War Games

Rate this book
What do you do when the killers come out to play? When it’s hunt or be hunted?

You sharpen your knives and prepare to get bloody because nobody does it better than a woman scorned with something to prove.

Welcome to the 23rd annual serial killer war games, where the adrenaline runs high, the blood is fresh, and the revenge is best served cold.

Descending on the town of Blue Springs, Montana, twenty of the most cunning and skilled killers and assassins will come together for a month-long war, battling it out to claim their place at the top of the food chain, claiming the ultimate victory.

It’s callous, cruel, and brutal. They will be hunted. They will become prey. And when the time comes, they better be ready to fight. Because only one will make it out alive.

It’s a game of endurance. A game of depravity and horror. But what happens when the man who stands between an early grave and victory is the one man who could bring you to your knees?

Will you have the courage to take what’s yours and claim the title you’ve always deserved, or will you falter at the tip of his double-edged blade?

'W𝐀R G𝐀M𝐄S' Is a full length enemies to lovers romance book by author Sheridan Anne. Spoken in 'dual Pov's.'

Once I saw this doing the rounds, and reading over that blurb, and of course throw in the author.. I knew it was my kind of read, and after devouring it cemented the fact yet again why this author became one of my top favourites. I haven’t read all of her books and that’s one I have to rectify, but ones I have, I’ve loved wholeheartedly.

Set in a small town of Montana in Blue Springs twenty (thirteen men & seven woman one being a child) of the most feared assassins/killers will be attending War Games, a game of hunt or be hunted, real life hunger games for serial killers. A month long tournament with a ten million prize pool at stake.
'...𝙸𝚏 𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚗 𝚘𝚗𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚎𝚛 𝚜𝚝𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚜 𝚋𝚢 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚐𝚊𝚖𝚎𝚜' 𝚎𝚗𝚍,

𝙽𝚘𝚝 𝚓𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝚏𝚛𝚘𝚖 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚐𝚊𝚖𝚎𝚜, 𝚋𝚞𝚝 𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚖𝚊𝚗𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚕𝚢.'

At twenty four, Siren is one of the selected ones which has been an ultimate dream of hers forever, she's one of the best contract killers in the world.

At thirty-four Reaper, has been approached six years running to attend the games, each year he's declined..until now..
...𝚁𝚎𝚊𝚙𝚎𝚛's 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚘𝚗𝚎 𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚢 𝚌𝚊𝚕𝚕 𝚠𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚊 𝚐𝚑𝚘𝚜𝚝 𝚗𝚎𝚎𝚍𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚎 𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚖𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚝𝚎𝚍,

𝙸'𝚖 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚎𝚍. 𝙱𝚎𝚢𝚘𝚗𝚍 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚎𝚍.'

What Siren didn't expect to happen was the instant her eyes clapped onto Reaper was to feel any sort of attraction towards him. But in her own words. 🚩...'𝙸'𝚟𝚎 𝚊𝚕𝚠𝚊𝚢𝚜 𝚋𝚎𝚎𝚗 𝚊𝚝𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚌𝚝𝚎𝚍 𝚝𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚛𝚎𝚍𝚍𝚎𝚜𝚝 𝚏𝚕𝚊𝚐𝚜.' But to be fair, it doesn't take long for Reaper to become obsessed with her. ...'𝙸𝚝'𝚜 𝚊 𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚕 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚁𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚘 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝙹𝚞𝚕𝚒𝚎𝚝 𝚝𝚛𝚊𝚐𝚎𝚍𝚢. 𝙹𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝚖𝚢 𝚏𝚞𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚕𝚞𝚌𝚔. This book had everything my dark little heart desired, when your thrown into a room full of top assassins in a league of their own, and one to be claimed the winner, you root for your favourite contender hoping against the shitstorms coming their way that there’s an out for them.

BUT..

Instead of just having one favourite in this, I had three. So I was always on the edge of my seat, praying each of them would come out unscathed.

