“I hate you. I love you.”
“I hate that I love you. I’m sorry that I love you.”

Upgraded to 5 stars

If I had to choose just one word for this bleak, bloody, dark book, it would be ouroboros.

I have been complaining recently while reading dark books that they simply weren't dark enough, or realistic enough, and didn't drag out the agony long enough to make the crushing changes in behavior realistic and believable.

Well, here we are. 501 pages of fucking bleak agony. You'll feel repulsed, angry, resentful, bitter, and I don't think hopeful is on that list.

This is not an MMM book for anyone looking for fully equal pie slices. This is not a tale of three men falling in love together simultaneously.

This is a story of suffering, more suffering, sacrificing, monstrous behavior, martyrdom, pain, torture, blood, and so many abusive mistakes.

It's interesting that the most poignant thought is at the absolute end of the book:

All love is an opportunity for grief.

I think I'll come back to this and write a full review after I've had a chance to let it settle.

I'm torn between a 4-star rating and rounding up to a 5-star rating, it isn't perfect but it was exactly what I wanted. Despair, loneliness, pain and suffering, and yes, a fucked up ouroboros theme.

If you’re looking for a dark, gothic, 19th century vampire story to get your fix following Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, look no further. Sacrament is a M/M/M dark romance taking place in late 1800s Paris, with similar themes of trauma, grief, and abuse. The story follows Sebestyen, a surly, deeply traumatized and spiteful vampire, Maël, his recently acquired, naive human familiar, and Maël’s spitfire of best friend, Alain.

If you’ve seen me say I’m not a dark romance reader—listen, I’ve made an amendment and vampires are my exception. I absolutely recommend checking the content warning list in the beginning (and on Dante’s site!), as there are harrowing themes explored, some of which are present from the beginning and did make it hard for me personally to read.

That said, I’m so glad I stuck it out and completed the story—Dante explores abuse, trauma, and loss of humanity through the lens of vampirism with such care and nuance. I thought that the character development and growth were excellent. Certain acts are not forgiven by some characters, as they shouldn’t be (vague, I know), but the open, frank conversations had and inner monologues while processing trauma inflicted by a loved one were so refreshing to read. I became very attached to sweet Maël, and Dante managed to have me come around (begrudgingly) on Sebestyen.

In a sea of romanticized vampire stories, I appreciated a tale that explored the misery and monotony of immortality, especially when in subservience to ancient vampire masters, and the historical context given to that power dynamic via the Habsburg invasion of Transylvania. And yet, despite such a horrific existence, the moments of sweetness, hope, of daring to dream of change and breaking the cycle of abuse that were interwoven were truly heart-wrenching. I will absolutely be reading the rest of Morgan’s work—their words are both poetic and cut right to the bone.

Sacrament is available Valentine’s Day. Thank you to Morgan Dante for the eARC ❤️‍🔥

Not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach, SACRAMENT explores cycles of violence and the liminal space between humanity and monstrosity. Dante crafts an erotic and unflinching feast of decadent prose and haunting imagery, perfect for readers of bleak fantasy and dark romance.

That was, wow.
An experience for sure, and one I enjoyed immensely
I do, however, take issue with how Mael was sidelined in part 2, and I don't like how it ends with Seb just accepting that everyone he loves will die, but I like that he has pledged himself to being good. No, being better.
I understand why Sebi put distance between himself and Mael, but his absence was felt greatly.
This was pretty well written and incredibly moving, I got heavily invested in these characters, but that's also why Part two has my ire, I needed more Mael towards the end
I enjoyed how the central theme of this was perpetuity, the ouroboros, and how our heroes managed to overcome their fatalism and best it.

I received an arc from in exchange for an honest review.
*4.75 stars, rounded up*
This was one hell of a read. Let me just start by saying that you should please go through the tw before you decide to read it. It was quite intense. Sacrament draws you in with its dark and elegant prose, traps you with its charming (non) human characters then drives a stake into your heart with its well-crafted plot. What I especially loved was the exploration of the power dynamics between vampire and thrall and the examination of how one can be both be harmed and perpetuate harm. The author really put a lot of work and heart into this and it shows. If you're gonna choose your next queer gothic read, it has to be this one.

I would like to start this review with: READ THE TW! I'm not kidding. If you think you can't handle them, don't read this book. It touches some very dark and deep subjects, not for the faint of heart.
This book talks about the cycle of violence and abuse, the SA and dub-con are no joke. Be careful.

Anyway, I LOVED IT! While I was reading, Maël, Alain and Sebestyen were all I could thing about all day. Couldn't put it down. I loved the plot, it's very high stakes, the villains in the story are actually fucking terrifying and I was on the edge of my seat until the end.

