The most dangerous monsters wear crowns.

For nineteen years, Kestrel Graeme has been locked away in a tower, fed stories of cursed beasts and corrupted magic. But when she escapes, she discovers the real threat isn’t monsters—it’s the royals who rule through lies and bloodshed. Captured and taken to Irongate, Kestrel must fight for her father’s life and master the strange magic awakening inside her…before it’s twisted into a weapon by the very crown she’s come to fear.

But she’s not the only prisoner behind Irongate’s fortified walls. Slain in battle and resurrected years later, Princess Elora has spent her second life in chains. Promised a throne but given a leash, she’s ordered to keep Kestrel close and steer her toward breaking the curse. Elora will play her part…but only if it brings her the one thing she truly craves: freedom.

Monsters still haunt the realm, but Kestrel and Elora refuse to be their prey. If they want a future beyond the ruins they inherited, they’ll have to wield the power within them—before their kingdoms crumble.

A Crown of Deceit & Ruin is a slow-burn sapphic fantasy romance perfect for fans of fairy tale retellings, dark magic, and star-crossed fates—featuring a starry-eyed Rapunzel-esque runaway with the heart of a hero, a distrusting princess of death, enemies-to-lovers tension, courtly intrigue, sapphic/bi longing, found family, ancient curses, and the dangerous temptation of forbidden power.

Over three years in the making, but it's finally finished!

Words cannot express how much time, energy, blood, sweat, and tears went into writing A Crown of Deceit & Ruin. This is my eleventh novel, and what I've learned over the years is that some books come easy; I wrote Soul of the Crow in a month, edited in another month, and it was published another month after that. Similar timelines were true for many of my other books too.

But then came A Crown of Deceit & Ruin.

Truth be told, I think a lot of the challenge was overcoming internal setbacks—the longer I worked on this book, the less certain I was that I would ever finish it, that it would ever be good enough, that I would ever feel pride over it. But some of the challenge was also around the story itself: this is by far the biggest world I've ever written in, with lots of political strife, various cultures and kingdoms with their own problems, and interweaving stories between dozens of characters! It took a lot of brain power to get everything setup correctly so that the rest of the trilogy (and hopefully subsequent standalone books) will work.

All of that said, I worried this day would never come—when the book would be ready for readers—but now that it's here, I am so proud that it has! This intro into Kestrel and Elora's story, the world of Grimtol, I think it's really rich and dark and beautiful, and I truly hope readers enjoy it because there are plenty more stories where this came from!

*ARC*

I am obsessed with this book! The characters are all amazing and I just fell in love with them so hard. Kestrel and Elora are just so easy to love, and you get drawn into each of their stories. And you just want to root for them from the beginning.

I absolutely love this world that Jessaca Willis has written, it's a world devastated by a curse but there are little bits of beauty still despite everything.

The side characters are amazing as well. I absolutely love Micah and Thom. I definitely need more of them in Book 2! The characters definitely make you come up with theories about what will happen to them because you just love them all so much!

A Crown of Deceit & Ruin has it all; daring escapes, secrets, tested loyalties, betrayal, first loves, friendships, curses, nightmares, a search for power. I could not get enough of this book, I did not want to put it down!

I desperately need book 2!! I have to know what happens! I am fully invested in this story.

INFINITY F*CKING STARS ♾️⭐️

I can officially say this is one of those books...the kind you obsess over between reading sessions, the kind you’re thinking about while you’re supposed to be doing literally anything else. This book owned me. I did not want to put it down, but I also didn't want to read it too fast and have it be over 😫

4% Update:
Well, damn. I’m already hooked. Elora is heir to the throne but has been a prisoner to her enemy for DECADES?? And now she’s being forced to marry the enemy prince to gain her freedom while still being chained. There’s magic. There are curses. There’s political scheming. Hell yes. I can already tell this is going to be a new favorite.

"there was no proof of their cruelty- she had no scars to show for all that she endured. That was part of the unbearable curse of being an Ashen: immortality and rejuvenation of the flesh. It made her the perfect prisoner of war"

Also, can we take a second to appreciate that Kestrel might be the coolest FMC name ever? She’s been locked in a tower her whole life, told that all other humans are either dead or feral, and when her protector doesn’t come back for a few days, she decides it’s time to break free. Her first encounter with another human? Oh, just the prince who she promptly kisses without knowing who he is. 😂 Yes, it was a little cheesy and over-the-top, but I promise it gets SO much better from there.

Kestrel’s journey from tower to world-traveling adventurer is filled with action, betrayal, found family, reluctant alliances, and major self-discovery. She’s thrown into chaos and just has to figure it out. Meanwhile, Elora, the other FMC, has her own complex storyline as an Ashen, part of a magical group hated and feared by humans. her touch will literally kill you even if that isn't the intention, hence her shackles. Even after she’s freed and betrothed to the prince, she’s still shackled, in a way. Her path intertwines with Kestrel’s, and their enemies-to-reluctant-friends-to-maybe more dynamic was one of my favorite parts of the book.