Triple the anticipation levels, triple the extra beats in my heart..This books put me through the wringer.

I held my breath a time or two
I giggled
I swooned
I died a little bit when a twist had me gasping in disbelief.

This book is unlike anything else this author has written..I loved these characters so much, and I hope we get more. I need more!! Or please even another game like this set up by someone else would be good thanks lol..I don't want this world to end!! GIVE ME MORE!! 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

It was ok. I thought I was going to love it but in fact I just thought it was fine.
I have many issues with the main characters. But I am starting to believe it’s just this author style of writing them because I’ve read I think 3 or 4 books from this author and even though they were not terrible, they were always just fine. And I always have issues with the main characters…… ugh.

First off this book took me by surprise. I did not expect to love it as much as I did but I should have known better. I love everything I’ve read from this author.
The FMC and MMC banter and connection is what I wish another popular booktok serial unalivers book would have been. It was amazing.

They were enemies (not really more respected opponents) to lovers in a way that felt natural. And the twist of a certain character being throw in made my heart melt. The book had me kicking my feet and flipping pages so fast.

This book has a chokehold on me that only a romance reader can relate to and appreciate. Holy freaking amazing...that's what this book is!

My husband asked what I was reading when I was two chapters in...my response was that it was about serial killers and contract killers fighting for the title of War Games winner. His response...I don't get how it's a romance book. Obviously, he hasn't read anything from the great Sheridan Anne or he totally would have understood.

Siren and Reaper's story is packed full of heat, heart, twists, turns, humor and a cast of characters that I can't help but love (well...not all of them). I don't know what to do with myself now...this book has consumed every waking (and sleeping) moment since I started it. But seriously....RUN TO READ THIS!

4.25⭐️, mostly for vibes and an entertaining plot!

i really couldn’t put this book down. would i say this was a literary masterpiece? not even close. but was it the book equivalent to trashy reality tv? yes, and sometimes that’s all you need to hit the spot🤌🏼 it was like Survivor- but they actually kill each other, and it’s in Montana instead of on an island w/ Jeff Probst lol.

our FMC Siren was funny, sassy af, and a total badass. the MMC Reaper was surprisingly emotional and protective while also being totally cut-throat (literally). i also really enjoyed all of the side characters and learning about their individual pasts & motivations. the main premise of War Games leans more towards unbelievability, but i chose to ignore that in favor of letting myself be immersed in the story.

I will admit to being completely gagged by the twist at the end. i literally gasped out loud and then stared at my kindle in shock for a good minute until i clicked to the next page. definitely a pretty satisfying, if not a bit implausible, story! I’d recommend if you need a quick paced palette cleanser & aren’t too invested in top tier writing style or world building. **check TW!!

NOW THIS MY FRIENDS, IS AN UNDERRATED BOOK!!

I know it only came out like a couple of months ago, but this book was such a fun read and needs more hype. Think Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver meets The Hunger Games. It’s literally a competition between a bunch of the best mercenaries & serial killers…what more could I want!😃 Also the spice was amazing and there’s even a bit of primal play for anyone who’s into that…couldn’t be me😏 If you love a dark romance where everyone’s morally grey and thriving, add this to your tbr asap!!

This was so good. I never knew I needed a book about assassins and serial killers competing in War Games. Imagine 20 of the scariest and most efficient killers in one place, fighting it out to be recognized as the best of the best. What could go wrong?

Enter Siren and Reaper, each at the top of their game, ready to take War Games by storm when they meet child assassin ala Black Widow, Shadow.

What ensues is pure genius. It's hot and steamy and oh so delicious. I devoured this novel and need more. Like always, Sheridan Anne doesn't disappoint. Highly recommend.

I loved this book so much!

I wasn’t expecting a certain character but I had a feeling they’d be important as soon as they were mentioned.

There were so many twists I never saw coming.

Banter, chemistry, and a good amount of 💀 (as expected).