Maël and Alain's love were everything to me, soulmate level. They are everything to each other, I love them so much. And Sebestyen and Alain? Kicking my feet, I love them.
But romance was why it lost half a star. I know the characters are in very complex emotional situation, that there are level of abuse to work on, this isn't why. I was just a little disappointed in Sebestyen's POV in his relationship with Maël. I know he cares about him, but I wish it was showed more than told. It felt like the care he had for him was so much less than with his love for Alain. But that is just a small thing that I kept thinking about.

I fucking loved this book <3

i'm not sure if some of this stuff counts as spoilers so proceed as you will.

im so annoyed by this book. the first half was SO GOOD. it really was giving captive prince/docile vibes but with vampires!! that's exactly the shit i eat up!! and then... we get to the second half.

IM SO IRRITATED I CANT EVEN THINK CLEAR. this book did NOT need to be a poly relationship. It felt like the author couldn't figure out how to make the characters connect so they just said "let me put one character in a coma to give the other two a chance to bond." ARE YOU KIDDING ME. how are you going to put the main character in a coma for half the book. I can't stand when books do poly but just show us how the relationships work as pairs.

The whole book focused on the connections between TWO characters, in any combination of the three. The only times that all three characters interacted at the same time were full of animosity. And in what world in a three way relationship are two gonna go off and get freaky while the third is literally on their death bed. i don't understand. smut for the sake of smut in a book with a plot that was more than just smut is so ANNOYING WHY DID THEY DO THAT AHHHHHH.

Also, during part two, there was so much repetition of things that had already happened. I understand the author was trying to show us another character's perspective of the same events, but JESUS. I don't need to be told the scenes TWICE. cutting these down could have shortened the book by 150 pages. And when something new finally happens (arguably the most important plot point), IT WAS RUSHED THROUGH AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WERE AT HAPPILY EVER AFTER?????????????? im so annoyed i wasted so much time reading this book. i dont understand how this book has so many 5 stars. i literally skimmed the last 50-80 pages because i just couldn't deal with it anymore. i loved a different book by this author so i'm really disappointed.

Thank you, first and foremost, @ for the E-ARC of Sacrament - it was an absolute delight to read. Sacrament will be out on this Valentine’s so make sure to pick up your copy for dark and Gothic romance (with vampires🩸)

Before I start be mindful of the TW the author gives before reading the book. They should be taken in consideration as some very heavy topics are quite explicitly portrayed. This review will contain mild spoilers

Morgan Dante’s work has, yet again, enamoured me with their beautifully written prose and rich characters that worm their way into your heart, even if you don’t want them to (looking at you Sebestyen). My only complaint is that I simply want more, as I already miss these character and I just want them to be happy together :’)

Sacrament weaves the complexities of the cycle of abuse, loss of self and the many forms of forgiveness into a sensual and dark romance that still portrays love and hope in its purest form. It took me a moment to get through the beginning of the book as the narrative doesn’t shy away from describing the cruelty that is inflicted on the characters in great detail and once again I advice to me mindful of the TW. Proceed with caution and make sure you are in a safe space while reading.

Maël’s story, of learning how living only for others and sacrificing yourself along the way will do more harm than good, is one hitting close. His character arc can be healing for people that have been in situations where their freedom and agency has been constricted and his growth as a character is one I cherish in the book. Another of the MC’s is Alain and I think we can all count our lucky stars if we have someone like him in our lives one way or another. Alain and Maël are two sides of the same coin, showing the many ways in which people are willing to sacrifice all for those they love. The world would be a little more fierce and a little lighter with an Alain and Maël. At first I could not see how Sebestyen could fit into this narrative of love and self-love. Yet, Dante masterfully showed the humanity in this monster and I’ll be damned that I started to care for this vampire as well. Snark and all. This character, for me, portrays exceptionally well the complexity of the cycle of abuse, how a victim can become the perpetrator and how hard it can be to break the cycle. But his narrative also shows the complexity of abuse and how it is intertwined with love. How a cycle of cruelty and ‘love’ can keep someone confused and stuck in a bond with an abuser. It rarely ever is as simple as to ‘just leave’. It shows how an abuser can forever live in someone heart, and separating from them feels both liberating and like the world caving in at once. Forever changed thereafter. Yet it shows hope where there seems none, ultimately showing their is always a way forward.

