Dollycas’s Thoughts

In this first Monthly Murder Movie Club Cozy Mystery, we meet club members Rishard, no that isn’t a typo, Roberta, April, Vicki, and Yoly. They meet each month on a Monday at the Northwoods Movie Theater. At a certain point, the movie is paused and the members discuss the suspect, weapon, and motive. After the discussion, each member fills out a card listing whodunit, with what, and why. Then they watch the rest of the movie to see who’s right. The winner gets “bragging rights for the month and a small plastic trophy – which is coveted by all.”

On this particular Monday when they arrive ticket taker and popcorn maker John E. Cash (Junior Cash) is not in his usual spot and there is no popcorn. What they do find is that Junior has gone to the great movie theater in the sky due to a very unnatural cause. But do the Movie Clubbers call the police right away? No, they put up caution tape, take notes, make observations, search the place, argue with each other, take a key piece of evidence, and treat it as their own private mystery until another person arrives and they finally make the call.

Can they solve the murder before the police? Or will the killer bring down the curtains on all of them?

Ms. Blesy has introduced an eclectic cast of characters for this series including a feisty cat named Angela. Each has their own talents and strengths and very different personalities. At first, they seemed to barely tolerate each other but they were a little closer by the end.

I like the idea of a Monthly Murder Movie Club. It sounds like a lot of fun but I didn’t like that they didn’t call the police right away and fudged on the details when they did. Officer Cleary wasn’t happy with their interference. I appreciated that he kept his cool with the clubbers and thanked them while explaining that a murder investigation isn’t like their monthly movie mystery game. I know they will meddle again, this is just the first book in the series, but I need them to at least realize there could be danger. I did enjoy how they all worked together as a team with no one taking a clear lead and that the story was told from all their points of view.

The story is fast-paced and at under 200 pages, it can be easily read in an evening. Ms. Blesy sprinkles humor throughout the story. Each scene is described in detail so it was effortless to envision everything happening.

Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday is a fun cozy mystery that has laid the groundwork for the series to continue with the requisite quirky small-town characters and an interesting mystery. I hope the series continues to fill each day of the week. Murder on a Tuesday is set to be released in a couple of weeks on March 25. It sounds like the movie clubbers will be in the thick of another real-life mystery.

This was such a fun cozy mystery to dive into. I absolutely loved the wide cast of characters and the mystery itself with the murder movie club setting.

I loved the overall premise of this book with a group of people meeting regularly at a movie theater for a murder movie club. They try and figure out who did what in the film playing before the movie ends, and they applied those skills to solve a real life murder they encounter at the theater.

I really enjoyed this first installment in this new series and I can’t wait to get my hands on more. This is definitely worth picking up if you’re a fan of quick cozy mysteries.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.

"Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday (A Monthly Murder Movie Club Cozy Mystery #1)" by Marcy Blesy is a great take on a multipoint of view cozy mystery. Most multipoint of view books can be difficult to transition between characters. I didn't have that problem with this book, that's good. I like to know right away that the point of view has shifted.

That being said, it's for sure a first book and introducing all these main characters. There's all ages, even a baby. We don't get the baby's point of view. It would be hilarious if we did though. We do get some sassy seniors though. Gotta have at least one sassy senior in a good cozy mystery.

The mystery took place primarily at the movie theater the Monthly Murder Movie Mystery Club meets at. Then it jumps to various club member's points of view as they do their bit to contribute to the investigation. It'll be fun to read more of this series.

Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday kicks off a new series from author Marcy Blesy with a quirky ensemble cast and a fun concept. I love the idea of a ‘murder movie’ club, where a group meets monthly at a movie theater to watch a whodunit – which they pause halfway through to discuss and then write down their individual guesses for who and why and how. This particular club is comprised of a very eclectic bunch of people, and one thing I found interesting is that each of the members are anti-heroes in one sense or another. Kind-of like the Desperate Housewives or Cheers (or Frasier) characters, to draw some pop culture parallels. They all have secrets, foibles, or flaws that make some of their decisions and motives questionable at best. And yet, in spite of their individual (and collective) moral ambiguity, they are easily likable and kept me invested in their investigation as well as their group dynamics.

