear they don't want to go there anymore.

I am not sure if the H stayed celibate for eight years but I understood he did not because he looked for her in other women but she did since she did not have time to date because of her child (so cliché). Suddenly, she tries to date another man just before inviting the H to come over to "discuss". Of course, he gets jealous and they have sex on the couch after the other guy left.

Their excuses for not reuniting earlier were bad excuses and I didn't feel connected at all to any of them.

It's the first time I read a book by this author and I don't feel inclined to read the sister's book.

Seven years have passed since that fateful night in Vegas, the night she met the man of her dreams, only to have him walk away the next morning with promises that he'd call. But those calls never came, and Kennedy has all but given hope that she'll ever see Roman again. That night changed her life in ways she never expected and there isn't a day that passes that she doesn't think of or curse the handsome man with stunning blue eyes that stole her heart. If only she could see him again...

Before Him is an emotional second chance romance that promises to leave your heart happy. This slow burn romance has moments that will drive you crazy, make you laugh out loud, and swoon the whole way through. These two were truly meant for one another, they met and fell hard for each other in an instant, but when morning came and life came calling it ended their love affair before it truly had a chance to begin. There were promises of keeping in touch, but those promises were not kept and life lead them in different directions. They have spent the last seven years wondering about one another and the life they let get away from them, but lucky for them fate is tired of waiting for them to take that step so it intervenes and throws them back together. But it isn't quite the happy reunion that it should be, there are a lot of hurt feelings between them and secrets to reveal. It's quite the entertaining and dramatic love affair!!

I really enjoyed this one, it's words were engaging and entertaining, and it's characters easy to love... and in my book it doesn't get much better than that!

I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