The book portrays beautifully the jarring reality of safety after abuse as well. The way true safety and freedom, after having known none ever before or even for a period of time, almost feels just as scary and cruel as the situation before. It does not feel good until one learns how to heal. When one has been defined for so long by cruelty and what has been denied, the feeling to have and be loved feels like an impossibility, yet another thing that can be taken away or be used against you. The heart needs to trust itself again after it has been broken so many times. Time again this is shown in Sacrament along with the question: Should you be defined by what you did to survive? Can you be forgiven if you are willing to be better?

I will let you decide in your answer after reading the book yourself. A quote that has helped a lot: Do not judge yourself for the things you did to survive. It’s made it possible for you to be here and to live and learn.

Another thing I greatly appreciated were the little details about the historical setting and poking fun and our believe that society was far from evolved before the idea of ‘Progress’ that has been prevalent since the Enlightenment. Shocker, humans have always been, well, humans. Was delighted to learn that ice cream has actually been around for centuries.

Quotes that spoke to me:

“Softness, goodness, it can all be stolen away. It would be dangerous for him to get attached to even a little happiness.”

“God. He had hoped wanting to be fucked, reclaiming sex in the small way he can, would help. He would take power back. He would replace his shame for good, and the shadows would starve.”

“That truly is all he is. Not a puppet. A thing, a hole, a void.”

“This is an ugly life. Let them all see. Maybe if his agony is no longer invisible, they will finally understand.”

“though if Maël were to guess, he would only have to assume that there is no greater tragedy than living forever and only finding joy from suffering.”

“He can never have that honor, the privilege of innocence; he cannot remember if he’s ever had it at all.”

“Maël knew his parents loved him, but he had been an inconvenience, and he always carried that guilt and worked more and more to try to bring the sin of his existence, the burden, to a good equilibrium.”

“He tries and tries and tries, and he fails. He becomes a burden and a failure. His soul is rotten.”

“Even their kindness is cruel because he knows it will end.”

“All you can do now is be better every single day after, and you can, even if you whinge and bitch the entire time.”

“They will haunt him forever, but he’s free. Even empty, even broken, he’s free. God, he cries hoarsely.”

“All love is an opportunity for grief.”

There is more but at this point I could copy-paste the whole book.

I received an ARC of this book from the author. Thank you!

Definitely be sure to take a moment to read the content warnings for this book before diving in, there’s a lot of potentially heavy or triggering content!

I gotta say, I was here from the get-go, when I saw that this was an M/M/M dark vampire story. That ticks my boxes. I enjoyed the master/familiar aspect, how it started off pretty toxic but slowly grew just a smidge more respectful, and eventually started to resemble something like love. I liked the friendship/love between Mael and Alain.

It didn’t exactly feel like M/M/M to me, though. I know Alain and Sebestyan were involved, and then Sebestyan took Mael as a familiar, and through all of that, Alain and Mael were close (maybe kind of pining). The very end of the book made it feel more like they would perhaps try to be together, when they traveled.

The first half of the book felt strongest to me. I did appreciate the flashback in part two to Alain meeting Sebestyan, and everything leading up to Mael becoming his familiar, but then the whole saint’s heart plot felt a bit weird to me. I can’t exactly say why, but at that point, I had a bit of a hard time progressing at a good speed.

Regardless of that, I’d definitely recommend checking this book out when it drops on Valentine’s Day. If you enjoy dark queer vampire romances, it would be a great gift to buy yourself.

Thank you to the author for an ARC! All opinions are my own, blah blah.

First and foremost, I obviously enjoyed this book. However, what I truly enjoyed was the EXPERIENCE of reading this book. There's something about the way the atmosphere of it draws you in that is deeply pleasureable, even if what happens in text isn't necessarily. I never found myself particularly squicked out by anything on page, even though there's a lot of brutality, a fair amount of kinky sex with kinks I don't particularly share in--which, if you've ever had to write scenes like that is an extremely difficult point of craft to master.

The main cast are all charming in their own ways, in a way where no one is openly played by the narrative as inherently right or wrong for their decisions. Instead, you as the reader get to decide based on the reactions of the others to those actions, and to themselves as a result. Sebestyen is at turns ridiculously dramatic, genuinely bastardly, and a mournful, tragic figure; it's no surprise that Alain ends up with him, and Mael as well.

I deeply enjoyed my time with this book, and for everything it was, it's a rare thing to see crafted in such a way. It's a Paris Book, in the sense that it delivers on the feeling classic books set there give when they do it well--something that truly stands out when so many try so hard to recreate that feeling and fail.

Obviously liking vampires, sexy stuff and turn-of-the-century literature helps here, and if that's you, give this a shot. But if you're a romantic at heart who wants to go to a very specific place, like the Paris of the Les Miserables with Liam Neeson where everything is foggy and a little bleak but there's a boy in the mist with bright eyes you can't help but follow? Try this out. I assure you there's nothing quite like it.