The murder mystery that they find themselves solving in real life starts at the theater as they all arrive for their meeting to find their usual ticket taker and favorite popcorn maker dead at his post. I did find their rather cavalier attitude at finding a body – and of someone they knew, no less – to be somewhat startling, as was their handling of the scene & the evidence and their delay in calling the police. But as I got to know the characters and their eccentricities, and realized that the storytelling style is a bit of a spoof on film noir, it all made much more sense. This is a quick read so there aren’t a ton of suspects but I was nonetheless unsure of whodunit until the big reveal … though I wasn’t surprised to find out who it was, a dichotomy I found intriguing.

Bottom Line: Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday by Marcy Blesy is a fun whodunit with snappy dialogue and lively characters. I loved that we get to see the investigation from each of their perspectives and that they all work together as an ensemble cast to solve the crime, rather than one of them taking the lead. Their eccentricities and flawed layers, combined with the present tense writing, give the book an old ‘noir’ detective feel while staying lighthearted and fast-paced, and I appreciated the refreshing change of pace from the ‘same old, same old’ that the cozy mystery genre can often lend itself toward. I’m curious to see where their sleuthing will take them next, and how the author will develop the characters and the group dynamic as the series continues.

Review:
I just finished reading “Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday” by Marcy Blesy, and I have to say, it was a delightful ride from start to finish. This cozy mystery is packed with fun and humor, and it moved at such a fast pace that I could hardly put it down. Each chapter had me eager to turn the page and see what would happen next.
The members of the Monthly Murder Movie Club are a quirky bunch, and I loved how each character had their own distinct voice and unique quirks. Their strengths and weaknesses played off each other perfectly, creating a dynamic group that was both entertaining and relatable. The snappy dialogue added an extra layer of enjoyment, making the interactions between characters lively and engaging.
The storyline itself was intriguing, filled with the perfect amount of twists, turns, and red herrings. I never knew what was going to happen next, which kept me guessing right up until the very end. The ending was unpredictable yet satisfying, tying everything together perfectly.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was getting to know each character's point of view throughout the murder mystery. It added depth to the story and made the experience all the more immersive. I found myself laughing, gasping, and rooting for the club members as they worked together to solve the crime.
For anyone who adores a cozy mystery with a sense of humor and a star-studded cast of characters, I highly recommend this book. It’s a blockbuster in the world of cozy mysteries! Plus, there's no need for a ticket stub because the next installment, "Murder on a Tuesday," is ready to roll. So, grab your popcorn, and get ready for a cinematic-style whodunit you won’t forget!

Monthly Murder Movie Club meets monthly at The Northwoods Movie Theater, in northern Michigan, to watch a murder mystery movie on the big screen. They pause the movie midway to discuss clues and theories. It’s a fun hobby and a wonderful escape for each of the very different club members.

One Monday, however, club members find the ticket-taking popcorn maker John E. Cash in the lobby of the theater, murdered. As mystery loving folks themselves, they decide to work collectively to solve the crime before the Northwoods Police force can.

What a fun start to a new series! This was fast-paced (only 171 pages) and the perfect escape when I just needed to take a break from all the to-dos on my list. I read this in one setting. It’s a creative storytelling set-up because each character has a chance to tell the story through their point of view. While that might sound confusing with a full cast of characters, it wasn’t at all.

And I think what helped the storytelling so much was that each member of the murder movie club was so unique and quirky! Usually readers are being led through a mystery by one sleuth, and here we can experience multiple points of view. I loved it.

I could easily picture the Northwoods Movie Theater, and I would love to see more of Northwoods itself in future books.

If you enjoy themes of friendship and my favorite, found family, in your cozy mysteries, grab this right away on your ereader. It’s a great introduction to what is sure to be a delightful series. And what’s even better, readers don’t have to wait long for book two: Murder on a Tuesday, which releases March 24, 2025

Happy reading and sleuthing!

Murder Movie Club (Murder on a Monday)" is the first book in the Monthly Murder Movie Club Cozy Mystery series. Having enjoyed another series by this author, I decided to give her new series a try, and I'm really glad I did

The Movie Murder Club is a group of enthusiasts who gather monthly at the Northwoods Movie Theater to watch a murder mystery. They pause the movie halfway through to discuss the plot and each member attempts to solve the mystery. Afterward, they watch the rest of the film to see who guessed correctly. However, this month takes an unexpected turn when a real murder occurs at the theater. The concept of a group of movie buffs solving actual crimes brings a refreshing twist to the genre. The characters are charmingly eccentric, each contributing their unique skills to the mix.