I literally couldn't stop reading (at work) I honestly had it figured out I just didn't know how it was going to happen and then BOOM! Phenomenal.

I will forever love anything Sheridan Anne writes. I absoulty loved and ate this book up. Think of this like the hunger games except with serial killer and the public doesn’t watch/gifts ae sent. The way this book bamboozeled me in the end and had me crying a little was crazyyy. I didn’t think this book effect me as much as it did. I love shadow and i thought it was going to be a Rue incident in the Hunger Games, there were a couple close calls, it thank the lord nothing happened to her or you would have seen me bawling my eyes out. I loved Reaper and Siren. It was hilarious seeing everyone around them know they had sexual tension and then when they say something about it, Reaper and siren use look at each other or start arguing. I absolutely love the dysfunctional family and everything they did to protect shadow. I just love all of them so much, I hope Mila gets a book because she’s such a good friend. This book is engraved in my brain.

I always love a good Sheridan Ann read
They always get me out of a slump !
This one is no different

War games is something different to what I’ve read from Sheridan and I’m loving all the variety we are getting!

We have siren and reaper, who in the first couple chapters got me hooked, I didn’t want to put it down !
At the very start I just loved Mila and Sirens relationship, the way they both grew up in shitty situations but found each other, is the kind of friendship I need

I love how Reaper is the most lethal and dangerous but spots siren and he’s a protector
Omg and shadow, when I first read about her, I got scared anything to do with children related to unalivings can very much trigger me, but alas Sheridan doesn’t let me down
I need a bit more of shadows story for sure.

This doesn’t come without the typical Sheridan twists and turns and the thinking you know what’s going to happen but goes a different way! And I love that!

Also thanks for scaring me at the end🤣

5 stars for this masterpiece as always thankyou Sheridan ❤️

AMAZING!!! Epic story by the one and only, the entire book had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, laughing hysterically. But it wasn't without its emotional moments and its steamy moments. It was the adult version Hunger Games but with contestants that took pride in being selected. It was an honor to fight among the best and come out the victor. But what happens when you no longer want to take out your competition?!?! Again, an amazing, wild ride! GO READ IT NOW!!

Are you hoping for a book where a bunch of killers are admitted into a game where they have to off each other in order to win? Well, hold on to your boots friends, because Sheridan’s brand of sultry, shocking, and hilarity is here to make you love contracts killers.

This is one of those books where you laugh, you wonder if you’re sane, and you have a big ol’ WTF after you’ve finished (in a good way, I promise)

War Games is a good time with killers.

🎶 “But I'm in the trees, I'm in the breeze. My footsteps on the ground. You'll see my face in every place. But you can't catch me now” 🎶

For the 23rd annual Serial Killer War Games, twenty of the most cunning and ruthless assassins descend on Blue Springs, Montana for a month of endurance, depravity, and merciless survival.

—*•.¸♡ ★·.·☾ ゚。´THOUGHTS゚☁︎。`·.·★ ♡¸.•*⋆—

“We truly are some kind of dysfunctional family, and I’m finding that I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Reaper and Siren being willing to die for Shadow absolutely got me. They came in just wanting to win, but somewhere along the way they built this little family with her. Now they are overprotective to the point where it feels like Shadow is their kid. The way they’ve shifted from teammates to almost parental figures is so sweet and it adds such a warm layer to all the chaos. 🥹

“I know you may not be ready, but one day, I’d like to call you by your name,” he tells me. “I want to know you for you. Siren is just one portion of the woman you are, but I want to know the woman you are inside. I want to know the woman you’ve hidden away for all of these years.”