"they had both been prisoners, it's just that one of them didn't realize it"

15% Update:
I’m calling it now: this is the next big romantasy book. I can feel it in my bones. I tagged it as a 5-star read immediately because I’m already obsessed.

27% Update:
Okay, sure—I’m pretty sure I’ve guessed some of the main twists because I’ve read a lot of romantasy, but you know what? I don’t care. This is amazing, and I don’t want to put it down. It even has Tangled vibes in the best way.

40% Update:
This. Just. Keeps. Getting. Better. The blurb doesn’t do it justice. It’s non-stop action, and I’m hanging on every word.

78% Update:
I’m getting actual goosebumps. I don’t want to rush because I don’t want it to be over. But I’m confidently calling this INFINITY STARS already, and I still have 20% left. I also did NOT guess the plot twists. This is such a unique story and I didn't see these things coming 😍

"She was beauty. She was darkness. She was a Queen of Death"

Final Thoughts:
I literally thought about this book non-stop in between reading it. I’ve had a few infinity-star reads this year, and every time I think, “That was the best one yet.” But THIS. FREAKING. BOOK. Damn. It’s everything I want in a romantasy with action, magic, slow-burn sapphic tension, twists, friendships, betrayals, more betrayals, adventure, curses, princes, enemies, and reluctant allies.

You need this book on your shelf. No notes. Just read it.

Thank you SO much BookSirens for letting me ARC read this. I am genuinely blown away, and I don't know how to function after reading this.

📚 Title: A Crown of Deceit & Ruin
🖊 Author: Jessaca Willis
🖤 Genre: Dark Fantasy with Romantic Undertones
⭐️ Overall: 33.5/35, 96% A, for a 5 rating
🌶 Spice Level: 2; Kissing with thoughts of more.

To sum up A Crown of Deceit & Ruin, I will use the words of one of the story's own characters, not to be confused with Thom, Imaginary Thom.
“Not just nothing. There are monsters and death out here, and don’t you forget it.”

It seemed like there was a new monster to face every chapter. Literal and of the mental kind. I loved it! It made for a harrowing, yet also gut wretching tale.

The story is set in a cursed medieval world of magic and swords with majestic and unique creatures. It mainly follows Kestrel. She is a 19 year old who has been isolated from society who has to gather courage to leave her home in search of her missing father. She soon discovers she has a bigger role in the kingdom than she cares for. Creativity: 5/5; Plot: 4.5/5

Kestrel was the perfect protagonist for introducing this story, as expansive as the world of Grimtol is. She starts out naive to, well, everything. She has been kept away. So, as she learns, the reader learns. It does make for a slower pacing, but it layers in a lot of character development and setting while not being too overwhelming at once with the grand world lore. Carefully throwing in action and allowing the characters to process what happens. Kestrel herself struggles with keeping true to herself as she faces more dangers and corruption of royalty. In my opinion, she felt like an homage from the author to her readers, putting in someone who loves to read and has only experienced books to have a grand adventure of her own.

She wasn't the only lovable character. Elora broke my heart right away. She is the secondary point of view. She's been kept prisoner and tortured before we meet her. She is given more freedom as she is introduced, but is still a damsel in a guilded cage. I wanted to cry for her so many times as she put aside her real feelings to apease her masters. Bold Kestrel is a good balance to her sequestered meekness.

All the characters were layered like this. The spoiled prince, the vain queen, the minor characters like the guards. No one left out or forgotten. Even when they were acting predictable, they all had subjective reasoning behind their actions and a unique voice that distinguished personality. The settings even had life of their own, affecting the characters depending on if they were in the harsh desert, lush forest, or dank castles. Character Development: 5/5;
Characters: 5/5; Prose/Dialogue: 4/5; Setting: 5/5

Grimtol was such a dark and gritty, yet colorful and hopeful world. I wouldn't want to be a main character in the world, but I would visit it. It sucked me in. There wasn't a moment I didn't enjoy... from the beautiful and sweet moments as well as the bitting my nails, are they going to make it? moments. There was a lot going on but it was perfectly paced and had exactly what I want from the stories I read. A lot of adventure, with emotionally aware characters that pull me in. Enough bright spots to be hopeful, but stife as well make it feel real and give the story reason and substance. Enjoyment: 5/5

OHMYGOD what a ride.