This was an incredibly enjoyable read, which might sound odd given there's a murder involved, but the characters and their unique traits are simply irresistible.

If you are a fan of cozy mystery, you'll appreciate this fresh take on the genre. The plot is well-paced, filled with numerous twists and turns to keep you guessing. While the mystery is captivating, it's the character interactions and relationships that I truly enjoyed.

I received this book from the author as part of her ARC team. This review is my honest opinion.

I’m a huge movie fan, and once a month, my bestie and I have a blast watching vintage musical films together!

So, when Marcy told me about her new cozy mystery series featuring a group of mystery movie lovers who come together to crack a murder case, I was totally hooked! Murder Mystery Movie (Murder On Monday) is a delightful cozy mystery set in a charming beach town by Lake Michigan where movie mystery enthusiasts of varying ages meet together once a month at a vintage movie theater to watch old whodunits, chat about the plots, and try to guess “who dunnit!” But things take a surprising twist during their usual Monday meet-up when the ticket taker/popcorn maker is discovered dead behind the concession stand, mirroring the mystery movie theme of the month! Now, with a real-life mystery on their hands, the club dives in to figure out who is the culprit before the final curtain falls!

Since this is the first book in a series, it really lays the groundwork for future adventures and introduces us to a wonderfully quirky cast of characters. It kind of gave me vibes of the Golden Girls mixed with Hallmark mysteries, which is just delightful! The humor sprinkled throughout, along with some fantastic one-liners, made me chuckle. I love how the story features multiple points of view, bringing the characters together to solve the mystery. So much fun!

Murder Movie Club is the first book in the Monthly Murder Movie Club Mysteries. Taking place in my home state of Michigan, the setting is a movie club. Unique indeed. The cast of characters is varied, each brining their own thoughts and ideas to the table when a theater employee is found dead.

The only things that really annoyed me about Murder Movie Club are the members' actions and schemes after they found the body. If they watched as many murder mysteries as they indicate, they know there are certain rules and procedures to follow when you happen upon a body. Especially a body that has clearly been murdered. Even using just some plain ole common sense would have been spectacular to pull out when they find John.

I understand their "excitement" (which probably isn't the right word to use but I'm going with it) in taking some of their on-screen experience and applying it to a real live case, though. I worked on the case with them as they all did their part. I was invested in finding out what happened to John and why. There a revolving points-of-view so you'll need to pay attention to which character is being featured.

Murder Movie Club is a quick, fast-paced read, and wonderful start to a new series.

Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday is the start of a new series. It is about a disparate group of people (most senior citizens and one young single mother) who get together monthly to watch a mystery movie at the local movie theater, stopping it mid-way to solve the mystery. Then a mystery happens in real life. A young man working at the movie theater is murdered and they set out to solve the mystery.

I wanted to read this book because I love cozy mysteries. I also enjoy movies and thought the premise was fun.

This is a very unique mystery - the cast of characters is so quirky and they don't get along at all initially! They do learn to work together to solve the mystery though.

I enjoyed the movie theater and the setting (a small town in Michigan). It was fun starting a new series and getting to know all the characters through the first book.

The mystery was straightforward, with a short list of suspects. The book is short and the writing features some humor and lively dialogue, so this was a very quick read.

I recommend Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday for other fans of cozy mysteries, and especially for anyone who enjoys a quirky, small town story.

Thank you @marcy_blesy for the #gifted ebook and this is my honest review.

If you are looking for a quick and fun cozy mystery, I highly suggest Murder on a Monday. I had jury duty this week and I read this book in a couple hours. It is a fast paced murder mystery with quirky characters that become fast friends while solving movie murder mysteries. They meet on Monday evenings to watch a murder mystery. They stop the movie halfway through and get together and try to solve the murder. They then continue the movie to see who guessed correctly.

When meeting for their Monday night murder mystery, they find the concession attendant dead. They work together to find clues to solve the murder before the police. They also find the movie theater is in trouble. With the help of a feisty cat they work together to solve the murder and save the theatre. A long the way we get to know a little about each character. This is a fun start to a new series.