Listen, I don’t know when this man decided to get all poetic, but suddenly he is over here pouring his heart out about doing anything to make sure they come out alive with Shadow. The way he and Siren understood each other and worked together so seamlessly was beautiful. He was still the better killer, she was definitely second best, but he would protect her in any scenario. What got me is how much he hated that he was feeling something real for the first time, and then the moment he finally put a name to it - love. The fact that he wanted to call her by her real name, and wanted her to call him Nikolai when the time was right, when they truly knew each other outside of just Siren and Reaper, was everything. It made their connection feel so much deeper than just partners in the fight.

“I’d sooner give up my own life than ever have to face one without you,” I tell him. “You, me, and Shadow.” “Family,” he says.

I do like that they became a found family between Keonna, Nikolai, and Shadow 💗💌❤️🤍. Even though Shadow doesn’t really have a name, I’m pretty sure they end up giving her one, and that bond felt special. But honestly, now that I’m almost done with the book, it all feels a little anticlimactic. Even the deaths didn’t really land for me - they felt flat, and I didn’t connect to any of the characters enough to care. The romance was there, and there were definitely moments where I thought okay, this is interesting. Keonna and Nikolai gravitate toward each other because they’re both contract killers and constantly trying to best one another, so their dynamic had potential. But outside of those sparks, it all ended up feeling kind of dull. I was very underwhelmed with that ending. I don’t even know what to say. I think I came in with high expectations and it just didn’t hit like I thought it would. Reaper and Siren had thirty days to take out the competition and it was supposed to be the best of the best contract killers and serial killers. Instead, most of them came off as dumb and it killed the tension completely. The setup had so much potential, but the execution left me disappointed.

—*•.¸♡ ★·.·☾ ゚。´OVERALL゚☁︎。`·.·★ ♡¸.•*⋆—

The entire book basically turned into everyone protecting Shadow. It stopped being about the competition and shifted into them being willing to sacrifice themselves so she could win, because none of them were going to let a thirteen-year-old be forced to kill them. That part actually made sense for their characters, but it also kind of took the punch out of the setup. And then the ending where Shadow shoots them to fake their deaths so they can go after the organization that raised her - it just felt like the whole story boiled down to being about this one kid. The contract killers and serial killers setup that sounded so intense ended up taking a back seat, and that left me feeling a little let down.

If you enjoyed Lights Out and Butcher and Blackbird, you'll probably enjoy this too - it's right up that alley. It's the Hunger Games, but with serial killers.

It's got all of the gross, gory bloodshed you'd expect, but it's also quite lighthearted and funny at the same time.

The spice - eh - I've read better. I got a little tired of reading "sweet (little) cunt" it's used both in and out of the spicy scenes and it began to gross me out.

The biggest issue I had with this story was the Shadow character and the whole plot surrounding her. Despite the fact that she's basically the Black Widow at age 13, we never really get to see what she's capable of. She's mostly just good at hiding and sneaking around...where's the assassinating bit come in????

And when we get her backstory, we're basically told that she's never experienced human emotions because she's been raised to be a machine. She doesn't even have a real name.

Again - this would be cool, if we hadn't seen her literally risk her life to save Siren's earlier in the story. If we had seen her use her ability to sneak up on the legendary Reaper and (attempt to) kill him, instead of just watch him like a creepy weirdo.

She had countless times throughout the entire book to off several of the people in the war games. But she doesn't take any of them. And the plans she DOES come up with land her in major trouble where she needs to be rescued. We never really get to see her wield a weapon, if I'm honest (the final act notwithstanding) . Biggest wasted opportunity ever.

So, while this story may not have been as intricate or as polished as some others in the same vein, I was entertained by it. It's a pretty solid 3.5 stars for me.

I wouldn't go into this thinking this book is on the same level as Butcher and Blackbird - it's not. It just shares a similar space in the genre. But I think if you manage your expectations, and you're jonesing for another hit of spicy dark romantic comedy, this may just suit your needs.

As always all the stars🌟 and all the hearts🖤for this book! I'm convinced it's impossible to hate a book written by Sheridan Anne at this point!!