I am so in love with every single aspect of this book, I literally can’t put it into words. The story, the characters, the plot, the twists CHEFS KISS

Let’s break it down✨

The Characters

I cannot explain how much my heart belongs to Kestreal. She was so perfectly written, so three dimensional. Kestreal has been locked in a tower for her whole life, until unexpected circumstances cause her to leave. I felt like I had never been in the outside world as I joined her on her discovery of it, the way she found beauty in everything? the wonder in things that we take for granted? i can safely say i will always see the beauty in the world now. I love how her naïvety was demonstrated without making her seem slow, how she showed such intelligence despite her lack of practical knowledge. How she was able to find her inner strength and stay true to herself😍

Elora is such a perfect balance, her quiet anger, her story of pain, but she still has a worthy core. How she is nervous about the potential of a true friendship/relationship but still manages to navigate it anyway. I love her character and I can’t wait to see how she develops and blossoms in the future.

Honorable mention- Micah, oh you have my heart and was really the cherry onto of a cake of lies and betrayal. The banter he demonstrated felt natural, his ease in the world seemed unforced and I loved every interaction with him (even when my heart broke a little)

The World

The world has been hit by a curse, one that ravaged the lands, transformed their rulers and destroyed the lives of the innocent- perfect. I loved seeing how even the seemingly smallest details were accounted for, how the nature was affected, the skies and their ever changing nature. I am DESPERATE to learn the secrets of The Maw and what it contains, next book?????

I love how we see so many different types of society’s, we see the “common” people banded together in mutiny bay, the kingdom that Kestreal is taken to with the Princes and hearing about Eloras home. How each place is so unique to the other. I love the different type of people we hear about and how there are such significant differences between the population and I can’t wait to find out what that all means.

The Plot

10/10, I loved it. I loved how as Kestreal discovered the world, we did too. I was gripping my kindle so tight at the twists and turns and had to put it down for a moment at the betrayals. Honestly, once we can do reviews with spoilers in- be READY. I have some choice words about some choice characters 🤬

I love how it meets fairytale with reality and seeing how life isn’t always like it is in a book (unfortunately)

Overall

I read this in pretty much one sitting, only taking time to sleep(boo) and already feel like i’m counting down the seconds until the next in the series is announced. I feel like i’m missing friends after finishing this and may have to do a reread already!

BIG SIDENOTE and most important question- IS FOX OKAY?! WHERE IS MY BABY!

A massive, massive thank you Jessaca Willis for the opportunity to receive this as an ARC copy. I am so grateful to have been part of the journey🩷

Kestrel has been trapped in a tower for 19 years, while her father Thom has ventured out amongst all monsters. But when Thom's been gone longer than usual and food is running scarce, Kestrel has no choice: she's got to leave the tower and go looking for him.
~
Elora has been resurrected after being killed in battle, but her second life has been as a prisoner. When she gets a chance at freedom she takes it.

This is a dark retelling, loosely based on Rapunzel and Persephone. Also a slow-burn sapphic/bi romance with grumpy/sunshine vibes and dual POV. Of course I wanted to read A Crown of Deceit & Ruin! I was immidiately drawn to Kestrel, even though I thought she was painfully naive to begin with (but who wouldn't be in her situation?), but she's got such a will to experience life and be the kind of adventurer she only read about in books, that it was impossible not to like her. It took a while longer to get to know Elora, and she seemed rather cold and unapproachable in the beginning, but soon the cracks were showing and they spoke to me.
~
"She was beauty. She was darkness. She was a Queen of Death."

The world that Jessaca Willis has built is under a curse and filled with monsters of all kind. It took some time to grasp the extent of the curse, and I was occasionally confused. If I could make a wish it would be to get a clearer picture of the curse earlier in the book, but it was revealed with time.

We also get to meet several memorable side characters, and it's not easy to determine which are villain or friend. Especially Kestrel gets decieved several times when she trusts the wrong person, and it makes me sympathise with her even more. The ending is quite epic - with high intensity! - and I'm so excited for the next installment when it comes out!

* I received an ARC from the author and I'm giving my honest review. *

Oh my god!! What a story! What a journey!

I absolutely loved reading A Crown of Deceit and Ruin. First off the writing is amazing, it's full of lavish descriptions and it carves out the story so well. I was hooked in as soon as I started and by the end I am left wanting more.
The characters are all equally created with a flare that brings them to life, each one had qualities that made them realistic. My favourites being Kestrel and Elora, they're so different but once you get into the story you realise they're not that much different after all... (Read the book to find out what I mean).
I loved the way the storyline progressed and how the chapters alternate between Elora and Kestrel, I loved getting the story from both characters. There's so much I could say about the storyline and the characters but I don't want to post spoilers, all I'll say is I wasn't surprised by Signe - what a B*.
I loved the ending, I'm so eager to see what happens next.
What a start to a new series - fantastic deserves all the stars!!

Thank you Jessaca for choosing me for your ARC team! I received an ARC copy of this book and am leaving my review voluntarily.

