Emperor's Assassin #2

Emperor's Wrath

Rate this book
In this den of vipers and vultures, can I trust the emperor I was sent to kill or is he using me to destroy all I love?

I abandoned my destiny in favor of a new goal: working with Emperor Tallu to take down the Southern Imperium. Only things are not so easy when we’re faced with the imperial generals who brought the continent to its knees.

If my mother knew what I was doing, her rage would melt the Silver City, but I have no choice as Tallu and I pursue a powerful weapon that could end any opposition to the Imperium.

Why does it matter if I’m finding myself all too attracted to a husband I can’t trust, whose secrets multiply the closer he lets me get?

I didn't think it was possible, but this second book in the series was even better than the first. While I adored the initial installment for its engaging storyline and character development, this sequel took everything to the next level with an abundance of action, romance, and expertly crafted pacing. There wasn't a single moment when I felt bored or lost interest; the narrative was a relentless thrill ride. Each plot twist seemed to come out of nowhere, keeping me on the edge of my seat. At this point, I genuinely have no idea whether the ending will be triumphant or tragic, which only heightens my excitement for the impending release of the third book.

The world-building the author has created is nothing short of immersive. I found myself completely drawn into the vividly imagined landscapes, rich with detail and filled with the nuances of a well-developed universe. Throughout the story, I cried, laughed, and felt a wave of anxiety over the fates of Airón and Tallu. Their romance is nothing short of extraordinary. The chemistry between them is palpable; it literally sizzles on the page! The way their relationship unfolded felt like a slow burn—intense and simmering, even when it moved swiftly; it was impressive how the author captured the gradual depth of their connection. Their love story embodies the kind of devotion described in ancient prophecies—the type of love that makes you feel alive, propelling you to forge ahead through life's challenges.

However, as much as I cherished their romance, I did find Airón a bit annoying towards the end with how excessively he waxed poetic about his undying love for Tallu. At times, his musings felt a bit over-the-top and perhaps could have been toned down to allow other elements of the story to shine.

In conclusion, everything about this book not only met my expectations but exceeded them in delightful ways. I am on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the third book!

Weak 3 stars.

This sequel picks up right where Betrothed to the Emperor ended. Tallu and Airon decided to work together to find whoever is building the flying ship, and destroy the ships before they are used to conquer the North, or other nations that would be otherwise inaccessible.

I do enjoy politics and scheming in books, but in this one, it felt hectic. There is spying and double-crossing. Tallu and Airon need to find out who is trying to kill them, as well as the identity of the person building the flying ship, all while maneuvering the daily expectations of court life. At one point, I just got confused with all the names of the generals (how many are there?!) and their connections to each other in the flying ships scheme, and other secrets they kept from the Emperor. What I understand is that none of them (or almost none of them) is trustworthy.

The dragon subplot, while interesting, was too easy. Everything fell perfectly into place, any obstacle was quickly and easily resolved, and the dragon is content to hide in a room and heal people whenever Airon asks him nicely. There is so much potential with a dragon and its magic, but the way it was woven into the story was underwhelming.

The ideas are good, but there are too many of them. At times, it felt like the author just threw in every idea they had for this series, and it rendered the plot muddled at times, while other subplots were not as developed as they should have been to be truly relevant to the book. I think fewer, better-developed ideas would have been better here.

“I’m a trained imperial assassin; I know how to make poisons, I know how to wield every kind of weapon, I know how to kill you with a dinner spoon. I can make a bomb.”

Airon keeps saying how well-trained and badass he is, but it doesn’t feel like it. Sure, he is a good fighter, but he does not have the “assassin vibe”, and half of the time, he seemed to be taken by surprise by the events and was underprepared to face whatever threat jumped in his path. This is a case of telling and not showing: we are told repeatedly that Airon is a trained assassin, but we do not see it, except when he fights other soldiers.

The relationship between Tallu and Airon got stronger and better. Amidst everything that was happening, they still found the time to talk and open up, and learn to trust each other. They work well as a team, and I like that there were still some tender and quieter moments between them. That being said, I still feel that their relationship remains a little shallow. They have good chemistry, but the emotional connection could have been deeper by the end of this book.

4,25 stars, a good sequel to Betrothed to the Emperor, didn't expect any less from Mrs. Butler.

On the + side :

- The political plot is the strongest point: all the machinations, plans and counterattacks from Airon, Tallu and their enemies is cleverly woven with action, magic, covert information exchanges and shifting alliances with court characters who may be friend or foe depending on the time. That kept me hooked, which is a great thing since it covers about 80% of the plot, and it’s handled super well.

- I was surprised (in a good way) how the focus among secondary characters shifted. I was thinking about Piivu and Velethuil who kinda fade into the background, while new faces take the spotlight, particularly Hipati (who I LOVE so much), Lerolian and Dalimu is also an intriguing addition, and I’m looking forward to seeing where that goes.