War Games will have you hooked from the very beginning and it won't let go of you even after you've finished! This book has everything:

✅Incredible characters that you can't help but love because Sheridan gives them so much dimension and makes them so relatable
✅An amazing plot because who doesn't love to read about serial killers/assassins and all the dark things they do especially when you make them compete against each other
✅The witty banter and phrases that we've all thought in our head
✅The spice that Sheridan always delivers on

Siren is a badass FMC who has seen some messed up stuff in her past, but it made her into the tough yet compassionate contract killer she is. When you have an amazing and dark FMC it means you need an equally dark (probably darker) MMC, so cue Reaper! Who doesn't love a morally black MMC who kills with a moral compass, is built, and doesn't want anyone even being near him but will burn the world down for his woman? Watching the relationship between Siren and Reaper evolve was everything, but the book didn't solely focus on their relationship and abandon the plot altogether like most books will. Sheridan incorporates their relationship and all its difficulties along with the serial killer games flawlessly, so you're never just focused on one aspect and you get everything together. Especially once Shadow enters the picture and they become one killing (kinda dysfunctional I guess) family.

Now reminder this is a DARK romance! Sheridan doesn't skimp on the gory details of what these serial killers/contract killers do in these games and I love the picture she puts together because you feel like you're right there in the middle of it.

I cannot recommend this book enough! READ IT!!!

Sheridan Anne is an instant buy for me. I loved every standalone she has written, and War Games absolutely blew me away. At first, I was skeptical about reading something similar to a popular franchise, especially with the word "Games" in the title. However, War Games is in a league of its own, and I enjoyed every moment.

Sheridan Anne consistently features phenomenally strong FMCs. I fell for Siren immediately and found myself rooting for her throughout the book. Her counterpart, the strong and intimidating Reaper, was an excellent OTT obsessive MMC. As always, the side characters were fantastic and equally memorable.

The combination of action, gore, relationship-building, dark humor, and spice made this book incredible, earning it an easy 5-star rating from me. I devoured this story in just 24 hours and miss the characters already.

With each book I read from this Authors newest book out it is just amazing! This is definitely a story about survival with all the dark energy you love along with amazing characters. A story were some of the most brutal Assassin’s and serial killers will compete to be the last one standing. Things are so insanely awesome in this book and will only become so much more complicated and wild when certain people come in contact with each other and more layers get added to the competition. Sheridan did not disappoint with these characters I couldn’t help but to want more and more of them. This was definitely a book that I could not put down until the very end.

Had a start stop with this due to ARCs but ya’ know me I can pick up and carry on my wayward son 🤣🤣 Especially Sheridan’s work having read a lot by this author.

Ok, onto the nitty gritty. The clue is in the title of this one, the game is afoot with S3rial k!llers and contract k!llers galore well, not quite that many. There are actually 20 invited to these games but only one winner!

Our FMC Siren, is an experienced contract killer and believes she has an exceptional chance at winning, that is until she sees the circle of other contenders, who announce their k!ller names, as one name makes her fearful, the elusive Reaper and another is a child, Shadow 😱 We are taken on a journey through the machinations of contract k!lling, the ups and downs (this will make sense if you read it🤭), the v!olence, the namesake’s techniques, the building of relationships and the end game.

I so enjoyed this one, loved Siren, she made me laugh at times and her being a bada$$ , the storyline held your interest, the interactions between the game players fab, Sheridan really has your heads’ imagination ticking. The part near the end…just 🤯

One of my fave reads this year. This book was a vibe of Hunger Games & the movie Salt. We have enemies to lovers, we have found family & of course, we have some killing!

I also really enjoyed the banter between the FMC & MMC. The whole murder/love fest was awesome 😄. But most of all I loved the humor in this book. Shadow of course was my favorite with her no filter comments 😆.

This book does not get enough hype as far as I have seen. So this is me telling you to go read the book!!! Please & thank you ☺️.