HOLY FUCK - the cliffhanger this book ends on alone would make me want to read the second 🤯 Elora and Kestrel are star crossed lovers 🤭 who meet, truly by the hands of fate.

After spending her life in a tower with only one human companion, Kestrel makes her way in the world and soon finds everything is not what she expects it to be. She meets the crown prince, and eventually makes her way to his castle where she meets her long-lost family, and the princes soon to be wife, Elora. I wish I would’ve gotten more of their blossoming friendship/situationship because it was the sweetest. I hope there’s more of that in book 2!

Unique magic system, curses, monsters at every corner - including the ones sleeping inside the castle - this book had it all! Can’t wait for book 2!

𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
I was sent this novel as an ARC from Jessaca! So thank you so much Jessaca for allowing me to read this novel early! Despite being sent this novel, these are my honest true feelings and have not been swayed or influenced in any way.

**There are slight spoilers! Be aware. Trigger Warning: this novel similarly to A Delicate Betrayal does depict animal sacrifice in regards to magic.**

For a little extra context I did read A Delicate Betrayal, the prequel novel, immediately before reading A Crown of Deceit & Ruin. For me I really enjoyed the extra context and I do think it provided a lot of extra details between the pre-existing dynamics between the characters present and mentioned in passing within the novel. I would highly recommend reading this first to really get the full grasp of everything going on.

I absolutely adored this novel! Jessaca is really amazing at building this perfect world that you just want to live in. Every place mentioned within Grimtol feels so different with their own ways of life and I want to read about every Kingdom and the people within it.

I really loved Thom and Kestrel’s relationship and how he does everything to protect Kestrel. He loves her so so so much and just seeks to protect her curious mind from the cruelties of the world. But Kestrel is wildfire, despite being kept protected and isolated her mind is so curious. I love how she speaks her mind and really tests the bounds of what is and isn’t ‘the right way to be’ in a place that has such high tensions. Elora honestly has my heart and is someone I relate to and seeing her blossom, it captivated me. Kestrel and Elora make so much sense to me as people, as allies, as lovers.. They’re so much alike in so many ways, but their ways of tackling things are just so different. It is a beautiful thing to see their love story unfold and I am dying to see what comes to them in the future. There are so many questions I have for other characters as well, but many have my heart in this novel. I also enjoyed seeing which characters' loyalties and loves were truly unconditional and which still hid a slight bit of condition. Jessaca really knows how to make some really complex characters with so many real traits. Thank you for allowing me back to Grimtol so soon.

𝙒𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙄 𝙍𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙙: YES! I adore Elora and Kestrel and they have my whole heart.

𝙒𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙄 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨: Absolutely. I have already read the prequel A Delicate Betrayal and will be waiting for the release of the next novel in the series!

*I am voluntarily leaving this review after having received a free copy of this book.*

An enjoyable adventure with two heroines I was rooting for the whole way through. Lots to like in this book. For one, I thought the worldbuilding was handled adeptly. Infodumping was avoided since one of the protags, Kestrel, also knows next to nothing about the world, so the reader learns along with her in a natural-feeling way. Also, I found the magic system to be intriguing, although it's not fully fleshed out, but I suspect we'll learn more about it in the sequel. There is a bit of a love triangle, but perhaps not in the way readers usually expect, and I appreciated that. That aspect kind of reminded me of the pseudo-love triangle in Tanya Huff's The Fire's Stone, but it, uhh. Gets resolved a bit differently here, lol. Loved the discussions on morality, history, and the nature of power, too.

The one place this book fell short for me was regarding the main couple. I liked their dynamic, I could see why they were initially attracted to one another, but they fall in love within 4 or 5 days of their first real conversation. Granted, extenuating circumstances were involved, but given both of their histories and past traumas, I just don't see that realistically happening for either one of them. I do think the trauma was handled well for both characters in most every other aspect except that one. I'm definitely interested in reading the sequel.

Wow. Just... wow. A Crown of Deceit and Ruin by Jessica Wills was an unexpected ride that completely captivated me from start to finish. It scratched a reading itch I didn't even realize I had, delivering everything I look for in a fantasy novel and more.

The characters in this book are simply phenomenal. I instantly adored Kestrel and Elora, whose journeys are both compelling and deeply emotional. Their dynamic is incredibly well-developed, and I found myself rooting for them every step of the way. Micah also stole my heart, and let's not forget the charming presence of the fox! The relationships forged and tested throughout the story are truly a highlight. Even characters like Darius, with his intriguing complexities, left me wanting to delve deeper into their stories.

The world-building is rich and immersive, pulling you into a realm filled with magic, mystery, and powerful forces at play. The pacing kept me on the edge of my seat, building steadily towards a truly exhilarating experience.