I can tell the author really wanted to touch on a lot with this novel, the cycle of abuse, power imbalance in relationships, mistreatment of the working class (including sex workers) etc etc. But the exploration of all these topics just felt so shallow, with the “dark” elements being more edgy than provocative. Everything was so repetitive with little actual plot until right before it ends.

By far the most frustrating aspect of this novel was the polyamory, which straight up doesn’t happen beyond brief mentions in the second half. So much of the book is spent with one relationship being highlighted, the tonal shift to another perspective was jarring, essentially abandoning our established MC for the rest of the book.

Before reading this book sure to check your cw to make sure that this book is right for you.
This book hurt so good. Now this is a vampire book. Alain brings Mael to the vampire Sebestyen after he is hurt to save him. Mael agrees to become Sebestyen's human familiar; so Alain will not have to.
Sebestyen and Mael embark on a complex relationship filled with some real moments, manipulation, and trauma. Mael is an innocent in this world and is no match for Sebestyen. Sebestyen's twin masters are evil af and have many years to twist him all up. He is a product of his environment and doesn't understand the consequences of his behavior until it's too late.
In my opinion, neither does Alain. The consequences of both their selfish behavior were the catalyst to the downfall of Mael's sanity. Neither are innocent in this. Alain and Sebestyen relationship had so many layers. When you added Mael to it, the complexity was perfect and agonizing. When these characters suffered, they suffered. Every emotion was felt on a cellular level, and I was here for it.

(3.5) part 1 of this book is great. devastating, intriguing, disgusting, captivating. definitely starts to drag once part 2 hits and I didn’t really enjoy the POV swap. I almost wish this had been turned into two books because everything just felt so rushed once they decided to go to kill the masters 😭 plus I was insanely disappointed that maël was basically unconscious the last half of the book wtf

now THIS is what a love triangle looks like! where everyone is just completely in LOVE with EACH OTHER. I loved the dynamic with these three, and their individual dynamics as couples, too. Celine is also definitely a favorite, and I loved how sweet her and Mael were to each other. I have a new favorite, and I will talk about this book forever

This book was intense in the best kind of way.

I requested this eARC quite a while ago, so when I started it I went in quite blind. And damn did it blow me away. Very much positively, but it also made me struggle. When I requested this my mental health was in quite a good place and all the triggers were fine, but now 2 months later that changed. I had to take mental health breaks reading it making it 15 days to finish the book which is extremely long for me. But I finished it and it was so worth it.

This book starts with the perspective of Maël. Sweet, innocent and hard working Maël. Gosh that guy I'd give him a hug. His interactions with Sebestyen had so much emotion, postive, negative, abusive, caring it was a mix that made me feel so many strong emotions. It's a push and pull that goes in many directions between these two broken men.
I loved how this was shown in the book until the hight when part two starts.

Part two had a POV switch that made the book feel incredibly different. It was a huge switch from the first part and I needed a moment to get familiar with it. But gosh hearing more sides of this relationship was exactly what was needed to shake things up and keep it interesting, while continuing with the bigger overarching plot and romance.

I also really liked the way vampirism was done in this book, with proper horror elements that were gruesome and bad with that forever kind of sexy allure. It pulled me in real fast at the start and got me hooked after a few chapters.

Concluding this is a good book for anyone loving dark romance with vampires.

Sacrament by Morgan Dante

Rating: 🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

Trope(s)/Element(s):
-M/M/M
-Dark vampire romance
-Gothic/Horror mix
-Vampire master x human familiar + close friend
-Late 1800s Paris
-Vampire biting, blood drinking & debauchery

"𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘦𝘭 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘩𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘦𝘯𝘥."

This story follows Maël, a human man who strikes a deal with Sebestyen, an ascended Astarion-coded vampire lord to become his "familiar." As Maël navigates the violent world of sadistic vampire courts, he's also grappling with his growing feelings for his closest friend and the ever-present threat of torment from other monstrous lords.

This is not your sweet, lovey-dovey M/M/M romance. It’s a brutal, relentless tale of suffering, abuse, torture, the loss of humanity through vampirism, sadistic vampires, revenge, and the desperate struggle to survive and heal. Absolute bleak agony that will leave you disgusted & angry...but craving more? (If you like truly dark vampire tales like me.)

Yes, there’s “love”—but in the truest, most feral vampiric sense. And I devoured every painful, blood-soaked moment of it.