This first in a series is a very middle of the road cozy. A small group of characters are brought together by their involvement in the monthly meeting of the title’s Movie Club. They meet at the local theatre to watch a murder mystery. The film is stopped midway allowing the club to discuss theories and each make a prediction as to who the murderer is. The winning guess is awarded a plastic trophy to keep until the next month. Cute premise.

The very prolific author (a book a month?) writes an adequate mystery giving readers multiple suspects with varying degrees of potential motive. Most of the characters aren’t really given much background or depth. My guess is each book will give readers more detail about them because here we learned quite a bit about April.

Not excellent but far from bad. The mystery itself follows the typical cozy formula but the author gives the reader a group of characters that I’m looking forward to revisiting.

Fun new murder movie club cozy mystery series where the members try their hand at solving a real murder!

Murder Movie Club: Murder On a Monday is the debut novel in veteran author Marcy Blesy’s fun new cozy mystery series, the Monthly Murder Movie Club, featuring movie club members who try to solve a murder in real life. Fun, diverse characters, spirited dialogue, and an intriguing murder all combine for an entertaining story.

The characters are engaging and comprise quite a diverse group of individuals. The story unfolds from multiple perspectives and is really an ensemble effort to solve the case. While I had a favorite character, that changed as the story progressed, and each one got their turn to present their point of view. I enjoyed the participants bickering and their banter.

The victim is discovered early on, and a major piece of evidence goes missing soon after, so the story is off and running almost from the beginning. Plot twists kept things interesting and me guessing!

I recommend MURDER MOVIE CLUB: MURDER ON A MONDAY to cozy mystery fans.

I loved this start to a new cozy mystery series. Told in third person but covering five different main characters, the author did a good job weaving in the backgrounds of each of the characters and to why they need each other in a "found family" of sorts. The premise is really unique with a group of people meeting every month to pick apart a murder movie to guess the killer. Of course, one day of their meeting, they find an actual person dead in the theater (the ticket taker, popcorn guy), and they use their skills to solve the crime. It's funny and heartfelt with entertaining characters. Looking forward to book 2. Murder....best served with popcorn is the tagline. LOL

What an adventure with a crazy cast of characters.

A monthly murder movie club would be such a fun thing! This is a kooky group of (mostly) seniors getting together to solve movie murders. They stumble upon a body, and it presents an opportunity to solve a real murder. The fact that they just couldn’t resist trying to solve it was entertaining. Their immediate response was to look for clues. They all had their own jobs and came together to discuss. I loved it. It's the only cozy mystery I've ever read that truly required a lot of teamwork. Undoubtedly an adventure.

This was such a fun read. I love the idea for a murder movie club! The flow of the story is great. I like how we get to dig a little deeper into each club member. Most of the club members are seniors, except for new mom, April. April is my favorite character so far. She thinks she has the most to prove to the other club members. I feel she has the most to prove to herself and cannot wait to see where her journey ends up next. They do love to throw little jabs at each other which makes for some LOL moments. The members joke about each other but come together when it counts to solve the murder.

Nothing brings people together quite like murder. 📖 Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday brings together an eclectic group of murder loving movie goers who fancy themselves more clever than even the best on screen detectives!

I was skeptical at first that these characters would ever find a common ground, but much like #bookstagram they carved out a place of belonging and acceptance at the Northwoods Theater.

If you like unique settings, quirky characters, and a good mystery, then Murder Movie Club is a must read. It’s a solid start for the series, I look forward to seeing how the characters develop and figure out their relationships with each other.

This is a new cozy mystery series written by the author! I loved the characters and the plot, but found that the story itself was a bit too short for character development or time to find viable clues. The resolution came out of nowhere and I felt disappointed I couldn’t figure it out on my own. As of today, there are three books in the series out. All of them are available on Kindle Unlimited for those that subscribe. I am planning on reading more of the series to find out what the Murder Movie Club does next!

As a retired Michigan reader, I enjoyed the setting, as well as the premise of this unique series: Monthly Murder Movie Club. I was delighted in the diversity of the characters and how they approached solving Movie mysteries and now a real life mystery. As a retiree with a shortened attention span, the length of this story was spot on. Looking forward to reading more of the series. I loved this cozy mystery. As a Michigander having it based here makes it even more special.

There is quite the crew when it comes to the characters in the Murder Club. Each bringing something unique or rather quirky personalities to the group. It's hard not to love each of them. With their love of solving cases on film it's no surprise they have a talent for the real thing.