Honestly, everything about this book felt absolutely perfect. If you enjoy fantasy with deeply layered characters, a gripping plot, and a romance that will make your heart ache in the best way, you need to add A Crown of Deceit and Ruin to your TBR immediately. Highly, highly recommend!

I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) from the publisher from the author, Jessaca Willis. All opinions expressed are my own.

I love a good story. This book had it in spades.

Kestrel has spent most of her life in a tower locked away due to monsters overtaking the world. After her caretaker Thom falls to return on time, she dies in search of him despite the dangers.

Princess Elora has spent a majority of her time imprisoned in a dungeon due to her tribes ability to kill anything by a simple touch. Her shackles negate her death magic, but unfortunately, she herself can't be killed.

Prince Leighton and his brothers go on a mission to find a missing traitor in hopes of breaking the curse that had fallen across their world and turned many a person into monsters. He is also betrothed to the princess in hopes of uniting their kingdoms.

This ragtag gang, each with their own priorities but each guide by their desire to fix the world bands together to find the cure.

This novel plays with elements of Rapunzel, evil royals, and King Midas mythologies. I do not want to give too much away. There is quite a bit of world building and back stories. All is worth the wait when it comes together. The spice level is 🌶, this novel is not big on it, but don't let that dissuade you from reading.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment.

I was given an advanced copy for an honest review.

What I liked

The writing was v. engaging--it's the reason why I finished this novel. Most of the characters were interesting; I also found the MCs quite lovable. The worldbuilding (specifically the magic system) was solid.

What I didn't like

I had two issues w/this book that both departed from the same point: the dishonest marketing.

1. This book is classified as an "adult novel."

This is NOT true at all! The book is an upper YA novel.

Kestrel is 19-y.o.--which is something that's brought up in the book several times. Elora is of an undetermined age. She herself doesn't know her exact age. HOWEVER, she mentions that the first time she died, she was 20 y.o.. and so, that's the age she'll look like until she dies for realsies. [NB: this is due to her race of ppl having the ability to resurrect themselves.]

In addition, Elora's main storyline is abt regaining her freedom after being held captive for decades. As for Kestrel, her initial storyarc is abt her leaving her home to go find Thom (who is her "father"). In reality, her narrative is a coming of age: finding out how the world works, learning abt social interactions, etc. Basically, Kestrel's tale centers on her growing up a little (not fully maturing, per se.) Kestrel, whose perspective carries most of the story (even though this novel has dual POV), and her character journey aren't anything I categorize as adult.

2. This novel being promoted as a "slow-burn sapphic fantasy romance".

Which is a complete misrepresentation!

There's a marked difference between a fantasy book with some romantic elements (which is what this book actually IS) and an actual fantasy romance.

Stating that a book is a sci-fic/western/fantasy/what-have-you romance indicates a series of things that SHOULD BE PRESENT IN THE TEXT. And that doesn't happen here.

* The foundation of the entire plot comes from the romance itself.

That doesn't happen here. The actual story is abt finding a way to cure a curse, Elora gaining her freedom, and Kestrel learning abt who she is. The romance between Kestrel and Elora is secondary to the plot and not what FUELS it.

* There are moments where the characters are thinking abt each other a lot, plenty of cute moments that could be read as friendly or romantic.

Footage not found

Keeping in mind that this an almost 450-page book, Elora and Kestrel don't meet until right after the halfway point. After that, they have the following interactions:

- A short conversation outside of the castle's library;
- A scene in which Elora comforts Kestrel with some kind words at the gardens;
- A chapter in which Elora and Kestrel practice dancing in an empty ballroom. This is the ONLY part that has them being mildly flirty with each other. NGL, this chapter feels like it belongs in a completely different book;
- During the novel's climax (starting around the 75% mark), there's a moment in which Elora thinks of Kestrel as her princess. Out of nowhere.
- When the book ends, the two of them share a v. passionate kiss before going off into a new adventure.

So, WHERE'S THE ROMANCE? The book spends so long setting up an admittedly complicated world that the romance is almost pushed all way out. Until it brings it back toward the end. By then, it not only feels v. late, but also unearned. It should've been built up way, way back.

I'm NOT saying Elora and Kestrel had to be head over heels with each other at first glance, but there are ways to build up a successful slow burn. And this book was not it. *Hands*

* There's a conflict that might potentially break the couple up.

This bit was SUCH a joke, y'all.

OK, so it turns out that Thom, the man that Kestrel has considered her father since she was a child, is also the man that Elora knows as Darius Graeme. He was the leader of the group that tortured Elora for at least 20 yrs. Elora's freaking out abt seeing him again cuz of how much torture she endured from him, BUT the queen has promised her that she'll have the opportunity to use her death powers on him.

Me: Ohh, this is gonna be messy.