- On a spoiler tangent,

On the - side:

- The dragon plot was waaay too easy. It’s basically perfect, and the dragon himself is the perfect being, a presence always well hidden despite all the coming and going of servants (okay, he’s in a room not that easily accessible but the guy is freezing the entire place from its very existence, the temperature must have dropped a LOT around).
Also, he’s supposed to be the last of its kind, starting as an egg then a baby dragon and he appears quite content to be parked in a room, healing people whenever needed, growing steadily, acting like a symbol of hope at exactly the right moments, perfect personality and behavior.
And then, his connection with Airon is SO underdeveloped! He’s basically a super convenient pet and there isn’t much emotional connection between them, unlike the bond Airon developed with Terror. Why would he be that attached to the MCs? Probably because of the prophecy or because it has to be so since Airon is a MC but well.

- Airon’s hot-and-cold feelings toward Tallu sere SO frustrating to me. I kept wanting to shake him and say “come on dude, just make up your mind already!". I mean Tallu was, and has always been so clear, open and fully in from the start, which he told and shown repetitively to Airon, so I get where the lack of trust come from but at some point, it felt repetitive and there wasn’t really a decisive ah-ha moment that made him think otherwise, he just kinda chose one side over another and that was it.

- Towards the end, the plot development could have benefited from a slower pace in places. Everything is packed into just a few chapters with multiple major twists and events happening at once on various fronts, and it felt like some characters were sidelined and other important moments unfolded off-page while our MCs were busy elsewhere. That’s realistic in a way, cause we read Airon and Tallu’s pov so they can’t be on every frontline but I still missed their perspective or presence .

- On another spoiler tangent,

I’m curious to see how Mrs. Butler will handle that in the final book!

4.75 almost perfect stars

“What makes you think I can help you?” I circled close to him, drawn to the map and the way he looked at it as though seeing something else entirely.
Tallu reached down. He stroked his palm from my shoulder to my hand. Gently, he drew my knuckles to his lips, pressing a tender kiss to them. “Because you are an assassin, and I need someone dead.”

again, this was not exactly what i was expecting, which isn't bad; and not as sensous as i was hoping, which is a little bit bad.

this world is very exciting tho, and this second book was very exciting and i Cannot Wait to read how things are going to progress, because , but now i have to wait for the next book to come out!!!!!!

Oooh, the plot is thickening.

So Tallu and Airón might have feelings for each other, after all. Things are heating up, and they have to figure out who they can trust in a court full of vipers.

It is a bit fast-paced. This could be an incredible series, with a bit of editing and adding some more scenes. I feel like it should be a far bigger book, at least 200 more pages, adding some more fluff scenes, some more intrigue and background information. I do think Airón sometimes rushes into things, and it should be more paced out. Just a thought to consider, I think the author should go back through each book and add some more things and more depth, and it would be incredible.

It does kind of feel like an early stage draft rather than a finished product. However, I am becoming quite a fan of this work, and I'm glad the next book will be out in about a month, as I don't know if I can wait longer to know what happens next and who the Shadow King is.

There is a tiny more amount of spiciness in this one, not quite "fades to black" but not much more than that. I'd give it maybe 1.5 at most in the spiciness scale. I'm not mad, I might like it, but sometimes it's nice to focus on other things.

A sequel filled with political intrigue and machinations, surprise reveals, and tension — but also very well written emotionally-charged moments, and not just romantic ones.

In the usual style of indie romantic fantasy, the story gets going right away exactly where it left off in the first book; and there is no summary of any kind, so if it’s been a while since you’ve read the first, I recommend a reread because you will need to have names and circumstances in mind to be able to follow and fully enjoy this book! But it’s really worthy it IMO.
The audiobooks are also well done so that’s also an option I recommend.

The narrative pace is faster here, especially in the second half of the book; that’s another reason it’s good to have a good handle on where the story left off before starting this one.

I’d love to move on to the third book immediately but the fourth will be released in March so I have promised myself I’d hold off until February so it’s a a bit fresher in my mind by the time book 4 is released.

I found this series by accident and had never heard of it, so I am kind of floored by how good I’m finding it! Interesting world building, good characterization, very intriguing magic systems, and just somehow more compelling than the familiar tropes might make you think.

I quite recommend it to readers who enjoyed A Strange And Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows, A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alex Rowland, or Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell.

This is the second book in a gay fantasy series, resuming the tale of Prince Airon, raised as an assassin, and his husband, Emperor Tallu. I enjoyed this quite a bit, although less than book one. While I remain drawn to both main characters, I'm not very engaged by the larger plot ... at least the part with other people. [The animals/birds are a good hook for me.]

Let's call it three and a half out of five imperial stars, rounded up for the elephants, ravens, and dragon.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

And the plot thickens

These poor men. They solve one problem and suddenly 3000 more appear out of nowhere.
Book two dives into the politics and intrigue of a kingdom that needs to be destroyed, and no one can do it better than the emperor and his assassin husband.

They both have an established relationship here, so now the focus of the story shifts to dismantling the plans of 5 generals who believe they can rule better than the actual emperor. There’s still some romance, though. The L word even.

