It's been ages since i read anything MM except for danmei and manga, but when i saw this book in my feed i dropped everything, and started reading it. I love Wonderland, love the first tim burton's alice movie, read quite a few retellings and fanfics related to this universe, some better, some worse, and always looked for a MM version of retelling with tim burton's vibe. So this one seemed to be a perfect match at first. And then... i got disappointed.
I cannot even explain what was wrong with it. The plot was predictable but i like predictable: it makes me feel comfortable and safe. The characters were ok, i guess. But the writing style... it was like the story was written for children - amature, simple and plain, maybe? (Except for all the sex, ofc. We don't want that stuff in children's books.) Idk, it is difficult to express clearly, i can say only one thing - the same plot could be made into something, if not awesome, but still worth reading, but this specific attempt failed. And i actually gave it 2 stars on goodreads bcz i am a kind and generous person.😊
Okay, so this is a really fun gender bender Alice in Wonderland reimagining. Alec follows a man, who turns into a white rabbit, into a forest and falls down a hole. When he meets with the Rabbit and the Hatter, he learns it was his destiny since he was a child to save Wonderland from the Queen of Hearts, a vicious queen who wields dark magic. Throughout his journey, he falls in love with someone he shouldn’t have. Bax, the Knave of Hearts.
The writing in this book is really good. I did get annoyed by the characters, but that happens when they behave irrationally. Overall, I think this was a creative retelling of the beloved classic, and would say it’s worth a read.
A surprisingly faithful retelling, all things considered. I personally prefer the more creative solutions, where you often even forget it's a retelling of a classic. Sumida added some interesting details and the solution to the whole war thing was... Like can I say it was nice but I saw it coming from a mile away and that made it less exciting? I have had varied experiences with her books so this one is somewhere in the middle - nothing to get worked up about, nothing to write home about. A nice story and I am definitely interested in more, but it could have been better.
I am not a big fan of Alice in Wonderland. That being said I did like this version. It seemed more an adaptation of the live action Disney than the original story. I do think the story should have ended a chapter sooner. The last chapter seemed unnecessary. Overall, a really good story.