What actually happens is that Elora and Kestrel have one (1) argument, then they apologize the next time they meet. And, before they head off to the Hollows, Elora sneaks Kestrel into the dungeons so Kestrel can talk to her "father". Finally, Darius|Thom apologizes to Elora and she forgives him.

Me: wow, this book has truly 🤡 me, LOLsob.

Trigger/Content Warnings: Mentions of FMC having been tortured in the past (including descriptions of the methods used to kill her); MCs have panic attacks (they're okay); MC has PTSD; MC is abt to get killed by a magical creature (she's saved); Graphic description of a character using her death powers; Graphic descriptions of characters who have supernatural/monstrous physical deformities; a graphic scene featuring animal sacrifice; magical racism; one of the MCs is thrown into a lake so she can drown (she's saved); Two chapters of detailed and graphic descriptions of supernatural flora and fauna attacking people; Dismemberment.

TL;DR: This book totes duped me for the first 40%. Kudos to the author for her storytelling skills. Sadly, my expectations abt the fantasy romance were never met. #WompWomp

Not gonna continue this series--which is a shame. Had it been marketed differently, I'd have probably given it a higher rating. That said, I'm open to read something else from this author.

I borrowed this from KU.

That ENDING??? I'm just gonna get left with that and have to wait??

This was amazing. The amount of times I thought I knew what was gonna happen and then BOOM twist?? Even up through the last few chapters I wasn't sure where we were headed.

The FMCs? Straight baddies. I don't want to spoil but Kestrel is one of my favorite fmcs I've read this year and if you read this you'll know why 😌.

The forbidden romance aspect 🤌🏻🤌🏻. Elora and Kestrel slowly starting to pine for each other made my heart so freaking happy and they both deserve the entire world.

Ahhh, I totally need more. This was really entertaining and keeps you glued to your seat all the way through. Is it predictable…yeah, is it still totally and utterly satisfying though, absolutely.

You honestly can’t help but love these two characters. And the fox, i want to see more of the fox(i have my theories on that one 🤔)

I thoroughly enjoyed this and definitely can’t wait to read more by this author.

Thanks to the author for the ARC, and this is my honest review.

ARC REVIEW:

The world-building was refreshingly different compared to the other fantasy romances that I have read this year. I'm in love with Elora and Micah. Took me a while to warm to Kestrel, but by the end of the book…? Colour me obsessed. Also, the redemption arc of a certain gentleman was soul-food.

The whole book was a whirlwind that hits barely a single chilli-pepper on the spice scale. I would donate a limb to scientific research to get my hands on a paperback indie cover of this series.

Ugh, I could cry. I miss them already. Without spoiling anything the carefully placed "My Princess" absolutely destroyed me.

"She was beauty. She was darkness. She was a Queen of Death".

The world building is steeped in secrets, blood, and corrupted magic. The FMCs been confined most of her life. we follow her journey of becoming empowered. bold, haunting fantasy debut. It gives repunzel X  peresone vibes. Yet, sometimes I wished for more clarity in pacing; especially in the politics. Its rare for me, but this read was hard to dig into; yet im a mood reader so possibly revisiting later will give better insight. If you love fierce heroines, morally grey kingdoms, and magic with consequences...this read is for you.

do check the TWs: Captivity/imprisonment - Animal abuse/sacrifice (related to a system of magic) - Torture (past, referred to, not on page) - Uncertain parentage/lineage - Maiming - Deception

Rep: lesbian and bisexual WMCs, sapphic romance

This was one of those rare books that I had trouble putting down. Which, honestly, is rare for me. I don't mess around with sleep, but I was loath to put it down at night. This hooks you into a magic-cursed world and wastes no time throwing its characters into danger, hard choices, and complicated allegiances. I loved that it didn’t rely on a heavy front-loaded info dump; the author trusts readers to find their footing alongside the characters, and it makes the immersion feel natural and immediate.

The dual POV is especially well done. Elora is introduced first, a princess forced into a political marriage with a prince that neither wants in exchange for release from the dungeons. Her fear and exhaustion are immediately compelling. The story then shifts to Kestrel; a Rapunzel-esque runaway raised in extreme isolation aside from her father figure, who begins to realize that the world beyond her tower is far less monstrous than she was taught. I loved the contrast between them. Kestrel is earnest, idealistic, and wholly unprepared for the darkness she walks into. Elora, on the other hand, is calculating and emotionally bruised, and watching her begin to thaw around Kestrel is incredibly satisfying.

The sapphic slow burn between them is handled with nuance and is a slower burn, which I appreciate. There’s a lot of longing, hesitancy, a tiny bit of misunderstanding, and unspoken pain on both sides, which makes their growing bond feel both believable and earned. They’re not just potential lovers, but foils; healing alongside each other in a world that has failed them in very different ways. That theme of isolation and how it warps and wounds people differently was one of the book’s strongest themes.