⚠️TW/CW⚠️:
-Exploration of power imbalances
-Coercion, dubious consent & 🍇

Thank you for the ARC, this review is left voluntarily!

This story had the best trio of main characters – what a delight. A lot of Maël’s scenes were so difficult to read and get through but he is also still such a sweetheart to Alain and his sisters despite being put through The Horrors. Seeing his and Sebestyen’s relationship progress through his eyes was so heartwrenching, and it became even more so when we start seeing the story through Sebestyen’s POV too after only getting glimpses into his life and character through Maël’s eyes. It doesn’t excuse many of his actions but it does give context to it and I think that’s what made this a compelling read. I’ve never felt dread like when Maël spoke up in that one scene – you’ll know the one. Alain’s own story is not insignificant either, especially once feelings and backstories started clicking into place. I was so, so curious about the history between him and Sebestyen and it delivered /so well/.

Overall, this is a fantastic story that revolves around the cycle of abuse, revenge, and the desperate drive to survive. These characters are complex, imperfect, and so full of life but I know the themes in here aren't for everyone. Please check the CWs and TWs if needed and take care of yourselves first and foremost.

this isn't exactly a MMM in a way that we'd see the 3 men together, it's actually the relationship between the vampire and a human (Maël) in part 1 and then in part 2 we see the vampire with a second human (Alain) who is Maël's best friend
from the start we know these humans are best friends and adore each other, as the story progresses we learn who the vampire is and why he is the way he is

this is a dark and tragic story with 3 main character that have endured extreme abuse and each reacts to it and was affected by it in different ways

this is a layered and complex romance, the way it's written makes you feel like you're there, feeling the expensive fabrics and textures, clearly visualizing the architecture and decor, feeling the hopelessness and fear these characters experience

I'd love a novella or bonus chapters showing us Maël and Sebestyen truly happy together and as their true selves
I'd love to see Maël and Alain finally bluntly admitting the full extent of their feelings and see Alain enjoying how Maël and Sebestyan get along and live without strings attached, I'd love to see the dynamic of this relationship with the 3 of them free but still navigating what's been done

First of all… this book is a freaking 5/5 stars and a 10/10 read. Highly, highly recommend.

This was my first gothic horror, and wow — what a dark, beautiful surprise. Set in Paris, 1898, Sacrament pulls you into a world of a vampire lord, his familiar, and the familiar’s best friend. The atmosphere is haunting, romantic, and chilling all at once.

The story gives you just the right mix — a touch of spice (not overwhelming, but detailed and perfectly timed), drama, action, and deep emotion. Honestly, these are the kind of hidden gem books I live for — the ones nobody seems to be talking about on BookTok, BookTube, or Bookstagram… but absolutely should be.

One thing that surprised me was how much the story dives into religious themes and discussions about God. I didn’t expect that going in, but it actually added more depth and intensity to the plot.

And yes — the trigger warning list is a grocery list 😅, so definitely check those before reading. But even with a few minor spelling or formatting errors here and there, the writing and worldbuilding are so strong that you barely notice.

✨ Incredible character development. Powerful emotions. Stunning atmosphere.
If you’re craving something dark, gothic, and completely immersive, Sacrament deserves a spot on your shelf.

I don’t think I have words to express my thoughts on this book.

“All love is an opportunity for grief.”

The breaking. And being broken. In increments and fits and starts. The all encompassing bleakness. The never dying hope. Which is smothered and shrouded in darkness but still festering.
Hope as a curse. As a blade in your heart.

Finding courage through love. Finding oneself through eternal suffering. My heart 💔

Morgan Dante is a very talented author. And this book is. Brilliant.

What it’s not is easy and light though. So be prepared. And check TWs.

I think I have a mental block when it comes to longer books. I couldn't muster the energy to read before the 50% mark.
I think the story was good but the first part was rather repetitive.
The second half did read quicker. I see this was supposed to be a MMM book, but I have to say it would be MMM by my standards.

I saw the high rating and thought I would also like this book. I tried to get into it but I just couldn't. One thing I didn't like was the use of present tense. It also reads like it was written in another language then translated into English via AI so I really couldn't get past the first ten chapters

The the Astarion lovers. There were a few parts where I was taken out of the story bc they were using slang or referencing things that I don’t think they would have known during this time period. Other than that, I liked the writing.
My only other issue is that I was expecting more for Maël and Alain’s relationship.

Honestly this book was really heavy and it took me a while to read. I wasn't really interested in the story until 70%. There's a lot of sex scenes and they got repetitive after a while.
Some of the characters took really long to get together too.

I liked the story. The characters were lovely, but I feel like we were lacking an extra chapter.