This series has been a pretty solid romantasy. Nothing to envy from the mainstream books everyone keeps recommending on social media. I’d even say it’s better than a lot of what’s been published recently. People just need to give MM romantasy a chance ☺️

The pacing threw me off a little, because some parts dragged. But overall it was a fun and interesting read.
I love the magic system here, very creative.

4.5 Stars ⭐️

We are continuing with the story now that Airon and Emperor Tallu have gotten married. Tallu is slowly letting Airon in, little by little sharing more information about what is actually going on in the Imperium.

This is one of those series that is only getting better. This book was better than the first book (and the next book is even better, but I digress). I have fallen in love with both of the MC's. Both Tallu and Airon are adorable and even cuter with each other. The story is unique and interesting and the pacing is just right. The tension level stays constant and then builds until you are completely invested in what is going on.

I listened to this on audio and as usual, Michael Ferraiuolo did an amazing job with the narration. This series has a little of everything - magic, drama, action...and dragons! I am definitely hooked.

I was not disappointed this time, granted the writing is still not the best and the declaration of love made me roll my eyes a bit BUT this book continued with amazing world building and the plot actually started to take on an interesting shape with all the twists and turns. I was satisfied enough to actually add another star when I first thought it would stay at 3 like I gave the first book. I especially enjoyed that there was actually some real consequence and loss that felt heavy enough to not simply be brushed off. I'm actually looking forward to the last book now.

"Even now I wanted him, the strong man who had chosen peace. The boy who had been faced with horror and chosen to tear the world down rather than turn into his father."

I really love this series. The world Butler creates is fascinating and the characters intriguing. October is too long to wait for the final book but I’ve already preordered it.

It was certainly better than the 1st book. I was more interested in the political aspects this time. I think the puzzle is there, it’s just that the author makes 100 pieces when half of that would suffice. Still too repetitive, although less than the previous one.

Airón & Tallu are slowly progressing, and I like them together, but the focus is definitely not on their relationship, which is a shame. And the only part I completely enjoyed in the 1st book, that is Tallu, turned out to be a softie 😒. I liked learning about but I missed his “it’s not Your Highness, it’s Your Imperial Majesty” persona. You promise a cold emperor, I expect someone giving orders with an impassive face and a tone that says “you either obey or submit, your choice”. Especially with that book's title. But here I couldn’t feel the terror all the characters were supposedly experiencing in his presence, like in the previous installment.

I still liked this book better. For some reason, I couldn’t put it down. Every free moment I had, I needed to keep reading, despite my feelings of “please let something happen already!”. More like a 2.5★ for me. Entertaining but...

This was a very enjoyable second book in the series! The political intrigue stayed strong but we got some more intimacy and relationship building. It’s so funny to me that I see comments complaining about Airón saying he is supposed to be such a great assassin and “never does anything” or “needs to be saved all the time” but I couldn’t disagree more. I really enjoying a character who can bite to match his bark. Airón lives up to his reputation thoroughly to me. Those are some of my favorite moments of the series when he fights people or counters a sudden attack. If anything Tallu is the one who bothers me a bit. He is supposed to be incredibly political minded and a terrifying emperor with a serious reputation but he seems to fail to keep his cool and exposes them way more than Airón. Like, Airón will obviously be in the middle of a great politically minded plan and Tallu comes in all jealous like a bull in a china shop and puts them into a bad situation. Overall though I enjoyed the story and the progress we made in this story. I look forward to book 3 to see where the story goes next.

It's so nice when a series manages to take what it did in the first book and actually improve upon the formula rather than having an awkward second book that makes you wonder why a series was needed in the first place.

Emperor's Wrath does such a good job of continuing the story laid out in the first book. It's clear that the first book was meant as a set up for the world while letting us feel out our main characters. Much of the plot is really expanded in this one, with a lot more action and tension to be found than in the first. There was never a moment that made me annoyed or bored. Every moment felt worth the effort it took to read it. I hoped for an ending that would leave me satisfied while also have me wanting to read more and see how the remaining problems can be solved, and that's exactly what I got out of this.

Finally, I love Airón . I love Tallu. And I want nothing but good things for both of them, forever and ever. The chemistry they exhibit is so so good and is the sort I wished more romances of this ilk managed to pull off. I truly cannot wait for what the next book has in store, and I hope it keeps up this momentum.

This one's taken me a long time to finish, and I have no regrets. Others have noted some plotting flaws, some of which I agree with, but I enjoyed it anyway. I will give the third book a try when it's released.

The editing in this novel was reasonably consistently good, up until the last ...12% or so. So many authors & editors neglect this part of their work. I get it; usually I read endings quickly. But when I can read slowly, the neglect is more obvious and annoying.

I ever so slightly preferred the first instalment of this series. This was definitely more political and had a lot more plots and players. I don’t think it helped that it took me so long to read because of work. But it was a good follow up to the first book which I adored so much. I actually find the MC to be an enjoyable and well written character and the romance between him and the ML is believable.