The world-building is also rich, with cursed ruins, dangerous magic, and courtly games that don’t feel too familiar but still hit the sweet spot for dark fairytale fans. I did feel like the pacing stumbled a little toward the end, with a few plot beats arriving faster than I wanted, especially when earlier chapters gave the characters so much room to breathe. Still, it didn’t take away from my investment and it meant that we had an interesting place to end things until the next book.

If you love emotionally driven fantasy with complex heroines, tragic backstories, court intrigue, and a romance that simmers rather than explodes, this is a must-read. I already need book two. Adored this!

Thank you so much to Hidden Hollow and the author for the complimentary copy and swag! This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

Thank you to the author Jessaca Willis for the digital ARC, it hasn’t affected my review.

TW: imprisonment, animal abuse and death, references to torture, death and violence

Release date: 7th July 2025

For most of her life, Kestrel Grame has been locked in a tower by her guardian, convinced through stories that the world outside is a mess of cursed magic and monsters. When Thom fails to return home, Kestrel escapes and goes to find him- only to discover her entire life has been a lie. Thrown into a world of royalty and power she could never have imagined, Kestrel comes to realise that the real monsters are the royal family. Taken hostage and delivered to Irongate to serve them, Kestrel must fight to save Thom’s life by learning her powers before she’s used as a weapon by the monarchy. Within Irongate’s walls, Princess Elora has spent years in chains before her release into the control of the royal family. Killed in battle and resurrected centuries later, she started her second life with the promise of a throne- but only if she can control Kestrel and lead her into conquering her powers. Elora wants her freedom and Kestrel wants to return to the life she had before, but the world won’t let them have it easily.

I knew I would love this book when I first read the pitch: a sapphic combination of Rapunzel and Persephone in a world haunted by curses and secrets. I connected immediately to Kestrel, even though she’s deeply naive in the beginning due to her upbringing, but my favourite was definitely Elora. Elora is so damaged and hurt by what’s been done to her but she never gives in and she absolutely deserves the world. This book never slows down, something is always happening and the reader is sucked into the world from the very first page. I really liked how both characters are forced to reckon with the world around them, no one can be fully trusted and those they think are friends aren’t really. I wish Kestrel and Elora had met before the midpoint of the book because I really wanted more scenes with the two of them together. I have to mention the fox that follows Kestrel around- they were a lovely humorous addition to a dark and romantic fantasy story.

Oh my heart! Kestrel was sooooo innocent in the book. Her first kiss was a comedy in itself, but she grows, and grows on you and she's giving me this knight girl and I so love it! I can definitely see her mother in her, and is such a joy to follow this story. Princess Elora is cold and keeps to herself, but you get to understand why, and why her trust is so low but she also grows and I think she's perfect for Kestrel and I am dying to know what's up next with these two!

Is dark and very scary and as usual it makes you feel like everything is real, and the creativity behind it blew me away. As usual the author brings these worlds to life and they feel so immersive.

I enjoyed the story so much. It was full of adventure, innocence and breaking out of that innocence once finding secrets and lies, and I could feel the growth of the characters and how they changed throughout the story. The pace was also good and didn't felt bored at all. It made me giggle and fall in love with each once of the voices in the story and I am so excited for the next story.

⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜
There is no spice in the story just some kisses. TWs I'd say mention of abuse, abuse, strange creatures that are up to no good, however, nothing that happened in the story triggered me.

Thanks so much to the author for sending me a copy for review. All thoughts are my own.

This was such a brilliant book! I was hooked from the very start and I couldn’t put it down!

I’ve read so much fantasy lately with sassy, cocky FMC’s that I’ve grown tired of it. So imagine my relief when I’m met with two FMC’s who are NOT that. And gosh, how I loved them.

I just wanted to wrap Elora up in my arms and protect her. She’s been through so much, forced into obedience from a lifetime of torture. She’s isolated and alone with no one to trust, shackled even when she’s given freedoms.

Kestrel was fantastic. So naive and sheltered, but so excited by life. I loved how realistic her introduction to the world felt, a combination of awe and fear until anxiety took over because of course someone who’s only known one other person their entire life is going to be completely overwhelmed by a whole town. She’s so pure and sweet and kind and wonderful and I adore her.

I really enjoyed the slow burn between these two, the way they’re so drawn to each other but it’s hard for them to trust. I loved the way Kestrel broke down Elora’s walls, pushed her way into her heart.

The fantasy world built here is both terrifying and exciting and really well thought out.

I absolutely can not wait for book two!

"A Crown of Deceit & Ruin" by Jessaca Willis is a riveting and emotionally charged fantasy novel that skillfully combines traditional fairy tale tropes and imagery with a dark, queer, and contemporary sensibility. The novel focuses on two young women, Kestrel and Elora, who are both captives in their own right. Kestrel, who is Rapunzel-like, has been confined to a tower for her lifetime only to find the world beyond more dangerous than the stories she heard. Princess Elora, who is cursed to be a revenant, is caught up in a greater game of courtly politics and political manipulation.

The author masterfully creates a world steeped in dark magic and ancient curses, where the greatest monsters are commonly those who sit on thrones. The slow-burning, enemies-to-lovers romance between Elora and Kestrel is the heart of the book, with tension that is palpable and longing that is true. Their path is one of taking back power, shattering cycles of destruction, and holding onto hope within a bleak life. With its morally ambiguous characters, robust worldbuilding, and fulfilling emotional resonance, "A Crown of Deceit & Ruin" is an absolute must-read for lovers of dark fantasy and sapphic romance.

I read over half of this book in one day. My kindle was actually about to shut off because the battery was so low, and I found an extension cord to plug it into so I could finish reading the last couple chapters.

I don't think I can accurately describe just how much I loved this book. Kestrel is such a strong character, leaving her tower for the dangers surrounding her in order to search for her father and discovering the outside world in the process. She's strong, opinionated, and fearless, and I love her so much. The Rapunzel call-backs were done really well, but she's still 100% her own character.

Elora also is strong, having survived torture and imprisonment for who knows how long. I would love some more backstory on the Ashen, and really this world in general. There's so much depth and so much history to go through.

I found out about the prequel after I started this, and it’s now at the top of my TBR. I'm so excited for more books in this series and I can't wait for the next one.

✨ 4.5 stars ✨ A hauntingly beautiful sapphic fantasy that gripped me from the first page. ✨

A Crown of Deceit & Ruin delivers everything I crave in a dark fairy tale retelling: forbidden power, aching slow-burn romance, and the kind of twisted magic that sinks into your bones.

Kestrel, our Rapunzel-esque heroine, starts the story as a girl locked away in a tower, but she’s so much more than a damsel. Her journey into a cursed world is raw, messy, and magnetic. And Elora?? The dethroned, resurrected princess with ice in her veins and vengeance in her heart? Yeah, obsessed. Their dynamic is everything—gritty enemies-to-lovers tension, trust issues, bi/sapphic pining that hurts, and just enough softness under all the angst to make your heart ache.

I also loved the layered worldbuilding: dark kingdoms, political schemes, ancient curses, and that undercurrent of horror that keeps you on edge. There’s something sinister always lurking, and I was hooked. Side characters like Micah and Thom had surprising depth and definitely made me desperate to know what’s coming in Book 2. (Seriously. I need it yesterday.)

It’s a slow burn, but the payoff is worth it. If you love stories about girls who rise from ruin, cursed magic, morally grey royals, and found family, this is your next obsession.

“You have been a star in my night sky. A beacon of hope in an otherwise grim existence—I would follow you to the depths of the Maw and back if you asked me.”

Guys I honestly loved this so much!! I have so many thoughts and theories and I can’t wait for the next book to find out if I’m right, but for now I will sit and soak in the beauty that was this book.

I am so love with the dynamic that is Elora and Kestrel and to see them grow and change together was so beautiful. To see the trust be built brick-by-brick, each conversation and interaction changing and molding them, omit was pure perfection!

I've waiting 3 years for this book and it was worth the wait. I love Kestrel and Elora, the secondary characters, and the world building.
Kestrel is energetic and curious, and her innocence is a stark contrast to the curruption in the world outside her tower.
Then we have Elora. Where Kestrel is an open book, Elora is reserved and wary of the intentions of others.
Experiencing Grimtol through both their eyes paints a complex and diverse world. I'm excited to see more of Grimtol as Elora and Kestrel continue on their journey.

**ARC review**

good lord, this book was fantastic!

this was a sapphic rapunzel-inspired fantasy where a trapped young girl leaves her tower only to end up in the kingdom and castle of irongate, navigating royalty, history, and betrayal. not to mention, an unsteady friendship with elora, betrothed to the royal family’s oldest son.

i have not read anything like this, and i was enchanted. the descriptions, the characters, the dialogues were amazing. i absolutely adored micah (and the fox, of course), and can’t wait to see more.

I am a SUCKER for slow burn and this book hits it at the perfect spot. The tension, the plot, the characters were all so perfectly written into one nice little package. If you pick this book up, be warned you’re not going to want to put it down until it’s finished. Kestrel and Elora were beautifully written. They are two characters you just instantly fall inlove with and root for till the end. The court dynamics, the loyalties, betrayals, friendship, secrets, love…..everything keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Her side characters also were just the cherry on top of it all. This book was a wild ride and I need book two already.

At some point I wanted to stop and read the prequel but then I realised it wasn't sapphic. Well, I don't think I missed much because I could still follow the storyline here.
